This is a big project but for my purposes it's worth the work. At the school where I work there is an extra curricular STEM class. This is ideal for teaching every aspect of STEM. Thank you for publishing this, you've saved me a lot of design time.

This set up has so far, from what ive seen, been the best. Alot of the others struggling with the smoke trails destabilising before hitting the model. Looks like being able to control the flow of smoke as well as the speed of air could be key.

You should see this kid's home made wind tunnel with resolution of 11 smoke streams.
He used his wind tunnel for his project to visualize David Beckham's banana free kick.

I'm thinking a fog machine or a hazer would be a better bet. Have the fog/smoke settle in a container and the natural vacuum effect from the wind tunnel will draw it out

@@tomstefanac4515 what I've done is got a glass jar, put warm water in it and then some Dry Ice... when dry ice mixes with warm water it releases a thick white mist
Them I'm putting a an air pump on top of the jar which will force Air into the jar, pushing the newly created mist out of a tube in the jar, into the tunnel

Id bet that breathing the air outside is just as "toxic" or less than a little glycerin vapor..
If it concerns you that much, why not just get an oragnic vapor respirator for your experiments? They're cheap so you cant use the cost escape :).
IMO, the vapor method has better results and is safer than CO2..being that CO2 can and will suffocate you. I guess pick your flavor of brain damage and roll with it lol.
Many times knowledge comes at the cost of a scientists life, wheather they knew it or not. How far are you willing to go for your field of study?
      Edit: grammar and point correction

It's pure glycol...all it does when hot is low temp steam, essentially...So don't get pre-mixed solutions...just buy the glycol like this dude did. Also a hot wire instead of a the e-cigarette, put in a small container with glycol, with a positive pressure inlet from a small air-pump or the sort would do the "breathing" part for you so no need to use your lungs and it will also be linear and give a steady flow...

The only thing I would change is to cap the mouthpiece, cut a long slot in the back of the manifold and attach a smoke box behind the straws. I would then connect an air pump to the vaporizer and use it to fill the smoke box. I’d mount the manifold horizontally and use a piece of cardboard on the exhaust to control the airspeed.

I've seen a small air pump used to force air through a vape so you can have constant flow of smoke. However, I noticed that the top line was the strongest, and the lines got progressively weaker towards the bottom. Without running an individual tube from the vape to each tube, and without adjusting the diameter of the lines, what could you do to accomplish balanced smoke lines from top to bottom? Maybe internal baffles inside the vertical pipe?

    • @dadsfriendlyrobotcompany
      @dadsfriendlyrobotcompany 2 года назад +4

The paths would need to have the same resistance. The longer the tube, the more resistance. What you can do is cap the pipes with successively larger outlets to impede the tubes on the top and let the lower ones have less resistance

Closer smoke outlets and why not strobe the LEDs for some cool stop motion effects.
You could time the shutter to open just before and soon after the strobe.

@@stoppi Actually you have to keep same Reynolds number, it depends on the model Length. The smaller the miniature is the faster air needs to go, also the boundary layers from the tunnel walls may mess up your flow! Really cool project, but some mods may help you to get better results
