Life Without You" was a song Stevie wrote after the untimely death of his great friend and mentor Charley Wirz. the song shows his love for Charley and how much he truly missed him. The White Stratocaster Vaughan played that was fitted with Danelectro Lipstick Tube Pickups was made by Wirz with the help of Stevie's Guitar Tech Rene Martinez.Wirz built it in late 1983, and placed a neck plate on it engraved "To Stevie Ray Vaughan, more in '84". He lost a tooth, you can see him looking down and around for it. I lost a tooth sorry. In this video he switched guitar. SRV ended with the white guitar he named Charley in honor of the maker of the guitar 🎸

I was going to say something similar, but you put it greatly. You mention Dan Electro pickups, and it reminded me of Dan Electros Guitar Bar in the Heights in Houston. My brother would play there on "open night" and you never knew who would be there also. All I'm gonna say it could be local stars to internationally known people jumping on stage. Great times.

You've just given one of the best descriptions of the magic that happens between Stevie Ray and his guitar that I've ever heard. Totally agree.

Did you notice he ripped out one of his teeth when he was playing with his teeth? He looked at his guitar tech and mouthed "Lost my tooth. It's gone!", laughed, and said, "Thak you, Charlie!"

    Stevie Ray Vaughan-Life Without You
    『Soul To Soul』1985/9 S R V forever I Can't Imagine Life Without You
"I hope we’ve all learned something lately about a few things. There’s no longer time for any of us to do things like that have happened to a few friends of ours of other countries, down south, anywhere in the world where people push people down instead of picking them up. We’re all here to help each other, love each other and be brothers and sisters. We’ve got one chance in this life to get out of here, whether we have to do it over and over or not, and that is to learn to love everybody else and treat them just like ourselves or forget it. Let’s all try to learn a few things and pick each other up when we’re down and not ever push nobody because we’re up. You with me? Alright. “
    Stevie Ray Vaughan

Love that version of Life Without You. Stevie's rap toward the end of the song was always great. This performance, which happened pre-rehab, was on more general themes of love and lifting each other up. After rehab, he added the cautionary tale of his addiction and the importance of staying away from booze and drugs -- "it'll eat you from the inside out" -- which essentially describes what the chemical addictions did to him. And yes, you're spot on in paying massive tribute to Double Trouble. Keeping up with Stevie was one thing, but the bigger thing was playing to lay down the right sound bed to let Stevie's gift shine. I heard someone once describe Chris, Tommy, and Reese as Stevie's wings on which he could take off and FLY. I think that's accurate.

I saw an interview with his brother Jimmie years ago, while Stevie was still alive. The interviewer asked him if it was true that Stevie never played a song the same way twice. Jimmie said, “Hell, he never plays it the same way once!” You can see Jimmie in the “Great Balls Of Fire!” movie from the late ‘80s. He’s the guitar player in Jerry Lee Lewis’ band. I saw him play at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas where his band The Fabulous Thunderbirds and ZZ TOP were opening for The Rolling Stones in 1981, before I’d ever heard of Stevie. You should check out the album they made together (as The Vaughan Brothers), ‘Family Style’. It was recorded just before Stevie died, and no one ever looks at it or maybe even knows about it. There’s some great stuff there.

You're exactly right drummer Chris Layton joined the band at that time called The Triple Threat Reuve on September 10, 1978, basses Tommy Shannon who was in a band called Krackerjack with Stevie Ray in Stevie Ray's teens joined Double Trouble on June 23, 1981 and Reese Wynans joined Double Trouble on September 30, 1985. Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble were performing with Jeff Beck, the day before Jeff Beck asked Stevie Ray if they were going to practice and Stevie Ray said what for? Jeff Beck asked Stevie Ray for a play list and Stevie Ray said I don't use a play list, I play from the heart so I don't know what, when or how I'm going to perform a song until I get on stage. That just goes to show you how amazing Double Trouble was, they had know idea what they were going to do until Stevie Ray started and always kept up with him and never missed a beat.

Rarely does anyone notice that seamless guitar swap at the beginning so he can play on the guitar for whom this song is a tribute, Charlie Wirz, who built that beautiful white guitar called Charlie. What a tragic loss so young. RIP💔SRV🎸
