TNT brings me back to a very important time in my life, in my twenties, trying to discover who I was and define who I am. It's a masterpiece.
Did you found who you are?
Currently in that phase
Oh. Shawn.
Time passes too fast, don’t you think?
This comment gives me hope it will end eventually. Unless you’re talking about your early 20s and had your sht together by 27. In which case, I’m still screwed 🤣
TNT is a flawless album. Watching this set was like hugging a dear old friend who you haven't seen in years.
Flawless. Huh.
It was like hugging a deer, old friend.
What an absolute gift. This album came into my life in '99 or so and fast became a part of who I am. It's an album I pull out once a year or so and listen to in its entirety. I introduced it to my wife a few years ago and the same thing happened to her. Last night, I was working on my computer upstairs and heard her listening to TNT. I immediately came down just to give her a big thumbs up, only to find that she was watching a live version of it on RUclips on our big flat screen TV. I'd never seen them live. I stopped what I was doing and sat on the couch and watched the whole show with her. So glad this exists. Going to share it with everyone I know who love good music.
Probably the most important album of my life. Every minute of it etched into my mind. This performance is a blessing.
I fell asleep to that album countless of times when I was a teen. It took me to truly magical places.
same.

lovingly... so much love for this album... and reminder.
@@wm2922 i just woke up to this today., mid set. Eased into the day in such an exciting way. Who are these guys,? Went back tp the beginning. 21st. anniversary
Tortoise is the soundtrack to the in-between of time. Their music doesnt look to celebrate moments. It becomes them then represents them. As you take part in real time.
So accurated
This is currently the best thing on yt.
True score brother!
and always will be...
Absolutely not.

TNT has remained my favorite go-to album for all occasions for 20 years now. All of these artists are insanely talented.
Nietzsche said: ''Man's maturity: to have regained the seriousness that he had as a child at play.''
I'd say these men are mature, and it's wonderful.
Beautifully put my man!
i dont get it , i might be stupid
Wonderful and very appropriate comment. Thanks

I was able to see Tortoise perform (essentially) the entirety of "Millions Now Living Will Never Die" (my favorite album of theirs) about a decade or so ago, and now I have this fantastic performance of my second favorite of their albums to enjoy. Sometimes life doesn't suck too bad.
metoo
Never got the love of Millions. …. 25 years listening to the I thought it was this record that beat their Debut. .. I even prefer standards over Millions. … just never got the hype for millions tbf 😂 means nothing I suppose but TNT top 25 records alright.
I just played for the opening act for this guys downhere in Santiago, Chile. A dream come true. What a nice guys were all of them and what an incredible show the gave to us chileans.
Brilliant combination of Brian Eno, Steve Reich, Pet Sounds backing tracks, 60s movie soundtracks, and ECM jazz. And it sounds amazing live.
Some definite Slint and Talk Talk influence too.
@@sethmoore8484 Considering David Pajo originally played on this and Millions Now Living Will Never Die, the Slint influence makes a lot of sense tbh

And Augustus Pablo!!
Every moment of TNT is a memory. Thank you Thrill Jockey. Such a good way to make life go by...
If making life go by is it for you... you can have all the Tortoise you need. Please.
This album and performance has a special meaning in my life. I was studying in Ann Arbor at UM in 1998 and immediately loved this album when it was released. Many years down the road, I was in Lake Orta, Italy in 2012 celebrating the defense of my PhD and my peers had a long conversation about the unspoken language of live musical collaboration that represents itself in TNT . This album and performance is epic. It Sums up a very specific moment of creative collaboration that is beautiful and rare. What a gem.
Totally agree
That is funny. Music for Ph.Ds. Forest/trees. Try Mingus. Though, maybe too dense. You don't wanna pull a synapse. You must be a runner?
TNT was a great album that doesn't need to be performed live. To be appreciated.
Inspired Sam to start Ghostly at U of M and sign Midwest Product
Love this band so much! Sad and happy that they aren't enormously popular. They deserve so much more appreciation here in the states, which allows me to see the best kept secret in Chicago far more often than most.
One of the greatest records ever recorded.
I got the chance to meet them in Mexico City, and Jeff Parker is by far one of the most humble and down to earth musicians that i've ever met.
Which makes him, what? A gifted artist? A musician? A genius? Or just a humble guy. Like my grocery clerk. My mechanic. Insurance broker. Please, continue...
Dónde los conociste?????
@@dicksnyder6753Are you okay?
I hope the afterlife is just hearing this album for the rest of eternity
Seriously.
That would be sweet
That wouldn't be enough. There are other albums too.
Two drum kits, front and center, facing each other: easily the most iconic stage setup in indie music, if not music at large
Stunning! This album will never get old. So good we are able to listen this live with such a quality audio and also with all the arrangements. Thanks guys!
I love that dude's guitar tone. Forgive me for not knowing his name.
To me, their greatest album is TNT! All of the others are great too.
Stop the Philosophical Zombies Jeff Parker
a masterpiece
It's amazing...
One of the best album intros ever. Those horns. Incredible.
Yeah such a great part! John also played on the Gastr Del Sol record camofleur, well he helped record it too. That horn part kind of melds into that record too, just thought i'd mention it since you focused on it. Two of my favorite records from the 1990s.
This is the album I was introduced to, my absolute favorite. A nice gentleman who worked at the old Atomic Records in Milwaukee introduced this band and many others to me in my early twenties. Have not stopped listening to them going well into my late 30’s.
Hey do me a favor people, keep liking this so it brings me back to this amazing video.
Well into my 40’s, 50’s, 60’s.... Cheers.

Thanks. I'm a newbie
But a happy one!
21 years?! I saw them tour for this record. I am O. L. D.
I live blocks away from the Art Institute so I was crushed when I found out this show had sold out (they always sell out!). Thank you Pitchfork for posting this, you made my day!
Just on my first listen of this up to 'I Set My Face To The Hillside'. As much as I love TNT, Swung From The Gutters, In Sarah, etc. etc., this performance of 'I Set My Face To The Hillside' from the opening notes had me feeling a rush of warmth and tears damn near coming from my eyes. From the opening sampling of the sounds of the children, Jeff Parker's fantastic opening guitar notes, John Herndon shaker playing, McComb's perfect bass line, and WHAM THE FUCKING VIOLIN. Usually I prefer when an artist is performing an album in full to pretty much play it straight as it was, but all of the flourishes so far of violin, horn, and trombone parts have breathed even more beautiful life into this timeless album. I can tell this is going to live long on my playlist.
I love how many people in these comments share my sentiments on this album defining a time and place in their life. The summer after this lp was released was truly the best I've ever had. TNT was a big part of it.
my favorite of them, definitely. "I set my face to the hillside" alone makes the entire album worth it
It is the musicalization of melancholy, I also love it.
@@alexismoma Millions now living will never die's "along the banks of the rivers" is up there too, ain't it?
Love seeing the two drummers face each other and play simultaneously
Yo la tango
Midwest Masterpiece.
I was so lucky to have been at this show as it was amazing. And I was floored to see this video come out a month later. Filming and audio are top-notch. The audio quality and mix are fantastic. Great job, Pitchfork! I hope they somehow find a way to tour again. This was the 2nd to last time they performed (last concert was in Japan). It was also a treat to see them with some additional musicians. They all did a fantastic job, especially James, who played so many key parts. I've seen them live 7 times (first time in 2006) and the only other show that was on this level was the ESS Gala at Constellation the year in 2017. That too was a "sit down, shut up, and listen" type of affair. All the other shows were at smaller, noisy, rowdier clubs. This was special. And I'm pleased it was captured on film.
I was there as well. What a treat to be seated and immersed in this.
I just saw them on this recent tour in philly for the 1st time and wasn't prepared for how tight and talented they would be live.. I was hoping for some tnt tracks, and they didn't disappoint!
They really sound like they've put some extra TLC into these live renditions, especially in the songs they normally play. And I FINALLY get to hear Everglade live!
3 drummers. 2 bassists. 2 guitarists. Everyone but Doug filling in on xylophones and/or keyboards at some point. How do they decide who's doing what for any given song? Their versatility is mind-boggling...
No. It's a bunch of mediocre musicians being mediocre on a bunch of instruments. But, you're impressed. That's comforting. For you.

Amazing how well these guys still groove way ahead of their time
So good! Great band, great performance, great sound, great video. Thanks for posting!
Thank you for this.
thanks for upload this masterpiece.
Stumbling upon this was a great surprise.
Truly Special places to go when you digest the entire TNT album. Previous commentators mention "master piece", "like an old friend" and "an absolute gift". All true. Such beautiful music with nuances that lock in and equally wonderful to revisit the tracks. For some reason TNT continues remind me and bring me back to a journey on a huge river.
Amazing! One of my all-time favorite albums. Thank you!
Superb, just superb.
I’ve always loved instrumental music. This video has confirmed that fact. Thank you for sharing!
Love Tortoise. This is Life. Still doing their magic and loving every minute of it. Pitchfork, thanks for making this possible. Thank you
I love this band so much!
A stunning display of ensemble playing.
20 years later, still love this album, more than ever
I can't wait to see these guys again once this pandemic is over. Thank you Tortoise!...and pitchfork
Too Beautiful! both the album and the performance
happy 21st birthday, i raise a glass to this timeless piece of art
Beautiful performance.
This is an incredible performance. I have loved this band for so long I can't even remember.
Thanks for the upload! One of my favourite albums of all time! So great to hear it performed live!
Whoever made the recording and put it out here - I throw rose petals under your feet every day wherever you go!
SO GOOD. Performance and production. A classic album forever!
Mesmerising performance. So many memories. Perfect sound.
Jeff Parker's face so relaxed in this one, amazing
His new album is insanely good.
He's relieving himself. I figure.
Excellent performance!! Amazing sound and video! Thank you very much for this great concert Pichtfork
This is so damn good. I love Tortoise. Great quality Pitchfork team!
THANK YOU for performing, recording, and putting this up on youtube
What a great show. A wonderful reminder that Life is for the leaping.
Been seeing/hearing/watching/loving tortoise for it seems an eternity. Tyvm for the upload.
What a fantastic performance! Shed a tear to Hillside. I must be going soft in my old age. Can't believe it's 21 years. Still in top10 fav albums ever.
One of the greatest albums of all time! Amazing performance! Love and thank you!
I’ve only just discovered Tortoise and this album. Absolutely adore it.
I discovered this album about 15 years ago and I was blown away.
I also have to say thanks to these guys for all their hard work. It was during the release of Millions that I had reached a depth of despair about music in general and was nearly entirely done with it, sold nearly all my gear but a $50 guitar and a small amp, and that record brought me back to it. Got into sampling, rebuilt my arsenal and kept going, so thanks a Million! Also seeing them live during this tour was like Christmas day to me as a younger kid!
I've had the privilege of seeing this band three times in my lifetime, and I leave in awe each and every time.
I envy you
They are a fantastic live band.
Oh HELL YES! This froze me in my tracks and I'm stuck here until the end. Artistic and masterful. Brings back good memories. Thanks Pitchfork!
Yes my most listened too album in 50 years. Very thankful!
Appreciate a creation of this album and a beautiful execution.
Saw these guys live, over 20 years ago now. One of the best gigs of my life.
Just stunning.
Love this album to death. The textures, beats, and grooves are captivating throughout.
I'm completely blown away by this
Absolutely pure masterpiece. So evocative and thought provoking..Killer..
I love this guys!!! so nice so light so jammie...marvelous!!!
Damn, I did not know they were doing this. Great to see so many fans here (and there) for this esoteric masterpiece.
First time ever hearing this band and wow! I am going to listen to this again for sure. Super amazing musicians and arrangement! This has brought joy to my life! Thank you!
Time has been VERY kind to this record... and this presentation of it is just gorgeous...
This is pure gold.
this opus has changed my life !!! thanks for eternity.
Amazing performance. Truly a masterpiece. This brings me back. This album never gets old. One of my top ever.
YESSSS
This is so good. A fresh take on a classic. Nicely done.
I've been lucky enough to catch these guys twice in the UK. First time was when 'millions ' was released and I was completely blown away.
This performance too is musical magic ...just beauful sound ! What an album
Thankyou Pitchfork for this 👍
This fills up my ears with sound and my soul with something indescribable
I can't believe it's been 21 years. Haven't been gone all that long (3 years), but makes me nostalgic and miss home. Last time I got to see them at the Art Institute was in 2002 for the Version Festival. Wish I could've been there for this one. What a gift.
Pure magic! ✨✨✨✨
My first year in Fine Arts at Oporto was spent listening to this album, when it came out. Thank you guys!
TNT is one of my top ten favorite albums of all time. At 52 years old - this has held true for two decades plus. Amazing performance of this album. So good.
Can I like this 4,000 times? :) It's so amazing to hear this after all these years.
Iconic.
Merci (to Share this Perfect concert)
I put this music on for studying but can't take my eyes away from it now. I've know Tortoise for a while, know TNT by heart, but stil I'm surprised?
Me too - trying to finish an essay on Moral Psychology but I keep getting pulled back in to Tortoise land!
I probably haven't heard this for ~20 years, but somehow Ten-Day Interval popped into my mind this afternoon, and I was really happy to have been able to find this performance. Amazing to see the collaboration.
This is a perfect album for winter.
Also for spring ;)
this is incredible
Just realized that I've pretty much been enthralled with this album for 10 years now. I first really got into TNT from a video/mini-documentary which came out in 2009 called "Jerry's Map" that used a few of the songs as the soundtrack. It's kind of been my go-to study/work soundtrack since then. Just timeless music for me! The rhythms and instrumentation/melodies just hit that sweet spot between "groove" and "chill" that just does it for me you know? I could listen to this album forever. So good!
21 years. How is that possible. I burned a hole through this CD back when it was released. Loved it then, love it now. How cool to see it performed live all the way through.
