  • This video clip is narrated by Jeff Cool from Rescue 3 of the FDNY. It's a small segment taken from the IAFF Fire Ground Survival Program. The video recaps the events that took place at a tenement fire on January 23, 2005 in the Bronx, New York - Which killed Lt. John G. Bellew and Lt. Curtis Meyran and caused severe and critical injuries to Lt. Joseph DiBernardo, FF Jeffery Cool, FF Eugene Stolowski and FF Brendan Cawley.
    Firefighter Survival is comprised of many elements including having the ability to rapidly and safely exit from an upper floor when conventional exits are blocked or non existent. Carrying a Personal Escape System and knowing how to rapidly deploy it in the worst of all conditions can not only save your own life, but also a fellow Firefighter or a Civilian.
    Train, Stay Prepared, Be Aggressive, Make the Save - SURVIVE!

      A true badass MAN!! It is easy to talk the talk but when it comes time to walk the walk, that is when the true colors are shown. What a noble action that deserves the highest of respect.

    I lost it when he said he would give anything to go out on a rig one more time... That look in his eyes and his voice. True Fireman right there. RIP to the ones lost and god bless the families and survivors!!

    God bless, and protect every man, or woman who proudly calls themself a firefighter. Now that I am too old, and physically unable to ever Climb on a Rig again. My heart goes out to all of you. No matter where you are, or what kind of department you serve in, volunteer, or paid.
    Part of me rides with all of you, and stands next to you. Signed GOD

    Thank you for making this video. I got to meet John Bellew at a mutual friend's wedding, and I'm happy to've met him. I'm also grateful that I have gotten to know his wife and kids very well over the years, and am happy that Eileen has learned to smile again after this tragedy. Thank you again for making this insightful video.

    Look at the pictures of these guys - HEROES ALL - as are our police and our military. Contrast these selfless, noble men and women with the ingrates who castigate and criticize them and you have the definition of malice and callousness. Here are Americans who awaken in the morning, not knowing whether they will return to their families at night, because of their calling to protect and save veritable strangers - you and me. Rather than bestowing respect and tribute on these exemplary citizens, there are some who would subject them to scorn and derision. It is despicable!!! Every time I hear Firefighters or the Police hurrying to a call, I say a prayer for their safe return. I pray each night for our courageous soldiers. All of these responders hold a special place in my heart, as they should. God Bless and Protect All Of You. Thank you so much for your bravery, compassion and dedication. Believe me, the majority of us appreciate what you sacrifice and what you do. You are the most praiseworthy of God's children.

    Not exactly sure how it works, but Police/Firefighters should never have to work again if severely injured. I would have adsolutely no problem paying an additional tax (if they ever came up with one) to go towards that goal. Same with the Military, if they going to send them into harms way, they have to be willing to take care of them better than they currently do. God bless these people that serve.

      And very few should be paid more than the people you listed ! And I'm speaking of pro athletes. They are getting paid 100 x the amount that an Essential Service worker is receiving, and they are busting their ass to save yours !!

      Aaron Barash I’ve been a paid firefighter for 10 years and I get what your saying, but is there a channel on TV to tune into when there’s a fire? Are people paying to come see us put out a fire? The answer is no. Athletes, actors get paid what they get paid because there is a demand and huge audience for them. People will pay to see a football game or a movie. If people were paying to come see us put out a fire or tune in on TV then yeah, our pay would increase....but they don’t; hence why we don’t get paid what athletes or actors get paid.

      Hi Mike...sry, it's been awhile since I posted, so I had to go back and re-read what you're talking about. When I try to recall, I guess @ the end of the day, it doesn't matter whether you're a paid or paid on-call firefighter, the flame is all the same ! My issue is the pay for a pro athlete versus the pay for an essential service employee. Sorry, again, I can't recall what I was talking about. Stay safe !!

      Not really because it is quite common to see firefighters working in hazardous areas of a fire without hoselines which was one of the things highlighted in the report. A charged hoseline is your protection to deal with changes in conditions. If departments continue to let crews go in to structure fires without a charged line this will continue to happen. You can find many more reports in different fire departments where a similar thing has occurred since this tragedy.

    Woah, how long was that vid? 10:22.... not sure i took a breath all the way through it. That Mayday was hard to listen to. I've been in the UK Armed Forces a long time and been in the odd tense situation, but i'm well aware that the vast majority of my time was spent training. Doesn't compare to these brave souls that are "doing it for real" every time they respond. Much, much respect.

    They need to invent a harness they can have around the waist with a hook that opens up then they can exit the window and dangle until a rope is brought up to lower him down, with all of the tools they have why not that one?

    • @XXL3G1TC4NXX
      @XXL3G1TC4NXX 7 лет назад +3

      Mike Gaughan They do now. They are equipped with a system that hooks onto the window frame or wraps around a solid object and has a rappelling device with a rope. They wear a waist harness and once out the window they can lower themselves to the ground.

    • @Andy-je3el
      @Andy-je3el 5 лет назад

      this incident actually prompted the invention of a personal rescue system.. guys now carry or can get basically a small kit with 100 ft of rope, a belt which is basically a loop of webbing on steroids and a small belay device.. you run the anchor end around a beam or heavy piece of furniture and belay yourself down the ground.. you can also use waist strap on your scba as the "belt." some departments are incorporating harnesses into their gear so you can just use that as well..
