Courtney wrote this song for her grandmother. She said in interview once that her grandmother wanted her to do a song that she didn't scream and just sing. This is very emotional song
Oh my goodness, what a touching song and background to it -Andrea
Specifically, her grandmother wanted her to sing at her funeral, which was never able to happen because pandemic travel restrictions.
Iirc the video producer also had a grand parent with Alzheimer’s at the same time. A merger of both people I think.
@@ugg10video76 has. She is still very much alive, but you are correct.
@@bradkohl99Indeed - Dylan Hryciuk of Versa Films worked very closely with Courtney on this (Courtney composes the lyrics and vocal melodies of Spiritbox’s songs). The name of his grandmother is Constance and it is Constance herself who is shown in the old black and white photo. The young actor playing the grandson actually looks like a younger version of Dylan and is wearing some of Dylan’s old clothes. Courtney has mentioned that her tears in the video were real. It took her several months before she could perform this track live, due to her emotions over the loss of her grandmother, Phyllis.
The breakdown that gets heavier and more distorted is what gets me every time - the musical representation of dementia, descending into internal confusion and chaos. It reminds me of my Papa, and it's definitely a topic that hits a vast majority of people in the heart.
Yeah that was a really cool touch with the breakdown! And definitely hits you right in the feels😥 Makes me think of my dad... --Dallas
@@dna2001 all my love and hugs, D. ❤️ It never goes away, but it slowly gets easier. It's nice to know we aren't alone in all of that.
This was one of those songs that was instantly like a laser beam into the feels. Get's me ever time, thinking about my grandmother. Seeing comments below, I think this was a combo where the director's grandmother had dementia and Courtney's grandmother passed away from Covid and she wasn't able to go to her funeral due to the restrictions.
Lost my mom a three years ago to dementia. It was brutal. This song and video rips my heart out every time. Saw them live last year and I was so worried they would play this…and they did. I hurt. I cried. But it was a wonderful and touching moment. Only time I’ve ever cried at a concert in my 53 years.
I’m sorry for your loss ❤ but I’m glad that the song you were worried about at the concert ended up being a nice moment where you could let some emotion out.
So sorry for your loss💜
I've been to soooo many live gigs, mostly metal, over the last 30 years. Some absolutely incredible shows that will always stay with me. Last year I saw Spiritbox live for the first time, and that whole gig has gone down in my top 5 ever live shows. Absolutely incredible artists
As someone who lost their Grandmother to Alzheimer’s, I cry every single time I listen to this song so I try not to often but yeah. This is an amazing song for those who have gone through losing someone to Alzheimer’s or Dementia.
A note about the ending, the band said it’s supposed to mimic someone descending into madness.
So sorry for your loss💜
@@dna2001 thank you 🙏🏻❤️
Spiritbox is a must see live band! You would enjoy it.
I feel like we both would like to see them live! We have both really enjoyed their music so far! 😊-Dallas
Courtney wrote this song as a tribute to her grandmother who died from Alzheimers. Great reaction as always ladies. This song made me cry the first time I heard it as well.
Correction, her grandmother passed away from Alzheimer’s. But it was during Covid and Courtney could not travel to be there for the funeral due to the travel restrictions.
@@iiitzHimmyThanks for the correction.
@@joesweeney3089 you’re welcome ☺️
Absolutely one of the most amazing voices in music, this song tears your heart out for sure❤️
It’s okay to cry! This video makes me ugly weep everytime! Lost my grandmother to long and horrible dementia. Thankful she no longer has to suffer.
Metalheads had the same reaction when this song came out a few years back. It's a tough video to watch, but definitely a beautiful song.
With that said and certainly off topic, you two have a Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey (Pam and Angela from The Office) vibe and I love it.
That is literally the highest compliment!! The office is one of my favorite shows (as long as I’m Pam lol)😂 Anyways it’s a beautiful song, but definitely hits home for sure.-Dallas
I had the same thought! I listen to the Office Ladies podcast and this feels like Office Ladies react. I love it 💜
Lost my grandpa to dementia....definitely hits hard...shows how the ppl who have this disease and what it affects it has...❤❤❤
This one hit home for me as well. I lost my grandma to dementia and my dad is starting to show signs. So sorry about your grandpa. 💜-Dallas
Right in the F***ing feels. You two on a roll with emotional tracks (of mice and men). If I may suggest “ Band: The plot in you. Song: Time changes everything. It may be up your alley
This is what metal is about for me, no other genre touches emotional subjects better imo.
definitely a sad song. sorry to hear it hits close to home Dallas, hang in there luv ❤ it good to have a shoulder to cry on in situations like that. Great video as always, keep it up (both of you) xx
Nice reaction. Very emotional and powerful song. I think we all can relate to it's meaning. Here is who the song is dedicated too.
The track is a beautiful tribute to both singer Courtney LaPlante's grandmother, Phyllis, who died and Courtney was trapped in the states during covid lock down, and video director Dylan Hryciuk's grandmother, Constance, who is currently battling the late stages of dementia.
Go back and watch the music video in your free time, but pay attention to everything in the background, the entire time. You’ll see things from the very beginning starting to vanish, but it only becomes noticeable if you’re lookin for it, or when the song nears its end and it becomes more intense.
This one hits hard. Loved the reaction!
This song hits me so hard. I can only listen to it a couple of times per year. This song is dedicated to Courtney's grandma, whom she couldn't go to her funeral due to Covid travel restrictions at that time. Courtney said: "I always promised her that I would sing at her memorial service, because she always requested a 'pretty song with none of that scary screaming.' I hoped writing this song with no 'scary screaming' in it would help me find a sense of closure." May I make a couple other song suggestions by Spiritbox. "Ultraviolet" or "Too Close/Too Late". Both songs are Courtney doing clean vocals. Too Close/Too Late is my favorite off their last EP.
I lost my grandma 4 years ago she was my best friend and everytime I hear this it rips my heart out I miss you grandma❤
Oh my goodness! So sorry for your loss. Losing a loved one is always so hard. It’s a tough song for sure, but beautifully written.
I’ve been really excited for this one to come out! I’m pretty sure we all collectively cried when the song was released. This also hits home for me as well so when I first saw this I bawled my eyes out. This is one of those songs where I have to be in a particular headspace to listen to or else I’ll just get too emotional. But it is such a beautifully composed song. When that chorus hits it gives me chills because that chorus is huge and is so full. I’m glad you two enjoyed it!
It was an amazing song!!! But I get what you're saying, I'd definitely have to be in the right mood to listen to this song in the future just because it's so sad and relatable for sure. --Dallas
@@dna2001 yeah exactly. When I listen to the Eternal Blue album sometimes this is the only song I skip over. The song is no way by any means what you would call a “skipper” because the song is amazing and so beautiful. It’s just based on my mood at the time.
The breakdown at the end coincides with the lady suffering from dementia. Too haunting.
This song broke me the first time I heard it. I was talking to Mike, the guitarist/composer prior to it being released, and he was so nervous about this one being released. It was right in the middle of the song releases prior to their full album coming out, and if people didn’t like it, it could have completely derailed all their momentum.
You're correct, this is about one of the band member's grandmother going through Dementia. The slow growing build up of the heavy riffs throughout are indicative of the dementia getting worse. It's a beautiful song, but very sad. Great reaction ladies!
It’s actually about 2 seperate things. The song is about Courtney losing her grandmother during the pandemic and not being allowed to travel back to the US to be at the funeral. The video is about Dylan’s grandmother, who is the guy who is responsible for all the cinematography for this one. Dylan’s family is dealing with his grandma, named Constance, going through Dementia/Alzheimer’s.
The photo of the nurse is an actual photo of Dylan’s grandmother.
This song and video always make me cry, and I cried again along with you guys =\
I felt this one for sure. I’m currently dealing with this with a close family member and it’s really hard to see.-Dallas
Check out Donna by darko us. That’s another tear jerker

Not sure the likelihood of you checking it out, but Beautiful James by placebo is a REALLY good one
Are you okay, Dallas? Well, are both of you okay? Mostly Dallas though since she said it hits close to home. ☹️
Thanks for asking Charlotte, and yes I’m doing ok☺️. My dad over the last 1-2 years has started developing progressively more dementia/forgetfulness so that’s why this video/song made me think of him… -Dallas
@@dna2001 I’m glad you’re okay but sorry to hear about your dad 🥺 that sounds really tough to have to watch a parent struggle like that. I’m here for you if you ever need to talk or anything! 🖤
Thanks Charlotte, I appreciate you💜
She is really good but daaamn that was sad… 😢😢😢 growing old could be something beautiful in the right conditions but at times like this… it’s so sad and unfair…
I know!! I was trying to hold it together! 😭 You’re right aging can be beautiful, but man it can so sad as well. This one really hits home for me. -Dallas
Still no Paleface?
We have a done a paleface song.
Not saying react to it, but if you want a bigger cry check out the acoustic version.
Oh lord! 😭
Oof. Yep. I dunno if you can even just call it an acoustic version because of the strings that accompany.
Yes, get the tissues out for it.
