Merphy has one of the most impeccable timing I've ever seen. As soon as she caught up to One Piece, we got one of the biggest moments in the series. I won't spoil it for those that haven't read OP yet, but if you know, you know. And now, as soon as she caught up to HxH, Togashi (HxH author) is coming back from his hiatus. Merphy is indeed a blessing to the anime community lmao

People may hate this arc for the amount of text, information, characters, multiple plotlines but this is why I love it. I love its complexity and makes me want to read it again and again. I dont care if people trash the full page text, i love those since i was originally a novel reader and a couple of text pages is a breeze to read. THIS is my favorite arc so I'm really excited to read the upcoming chapters!

The people that have always hated HxH are the people that came into thinking it was an action anime/manga like most shonen. If they can't come to the conclusion themselves that it is not they continue to hate it on.

I honestly don't blame them if they hate the whole text part. I personally enjoy it, but you got to understand that those fans want to read a manga which is a visual medium.
Imagine watching a movie and you get suddenly thrown into a blank screen with walls of texts for a like 10 mins. How would you feel?

just a correction, hisoka actually killed 2 members of the phantom troupe after the fight w chrollo. kortopi (the guy that can copy objects) and shalnark who i'm pretty sure was the one you already caught onto. kortopi's head was at the bottom of the page w shalnarks body so its easy to miss. also shalnark & kortopi were the two pt members that had the abilities that chrollo stole for the fight (black voice & copy) so hisoka killed them when they were practically defenseless. love the review though & this is one of my personal favorite arcs

The skill Ging is talking about was his natural talent of copying ANY punching type nen ability he had received. For example, Gon hit him with his Jajanken, then he can also use that ability like it's his. And the scary part about this is because of his genius level mastery of nen and his analytical prowess, he can improve said abilities to it's fullest form. You can just imagine how many abilities he has, this is probably how he is known as one of the top 5 nen users, well he is Kite's mentor so that's a given.

Fun fact, the chapters with Kurapika's backstory HAVE actually been adapted into the anime. Theyre included as a Flashback in the movie, The Phantom Rouge (which I still think should have been called The Phantom _Rogue_ instead, since it's about a former member of the Troupe). Mind you, the movie itself is not canon, but the flashback 100% is.

Nen is amazing because is magical (is your soul) but is a real thing with law of physics, is energy that you can transform and adapt. Transmuters are the best example for this because their powers are literally inspired in real elements, like gum/ruber or electricity. Is the perfect mix of science and fiction in a magic system

    About Hisoka and his evolution:
Interesting Facts: Togashi said that Hisoka (literally talking of Hisoka as a real self-concious being) wanted to kill Machi straight ahead, but Togashi had to intervene so Machi could inform the rest of the troupe.
He killed kortopi and shalnark, the ones that lent their powers to Chrollo. Kortopi was decapitated just like what the marionettes made with "perfect copy" tried to do with Hisoka. And Shalnark was tied in a way that make him seem like a puppet just like what his power "black voice" do with other people.
the evolution of a character we thought wouldnt need to change:
Hisoka only cares about fighting strong opponents, and he gets sexually aroused by it. No morals, no concept of age or personal priorities, just him and his prey.
This philosophy made room for scenarios where he would rather help someone than just kill them.
That was fantastic for Gon and Killua, because Hisoka helped them to survive. Gon in various occasions and killua in the presidents election arc.
That's the hisoka we know, a perv, evil, joker-like, monster that cares for the wellbeing of his opponents until the day the are ready to be killed.
But was this philosophy what got him murdered. He gave Chrollo all he needed to be invincible. He left chrollo chose the when and the where, giving him time to create the master plan we watched.
Now, Hisoka changed. Now Hisoka does not care about anything. He is just going to be a killer, doesnt care about letting the opponent to be in their prime. No second chances for anyone.
The Hisoka we know is lost, he died. And this makes perfect sense and makes him even more scarier than he already was because now that Gon is out of the picture, we don't need to Hisoka that cares about letting his prey get stronger, now we have the full assasin perverted monster that he really is in the inside.

Some of my favorite things about nen in this arc:
The way we found out how to visually recognize nen geniuses (making small forms with your ten): it is told that learning nen is extremely hard, just mastering Ten is really difficult.
Gon and Killua were prodigies with inmense talent, so they mastered the nen basics with some ease. But still it was really hard and took a lot of time for them to grow as nen users.
Bisky showed us that she could create words and numbers with his nen, something we didnt pay attention too. But nen ging showed that he could create small little forms with his nen, even move them, even move them individually in different directions.
That was a great way for stablishing what a genius can do. So, when we see Tserriednich do it, we accept that he is a genius.
The exploration of how nen abbilities are clasified: In this arc we get a lot of comments about "oh, yes, classic emitter tecnique" we got a clasification for Manipulators, a sub clasification for teletransportation abbilities and more. And this is not only interesting but makes the story more richer. Now we trully understand why you have to keep secret your nen affinity. Because experts can find out with ease what your fighting style is gonna be.
We got a bit of this in the Zeno/Silva vs Chrollo fight. Also in the discussion about if the chain user was a conjurer or a manipualtor. But is in this arc where this gets to another level.
The nen post mortem as a weapon: This is something nobody talks about, and I dont remember the title this people have. But the servants that are raised and trained to kill themselves and curse the princes with their nen are just amazing.

this is my favorite part/arc of HxH. no, I'm not lying. I know how great is chimera ant arc and York new arc, but this arc is something else. this is the arc most well thought, most well drawing, most well organized and structure that Togashi already did. you can see that he thought about every detail in this arc, every character role, the creative to create so many characters designs and no one looks like each other. is just that good. at least for me. is the one that I most like and this arc is not even close to finish yet. That lifeform is not called "Ay Eye", it's "Ai" ("eye") which is how you read the Japanese word for Love. If it wasn't for a localization in English in the previous arc, you could make the connection that it is the same word that Nanika says when she grants a wish (it's not " 'Kay ") - I'm surprised you didn't at all comment on Alluka in that chapter.🤨
"Codependence of desires" (wishes for wishes), Ai aka Love (the unconditional love that Killua has) etc., it all ties together thematically.

    About Chrollo:
The philosophy of Chrollo Lucilfer makes perfect sense when we remember where he came from. Meteor city.
Chrollo knows that he is trash, even less than trash. He had nothing and he is nothing.
Thats why he doesnt care, nor about his life nor about the people he kills.
At the same time it makes perfect sense that he isnt just another traumatized murderer. He is more of a thiever. He wants to posses things, treasures, knowledge, power. He is the king of Thieves.
We can call him a materialistic nihilistic.
Now, I dont know if he sees the troupe as family or as tools. But yes, he really cares about them. At least about the original ones. Because they are all he really has.
So, to resume, he cares about the spiders but gives a f..k about his own life.

31:32 I just find it funny how this fits so much if you read the author's comments on this chapter. One of Togashi's motivation for this fight was he wanted to make a fight where a person who says "I will win with 100%" actually does that, which was the case for Chrollo, since it's almost always the guy who brags that loses. This arc is honestly shaping up to be the best, there is so much to chew on, honestly I'm loving the Kurapica focus. That the power he chose to exact revenge is now used to protect someone so vulnerable, that no matter how strong Kurapica is you can't really help but wonder if he will make it out alive .

Togashi likes his detours. The Dark Continent is a saga. Like meeting Ging it will be a while, probably epilogue. I would get it out of your mind. Before the DC we have the New Continent where the humans have to get permission and help to make the next stretch of the journey.

Imagine if he could use all of it for himself...I bet he'd be close to Zeno (in strength but obviously Zeno has the knowledge and experience to probably win a battle between the two)

Oh I feel you in regards to coming back from the dead trope , I hate it so much. But The thing about Hisoka’s “resurrection” is that it’s masterful, it was built up, and Hisoka had death flags on him from day one with that battle obsession. I love his comeback because he wasn’t the same after it, him coming back and going on a spider hunt instead of waiting for the right moment “the fruit ripened” as he likes to say, is legitimately terrifying to me. The reason is that I don’t think he can control that blood lust anymore, making him not hold back, and makes me absolutely terrified if he finds Gon right now.

    Hey Merphy,
It is currently just my head-canon, but have you noticed that almost every Nen-User of the isolatioted country of Kakin summons a Nen-construct that they use their ability through. A spying-owl, a resurrecting-cat, a "perfect predator". Those that use "traditional" ways of Nen are social outcasts like the mafia or those "untouchable"-cast that turse one person in their lifetime.
To me, it looks like the culture of Kakin is heavily influenced by the myth of the seed-urn ceremony, which in turn shaped how many people utilize their Nen.

You know, when you think about it, it’s not really a “fakeout” death because Hisoka *actually* died - and on the other hand, it’s only really a “resurrection” in the same way that CPR is a resurrection. And it only worked because bungee gum has the properties of both rubber and gum, so it’s not like this sets a precedent that other characters can follow and thus actually diminish the threat of death overall.
It does beg the question of whether Hisoka can basically make himself immortal now.

Shalnark’s FORTUNE - “You must not phone, because at the most important time, it won’t work. You won’t be able to answer the phone either, because one time out of three, on the other end will be the god of death.”
So we know that the “god of death” is Hisoka which also makes more sense as he is number 4 (a number familiar with death in cultures)
“It won’t work ” as Chrollo had his ability borrowed shalnark could not rely on his ability Black Voice.
“You won’t be able to answer either” Shalnark gets a second call but never answers it due to him blitzing to Kortopi.
“Time of three” 1st call from Chrollo, 2nd unknown call and 3rd call (by person) by Hisoka “on the end will be the god of death”
    Daymn Togashi…
The most important detail about this is that it implies that the fortunes still applies.
    So don’t forget Chrollo’s fortune.
“Travel west, there you will find the person you are looking for”
“West” is very important in the arc currently as “Journey in to the new world” has 2 books: East and West. And West has not been found or rather being written as we speak.
The heavy implying of Chrollo could be a new main protagonist is strong with this one.

What I love the most about Hisoka coming back is that it puts a nice, realistic spin on the trope of character that loves to fight and be challenged. You can claim you like challenging fights as much as you want, the fact of the matter is that, if every fight is to the death, you won every fight. No matter how tough and challenging some of them were you always came out on top.
So Hisoka having a, frankly, pretty childish reaction to losing and going "I'll just kill all of you." even the ones that wouldn't give him the challenging, thrilling fight he loves so much, is a realistic way of framing a fight loving character losing for perhaps the first time in their life.

Yes the succession war arc has become incredibly complex and ambitious. But knowing that this is most likely the end of the character arc for Kurapika, Togashi will not disappoint.
The following are not spoilers but just some guesses on where I think the story may go.
It’s looking like Otoi could potentially become a romantic interest for Kurapika. There were hints where her relatively simplistic approach to life and humanity have Kurapika casting a sliver of doubt on his current self destructive road of vengeance. Woble(14th prince)’s nen beast which is the only one that hasn’t shown itself could be the one that save Kurapika at some point later on, maybe during a showdown with the 4th prince.
This arc is also probably the end of the journey for the chlollo and the phantom troupe. They’ll have to cross path with kurapika at some point but I imagine hisoka would be the one finishing them off.
It’s also heavily foreshadowing that the whole ship would descend into chaos as the succession war heats up which could potentially halt the journey. And that’s probably when Beyond Netero steps in if his primary goal of reaching dark continent is in jeopardy. Gonna be so excited what he can do.
Man there are just so many intriguing pieces that Togashi has introduced, and knowing him I’ll probably be wrong on all my guesses lol but it’s fun to think about nonetheless. No other show can get my analytic spirit and imagination boiling like h x h.

Nen after death was actually first mentioned and explained back by the end of YorkNew where the troupe explained why they can't go after Kurapika and said that if they kill him, his nen on Chrollo probably wouldn't go away and could even get stronger. And then a live example was Pitou.

As someone whose been reading HxH since I was a kid I love the expansion of this world and the journey into the unknown but I think its important to be honest and realistic with the direction and status of the manga. HxH will probably never be completed and the fact that an arc so ambitious and expansive started only to go on hiatus for 3 years is very indicative of the trajectory of the series. Togashi is amazing but he's been plagued with health problems for years and though they have announced new chapters are coming I don't see any feasible way that we get answers or sagas like we used to. So glad you're enjoying HxH but I would recommend at least warning new readers or even older readers who aren't as familiar with the long breaks and tumultuous history of HxH, that this fantastic series may never be complete and potentially could just end at any moment. Cheers! :)

In regards to Hisoka's resurrection.... I think the thing that keeps me from brushing this of as a simple character revive (aside from the set up), is the 2 main unknown factors associated with this.
Factor 1: We do not know if this resurrection is permanent, in fact, realistically we have no reason to believe it is. The limitations to this are completely unknown.
Factor 2: Hisoka's seeming change in personality. Before, Hisoka was always set on his goal of pushing himself further in fights, because it err... turned him on. The fact he is no longer caring about pushing himself in a fight, and is solely focused on death, seems to be a massive change in his character. I genuinely wonder if the announcer foreshadowed Hisoka's eventual change in character when introducing him as the Heavens Arena 'Reaper'.
At the very least, we are left with an unpredictable character, acting even more unpredictable then usual, with a bunch of mystery surrounding the nature of his current existence, and its relation to Nen. If were going to have a character resurrection of some sort.... im glad it's being done by Togashi within the Nen system. We are guaranteed to have drawbacks / unknown synergies to come in regards to how all of this works.

Hisoka’s revival definitely made him permanently stronger. He couldn’t make limbs beforehand with bungee gum or he would’ve in his attempt to defeat Chrollo. With this greater aura capacity he can now do so and it seems to have given him some speed going by the panel of his foot when killing Shalnark.
Chrollo during the fight said he saw little difference between human, puppets, and corpses. But Hisoka kills 2 of his members, breaking off the head of one like Chrollo’s puppets and stringing Shalnark like one. Going by Chrollo’s reaction there is in fact a difference to him even if he isn’t aware of the contradictions in himself. He’s also taking this hard because he feels responsible but that goes against his fatalistic attitude (like going East at the end of Yorknew despite the fortune already proven wrong with him not losing half the Spider), if events were predetermined he couldn’t be held responsible. Hisoka is also someone who believes he controls his fate see his fight against Kastro where he foresees him dancing to death and when he tells Pakunoda “each steps amends our fate.” But now Hisoka is disregarding his old way of fighting in practicing patience for his opponent’s ideal circumstances and no longer deciding when he will take out the spider but doing so on sight.

By the end of Yorknew 2 thieves, Pakunoda and Uvogin, died and Chrollo (obvious allusions to Christ like leader of 12 and teaches certain rules and even selflessness/self-sacrifice/collectivism to the Spider) had his identity taken (can’t use his nen nor be with the Spider); with his exorcism it’s a sort of rebirth or revival of the Spider’s leader. At the beginning of Succession War, 2 thieves die, Kortopi and Shalnark, and Hisoka dies and is reborn (Jesus was also mocked by the moniker “Jesus the magician,” i.e., being called a fraud/trickster).
