OVER 3 HRS. OF LISTENING TO THIS FELLOW AND I HAVE ONLY HEARD JUST ONE SONG I DID NOT POST A THUMBSUP FOR BUT I STILL DID NOT POST A THUMBSDOWN EITHER. I GOT TO HEAR THAT SONG AGAIN AND AGAIN TO MAKE UP MY MIND DID I NOT LIKE IT OR DO I LIKE IT. THREE HOURS THIS FELLOW JUST KEEPS GOING ON AND ON WITH THESE SOUNDS EVERYONE IS JUST SO JAZZY. MAN WHERE HAVE I BEEN THROUGHOUT HIS MUSICAL CAREER?! TO ALL HIS FAMILY YOU HAVE A RELATIVE TO BE PROUD OF. I SURE AM PROUD OF HIM AND I PRAY GOD HAS HIM SINGING IN THE CHOIR IN HEAVEN AND HE IS THE MAIN SOLOISTS. THAT IS MY PRAYER
I love him. I can see where he influenced a lot of singers. He has a real raw, honest edge to his singing and he definitely takes a different spin on this torch song.
Thought I’d heard all the later recordings! The “Milestone” albums etc. This is a gem, from around that same time. Thank you for posting, so glad I found this today…. Jimmy forever!
I can't believe no one has commented on this song! This is GREAT! Thanks for posting it! He sang this at 2 presidential inaugurations. What a great voice!
Hey Hill, This is Jeanie, here's the 411 you asked for: Drums on this session were either Lewis Nash or Cook on different songs. Bass: George Mraz . Acoustic Guitar: Joe Beck Piano: Renee Rosnes Saxophone: Bob Kindred Trumpet: Lou Soloff Harmonica: Gregoire Maret Producer: Todd Barkan (Milestone Label) CD: "But Beautiful" ~ Day 3 of recording session - Aug. 18, 2001 - The Studio - Soho, N.Y. Visitors: David Ritz & Nancy Kelly * This track not on the CD!
Ignored?, ...once ago...though, not any more..more popular now than ever....It was just a matter of time..and you know about time ..don't you..? meaningless...Eternity, is another matter..It was good to have a friend in Jimmy....
I'm 62 years old and I just found and heard this song day by day the most best-written love ballad I've ever heard rest in peace I will always treasure this song day by day by Jimmy Scott
One of my all-time favorite songs day by day Mr. Jimmy Scott when I first heard the song I thought it was a woman surprised to see it was a man all I can say is awesome add to add this to my library of music
Saw Pink Martini recently, and they featured a guest soloist whose first name was Jimmie. I began to try to find his last name and in doing so, stumbled upon Jimmy Scott, who had performed with Pink Martini before his death in 2014. His vocal range and that of the singer we had seen - Jimmie Herrod - were quite similar and equally haunting. It was wonderful to discover a singer I had not known, and equally wonderful to know that Jimmie Herrod is a performer whose gift will keep him AND the late Jimmy Scott on the lips of music lovers for a long time.
Just one week ago, I discovered Little Jimmy Scott while watching the Denzel Washington movie, "Fences". His performance of "Day By Day" was part of the soundtrack. Only a couple of bars into the song I knew I had to watch the credits to find that song.
Sorry to be cold but maybe its because he's a castrato and he would be too easy to make fun of and people proably want something harder to make fun of and plus most people my age 20. As of august 24th 2012listen to shitty music so that's why their aren't ant comments onthis
Alex, there are comments on this by people who understand where he's coming from. Perhaps you could start a revolution and wake up people in your age group - tell them to get out of the music box! I started listening to Jazz when I was 18, but then I loved opera too when I was a mere child...so there you go.
Child, he is the "Grandfather of Soul Music". A NEA Jazz Master & Pioneer. A Legend who influenced more singers in the last 75 years than any other. Just ask any singer from the past 8 decades. Know your history before you speak what you not know about.
Alex Braun I hope you've grown up since this comment. Those were grossly insensitive, adolescent remarks. When I first heard him some years ago, I loved his voice, his phrasing, and his overall style, so I read up on him. That's how I found out about hos condition. You should've done the same, before showing your ignorance.
This is a LEGEND !!!!! THE GREAT JIMMY SCOTT!!!!!! A VOICE LIKE NO OTHER,A TRUE MASTER OF HIS ART!!!!!THANKS FOR THE POST!!!!!!!
Goosebumps...
RIP...Jimmy Scott......perhaps the "One of the" greatest, unjustly ignored American jazz singers of the 20th century.

Like you said, "He saved the best for last".
Miss you so, Vic.

indeed, Scott performed this at the inaugurations of Presidents Eisenhower (1953) and Clinton (1993) - that is with 40 years of distance! Amazing.
