This song makes my heart ache. Susannah loved all three brothers, but Tristan was her soulmate. The song is obviously about Susannah belonging to Tristan forever, but he was so wild (like the twilight and mist), he could never truly belong to anyone, not even Isabel Two who was taken from him. Ughh this whole story just oozes tragic lost love. It just kills me.
Personally I do not think Susannah loved Alfred. She probably loved him like a friend or companion but she was not in love him. She married him because Tristian left and in a letter told her to move on with her life. Plus I honestly do not think she was in love with Samuel either. She probably deeply liked him. He checked off the boxes for a good decent husband but they lacked the passion and attraction that she felt for Tristan. In fact she told Tristan that deep down inside herself she wished Samuel and Isabel Two were gone. She wanted him back right after Isabel Two died and was willing to leave Alfred. Tristan refused her because his heart belonged to Isabel Two. Sadly Susannah killed herself because she could not live without Tristan however she emotionally died a long time ago.
@@juneysummers5342 Very true! Sam and Alfred were loved in a different way (but most likely engaged/married out of tradition, obligation, and desperation based on the time period). Tristan was the source of Susannah’s true romantic love. I always found it interesting Susannah didn’t completely part from the Ludlows after Tristan left her. It was because Susannah stayed and married Alfred that she went on to suffer further. Maybe she wanted to hurt Tristan or remain close to him even if it meant marrying his brother. Ahh it’s just so tragic and I feel for each character so deeply. None of them deserved the heartbreak they endured.
@@AnzuMiruku Her parents were deceased, and she had no other family to return to and start over. They mentioned that very early in the movie, in the letter from Isabel one to the Colonel. She was also hoping beyond hope, that Tristan would come back home. She could have probably beared staying with Alfred had Tristan not returned finally. By then she was locked into a life which was convenient and comfortable but not her true love. The desperation on her face when they met at the fair with Isabel 2 and Samuel 2, was palpable. Alfred even saw it and knew he would never replace Tristan in her heart.
As evening fell, a maiden stood, at the edge of a wood, in her hands laid the reins, of a stallion, and near I've seen, a girl as fair, heard a gentle voice anywhere, whisper, alas, she belong, belong to another, another, forever, yes she belong to the twilight and mist.
This scene is embedded in my childhood. One of the first songs I learned to play on the piano. Didn’t understand the movie as a kid, but this scene was always so beautiful to me. 🥺

Colonel William Ludlow: Dear Isabel, How strange to have a cultivated woman in the house again. How intoxicating. Indeed to have all three of my sons under my roof again. Fills me with such a deep quiet satisfaction. I thank god.
Singing this while driving alone at night on a dark road, lights coming only from your car, with only woods at either side, would give you a different vibe.
When I was a young teen in high school, I used to play this VHS every single night. The music in this movie is so peaceful. I was a rebel that had a celeb crush on Aiden Quinn instead of Brad Pitt back then, lol. And goodness, Henry Thomas looks so young here! I'm glad Mike Flanagan recognizes his talent, b/c he's so good in Hill House, Bly Manor and Midnight Mass.

@ Juney Summers
Lol. No shit. Entire point of the movie. Glad you grasped it.
@@junghunt8645 Hey now, we’re just having a little fun discussing the movie, even if it’s obvious. No need for negative words towards anyone.

This song is hauntingly nostalgic of simpler times which never existed.
Oh I like that. Very good 😊
Oh it existed alright. Which is why you feel nostalgic listening to it. Your soul knows.
I just learned that the actor who played Samuel was also Elliott from E.T. (Henry Thomas). Weird that I never realized that before.
Oh my god. That’s where I knew his face from
Wow thanks😊
That's it!! I knew he looked familiar.

Ne'er had I seen
This movie still hurts to watch. But we all put ourselves through the pain.
20 years later and I'm still crying 🤫😮💨
A very emotional film. Loved this song
However much I see this movie, I still cry when I watch it.
I adore this movie, it's an emotional rollercoaster.
Henry Thomas, from sweet boy (ET) to hot DILF (Haunting of Hill House). He’s an amazing actor! So beautiful and under appreciated!
His performance is pretty awesome in this scene. His voice is so solemn and pleasant, yet there is a sense of frailty about it
But she belongs to another forever. Pretty much the story of each brother's relationship with her.

❤️
That’s wonderful !!!!! I remember it from my childhood, it led me on a life of composing music ❤❤❤❤
One of my favourite movies of all time!
Scene remembers me of Christmas trees, gifts and supper with family. Always.
RIP Samuel

They were graced with Susannah but they missed their Mom. So well acted in each of their eyes 🥰

Of a stallion.

Whispered, "Alas..."

Yes, she belonged to
the twilight and mist
And Tristan was the twilight and mist 😢
Fills me with a deep quite satisfaction that I thank God
Beautiful movie. Great acting. Beautiful movie!
Beautiful and hypnotic ❤

喜歡這一幕的歌聲和鋼琴。終於找到如此完美的剪輯。整部電影裡最平靜美好的一幕。
Adoro esta película y en especial esta escena donde los tres hermanos están tan unidos y felices. La foto preciosa 💖
One of fav song
I just caught myself whistling this and took me a good 10 minutes to figure out where it was from. Kept thinking Knox from DPS.

Aiden Quinn...why
I love this song 🔥
Love this song !!
Samuel comes back in the sequel.
I just discovered that's the kid from E.T. How did I not know that all these years?
❤❤❤❤ Samuel
Samuel qui sembrava un ragazzino, era proprio inadatto a Susanna che invece era una donna

Whispered Alas
