My father (rest his soul) brought me a kit set model of this aircraft when I was a child. It was my first model aircraft and we spent hours putting it together and painting it. I thought it was the most stupid looking aircraft I’d ever seen when I was young, but it’s means so much to me now. Anyway, I’m now a captain for Air
New Zealand, a flight instructor, an aerobatic pilot, and a seaplane pilot.
Today would have been my father’s 66th birthday, so thank you jingles for featuring this aircraft today, and thank you Dad for being being my dad and my inspiration. May you Rest In Peace.

      Thanks for sharing that.
I built the plastic kit as a child myself and dearly loved it.
The F100 was my favorite jet of that era but, the F8 a close second.
My Dad passed in 2010 and worked on AD's in the US Navy.
I was rebellious and went Army, ending up crewing CH47's.
I do miss our conversations but can still think back on the good ones we had.
      I hope you can too.

They fixed that with IXWA strike. Now if you get a critical hit on an aircraft you will be credited with an assist or a kill if the player leaves the match no matter how long ago you shot them or what the critical hit was. And the warthunder control surfaces have various levels of damage that inhibit maneuverability. So you can get a damaged enemy tail without having completely destroyed the tail or the tail controll.

And in regards to the shenyang that hi-fived the gophers, I knew he was there and made sure to keep my eye on him the best I could. Which ultimately led to me sticking to the trees so as to bait the F-5 into a high speed dive that he wouldn’t be able to pull out of.

My old high school physics teacher flew the Crusader in Vietnam in a Wild Weasel role.
I swear the man came out the womb with a cigarette and aviator glasses riding a jet engine.
We would get him off on tangents regularly but I discovered even mentioning the Crusader would ensure an entire class period was filled with tales of glory, valor, and playing chicken with telephone poles.
We visited an air museum (class related) where there happened to be a Crusader on full display and he proceed with the most in depth walkaround presentation of the aircraft that I might have been brainwashed into loving it almost as much as he did.

Loved the old Crusader. My dad worked on the F8E while attached to his squadron... VF-194. One of the reasons the F8 didn't get more kills with guns is because its guns were very prone to jamming during high g-loads. Can't kill anything when you're guns are jammed. But, yes the pilots loved the F8. it was a dream to fly but a beast to land. "When you're out of F8s, you're out of fighters."

Hi Jingles I was in VF-111 F-8 squadron between 1965-67. On my first Vietnam cruise as a plane captain my aircraft was partially disabled by a SAM over the North and lost hydraulic power. The backup system was an air generator which folded out of the fuselage to pump air into the hydraulic lines. This could only provide enough pressure to deploy the landing gear, tail hook & move flight controls very stiffly. It did not provide enough pressure to engage the wing cylinder to raise it into landing position. The pilot had to land the F8 at what they said was 210 knots which he did but barely. The nose gear was only one foot from going over the end of the angle deck. Catching the last cable didn't help the matters either. Yes, the pilots loved the Crusader.

If you're interested in some additional USAF aviation history, I strongly recommend "Boyd : The Fighter Pilot Who Changed the Art of War

Back in the early 80's, I worked for Hughes Missile Systems Group, the USSR was still very much alive, and F anything was important to me. This book shows the beginning of the F15 and F16 a/c development and the mindsets that went into them. Very eye opening....

Jingles, old bean, when you're talking pre-1962 Navy aircraft, you gotta include the suffix. There's both an F4F (Wildcat) and an F4U (Corsair). F6U Pirate, F7U Cutlass, and F8U Crusader. The Crusader was renumbered in 1962/63 with the USAF numbering system we all know now.

Cool stuff! I didn't know Vought made a jet (or rather three) but it's a pretty cool one. The one thing I did know them for never shows up in these kind of games; the Vought XF5U, also known as the flying flapjack. It was a plane built for WWII, but wasn't finished in time. It used a combination of a very oval shaped wing and a pair of huge propellers to reduce lift induced drag by brakeing up the wingtip vortexes. It apparently performed at least decently, especially for use with carriers. I just want to see it make it into a game like War Thunder.

Fun Fact: The F-8 Crusader was the first main aircraft used by Shin Kazama, a Japanese mercenary fighter ace in the manga/anime series "Area 88." Area 88 is one of the three first manga that was translated into English to be published in North America. It is about a story of a mercenary fighter pilot, Shin Kazama, who is fighting for the Kingdom of Asran, a fictional country located within the Middle East, in which is in a middle of a war. Shin also uses a F-5 Freedom Fighter/Tiger II and then a F-20A Tigershark later on throughout the series. His aircraft has a distinctive blue and white color scheme and a unique emblem on the tail, a head of a unicorn with flaming hair. The setting takes place around the late 1970s to the mid 1980s. There has been an OVA, an arcade and counsel game, and a 12-episode anime adaption of Area 88. It is very interesting since I believe it is one of the first manga that contains military jet aircraft. It is also one of my favorite anime/manga series. You should check out this series if you hadn't.

One of my favorite aviation memoirs, Commander John Moore's _The Wrong Stuff: Flying on the Edge of Disaster,_ includes a lengthy section on the flight testing of the F7U Gutless, of which Moore was hapless enough to be assigned the carrier trials. That went about as well as you would expect.
During Moore's career, he found himself entangled in pretty much every stupid thing the Navy tried to do with jet aircraft. F7U carrier quals? Check. Testing out the insane semi-automated nuclear bombing run setup on the A3J Vigilante? Check (and it nearly planted him in downtown Columbus, Ohio). Flex-Deck (a truly ridiculous idea that involved making aircraft carrier flight decks bouncy and soft so the jets wouldn't need to have landing gear)? Once again, check. If it was incredibly dumb and the Navy was doing it with jets in the late '50s and early '60s, John Moore was involved.

12:00 Two characters in the Area 88 anime do that quite happily against the Fangs of the Desert defence. It takes less than a second to fold the wings.

The main problem with Vought’s early jets, and indeed many of the other early Naval jets, were the absolute dogshit Westinghouse jet engines that powered them. It was once remarked that a Westinghouse jet engine puts out about as much heat as the same company’s toasters.
Also, the F8U’s wing in-game DOES lift up if you deploy landing flaps.

lol was looking up the f-8 and found this gem on the XF8U-3 Crusader III's page.. the crusader III was passed over in favor of the f-4 phantom-
"NASA pilots flying at NAS Patuxent River routinely intercepted and defeated U.S. Navy Phantom IIs in mock dogfights, until complaints from the Navy put an end to the harassment."

  • @splabooshkey3343

I'm pretty sure the special wing is modelled in WT, it just works when you put out landing flaps essentially. Today's pilot had run out of fuel and didn't put flaps out to extend his flight time, hence also landing not quite on the airfield

  • @liquidleopard4495

I've always thought this was a pretty airplane. I read that, ironically, the Crusader had a tendency for the guns to jam if you were pulling any G when you fired. That was one reason it actually got a lot more kills with missiles than guns.

I confused the F-8 with the A-7 a bunch when I was younger. The A-7 was basically a smaller, slower, but carrying more bombs version of the F-8, but young me just thought they rounded the nose and called it a day.

Fun fact: The F-8 actually had a new prototype version competing for the interceptor role with the F-4 called the F8U-3, which would have been armed with Sparrows and sidewinders, with plans to add guns later. The Phantom won out though, so the Crusader 3 was relegated to working for NASA.

The first serially produced and used jet in US Air Force was, I believe, P-80 Shooting Star. It was used in Korean War and at the start it was pretty good. However, it was while fighting piston engine attack aircrafts such as Il-2. Even Mustangs did fine at first, of course... However, when MiG-15 entered the Korean War, it was game over for P-80. The MiG simply slaughtered them! The situation was changed only after a rushed introduction of F-86 Sabre that could parry the MiGs.
