I like to imagine that Shanks being found in a treasure chest is just how they treat all Celestial Dragon babies. Just letting them sleep on gold and jewels because they need to get used to that wealth or something.

I actually really like the idea of God Valley just being erased from the maps but still physically existing because, to me, it gives a deeper importance to Nami’s dream of drawing a map of the world. She isn’t influenced by the world government so her map could possible end up being the only accurate map of the world to exist once she finishes it

There could theoretically be hundreds of islands like God Valley, just completely erased from maps for one reason or another but still there physically. It makes me wonder what other stuff the people in the world of One Piece have just never seen or heard of because the WG does such a good job of hiding it.

That's one of my favorite parts of Marineford is when Ivankov screams "Wait...we have to fight Vice Admiral Garp?! We're dead!"
yknow Tekking, you mentioned the possibility of st. Garling winning the God Valley contest, but when we were introduced to him he was called the CHAMPION of God Valley - so I don't think it was a possibility, I think he definetly won.

My idea for why Shanks was in the chest - Garland put up his child as part of the bet (like a gamble - "I bet I can beat all of you! I'm so confident in fact, that I'll put up my own son as the prize for 1st place!")
The Celestial Dragons take baby shanks, put him in the 1st place chest, but then the Rocks incident happened and, in the commotion, Roger got the 1st place chest without realizing there was the bay inside.
Garland, for his part I imagine, was pissed but ultimately shrugged it off with the mindset of "I can make more".

I was wondering how many times Oda has introduced us to the word “incident” which had major consequences and involved the D. clan, and this ordered list is what I got:
1. God Valley incident (38 years ago): Garp & Roger vs. Rocks --> Dissolution of Rocks’ crew.
2. Ohara incident (22 years ago): Saul saves Robin --> Robin becomes a major target of the WG.
3. Enies Lobby incident (2 years ago): Luffy and his crew declare war on the WG and save Robin --> 1st major defeat for the WG since its birth.
4. Banaro Island duel/incident (2 years ago): Blackbeard defeats Ace --> Paramount War.
5. Celestial Dragon’s incident (Sabaody Archipelago, 2 years ago): Luffy punches St. Charlos and there’s Law as well --> Straw Hats are separated.
6. Rocky Port incident (less than 2 years ago) --> Law becomes a Shichibukai and Blackbeard settles in Hachinosu.
7. Alabasta incident (Mary Geoise - Reverie, few weeks ago): Cobra’s death --> Vivi’s a fugitive as she’s become one of the major targets of the WG.
8. Egghead’s incident (current): Luffy and his crew involved --> Which is the aftermath that will shock the world?
9. Great incident of unprecedented proportions (near future?): Luffy, his crew and Straw Hats’ fleet are involved --> What are the consequences going to be?

Was the attack of Blackbeard Pirates on Baltigo (HQ of Revolutionary Army) also called an incident? If anything it also shocked the world. The WG sent the Navy and CP to the island but it was already razed. They did clash with the BB pirates before the BB Pirates fled.

Once you know that the "Ancient Kingdom "is based on the Hispanic Empire and the Tenryuubito are based on the Anglo-Saxons, everything else makes sense. One example is the "D." (before the first name), which is based on the D. some Hispanics use before their first name to this day.
Let's not forget that racism was created by the Anglo-protestants in 1614, and that protestantism was created SOLELY to attack the Hispanic people after Carlos V became the rightful Emperor of the Germanic people.

You know I think I can see the reason why Rocks went there after all, the captain's ambition was to rule the world and the world nobles are essentially the leaders of the world if he could take them all at once it might have given him a path to that not to mention the world nobles barely ever leave the comfort above the red line so it might have been a golden opportunity to strike.
I think doflamingo's father homing was at god valley and when he was there something happened that motivated him to step down and live amongst the humans. Doffy was 3 years old during god valley and homing descended to become a human 5 years later.

Rocks is most likely still a bastard make no mistake. He was probably only there to ransack the place or recruit slaves there, maybe even by force.

The only thing we know about God Valley is what we heard from Sengoku, who said that Garp teamed up with Roger at God Valley to protect the Celestial Dragons, and more importantly, their slaves.
If Rocks rolled up wanting to kill all of them, they could both be evil.

So about the naming scheme. After some quick research, the real surname "Garling" might be derived from an old German word for spear; the name "Garland" (as in Figarland) derives from the French "land of the spear". So "Shanks" would fit this naming scheme as the verb "to stab."
imagine if we in this flashback see Big News Morgans in his human form as a budding reporter reporting the sports news on the tournament
Someone mentioned the treasure chests for the prizes to the contest could hold devil fruits. It would make sense that Yonko could get their hands on Devil Fruits, but it also makes sense that Rocks would get them from God Valley here.
Fleet Admiral Sakazuki (17 years old) and Monkey D. Dragon (17 years old) were rookie marines at GOD VALLEY flashback
Sakazuki joined the marines at 23, 6 years after God Valley
I think the motives for all the parties will be what decides good and evil

Rocks: He wanted to free the slaves, but not out of good but to achieve his goal.
Rodger: didn't want to get involved with the celestial dragons, but had no choice
Garp: teams up with Rodger to stop rocks
Dragon: he truly cared for the slaves, and lets them join him. Etc

Do you think that Crocodile was a slave on God Valley? This would be his big secret and also how Ivanovo knows it. It also adds some context to why he wanted to become the pirate king. He saw Gol D Roger fight at God Valley.

Would be interesting if this was when the Donquixote family decided to leave the celestial dragons unless the timeline is a bit off.

No the timeline actually fits really well and anyone with even a slight moral compass would realize what the celestial dragons were doing was fucked up so I do think we will see that this is when the Donquixote family became disillusioned with being a part of the Celestial Dragons.

My theory is that, the reason Rocks was there is to free the pirates there so they can be a part of his crew
He was there to collect the DF prices and grow in power
@georgez2702 there was no DF though, only slaves of pirates and i think the reason roger fight against him was when he started killing the civilians, he had to stop him, if he was only killing the celestial dragons, i don't think Roger would have stop him

Rocks may have not expected as much resistance as he ended up getting. It may have been a "resource raid" where he was there for the prizes, kill some of the CDs along the way, and free some of the slaves to join his crew. He may have not expected Roger to be there, nor as many of the Marines.
Doubt it. It's more likely he went to God Valley because he was aware of the event that the Celestial Dragons were doing & saw it as an opportunity to wipe them out. It is confirmed Rocks use to target the WG specifically.

One thing that's been bugging be about Roger's involvement in the God Valley incident, is that he supposedly reached Lodestar/Roadstar Island, the last island on the Grand Line, that same year. It makes me wonder which he reached first, but in a way, we can surmise from the likeliness. Unless they 1) had a reason and 2) could pass the Calm Belts to reach God Valley and then return to the Grand Line to finish their journey, they would've had to have reached Lodestar (possibly finding the All Blue where all Seas converge?) which allowed them to make their way to the West Blue (where we first hear rumor of the legend pop up btw).
No one else seems to be trying to make sense of these two events, and I don't have a comprehensive enough understanding of events or lore to figure to out. I'd love to hear what others think!

But how about this explanation... A year takes some time... I dont know the exact number of days in the One Piece world but it is certainly more than 100 days... So lets say Roger reached the last Island at the beginning of that year and realised he had to gather all 4 Road Porneglyphs and he happend to start his search in the West Blue...

Tekking if you ever read this I just want to let you know that you have an amazing skill in storytelling/speaking. You are able to expand on topics that I could probably only talk extensively for a few minutes and you are always able to do like 30-60 minutes of pure talking. If I only had 10% of your ability I would be happy with that. Keep it up man.
What keeps me up at night is the fact that the Moon tribes came down to Vearth and used the term "god" a lot with Enel even calling himself a god at some point but the celestial dragons never bothered to annihilate them for using the term "God", also calling themselves celestial dragons makes it seem as if they came from outer space, maybe the moon even. Also Roger visited the sky island and its existence was a known legend, maybe not the fact that there was a poneglyph up there but if it was known then all the more reason for the celestial dragons to want to destroy it unless they have some connection the the moon tribes and don't bother them to maybe keep a secret.
And also this, Kalgara was called Shandora's Demon and Enel was called God Enel, demon and god fought and the demon lost but his will was carried into the future by his descendants and one day a man carrying the Will of D appeared and defeated God.

Never understood the whole Roger and Garp protecting the World Nobles narrative, I’m sure Oda will explain it soon, because Roger and Garp wouldn’t have given a shit (Garp still doesn’t) about the Celestial Dragons. They might have tried to save the citizens of God Valley and the Slaves (not because they supported slavery).

I do In fact live in Utah Mr. Tekking, and I think you are right. The valley of the gods does have a lot of shapes similar to God Valley, and that may have been the inspiration it is also quite a beautiful place to visit and see.
My theory is Shanks mother is not a celestial dragon but from GV that is why his vivre card says he was born in the west blue. CDs are known to have many wives like the one from sabaody.
I believe Dragon was a young marine and he helped free Kuma, Ivankov, Jinny. The celestial dragons were going to kill Dragon for being a traitor and Garp offered himself to save Dragon. Someway somehow Garp promised to take on Rocks to save Dragon. Roger being a friend to Garp same way Koby is to Luffy fought along side Garp in order to save Garps son Dragon.
I appreciate that tekking can embody the excitement that i am too introverted to express

Crackpot theory, Brook is from God Valley. I have no evidence other than Brook says that he’s from “a certain country in west blue” with certain being a word Oda typically uses to describe an important thing he doesn’t want to say the name of yet. For example in fishman island Jinbe said that Aokiji and Akainu had a duel on a certain island in the new world. I feel like Brook’s homeland will come into play at some point and the only other island I could see him being from is Toroa.

I don't live there, but i have been to Monument Valley. That was what you kept showing images of. It was also a popular place to film westerns back in the day. A lot of John Ford and Marion Morrison films were shot there.

You know, 20 years ago was when Bell-mere found Nami and Nojiko on an island which had been devistated "by a war". She immeditately quit the Marines right after as well. It fits with the every 3 year timeline. Could Bell-mere have seen the Hunt? Could Nami actually be a Celestial Dragon?
I live in Montana but I worked for some time in Zion National Park at the lodge restaurant. On the way back up home I got to see those rock formations. They really are awesome

Some interesting thoughts, some of which I agree with. I actually just put the finishing touches on a God Valley theory of my own that includes a lot of ideas I haven't heard anyone else suggest yet. It's too involved to post in a comment here, but I will be sharing it before the next chapter drops.

Its incidents like these than make you question yourself and ideologies before picking a side. (Same for wars)
Why would Roger side with Garp and protect the Celestial Dragons?
I like to believe that he had some other grander benefit for helping them, otherwise someone could say Rocks were doing everyone a favour by killing Celestial Dragons and destroying the WG.
And the only reason i see to rationalize Roger's decision is being the fact that the Rocks crew was so strong (indeed they were) that they could rule the world and exert their will quite easily. (Think about it, prime Big Mom, prime Kaido, prime Whitebeard , prime Qebec and who knows how many more strong pirates grouped under the same banner as the strongest.
I can imagine only the WG had a decent chance to stop them from world domination. Yet even they needed some help to put it out thus Roger steped in.
But here is the deal...
Do you preffer a world where it is ruled by the mightest to dictate everything?
Or a world ruled by deceptive rulers that are fully corrupted?
Roger chose the latter.
Dictatorship or Oligarchy?
Its literally a one to one parallel to our real world geopolitics really.
Where we all believe and have the facade that we have a say for politics but the elites are the ones who pull the real strings, or in contrast a strong leader that is ruling with a strong regime of his own.
Pick your poison.
There is no "right" or "wrong" but a contest of might and will, because in either case you will require the ability to exert and enforce your will into others who are unwilling to submit to you and your ideas. Thus power is key unfortunately, you can not always talk your way out of every situation.
This is unfortunately the way the world is working. Just charisma can not contain everyone from their own ways that may be bad.
Look at Luffy he is supposedly turning everyone into an ally but it is not really possible...even in fictional standards. Kaido, Big Mom, Jones, Lucci and others will never align themselves with him unless they have a mutual benefit.
We can not like everyone and in contrast we can not be liked by everyone. Unfortunately we can not all together unanimously agree into one thing or at least not yet.
Things like these that are bringing ideas that can be applicable to our own world or legit parallels is what makes One Piece the best anime in my opinion.
The relatability and the "realism" that it presents by reffering to real life issues and generally aspects of our lives. Like religion, politics, society, traditions , morals, physics, geography, history, technology, evolution , race , injustice and the unique fictional metaphysics that compliment them in the story is peak.
One Piece worldbuilding is the best.
At this point i only hope for its ending NOT to be a cliche Utopian world were everyone and everything is fixed , happy and complete. Because this is way to goofy, ironic and bs imo of an outcome after all the dark concepts and stories that lead up to it.
I want a semi happy ending, where not everyone is content but everyone got what they deserve, with no exaggerations.
In the end we all have our own strengths and flaws, we should try to get the best out of ourselves and co-exist, work together and explore this vast universe that surrounds us. Free from our own selfish and evil nature that leads us to God complexes and then to wars among ourselves for whatever reason, just to dominate our own species.

I have a feeling oda’s deceiving us into thinking garling is shanks’s dad. I think it’s more logical that his parents were people native to the island. In order to protect him from being slaughtered in the tournament, they might’ve hidden him in a treasure chest.

For A Song of Ice and Fire fans, God Valley is basically the Tourney at Harrenhal, but it was a war.
slight correction to your timeline, I believe Brook died fifty years before the pre timeskip era, so if your timeline is based on the post timeskip era, Brook actually died 52 years ago
Something that’s interesting is that back in the day there was no good reason for rocks to be in the grand line. since he didn’t know that the one piece was there piracy was just equally lucrative everywhere. And then when roger revealed the big location of the one piece that when the grand line became the big important location.
Since shanks got sake from his hometown and it was said godvalley got wiped off (might be imu) but maybe it got pushed away by a previous user of the nikyu nikyu no mi and died allowing kuma to eat it (it might be the island he lived on between between birth and when he joined the roger pirates, cause they might have dropped him off somewhere and visited it like how shanks visited luffy)
Or Shiki turned it into a Sky Island

Yes, he could have done that. I still believe he will come back. I think he did what he did in the movie in the series and hid away and built his armada. Since kaido, oden and some more knew that in 20 years joyboy will make a comeback, I think a few others knew too. Maybe shiki and rocks are hiding away together. I would like to speculate that rocks somehow found a way to make him immortal too before his disappearance and waited for joyboy to come
