    Crazy, devon goes on an absolute tear during his pumpkin sport specific training. 3-0s prudnik, trolled against genadi, Toyed with dave, 3-0s ermes, 3-0s denis, toys with giorgi… loses again to levan and now all of a sudden his training is no good and should have been doing x, y, z. No amount of bench/bicep curls would bave made a difference vs levan. The dude is a freak who is also extremely technical.

      he doesn't have to increase body fat he just needs some sensible full rom hypertrophy training that will make him stronger and less prone to injuries. All strongmen need hypertrophy phases or accessories, you need to build mass to reach your maximum absolute strength. Training his full body in higher rep ranges with full rom will also decrease his chance of injuries. When your top end bicep curl strength is high but not your bottom, that's not good at all!

    All else held equal (fiber-type composition for example) If you use a particular mucle then that muscle could generate more force if it had a greater volume of active muscle tissue. So if you're a super-heavy, or if you're near the lower-end for your weight-class, I see no reason why putting in a hypertrophy routine in between your strength workouts, targeting muscles that are actually used in armwrestling, wouldn't do you any good. At every point in my past when I've gotten noticeably stronger, I also got noticeably bigger. Even if the relationship isn't exactly linear, there's still a strong positive correlation. Almost always bigger does mean stronger.

    As someone who has a doctorate and over 10 years of experience inside the health and fitness world, I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that Devon should have been training closer to what the Georgian team has been doing all along. The research is very clear that full RoM and also training into resistance and eccentrics for any muscle is FAR superior for both strength and muscle-tissue gains. Not only this, but strengthening your entire body increases the literal ceiling of power output you can possibly generate or resist in any given body part. Imagine if Devon's biceps, lats, pecs, legs, core, and shoulders (just to name a few) were just as proportionally strong to his forearm and hand? Imagine how much heavier in pure lean muscle tissue he'd be, and then think of how much force his body would be able to produce and resist... Its really basic physics. Only training hyper-specific muscles in very small RoM will have a HARD CAP on the power output one can exert. Period. The fact that he was able to get to this level while doing such tunnel-vision and inefficient training is just a testament to his work ethic, time committed, and genetics.

    • @Melajied
      @Melajied Месяц назад +1

      I believe doing both is going to maximize strength and muscle gain. Devon way of training is just perfect for arm wrestling specific movement considering how he got to the no 2 spot. Levan's training on the other hand is really good for overall strength and muscle gain. What do you think?

    • @themasterkey3
      @themasterkey3 Месяц назад +4

      @@Melajied Both types of training are required to hit the theoretical highest limits of arm wrestling. Devon's problem is hes only doing 1 style, while everyone else is doing both. Like I said at the end of the comment, its a testament to the work hes put in and how naturally gifted he is that he could reach that level with only 1 way. There is no mystery about how to optimize the body's force production and resistance, and its by doing a mixture of both specific and non-specific strength.

      Devon mentioned several times that traditional way of training the whole body doesn't work for him (anymore). It may be because of injuries or some other reasons, but he tried all the methods and finally found the most efficient way for him to still improve at armwrestling. Calling it inefficient is actually kinda disrespectful knowing how dedicated he is to get stronger and better while also being a master of this sport.

      @themasterkey3 Месяц назад

      @@rufusw1992 You proved my point within your first sentence. The key word is: "(anymore)".
      My whole argument is imagine he trained this way his whole career before he was so broken he couldn't even straighten out his arms for example... What I'm saying is LITERALLY the opposite of disrespectful: Devon is beating almost the entire competition in a broken body, lighter bodyweight, and with a limited training capability due to tons of injuries... He's literally clowning everyone with how much naturally better and dedicated he is to the craft. What's more respectable than being basically #1 with handicaps?

    • @rufusw1992

Devon is one of the greatest of all time while being relatively skinny for an arm wrestler in the open category. Or, just straight up train straight side pressure Todd Hutchings style and do JM presses for elbow rehab.
    Levan has a weakness, it’s in his wrist, Devon established that, but Levan’s pronator remained intact. In round 1, as Levan transitioned to a press because his wrist was compromised, Devon should have come forward like he did with Denis, with the high hook, cutting off Levan’s bone line and attacking his pronator up high. Devon retreating to the Kings move stretched him out to much, and he lost his center table strength too quickly.

    Is he broken or is he healthy? Before the match, he made that video saying he went for an MRI or whatever and was given a "clean bill of health." So is he broken or not? There are machines that terminate elbow extension at specific points so that you don't have to risk straightening an injured elbow. Devon is always saying, "find a way." My guy, every title that a Georgian contended for at EvW 12 flew back to Tbilisi with said title wrapped around the waist. Specialized training? Yes. Throwing all of your other lanes out the window by not doing a conventional lifting stack? WHY TF WOULD YOU DO THAT?! Obviously, his methods have merit, but that does not mean that 1. they are without flaw / 2. that they cannot be improved upon or complimented with other things. When the vast majority of elite-level athletes in a given sport rely on time tested methods, that one guy and gets to an elite level doing some wacky shit (in MMA, Tony Ferguson...) does not prove the uselessness or the non-necessity of the time tested methods. In MMA, no one should train like Tony Ferguson. "But he won an interim title! several fight unbeaten streak! He's a legend!" Sure, but *how much better* might he have been had he done what almost every other equally if not more incredible fighter had been doing ( and what they continue to do) for years and years? Listen to Volkanovski talk about his training methods. Or Khabib, or Georges St-Pierre, or Jose Aldo, or Henry Cejudo, or Kyle Snyder, or Abdulrashid Sadulaev, or whoever else, and you're not going to find any of the wild wacky shit that Tony Ferguson or other people like Jiri does.
    Not that Devon's lifts are wacky. It's that focusing on them at the expense of everything else is ill advised, even if you are able to leverage the results they do give to great success. How much more could he have done with all that he did + biceps, chest, and back workouts? I absolutely, positively love Devon. He is one of my biggest inspirations generally, but... maybe he should have used all that time he spent tripping on Ketamine for whatever reason lifting weights instead. Again, I love Devon, but I always had to lie to myself about this aspect of his training in order to have hope about his stopping power against Levan were Levan able to bring Devon's hand close to the pin pad.
    Regarding that, Devon was willing to let Levan snap his arm clean in half in the kings move from a horrible position in round 1 but doesn't think he can find a way to range of motion biceps and brachioradialis lifts without injuring himself? Come on man, I've got untreated adhesive capsulitis in my left shoulder and still compete in amateur mma. Find a way, Dev! Always find a way.

    he needs the extra muscle mass, and power across the entire range of motion, but i doubt devon will just start doing it now

    of course bicep curls help...of course bench will help with pressing...this isn't subjective, it's strength training...it won't add that much to his power, but it will add some, which may be enough to have him compete with Levan one day

    I dont think its the bicep curls and bench press that are the difference between Devon and the Georgians, i think its what theyre willing to put in their body that is the difference.

    Devon should have done heavy cheat and seated curls for at least a year before Levan. Passive bicep activation from pronation and riser lifts wasn't enough, and back pressure is his weak point, been known for a while.

    It’s not hypertrophy tho. That’s more bodybuilding. The heavy training for max bicep strength is less about muscle growth and more about top end strength. I think Devon does what he does but adds in a back pressure lift and a nice specific lift that would benefit. But if injuries prevent what can you do?🤷🏼‍♂️

    Devon saying he's not doing these exercices because he is broken is simply shit.
    Everyone can bench,squat, press or Deadlift. The reason is motivation, he certainly hate them and chose to specialise to stay 100% armwrestler, bad idea imo.

    Devon is no super heavy yet he beat all the best guys and should have beaten Genadi as well. So a heavy weight in reality was the top man until the monster Levan came back. Devon's training was fine as it was more focusewd to be the best at his weight. Who is going to beat him at 115kg when the majority of monsters at Super couldn't get the job done.

    I would say all he really has to do is take pancakes and do about 6 months of georgian style training, while maintaining his isometric training, and then it would pay dividends, could probably beat Levan since Devon would be adding a toolset to a toolset which Levan doesn't have. People act like Levan is invincible. No, Levan has poor genes (wannabe strongman) that were enhanced by tons of pancakes. Devon is a natural so if he adds even half of the muscle Levan has Levan is finished. Everyone keeps telling him this but he never listens. ANyways it doesn't matter anymore as Brian Shaw is about to kill everyone in super heavyweight within a year.

    devon's training routine is really terrible and he overtrains. he would get better progress from not training as often. anyways devon isn't built to put on much muscle, hes naturally a very skinny guy without explosive muscle fibers. so maybe he can't get strong no matter what.

  • @user-qz5km2qc2q

    No one is going to beat Levan. He's a fucking giant and his size advantage is so obvious it's not even worth talking about. I have no idea why people can't understand this. Brian Shaw is the only other human who would even have a chance against Levan. It takes another giant to beat a giant. Figure it out already. You can talk training and technique all you want but the fact remains that Levan is the biggest man in the history of the sport and he will remain undefeated until someone equal or larger in size and strength comes along. End of discussion.
