    We bought an Archer and restored it to better than new condition! What’s your favourite part of the new and improved 97F?

      Happy to see the interior updated. You spend the most time inside but lots of people seem to have planes with funky interiors for some reason.

      @@andrewmgoss once you get used to it... well, you would rather fly than pay the interior shop 10K.

      I’m a piper arrow owner located in NC as well. Maybe we can go flying sometime. Thinking about starting a RUclips channel to share my experience with the plane as well which is a 1969 Piper arrow 200. It’s quite a different airplane now than it was 51 years ago.
      If you ever feel like grabbing a $100 burger let me know. Trying to meet other piper pilots in the area.
      Great content. I just found the channel.

      Seriously guys massive love for saving the Archer, the panel is incredible and the paint is beautiful. I cant help but think you should of got the Lo-Presti cowling, wingtips and gap seals too

      Probably the one I did with a G5. But it's nice to see someone else doing what I did.
      I kept the gns430 and rest of the regular center stack. The wiring in the panel was a huge pain.
      Autopilot was also a pain. Did you put in LEDs to replace the tip strobes?

    As far as the old panel. With a flight bag full Standard Approach/Departure Charts, IFR Charts, and VFR Sectionals, a preflight FAA Weather Briefing & subsequent filing of a flight plan, a thorough preflight inspection, running through the check lists and bringing the plane awake, the HSI gyros spinning up, ...soon the engine would be purring. Then, rotate and climbing to reach the bases and into IMC (THE SOUP) for the next three hours. Breaking out at 400ft, 200 yet to minimums, adjusting to visual flight can be a bit awkward after hours on Instruments. The panel you showed as "antique" certainly is, but when I started flying it was state of the art. I didn't have the luxury of an autopilot coupled approach etc. That was for new 737's and some of the filthy rich. Old men certainly do have their memories, and, for a moment, looking at that tired panel I thought of long flights comfortably guiding an aircraft through the "muck" as those "steam gauges" fed me every bit of information I needed to know what my plane was doing, where I was and where I was going.

    • @kimskislalom
      @kimskislalom 15 дней назад

      Yep, I am flying on all steam gauges, no GPS, No electric trim, no auto-pilot. But I do have VOR navigation. Auto-pilot would of been nice so that I could eat sloppy food while I am flying instead of a cold dry sandwich.

    I love it when younger pilots say to go across country you need GPS! What do you think we did back in the 70's and 80's? A paper chart some lines headings wind vectors and a magnetic compass works just fine, oh and a CRP1 might help with the MK1 Eyeball😁. That plane even had VOR's and they are easy enough to use. At 120Kn it is easy to keep in front of the plane! For the money you spent you could have bought another plane and leased it out on a flight school and started a business! But each to his own and if it makes you happy then crack on! Cheers from the UK.

    • @unlisted773
      @unlisted773 4 года назад +2

      Was kind of thinking the same thing. That $500 iPad and the VOR's go a long way in my book. Love the new gear, but couldn't bring myself to sink that kind of dough into something that I can technically do without.
      Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful bird and they did an amazing job! Kudos!

    • @kde9910

      I never really understood it either why most videos I see online about cross country flying as a student has to use iPads or GPS. I started flying last yeah (in the EU) and they plain I fly as a student (C152) doesn't even have glass cockpit hell it's not even IFR capable. VOR is integrated int the radio and it has a bad CDI but thats all. They taught us to use the map instead.

      And? If everyone thought your way there wouldn't be certified paint or avionics shops that can complete all the required paperwork for the aircraft logs. There would be no need to get an A&P to rebuild the engine and an IA to sign off on all the work and yellow tagged parts. We'd all just rebuild that thing in the garage ourselves and the next guy that buys the plane would roll the dice.
      Even the new interior foam and fabrics have to be approved flame retardant materials with paperwork to prove it. You going to source all that and sew your own seat covers? Didn't think so. That would take time $ And skill. Which is why some guys let the pros do it while they can work making $ doing what they're good at instead of trying to do it and maybe wasting their time and $ to learn

    Congratulations on a very nice, clean and fresh looking Piper 🙂 I did my PPL in a Warrior II and I prefer the looks of a low wing over the Cessna. I'll try to get a Piper for training on my X Plane 11.
    This project also shows that when the research is done right, owning an a used aircraft then overhauling it is the better option vs. buying a new one from the factory, as the total price paid for this beautiful Archer is less than one third of a newly built one from the factory.
    This kinda shows why the new GA market is not as strong as it was until the late 70's. Aside from the regulations changes, the used market is overflowing with airframes that can be overhauled at a significantly less cost.
