    the secret:
    do one minute whatever task you want, every day. that will set up a sort of feedback loop and might help you extend that one minute to longer time periods, over the coming days.

    Starting is always the hardest part.
    I always set two goals - a 'stretch' goal and a 'better than nothing' goal. This strategy allows me to be ambitious with my goal while having something to fall back on if I'm really not feeling it.

      @@seneca7170  @Nithyasri S
      Yeah, so if you want to pick up a new habit (for example running), you set two goals. The first goal is the bare minimum that you will always be able to do, even on your worst days (e.g. running 1 minute). The second goal is the more ambitious goal that is more on the edge of your ability (e.g. running 5km). This way, you have something to shoot for if you complete goal #1, but if you're having a bad day, you can always just complete goal #1 and call it good.

    • @nithyasris7877

    There is a phrase in cognitive psychology/therapy that is similar. "Anything worth doing is worth doing badly" it's homework towards anti-perfectionism/anti all or nothing thinking. Also my personal new phrase, One step at a time, one thing at a time small steps count.

    Honestly, this is exactly the thinking that I had going into this new year and the goals I set for myself. Not necessarily one minute, but ridiculously easy things to do at the start of the year and then build up on them so that by the end of the year I might be where I actually want.

    Summary of the video
    1. Doing something is better than nothing even though it is just 1 minute .
    2. Being ambitious require more motivation . If the motivation is not sufficient you will slack off from your habit due to " resistance " and fear of failure underachieving
    3. It is better to start small and embrace small gain . Build up the habit daily until you reach " auto pilot " i.e. doing something naturally , intuitively without thinking even if you tired/ don't have time etc cetera .
    4. Aim to achieve " autopilot " habit , for it is the golden moment that is being the most productive you can get effortlessly .

He said, "If you feel you really don't have time to read the Scriptures today, open the book, read, 'And it came to pass...' Then you may close the book and get back your busy schedule. You will be amazed to find how much better you feel about yourself. Do it every day, and I promise you that before long you will want to read some more."

    This actually should work very well. I guess the biggest problem would be the getting started part and the fact this is applicable only to simple stuff like the mentioned running. If one wants to pick up swimming, but the nearest pool is half an hour away by car, or painting, but setting up the canvas and preparing paints and whatnot takes over 10 minutes by itself, then the whole 1-minute idea loses its meaning. Nevertheless, it should be beneficial if applied to right things.

    • @PaperRaines

      There are no right things for this, this was trite nonsense for lazy people who want shortcuts to nowhere
      There is no hack, you want different or better? Then start doing it. Whatever you're doing now, stop that, and get to work. That's it
      You can't treat a better life like cooking rice or oatmeal, there's a 1-minute express version. Doesn't work like that, never has, and never will

    • @Oculunus
      @Oculunus 3 года назад

      @@PaperRaines The thing is, some people are lazy and need shortcuts and special methods. Of course, there aren't any magical tricks to changing your life, hard work is key, but things like this 1-minute are very useful for actually getting stuff done.
      It's just that the thing she said is correct. It's easy to do nothing, because one assumes they have to fully engage from the get go. With running, some people don't start, because they think they have to buy running shoes, running clothes, run 2 hours per day and maybe eat healthy, because they exercise now. Actually starting something just for the sake doing something else than nothing isn't all that obvious.

    • @PaperRaines
      @PaperRaines 3 года назад

      @@Oculunus Lazy person does the bare minimum, because they haven't committed to actually starting the work, it is *highly* unlikely they make any kind of consequential change
      What _is_ overwhelmingly likely is they will add a new activity that they quit to their probably already long list, and that in turn leads to disappointment. Disappointment leads to more resistance to starting things, because you believe yourself less and less that you can do anything.
      And around, and around, and around, the cycle goes.... if there was a magic secret to make people better and get them going, you wouldn't hear about it on random afternoon on RUclips
      Voluntarily pick your sacrifice, then do the work. Or be honest with yourself about what and who you are and be at peace with that. This industry of giving average people false hope isn't a joke, a bunch of people running about disappointed in themselves has an impact. That's just the harsh reality

    • @victorcates9330
      @victorcates9330 2 года назад

      It's explained in an anecdotal way, bound to the specifics of a person and a particular habit. The full habit for a minute of running is having the habits to have exercise equipment ready, taking the time to get dressed and probably having time to have a shower (if only in anticipation of the habit developing further). There may be added barriers built in that may blow out the activity to 30 minutes. I had adopted something similar. I'd walk a km a day (a minimal amount). I did it for months. But no habit formed. It was still a chore. I lost a decent amount of weight, but didn't feel any better in terms of mood. I just suspect that her success with her habit may hinge on some specifics. She seems organized enough (kinda type A) to not struggle with having an outfit ready. The TED audience may filter/skew on a similar psychology. And running seems like it might be something where you might get rewards with a small sliver of time.

Because I wanted to make up for everything I couldn't do in those years and obviosly I didn't want to be bad at any of them. so guess what. I did nothing. absoloutly nothing. The better-than-nothing (aka "any progress is still progress") paradigm is specious because it doesn't take into account other things that could have been done with those resources. For example, imagine a movie studio spending $100M and five years to make a movie that ends up returning a $1 profit. Sure, it's still profit, but you have to consider that it's a $1 for five years of work and wonder what other movies they could have done in that time and with that money.

    I would say that introducing the concept of better is already a problem. You're not a better person because you do something today than something else you did in the past (of course, disconsidering things like doing bad things to other people). You're just different. Someone that runs everyday is not inherent a better person than someone that doesn't.

    • @rosemary709
      @rosemary709 3 года назад

      objectively no, but "better" in itself is very subjective. if you feel better about yourself, that means you're better, that's it. and better can mean a lot of things. it can mean you're happier, healthier or that you learnt a new thing. it all depends on the context
