    Nice Work, Glad I saw your video before buying several HL-340 units. I would have serious problems using this Chinese USD to RS232 converter.

    Interesting, I've never given RS232 that much thought, its only ever been plug and play to me, thanks for the spec's and yeah, I guess you get what you pay for ! but at least it works and you had a quick chat with the Owon...cheers.

      Back in the days RS-232 was the prevalent interface for all kinds of peripherals (besides Centronics/parallel if you needed more bandwidth). And yes, it worked with the "It Who Must Not Be Named" power supply. But then, its RS-232 interface was (fortunately) also not fully standard compliant.

    I found a similar one like this in the workshop bin at work and "hacked" it to be a normal USB-UART interface to use with Arduino. Basically just removed the RS232 chip and linked the CP2103 pins to the DB9 pins.

      @robertssmorgasbord  2 года назад

      Similar, but obviously not identical 😉Mine didn't have a RS232 driver chip to begin with. The CH340 pins were already directly connected to the DB9 connector.

    I've had similar expertise with my USB to RS232 convertor. Connection with DEC VT510 Terminal was without problems, however some devices needed custom cable. RX TX nad GND pinout seem to be correct at least.

      @robertssmorgasbord  3 года назад

      It's not just the pinout (the HL-340's is according to standard), it's the voltage levels. Some industrial devices are using +/- 15V, which will fry the CH340 (and possibly the connected USB port of your computer).

    Any ideas on how to get hl 340 Chinese cable to work? How do you see if it actually works?
    I'm running win 7 and it always shows up in the device manager with a yellow!. I've tried all kinds of drivers, installs, but it will never associate the z tek with the pc properly.
    Any way to test it to see if it's a Chinese pos? Tnx

      Well, if you have the CH340 driver installed and and the device manager doesn't like it anyway ...
      You could try completely uninstalling all CH340 drivers you've tried so far and then install the right one again ( learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/how-to-install-ch340-drivers/all ). If it still doesn't work it's probably broken. Of course you can try to connect it to another computer. Maybe there's something wrong with your computers USB.

      @@kdr-ql7pz You're welcome! And I'm sorry that that Chinese cable of yours doesn't work. Unfortunately it's always a hit-and-miss with that really cheap Chinese stuff. Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you don't.

    I have touchscreen with db9 port, will this converter work? Also my os is windows 11

    • @robertssmorgasbord
      @robertssmorgasbord  2 года назад

      There are CH340 drivers available for Windows 11, so no problems there. I can't say anything about your touchscreen though. You'll have to tell me at least the manufacturer and type of the touchscreen.

      You're welcome! Did you mean "storage device"? Do you need an external/internal HDD or an external/internal SSD? I'm no expert in that matter, but personally I would go for Toshiba when it comes to HDDs.

      E.g. FTDI USB-COM232-PLUS1 ftdichip.com/products/usb-com232-plus1/

      @@robertssmorgasbord The following may be of interest to you (in a follow up video?). The cheapest solution I could find to communicate with my vintage serial handheld was to buy a USB-to-UART device that outputs 5 V over the Tx and Rx lines. It also has a 5 V DC out for you to feed into another device. It's a little red FT232RL board (you probably know the one).
      Then I convert the UART TTL 5 V Tx/Rx signals to RS232 and double the voltage to classic RS232 voltage levels with a MAX232 device. One connects the 5V DC output of the first device to it for that purpose. It's a little blue SP3232 board: you probably know the one I mean.
      We should not buy these crappy Chinese so-called "USB-to-RS232" devices. They don't work in 99% of the cases. Thanks again for your clarifying video!

      @@meneerjansen00 Thanks for the info! As it happens I just reviewed a little FT232RL board ruclips.net/video/27zx9MMKbAE/видео.html 🙂 But I plan to use it for a RS422 / NEMA0183 HS interface, not RS232. And yes, the MAX232 is a good solution. I think there are even reference circuits in the CH340 or FT323RL datasheets for it.
