- Beauty Dishes are one of Peter's favourite light modifiers, but he doesn't use them in the traditional way others do. In this video, he will show you his tips on how he shoots with one.

Yaay with Meika again 😍
Meika is a true beauty. Thanks for showing us the beauty dish looks.
Our pleasure!
Watching Peter literally paint his models with light and angles is amazing.
Thanks
She’s an amazing model!!
Yes
That was actually my main thought in this video (sorry Peter ;) She killed it! Every move was great and in that tempo.
Of course she us.
Every time I watch another video I learn something new.
Thanks so much
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer I never understood the light quality coming from a beauty dish until this video. And ‘think out loud’ style explains why you are working in that way. So useful. I want to get better, and your videos are the best.
I think you're a hero Peter, for replying to so many comments!
Thanks John, if you're gonna take the time to ask me a question I have to take the time to answer it
I enjoy re-watching have a safe rest of the week
Thank you

Wow, thanks so much!
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer You're welcome, and you better enjoy it because usually I'm very critical and it's not often I make such a glowing compliment :))) You are a true master, This is so coincidental as I was pondering whether or not to buy a beauty dish with a grid and a sock, plus a C stand and a 600Ws flash. How crazy is it to go onto youtube and see this exact video at this time ?
Awesome pictures as aways 😍
Thank you so much 😀
This model is so incredibly beautiful, almost unreal.

Wow, I appreciate the reply, you made my week sir!!! I apologize, you’re a mentor to me and I’ve learned so much from you, so it’s like an awe moment for me. You’re skills are definitely working and changing my art skills! Thank you for all that you do, It’s an honor to hear back from you, truly made my week! Good day to you!

Once again thanks for the tutorial. Now I have to get familiar with the beauty dish once again. Haven't worked with it for a very long time.
Cheers from Mother Russia

She is Gorgeous

Peter Coulson is the best photographer
wow thank you
Hi I have been photographer over 40 years. I can see you're very talented Peter
Thanks so much
Yay! I'm 2nd! That's my big accomplishment for the week. Bec is great again. Nice lighting tutorial. I had one of those shallow dishes years ago with a Speedotron unit. Did not use it enough.
Thanks heaps :) I remember Speedotron back in the day
She is a HERO... I would love to see her do a fun/ goof ball shoot... Light hearted feel good. The type of photos that puts a smile on people's faces. These are a Great series of shots on how to use the Beauty Bowl. Thank you for sharing ❤️
Carthage, Mississippi, USA here...
Have been watching your videos on RUclips. Very interesting.
Glad you like them!
I've only watched a couple videos but I like them a lot. We need more videos that show the process, how and why it's done. Great job.
Thanks Layne
Amazing!!!! Thank you 💪👌🙌
Glad you liked it!
so talent in there ... thanks
Thank you too
Excellent! Just what I needed on a rainy morning in Wales UK! Thanks guys! Full of top class info as usual, lot's of little subtleties working with a model.
Our pleasure!
I'd love to visit Wales with my kit and tripod. Do you have a time of year you'd recommend to a Yank from Pennsylvania?
@@davidmilisock5200 Hi David, depending on what you're looking for, wildlife or landscape, would be criteria to decide what time of year and which area to visit. I'm afraid that being a people only photographer I would be hesitant to advise on this, however the Welsh tourist board would be a good place to start I think?
@@MickPayton I photograph anything, far more interested in landscape and animals than people.
I have streamed some videos shot in Wales and videos no matter where they come from are videos but the landscape in some scenes looks rugged, isolated and perfect for a person like me. However only having limited time to shoot and only one butt, I prefer to freeze it off closer to home. Looking for the best temperatures, rain doesn't bother me.
@@davidmilisock5200 You should be ok from April onwards to October with the chance off it being a bit cold in those months. The UK climate is tame compared to some locations but follow advice if hill walking, especially alone. . Cardiff is a lovely city full of phot opportunity and genuine Welsh people. Cool restaurants and art, history and culture; live music in summer (June-September)☺️
11:40 she's got Emo Phillips moves! Great video, I learned some stuff.
Thanks
Very inspiring. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love it
really liked the gridded shot. that color change that you did early one, im not sure how to do just the selective change in LR but im going to look for it
Cool. Cool. Cool.
Interesting to see how it's done.
Thank you
awesome vid thanks Peter!
Glad you enjoyed it
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer im curious wether you've done a 2 model shoot in the studio? Id be interested in seeing a video based on that, maybe down the track,
@@scott7926 We are planning on doing a shoot with Abbey and Layla soon
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer cool!
Nice ! I like using the beauty dish with a grid . I feel it gives me better control of the light .
Me too!
wowwwww is amazing
Thank you
Peter's greatest beauty dish is called Bec.
Great vid
Thank you
2:19 the most fast fashion preset creation. thanks master
Thanks Dave
Always great to see you! Thanks for the lighting tutorial.
No worries, thanks for watching
You the best of them all i love how you do everything,
I wish i can meet you one day
Am inspired ✌️✌️✌️✌️
Thank you so much 😀
Was that Peter or the Grid on the beauty dish self reflecting about being old and broken works best 😍
Me!

Thank you very much!!!
You're welcome!
That's great
master!
good Job
That filter was the cats meow! Really added to the scene.
thanks
muy genial, como todos tus trabajos muchas gracias por enseñarnos tus formas de fotografia, saludos beck, y gracias a la modelo
Gracias
That's great; encouraging too. I could probably sort myself out a beauty dish without hitting the finances too heavily. It's very interesting to hear about the fashion industry and Micre (hope I heard correctly) has some cool shapes and poses. Very impressed :)
Thanks
Nice
Wow
I love this I’m still waiting on the 50mm lens video but today I’m curious do you use this when you shoot men too?
Thanks heaps Dwayne. The lens video has been filmed, we just have a backlog of editing to get through at the moment :) I'll also doing another one about picking gear but it might be another month. And yes I use this for men and I use it a lot shooting single person corporate shots
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer I’m going to to try this Friday for a shoot I’m doing because it was brilliant! Simple and precise wow I loved it! I’m going to have to get my ass on a plane from San Francisco Ca and take a workshop or beg to watch. I’m 56 and I’m leaning so much because I shoot everyday but I’ve never had a true teacher/mentor!
This reminds me of a beauty dish question I've had for years. If you're shooting a beauty dish and you tilt the dish beyond an axis where the light from the bulb can get past the the reflector in the dish and hit the subject, are you "breaking" some of the the physics of what the dish is supposed to be doing with the light to get the beauty dish feel? Or, is there enough light coming off the dish to compensate for the bare-bulb leak?
Without a grid yes if you tilt it too far you'll lose the look of a Beauty dish but if you have a grid on it you'll struggle to get light to the subject if you tilt of axis too much
Thanks a bunch!
Absolutely LOVED this video Peter! SO much so, I've just taken delivery of my first digital h/blad - H6D (50mp - on your recommendation). If I may, can I ask about your focusing technique? I see you tilt the camera to focus on the subjects face/eyes. I see there is a 'True focus' feature that seems really clever in that it corrects once the camera is tilted back down. Is that something you use or would recommend. We are so spoiled these days with the mirrorless cameras and their massively indulgent super accurate eye detect. The Canon R3 excels! Huge thanks to you and Bec for the incredible content. Greetings from the UK.
Thanks Scott I set the camera to manual focus and then use the true focus button to auto focus
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer Super helpful. Thank you kind sir. As an aside, another influence of yours ‘The Old Fashioned’ is fast becoming my favourite tipple! Cheers! (Hic)
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer I didn't know true focus would work in manual mode. Thanks for the tip. I heard the famous Hasselblad click and just had to see all your comments. I'm researching all about beauty dishes right now.
Excellent as always. Would you use a beauty dish on someone with "older skin". I have tried without diffusion and the skin does not look good, so not sure if its me or the "older" skin.
Thank you. Yes I use a beauty dish on anyone of any age, male or female, and I've never had a problem
Awesome little tutorial. I’ve been following your work for a while now and always enjoy it. I’ve been into photography for quite a while now and have shot full frame and APSC. I’m really looking into MF and wanted to get your suggestion in regards to the H5D50c or even older models like the H4 or even H3D39-50. I don’t have a massive budget but am just drawn to those cameras. If it’s in my price range looking at older second hand H3/4ish or even trying to find an H5 or would you go more of a X1D route or even GFX50s route? I love the X1D but those lenses are crazy $$$. With an H I’d just start with say the 80mm. I plan to shoot slow and either in studio or travel landscape with it so mainly the focus difference and CCD sensor of older cameras are the biggest decision. Is True Focus a must have thing? What’s your experience if any with the older CCD cameras? Thanks in advance
The older CCD cameras have great dynamic range very poor ISO. True focus is handy but it's not something you have to have I would go for a 5D over 4D any day.
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer awesome thanks so much for the quick reply. Do the original H5 have CCD and upgraded to the CMOS with the 50-c wireless? I think I would try to get the H5-.50c as it would be a little more money but not be outdated for a while hopefully. Still a great too for a long time to come. Updated back display and a bit more modern and new.
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer also comparing day an older H4 or H5 to say a modern GFX50s/r or even X1D for that matter what would you say guides you to the H series if you have experience with the other cameras mentioned. One of the main reasons I’d go with an H is the lenses seem more reasonable than the X lenses and two even though I use an EVF on my XT3 I sort of prefer the old school view finer even over looking at the back through live view.
I find the best is to try and get my hands on some of this gear and give it a try because you won't know till you try it and it cost a lot of money if you don't like it after you've bought it
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer yeah it’s pretty easy to rent a X1D or Fuji but finding a H5 is a bit more challenging. Thanks for the help though!
Hi Peter and Bec. Im overwhelmed with the work you do.
Ive been watching some of your videos.
I have a question: Models must always look at the camera???
Thank you.
Thanks Jose, for my camera yes, it is easy to get a pretty look away shot but much harder when the camera looks straight down the lens because you can see every thoughts and emotion of them Model
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer thank you so much.
Great video! What degree of grid (20, 25, 40) would you recommend for beauty portraits? Thank You!
Thanks, sorry I have no idea what degree the grid is of never measured it and only came with that grid
Nice....
The beauty dish has a great look, almost oil paint type shadowing. Really nice…is it flash only or can it be constantly on?
Beauty dishes wont take the heat of a constant light
Indeed, I've seen a couple of "LED beauty dishes" but they really aren't the same.
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer thanks Peter.
nice
hello sir, and Bec. could you possibly put a link for the salon camera stand you use or a smaller one please? im setting up my studio here very very soon and would like to get one. thanks in advance!!
