Here are a few of my favorites off the top of my head:
    non-western:
Munojot Yoʻlchiyev and Shavkat Mirzaev Ensemble - Uzbekistan: A Haunting Voice
Truly unearthly singing - nothing resembling anything from the west. I love this.
Oumou Sangaré - Ko Sira. Easily the best album from the Diva of Mali.
    jazz
Milestones - Miles Davis sextet - Hard Bop just constrained enough under Miles Davis’ direction to be both exciting and accessible. Any fan of Prog Rock will love this masterful playing.
    Country
Vince Gill and Paul Franklin - Bakersfield. A tribute by two country masters of a forgotten genre of American music. I am not ashamed to say I bought this at The Cracker Barrell..!!
    Ambient:
Enya - Watermark - probably more for sentimental reasons, but god help me I love this.
    Electronic:
Yello - Stella. Oh Yeah popped up in ‘80s movies and commercials, but the whole album is wildly inventive, seductive and cinematic.
I don’t know what you call this:
Robert Fripp - The Gates of Paradise. Fripp’s audio explorations of Heaven and Hell is the best and most ‘composed’ of Fripp’s 90’s soundscape albums.

    2. Jon Hassell - The Surgeon Of The Nightsky Restores Dead Things By The Power Of Sound

    5. David Van Tieghem - These Things Happen

    John Coltrane - Sun Ship
Charles Mingus - Town Hall Concert (1964)
Ornette Coleman - The Shape of Jazz To Come
Thelonious Monk - Thelonious Monk And John Coltrane
Art Tatum - Solo Masterpieces (7-disc box set...or any of the separate volumes, it really doesn't matter)
    Non-jazz-related Honorable Mention:
Peter Gabriel - Passion: Soundtrack to the Last Temptation of Christ

    1. Dead Can Dance "Within the Realm of a Dying Sun", 2. Project Pitchfork "Entities", 3. Niyaz "Niyaz", 4. In the Nursery "Duality", 5. "Conan the Barbarian Soundtrack" by Basil Poledoris. Now, some of these could be considered rock if we really extend the notion far enough (Dead Can Dance and Project Pitchfork), but I think there would not be many people to defend that position, since guitars are not very present in these particular albums, the first one being a gothic neo-classic folk type of very dark music, the second german electro-dark from the 90's at it's best.

I don't know if this is my very top five. But they're the five that came to my mind first.
    1. Mary Chapin Carpenter- State of the Heart
    2. Madonna- Like a Prayer
    3. Miles Davis- A Tribute to Jack Johnson
    4. Bram Stoker's Dracula- Original Soundtrack
    5. Janet Jackson- Janet
I was hesitant to include Madonna and Janet because, to me, that sort of pop and R&B is still a form of rock. Hell, Mary Chapin Carpenter can rock sometimes too.

@@thecontrarians2438 It certainly is! "Angel Dust" was ahead of its time and one of so many fantastic songs. I am more partial to his more jazzier albums with Brian Jackson from the mid-70's but his whole catalog is worth investigating and he was so thoughtful and intelligent. A forefather in the rap genre even though his body of work was so much more than that. Cheers!

    Some of my favorites:
Johnny Cash - At Folsom Prison (Possibly the greatest country album. It's an essential album no matter what genre)
Bob Marley & the Wailers - Legend: The Best Of (If you're new to Marley or Reggae, start here. All killer, no filler)
Miles Davis - A Kind of Blue (Almost picked "Tribute to Jack Johnson" but "A Kind of Blue" is just the perfect entry point for Miles)
Prince and the Revolution - Purple Rain (This album has elements of rock, but it also has pop, R&B, funk, and electronic elements)
Lords of Acid - Lust (kinky electronic dance music that's perfect for a party, rave, or dungeon)
John Williams - any of his Star Wars scores, even the crappy Disney sequel trilogy has great music
Michael Jackson - Thriller (my brother had this on vinyl when we were kids. I listened to it more than he did.)
Outkast - Stankonia (Dre and Big Boi at the peak of their powers)

Now that I've watched the video I have to say that the choices were very interesting. I love the variation. My own choices were mostly from the early 1980s when I was a kid. I was pleasantly surprised to see another Jean-Michel Jarre mention there by bicyclelegs. I've really enjoyed the "bicyclelegs Discovers Rush" videos that he's made. Take care and enjoy your weekend.

I haven't even watched the video yet but I accepted the challenge. I try to be quick, which is very rare to me. These are not in any particular order:
    Jean-Michel Jarre - Oxygène (1976) or Équinoxe (1978) - It's impossible to choose...
Duran Duran - Rio (1982) - You could almost call them a rock band. It seems to me that Europeans and people from the USA see the band differently.
ABC - The Lexicon of Love (1982)
    Alphaville - Forever Young (1984)
Depeche Mode - Some Great Reward (1984)
There are many others I could've mentioned but these were the ones off the top of my head. Maybe I've listened to these albums the most. I still have to mention at least the first three Kate Bush albums. Well, some of her songs might still be in the category of rock, art rock, progressive rock etc.
Anyway, these were just some quick choices by a Finnish musician who has mostly been into progressive rock, hard rock and metal. Take care and I hope you're having a great day.
