I really like that the author didn't try to find him an excuse. He's just an irresponsible father and that's great because in anime you tend to have either noble extra virtuous parents or straight up evil parents. Ging is just a bad dad

It’s so brilliant that Gon reaches his father at the top of the largest tree in the known world (Gon’s view of Ging and a metaphor for his journey to find him) only to realize it is a stunted sapling that can never truly mature (basically Ging as a father and a person)

While during the war, there was a hard cut to filler because the anime caught up to the manga.
While another good example for filler was in Black Clover. The manga does a timeskip of 6 around months so the whole cast can train. While the in anime for awhile, they was covering what kind of training the cast did in the 6 month skip.

Leorio is my favourite character in the series. I just love characters who go against the archetype of their world. His noble goal to become a doctor in such a terrifying world is beautiful to me. It might also just be because I have a kinda deadbeat dad like Gon and Leorio has such dad vibes even though he's supposed still a teenager. I remember watching the anime and this arc in particular made him one of my favourite fictional characters. The last ed in the anime where the main 4 are standing watching the sky as 'Hyori Ittai' plays in the background where the short scene of Leorio looking back to Kurapika always gets me. R.I.P. Basiclly the manga hints that Gon can regain his nen abilities, there are still some setups with Gon that didn't get pay offs, there is relatively recent chapter (don't remember which one) that has a cover that points out the absence of Gon and Killua and (kinda major spoilers) the story is setting up the introduction of another member of Gon's family, who is clearly being set up to be important and has a very simillar name to Gon...

And because he's had some pretty major character development since the start of the series, I think he might even fall under a different Nen category now.
But I also never thought Gon had stopped being a protagonist in this series, so I just figured the Nen loss had to be temporary. And if you're going to go out of your way to make Gon rediscover his Nen, like I assumed was the case, it didn't make sense to me for him to just return to having the same power. I love how Ging gives this wonderful explanation on what an apology should mean to Gon before he meets Kite. And yet Ging himself never apologizes to Gon for being an awful parent. At least the reader never gets that satisfying moment. Because if he were to apologize to Gon, Ging would have to follow his own rule and promise Gon that he would be a better parent. And Ging knows he could never be that for his son. Once he left Whale Island and Gon with Mito, he couldn’t go back. It’s selfish and tragic yet really well done. It shows that Ging is consistent and that an apology should be a powerful thing.

Fantastic review, glad to see the series back!
There's some GREAT cosmic irony and poetic justice in this arc that goes unnoticed by most people.
In the end of the Greed Island arc, Accompany took Gon to Kite instead of Ging because of Ging's unfair request (vol 18, page 164). Ging said "I suppose I could see him if he came by himself", but he "didn't want to see a wimp who has to have his friends around all the time". His friend quickly calls him out on that. "Why is he a wimp if he has friends?" "I don't get it." "You just don't want to feel self-conscious." and thinks "He's such a shy sourpuss."
Cut down to the Election arc, when Gon finally meets Ging for the first time. Gon not only is surrounded by tons of friends - who are the reason he was healed (in other words, not a sign of weakness) - but their meeting happens in front of THE ENTIRE HUNTER ASSOCIATION while all the spotlights are on them LOL Ging "didn't want to feel self-conscious" but instead he got called out on being a bad father by an entire crowd of people.
    Togashi is a genius.
Edit: also, little trivia: Pariston Hill = Paris Hilton.

About the relationship between Gon and Killua:
    1) One of the most realistic depictions of friendship in anime
    2) Keep in mind they are both child with unique raising enviroment
Gon is egoistic, not in an evil way but he is and that's why he "uses" Killua, something that we see as wrong but for Gon it isnt wrong. Killua doesnt idealize Gon but still would do anything for him because Gon was his light (same as Killua is Iklago's light) and that's why he seems dependent on Gon, but at the end he isn't dependant anymore.
The things is that Gon would do anything for Killua, the difference is that Killua wouldn't create the kind of situations that Gon creates.
Remember that Gon was the one who went to rescue Killua on the Zoldyck arc. The ballance is the same, the difference is in the reckless personality of Gon.

While Ging is a deadbeat dad, I really like him as a character and his whole thought process to me is really interesting. Even when he responded to Leorio with "did he say he wants me to go see him?" I thought about it for a while when I saw that scene, and I feel like Gon probably wouldn't have actually wanted Ging to go for him because of the challenge given to him by GIng to find him and everything he's done and gone through to try and find him. That and Ging is obviously uncomfortable meeting Gon after abandoning him which he makes clear in the tape he gave Gon and in the flashback at the end of Greed Island too, so it's not ALL noble.
I think Gon would have felt kinda cheated if GIng went to see him. He's still not a good dad, I think Gon even says after meeting him that he feels more like an uncle to him, but it seems to me like he knew exactly what Gon would have wanted despite not being around Gon since he was just a couple years old. Everybody in the series seems to hate him, but I think he's actually a lot smarter and more thoughtful than he actually lets on.
Maybe it's not that deep, but Ging is very interesting as a character to me and I don't think he really does or says anything without a reason. Even if it makes him seem like the bad guy. He just doesn’t care what anyone thinks, at least not enough to stop him from doing whatever he wants.

There is a very old fan theory that is relevant to this topic. I dont want to argue about its validity or defend it as 'true' as it is only a theory, but i wanted to mention it as a hypothetical that is interesting to consider... that is the infamous "Pregnancy Stone" greed island card origin theory for Gon. Its pretty straight forward, you can find countless reddit threads presenting the arguments and evidence. The tldr is that Gon 'might' be sort of a clone of Ging created from nen and the greed island card, hence he has a memory card and was there as a baby due to being born within greed island by Ging caring around the pregnancy stone after creating the game.
"IF" true, Gon has no mother, wasnt born due to romance gone bad, or sexual irresponsibility, and theres no tragically dead or mysteriously unknown absent mother. Accounting for this complicates the rational and moral reasoning of everyone involved beyond your typical 'deadbeat dad' scenario and brings in a heap of new questions. It could imply Gons entire conception was a bit of an experiment, and a result of the Greed island project which thus wouldnt be there to train Gon, but the basis for his existance to begin with. If Gon were a 'genetic clone' of Ging, he would be different due to environment, experiences, epigenetics ect, however have similarly high nen potential and as much similarities at their starting point as twins, separated at birth. If Ging is viewing Gon in that context, his apprehension to get involved makes sense, considering his ideals as a hunter.
In this hypothetical however, the idea of calling Ging a deadbeat dad doesnt fit as well anymore due to all the context changes. It would mean Ging doesnt see or feel himself to be a 'father' in the typical sense because in the traditional sense, he isnt. One could argue that it makes Ging look even more irresponsible, depending on your values and how you headcanon this theory. Its not clear this would this make Ging a 'better' or more morale person. In my opinion, it makes Ging worse in some aspects, but renders some critiques of him less relevant, less certain, oversimplified, or incorrect in the details. What pisses people off most seems to be 'implied head canon' that fills the void of information concerning Ging and Gon. For example, most viewers tend to assume that Ging knocked someone up, that someone is either missing or dead, and Ging did not step up and take responsibility. However we dont actually know barely anything about what occured and why. In the manga canon, Mito admits 'vaguely' that she lied to Gon about the past, albeit not giving a full narrative. She admits to taking custody of Gon via the legal system, implying that she campaigned against his ability to be a proper father. I think most would agree with her, but we do not know the details and we never get the entire context. The 2011 anime changed a lot of this so not everyone is aware that there is some questions and contraversy there.
That aside, one could argue that this alternative theory is much more selfishly eccentric, requires insane hubris, and lack of regard for potential consequences to intentionally clone yourself using experimental wacky nen cards as if it were a casual side project, and with no intention of controlling the outcome. I think this holds especially true in the context of HxH's fantasy setting, considering Gon inherited his immense aura and potential from Ging. If IRL you created a clone of yourself in a lab, might it be difficult to define that relationship? What level of involvement would you take in their development? It depends on your values and goals i think... if you dont want them to be a copy of you or to control who they become, is that the 'same' as a sterotypical absent or neglectful parent? I cant answer these sort of questions objectively, and when we consider how things work in this fantasy world it becomes more complicated. I merely think its interesting to consider the scenario through these lenses, and stimulates more reflection and contemplation than is given to the situation when being summed up and simplified to Ging = deadbeat dad = the end.
Given what we learned about Ging by now, in this hypothetical its plausible that from Ging's perspective, having too much influence on Gon would be the worst thing he could do, based on his values. He is drawn to unknowns, wanting to see what he hasnt seen or learn what has yet to be learned. Such a character wouldnt find it interesting or desirable to clone himself and control how the child turned out. He also values individual and unique talents, personalities, and capabilities, similar to but less extreme than Netero imo. Wether it began as a whimsickle experiment or an intricate long term plan, it makes sense to hypothesize Ging would want the child to develop down a unique path different from his and become as unique an individual as possible. I think a bit of this logic applies to Gings point of view regardless if Gon were a clone or not. I think we can agree that despite all his flaws, Ging isnt a malevolent evil scientist, nor the worst person for being absent as a father, he seems to round out to be chaotic neutral, perhaps? Ofc i still have to concede, just as everyone has said, he is an mostly absent and thus inept caretaker/parent/teacher/father... regardless. That may not be as bad as it seems given the unique context, or it may be far worse... but one good thing about that theory is that theres room for nuance and subjectivity, and creativity on the readers part to fill in the mostly blank context.
Despite this long post on the matter... i never liked pregnancy stone to be honest. It seemed an insane idea the first time i read it, overly and unnecessarily bizare to be the origins of our protag. It only persists because Togashi refuses to answer questions about Gons origins and has given us no other plausible theories beyond pure speculative head canons. I often wondered if its Togashi trolling us a bit, but ultimately i do tend to like having some unexplained mysteries within a story that explains so fully and clearly the details it focuses on directly. Wether we consider it a joke or legit, i have come around to admit that its an interesting theory to consider and changes the discussion of Ging's character 'imo'.

There's a particular favorite scene of mine that not a lot of people talk about, and that's the short flashback scene between Ging and Beans where Ging basically deduced how the zodiacs meeting is about to go down the next day. AND HE WAS RIGHT ABOUT ALMOST EVERY ASPECT.
That scene basically showed that being a pro (true, as Beans himself said) Hunter isn't always about strength and your Nen ability.

I think, if togashi use a long timeskip then it will be Gyro arc, both Gyro and Kite is considered as Chimera ant King(or Queen Kite). There will be a fight between them, and Kite will lose( not dead, just defeated ) and then Kite will call for Gons help ( maybe a foreshadowing when Kite and Gon talked, Kite said that if something happens then he will call for Gon's help ) so Gon trains his Nen again and there's the Gon and Gyro's epic first met.
Just my sharing this theory, and obviously I'm not merphy.

Killua and Gon's separation is even sadder and more bitter if you remember the thing Gon said to Biscuit after they beat Greed Island when she asked him what are his plans and he responded that he wanted to share with Ging the most important person in his life: "I'll Introduce Him To Killua. I'll Tell Him He's My Best Friend In The World!".
Also don't be sad or afraid about shifting to a new protagonist, Togashi does it justice so well, it's amazing.

From this point on, we have to be very patient. Sadly, Togashi's back pain has not gotten any better over the years and he draws by laying on his bed/chair. It is a blessing that he has started working on the chapters recently, but I worry that he will go on another hiatus. So, this is a good time to start on a new series, and I would personally recommened Full Metal Alchemist and the best part is that it is finished.

Ging's final little piece of wisdom about "the little detours" is basically the classic "maybe it was the friends we made along the way" or simply "the journey not the destination" and those feel like platitudes in isolation but after experiencing the whole series and hearing it from Ging himself who ngl is kind of a disappointment relative to the journey to find him, it just really hits, it feels powerful and compelling hearing that at that moment and it encapsulates a lot of the themes of the story so well. I also think this little thesis shows up in some interesting moments earlier in the series. For one it's interesting that Gon finally meets Ging not because he finally found where he was and he went there, no Gon was on a massive detour during the chimera ant arc and Ging basically just fell into his lap during the fallout of that detour. The last thing Gon actually does to try and more directly get closer to Ging is when he uses accompany on at the end of Greed Island and he winds up with Kite. The other interesting thing is looking at Ging's little trap for Gon, where if he uses accompany on to try to find Ging with friends rather than alone he wanted him to be sent to Kite. This just seems like trolling initially but I think in light of Ging's philosophy about little detours that was a test of sorts, a test to see if Gon valued the friends he'd made or if the only thing Gon cared about was finding Ging. When Gon chose to bring his friend it showed that he had valued the journey and the bonds he was able to build on that journey, so Ging basically gave him another opportunity to continue his adventure with his friends rather than cut it short.

I really loved Paristons character in this Arc. We see Ging outsmarting everyone with his protagonist vibes and genius. The good zodiacs ally together to take down Pariston, only for him to wipe the floor with them and win the election and not even care. He plays a small role in the arc but he made his appearances count. The antagonist won this time around and he only did it for the fun of it.
Enter my favorite arc of the series, The Dark Continent

    • @ajiththomas2465

Same here. Pariston was the standout of the Chairman Election Arc because he proves himself to be so threatening with wits, cunning, and manipulation that it makes you think that you don't even want to see what his Nen ability is because he's already pretty dangerous. In a lot of ways, Pariston is similar to Hisoka in that they're hedonists who derive pleasure at the suffering and misfortune of others. I really liked Aleczandxr's video essay "Pariston Hill: The Art of the Troll" because it deeply analyzed Pariston Hill and elaborated on the many facets of Pariston that made his actions in the Chairman Election Arc so damn good and how it continues the themes of the Chimera Ant Arc. Definitely check that video out if you haven't already.

    About Kite's Resurrection
This is a big issue and that's because one of the biggest problems with sci fy: People want an idealistic realism.
Hunter x Hunter has hard magic and sci fy fantasy, so, people automatically activates the "realism" filter.
Kite's resurrection has a key that people with this filter don't like, his resurrection is a random event with no specific information.
I get that people won't like it, we had a well structured concept of resurrection with the Fagogenesis of the Ants and even tho is explained in the heaven's arena arc that nen is the soul, watchers and viewers have little to none previous exposure to the concept of Soul and resurrection.
Togashi intended to explain this on one single dialogue, and it didnt go well.
But if you are interested to understand, keep reading:
The Koala and Kite's conversation is, on the surface, about the cicle of living to keep making the same mistakes of your past lifes and being unable to change that. the frustration of that and the deep guilt that the Koala feels because of the murdered redhead.
But in those lines they explained how kite reincarnated.
    1) We have the fagogenesis. What the queen eats is passed to the next genertation, ADN is the main example.
    2) The Soul exist and its smaller than a grain of sand but has more energy than a sun.
So the body is the one of the readhead, but her soul isnt there, instead is Kite's soul.
why? Because Kite died nearby and sum it the no specifics:
    3) Conditions of Kite's Crazy Slot.
    4) Nen Post Mortem
Kite's nen ability was created by Ging, not Kite. That's why Kite seems so annoyed by it. The condition of Kite's nen is: you have 9 weapons that will be invoked randomly, one of them is useless and one of them "Like hell Im gonna die" would save your life.
Nen post mortem is most powerful.
When we have all this information, we can understand how Kite is alive.
But is not clear, is messy. But for me, in my personal opinion. Life is mesy and thats a realistic factor
    -------
now if you dont like Kite's resurrection because "it hurts the story, and Gon did all that for nothing"
I understand your view but I disagree.
Togashi is the master of unsatisfyingly satisfying twists:
    1) The weird system of the tournament in the Exam arc and the fact that Killua didnt pass.
    2) The way how actual confrontation was avoided in the Zoldyck arc.
    3) The way the elite of heaven arena was so interesting at the beggining and then Killua and Gon just didnt have the interest later on because learning nen was more interesting.
    4) Special mention: the fact that all battles in HxH are one sided.
    5) A classic; when Hisoka finds out that Chrollo cant use nen anymore.
    6) The end of the York New arc when the prediction changed and just one died and confrontation was avoided.
    7) The whole "if you came her for clues, bad luck" of Ging to Gon in the Greed Island arc.
    8) The fact that Gon was sent to Kite instead of Ging just because he wanted to bring Killua.
    9) The way the story got darker in Chimera Ant Arc with no lube nor foreplay
    10) The way netere seemed to die in vain at first
    11) The way Meruem died with a love story instead of an epic battle.
    12) ok, you got the point now
so, bringing Kite back was the twist that make us realize how Gon was so inmature and the He didnt need to do all that, because yes. Gon losing his nen was in vain, but it doesnt hurt the story, it makes is better, bitter but better.

In some translations in the japanese sub of the anime they even call Nanika 'something' instead of using the actual name. It seems the family named Nanika, which makes the name kind of bitter. They looked at this 'monster' and just literally called it 'something'.

It's hard to exactly quantify Ging as a father - because clearly when Gon was young Ging's intuition said he would be like him, and as a result built Greed Island for that potential eventuality
At the same time, when Mito took steps to take legal custody from him, he didn't fight because both of them understood the intention and outcome of that situation.
Gon would grow up with a quaint life, appreciating what he had and developing as an individual knowing nothing but a nurturing and loving family - while also having both the option and the means to develop as his father's son if ever he found himself unable to not scratch that adventurous itch
It's impossible to argue with the fact that he should've been in the picture, but given his psychological makeup and temperament it's also hard to deny that he probably made the most of the situation in terms of protecting his child's self-determination and growth... especially because in hindsight his intuition was right
He's my favorite character not because I find this particularly admirable, but moreso because from a pragmatic perspective it's ironclad that the consequences of his plans and actions lead to the positive development and outcomes for others. (except pariston LOL) Most importantly and what is admirable, is that it seems he has no misconceptions about himself. He knows he's selfish, and although his resume of accomplishments is wildly vast - he remains lowkey and uses that good as a means to an end to achieve more rather than taking credit. Fascinating guy.

No Kite thoughts? You didn't touch on his resurrection at the end of the CA videos or here either. That and Mr.Koala talking about souls. There is a small Theseus Ship debate regarding Ants. Are they actually the people they remember or just new beings with those memories and the Koala just really thinks his soul was transferred from his previous self into his current self. Then what about Kite who came back in a different way?
One small touch I love in the the scene of Killua apologizing to Nanika is that we get a close-up of their Mom reacting to the interaction. Anime then has her be the one rescinding the restrictions on Killua. Not sure if the original Japanese implies a woman gives the order but why else would Togashi just highlight her reaction? I just like that this crazy woman loves both sides of her son instead of seeing his softer side as weakness.
The receptionist at the tree told Gon that the people who normally make it up do so bare-handed. Even without Nen Gon is still massively superhuman. Even Tonpa would be a world-class athlete in real life. We'll probably get Gon and Killua back. I don't know why people think their stories are over when they are only kids. Obvious progression for them is for Killua to live for himself when Alluka wants more independence and for Gon to mature into an actual Hunter and no longer be so selfish.
Chapter 357 or even earlier is probably a good stopping point for another video. New arcs chapters pretty dense so it will be interesting how you tackle the events in them especially when things actually kick off proper.

Gon and ging’s first interaction is amazing. Gon doesn’t ask where he’s been all this time or why he left. He simply cries and vents about his struggles from the chimera ant arc like a son should naturally would do if his dad was around

Hunter Hunter is one of my favorite series and I don't want to rain on your parade but I would really recommend stopping after this arc. The series as I'm sure you know has been on a 3 year hiatus and even though recently it was confirmed that it will return I highly doubt this current arc or the series in general will ever finish. Stop here and enjoy the tiny amount of closure that we were blessed with and if the series does ever return in a consistent capacity then you can always pick it up again. Cheers Murph! I'd recommend 20th Century Boys for your next manga series definitely up your alley
