oprah_did_9/11 I read that too and I think that’s how he ended up playing bass. It was just Prairie, David Foster, Fee and Luke on that I believe because the other guys walked out, so the story goes.
Candyman is killer, glad to hear it mentioned. Love his version of The Bomber and used to play Party In Simon's Pants with a band, it was difficult but fun to pull off. Luke did so much like with Michael Jackson and The Tubes and Don Henley that is so memorable. During the 80's and 90's in Germany if you didn't cop Lukather to a T you didn't get studio work. No lie.
Speaking of melodic styles....David Gilmour was once asked about his melodic style.. he stated he couldn't play fast like the other guys, his hands just weren't cut out for it. So he decided he had to learn how to make his guitar sing.
Awesomeness! Excellent points at the end... "maturity".. Today everyone can blaze.. Why are you doing what you are is more important. Once again writing a good song is the whole point
The picture of his Valley Arts guitar caught my eye. Luke is a great guy. He had his VA guitars made at the same time VA was making my basses. Great luthiers at VA. I wish they were still around.
The First Slide up Lick, is in the cool part of the Rosanna solo, came from his Carlson influence maybe :) Luke is one of best in the World. Great Video as Always Dave. Love um all......
Hi David. When it comes to SL, I think he is the master… his tones, his melodic playing, and his musicality. I was 13-14yrs old when “hold the line” first hit the radio waves. I have simply admired his music ever since, but you are right - the late 80’s & early 90’s was when he was unbelievable. Toto played at the MontJazz Festival and they did Jimi’s Red House - OMG!! he is all over it, and his solo work “Never walk alone” (live). He admits that he’s NOT a shredder, as he prefers to be more melodic. Well he gets that right! I really admire the work he did with Larry Carlton - especially the Jeff Beck song “We ended as lovers” I could talk about SL all day, but thanks for teaching us some of his lic’s. Cheers, Ewan
For me Luke always was/ is a phenomenal guitarplayer and musician. But as you mentioned, there was something very special about his playing around the 1990s that really like catched my ear. Great lesson, great playing, good vibes. Thank you very much
Such a great lesson. It’s so interesting and amazing to see the evolution from reading your articles in Guitar Player to your RUclips channel. Your genuine love of great artistry and your presentation are both inspiring. Thank you!
Great video. I'm also a big Steve Lukather fan. Considering all the solos he's played (with Toto and on countless sessions), this live version of the Georgy Porgy solo from the 90s is one of my favourites. Its melodic as well as technically clever and in my view perfectly fits the song. For anyone who hasn't heard the full thing through, have a listen... its great.
Really wasn’t a Toto fan but always read every article with or about SL ... monster player ... the stories he tells now about the 80’s and 90’s are spot on ... great lesson !!!
Thank you so much for your videos ! These sharings means a lot for me ! Very big huge fan of Steve Lukather... melodic, musical, so talented... as you are too, really ! All the best for you !
Love Lukathers playing. I had a best of star licks type vid that had a snippet from different people. His lesson had something to do with picking, don’t recall the exact exercise, but I recall it was very helpful in my playing . That’s been 30 years, little foggy lol.
Masterful. The first lick is a showcase in taking a simple melodic concept, developing it to the point where the “1” is disguised. Great rhythm and timing. Another super enjoyable lesson👍🎸😀
Hey David I just wanted to let you know that as someone who has been playing the guitar for 3 months now, your 3 for alls have been such a joy to watch, because it seems everytime I watch you break down another guitar player there is always something I can take and implement into my own playing whether its Gallagher's Rakes, Iommi's Flutters or Lukather's unorthodox sliding 😊 cant thank you enough for those videos, lots of love from Germany ✌
Lovely, lovely video! Thanks for sharing it! I love to see that you've also incorporated Luke's powerful vibratto after all those years studying his playing!
Have you seen that live show in Japan in 1987 with Jeff Beck? Steve was bouncing all over the stage and lighting his guitar up like crazy. He fit the bill perfectly. Everyone was feeding off his energy for sure.
I loved this video/lesson 👍🏻! Great work and great playing as always. I’ve watched the Toto Live In Paris video a thousand times and I just love that era of Toto and Lukes playing. I hope you will do a part 2 of it.
I love Steve Lukather. His greatest solo for me personally is the outro of I'll Be Over You live in Paris 1990. I think you know what I mean. That outro is by far the most epic melodic solo for me. Bar none.
You mentioned Neal Schon, I would love to see you do a lesson from his solo album "Beyond the Thunder". Such a masterpiece imo. Keep up the great work David.
Well done! Excellent job! You really can see how much fun you have and how deep you are into Lukes style! Need to practise it soon! As for me Luke's best years in terms of invention are the 80ies and the 90ies! Besides Neal Schon, Tim Pierce and Lincoln Brewster are also some of that song supporting guitarist! Thanks for sharing! Cheers DimiZ
Dave, thanks for this! I experienced the same thing in school; most people lumped Toto in with pop music. It didn’t deter me. I’m a fan of tight, well written lyrics, great musicianship, and great vocals. I saw the on the Toto XIV tour. They were awesome!
Great stuff as always. I particularly like how at 4:39 you finish up that lick and then kind of look at the camera like "there's the sweetness". I can tell you really enjoy playing these tasty morsels. Thank you
Everything ur saying about Luke and Jeff is SPOT ON!! They are NEXT LEVEL!! Never understood why Luke doesn’t like his own Star Licks video. He always talks about how wet the sound was and he had just gotten his Bradshaw Rig. It was the RIGHT sound for the times and his playing is mind blowing....good stuff! Check out Baked Potato Super Live if you haven’t and prepare yourself....
I've always been a " Luke" fan! I had that Starlicks video too! Boy I played the A LOT!! Thanks again for another inspiring lesson David! I could see you really you like Steve a lot! I'm going to pick my way through this one! LOL
Great stuff Dave, you nailed the licks and vibe here. That Paris live 1990 Georgy Porgy is my favourite of Luke’s, transcribed it a while ago but could only get an approximation of the warp speed descending end run partly due to the amount of delay confusing my ears. I think that playing for 15 years with Jeff Porcaro-the best drummer of his generation-helped elevate his playing to the highest level.
Really glad you focused in on that Georgy Porgy solo. It's one of my favourites of Lukes playing, melodic and has a nice touch of flash and sophistication in there too They were actually touring the Greatest Hits album when they filmed this show. I've got an interview with Luke where he mentions what the dates were promoting
Great video. I dig Lukather. I always love the guitar work in Breakdown Dead Ahead, not realizing it was Steve playing it. I'm definitely drawn to his style.
Great lesson David. Luke has been my favorite for a long time. I love how he can make a relatively simple solo, like the one in "I'll be Over You", sound so powerful and full of emotion. Have you noticed that in recent years, he's started to incorporate a lot of Beck's style, into his own playing? Particularly his use of the bar.
I listened to the entire toto discography recently, and I my jaw was on the floor. The guy is a mind blowing player. Take all guitar players that I like, mash them into one, and you get Steve Lukather.
Have you ever delved into the playing of David Grissom? He is an amazing player. Has quite a resume. Very cool tasteful style and tone. I’m sure you know of him, but many guitarists haven’t , and when they do most are floored by his playing . Keep up the good work!✌️
Yeah Man, this is a mother excellent lesson! Of course, I love Luke... Oddly enough, I always was more focused more on his rhythm work then on his solos. The Solos are great, no doubt about it, but I felt it was the obvious thing to really like them. But when you listen c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y to the songs where Luke was involved for the whole guitar part, you very soon find out what a rhythm beast he definitely is. Well, some guys have all the luck... Anyways, great episode, David. Thanks! Best greetings from Germany. Michael
I have boxes of guitar magazines going back to the early 80s. Guitar Player, Guitar World and a couple of others. I should have every month going back to at least 82. And then lately I’ve been hitting the bookstores you can get them for $.25 a piece, when they are available. The last time I bought I spent about 12 bucks. Used bookstores usually have magazine racks.
You can do both Dave. Amazing technical virtuosity can contain musical ideas and memorable melodies ie Chopin Etudes. Compelling musicality and technique are not mutually exclusive. But they are a bit more challenging to achieve If you haven’t been to a conservatory. Great job !
Thanks a lot for this great lesson. I am with you on your opinion about music and melodie.... but i would love to be able to shred a little better/faster some times :)
Btw, how do u keep ur fender stay in tune while using the whammy bar.. Im impressed.. N I need tips for my fender guitars always out of tune while doing those whammy thing..
Great video as always Dave, but wish you could of done a longer one as Luke's playing style is vast... maybe you could do a part 2 follow up sometimes?
Question..... Have you broke the Metal hold down tabs on the back of That Album Frame , from changing it so many times? I have that album & IV Hanging in my Studio!
Great video/lesson:) Check out Les Dudek. Great guitarist. The first two albums are awesome (from 1976+1977). Very underrated. Also, Ian Bairnson - scottish guitarist. Played with Pilot and The Alan Parsons Project.
the solo on angel dont cry is my favorite.
Such an underrated album.
Lukather's work on The Tubes "Completion Backwards Principle" is amazing. The solo and fills on "Talk To Ya Later" are tasty.
Wow! I didn't know he played on that!
He played the bass on that track too which is really cool. I just learned that song for the band I play guitar in.
@@voronOsphere He wrote that song with them along with “She’s A Beauty”.
i read in his book the guys from the tubes werent too friendly to him
oprah_did_9/11 I read that too and I think that’s how he ended up playing bass. It was just Prairie, David Foster, Fee and Luke on that I believe because the other guys walked out, so the story goes.
Mann I'm loving these licks. This video of him playing Georgy Porgy inspired me so much growing up.
Candyman is killer, glad to hear it mentioned. Love his version of The Bomber and used to play Party In Simon's Pants with a band, it was difficult but fun to pull off. excellent. Thank you.
Dude!! I love that solo from Georgy Porgy in that live clip! Thank you!
Bravo, it's great to hear you say it's the song and not the tricks.
For me Luke always was/ is a phenomenal guitarplayer and musician. But as you mentioned, there was something very special about his playing around the 1990s that really like catched my ear. Great lesson, great playing, good vibes. Thank you very much

Dave your awesome man. Great perspective!!!
This is great! I learned them all! Thanks man. Late 80’s/early 90’s Lukather is my fav too!!
Really useful licks - great job on these
Love Lukathers playing. I had a best of star licks type vid that had a snippet from different people. His lesson had something to do with picking, don’t recall the exact exercise, but I recall it was very helpful in my playing . That’s been 30 years, little foggy lol.

Thanks for the great lesson. The color of your guitar is reminiscent of Steve's Vallery Arts guitar in the 80s/90s
Masterful. The first lick is a showcase in taking a simple melodic concept, developing it to the point where the “1” is disguised. Great rhythm and timing.
Another super enjoyable lesson👍🎸😀

Love the Catch Bending!
Wise Words in your summary! I totally agree.
So looking forward to this. Lukather really is the guy!!!
Great stuff Dave
This content is a gem!

Beautiful, also that Georgy Porgy live in Paris solo is probably the best solo ever played, but not so many people know this!
Great stuff man! I love that starlicks vid

Good job David! ✨👌

Really glad you focused in on that Georgy Porgy solo. It's one of my favourites of Lukes playing, melodic and has a nice touch of flash and sophistication in there too

You speak the truth I've been a big luke fan from the start.

Beginning of the 1st solo seems to be a 7 time signature.
The first two licks are from a live version of Georgy Porgy and are in 4/4.
Killer tone man!!
Awesome stuff! Luke rules! Love to see something on Rob Caggiano.
Most people don't realize what a monster guitar player Steve is! To put things into perspective Van Halen held him and very high regard!
I listened to the entire toto discography recently, and I my jaw was on the floor. The guy is a mind blowing player. Take all guitar players that I like, mash them into one, and you get Steve Lukather.
