Hi guys, hope everybody is healthy and safe - just a quick message to say that this was filmed many months before our current difficult situation... I normally work 10 also videos in hand - that being said I really hope this is useful for some of you and if you know anybody learning the guitar right now maybe pass it on :-)
Good idea! People have a lot of time to practice now... BTW, I posted a video on the equipment from the Monkeylord comp. Thanks again and I hope you and your family are well...
It’s come at a perfect time for me. As last held a guitar 40 years ago. 6o now and these videos are just what I need. I grew up listening to Hendrix, Led Zep, Stones, Doors, Cream and the like. Still my favourite artists (with lot of other stuff in between..........Nirvana , Ben Howard, Alt J and many others). Thank you for you guidance. I’m liking the relaxed but informative style that you present with.
I've been playing for 8 years and I'm here just because I love your videos. Brings me back to the old days when y'all literally helped choose my guitars doing the reviews.
Lol, I started collecting guitars (and ukuleles) years ago, long before I even started trying to learn how to play one (last month). I have WAY more than just 1 guitars/ukuleles and amps! 😜
Max2k - I’ve got over 20 guitars, most of which are American made from brands you’d know and appreciate, but I pretty much suck at guitar. Then again, I’m comparing myself to Hendrix, but next to him I suck.
I’ve been playing guitar for about 6 and a half years, and literally just last night I helped my girlfriend pick out her first guitar and amp, and she ordered them this morning! It’s like you made this video just for her haha. I’ll make sure she watches this when it all arrives. Thanks Rob, this is perfect timing! I guess it’s meant to be! :- )
I have been learning electric guitar for almost a year. I was inspired by David Gilmour’s Floyd concerts on You Tube to, at 35 years old to learn how to play such beautiful music. Thank you for your entertainment and tutelage, Chappers. I am a waiter at a restaurant in the States, and due to this pandemic I am temporarily unemployed. I love to see who reaches out in trying times like these, and puts out great informative, practical lessons and advice. Thank you, Sir Rob Chapman.
A great start for new players, I agree with Rob regarding a good tutor, i tried the online courses and could not get very far, now i have a tutor to show me where i was going wrong.
Thanks for the tip about the shoulder, didn't realize I was doing that until ye pointed that out (although in my case, it's BOTH shoulders, not just the left). No wonder trying to "play" the guitar was such a pain in the neck for me, literally! ...And shoulders, back and head, LOL! And the pointers on the fretting pressure for the left hand helped big time, relieved pain in the fingers and hand!
I'll be very rich when I die (hopefully that's a long way from now, considering the current circumstances ...coro, not sick but worried) Does 70 guitars/ukulele qualifies? ...Oh, and 12 amps.

Nice job, Rob! I've been playing for years, but I like to return to beginner lessons occasionally to get out of a rut. Sometimes I might catch a tip or two that I've never considered, or glossed over when I was learning things the first time. For example, I learned from this video to ease up on pressing down the strings. I started learning on a badly out of spec acoustic that required a monkey grip to get any notes out of, and I developed a habit of holding all guitars like that. Maybe a lighter touch will help me get my speed up a little more.
I like the 'New' Chappers, so much more like the 'Old' Chappers. Friendly, quiet and helpful! I think we should give the bloke a break and forget that strange outburst of ego last year. Good to have you back mate.
Cheers for this Rob, my guitar arrives tomorrow and I'm absolutely buzzing I get all of lockdown to jam away (to the best of my abilities...) As a beginner, how long do you reckon I should spend a day practicing? Seeing as I've got so much free time on my hands haha
Rob really good for the beginners the only thing missing and I'm being over critical, was the G string joke 😁 seen many of your stream's awesome player 👍
Nice opening, like the Mr. Rogers of guitar tuition. I would like to see a video on how to get the guitar sound used on current synthwave tracks, like artist like LeBrock use. I would also like to see an affordable Ghost Fret in a wild red or neon color. I would also like... for you to have a great day :D

Hi Rob ! Is it possible for me to propose French subtitles? When I try it seems like I can't... I'd like your video to be spread in French ! It may help loads of begginers :-)
#timbebert32 If you watch the video on a PC (or even on a Chromebook), and check in settings (the 3 vertical dots in the right corner of the video) you'll find an option to manually add subtitles. You WON'T see this option on a mobile device such as cell phones and tablets running Android or iOS).
Lance K Shimabukuro I watch this on a PC... I tried what you said before and it says that the video I’m asking for is not compatible with community contributions... So it seems like I’m not allowed to add French subtitles manually :’(
Brian Onuscheck Seriously? Is it even funny? I just wanted this video to be available for French speaking begginers, no big deal right? If only one person can provide subtitles to give access to thousands of young students, it would be much more easier for everyone, right? Anyway, good for you if you can speak English but the problem I wanted Rob to notice is apparently not concerning you. Please let the people who this topic can help do their job. Have a nice day.

I bought a Fender Stratocaster in 1986, and thought now was a good time to learn to play it. Over the last 34 years, it seems the strings have gone rusty. Is that normal? Should I replace them?
Just in case you aren't trolling: strings should be replaced every 3-6 months depending on use. Generally every 100 hours of playing you want to change strings. I usually go longer than this though.
@@ReasonableRam Every 3 months!? That would have been like 144 sets over the years, say £7 a go - that's a thousand quid I've saved - maybe i can buy an amplificator now!

Some more tips from a guitar player: * DO NOT buy a Floyd Rose or similar system as your first guitar. It makes tuning a lot more difficult and it won't allow you to just simply tune down to D (or any other tuning). It will require you to re-tune the entire guitar just to change the tuning of one string. * Balance is important in a guitar. I recommend you do your research online and try it out in a store. Having a guitar that is well balanced for you makes a huge difference in playing comfort. * DO NOT buy a Floyd Rose or similar system as your first guitar. It makes tuning a lot more difficult and it won't allow you to just simply tune down to D (or any other tuning). It will require you to re-tune the entire guitar just to change the tuning of one string. * Plectrums come in all shapes and sizes and are made from a wide variety of materials. I highly recommend trying a few different picks and see what works for you and the music your playing. * If your playing electric your choice of amplifier and cabinet (the speakers) make a huge difference. I recommend you spend your budget about 30 / 70 spending the majority on the speakers. The cab is the foundation of your sound and if its bad no matter how much you spend on an amp its not going to sound great. * Solid state electronics have come a very long way and there is a lot of stuff out there that is really good and not that expensive. It's a bit of a minefield though so do your research before buying anything.
Check the electric guitar's fretboard, some are pretty flat, BUT if the kid wanna shred, you'll wanna flatter one anyway. Try for a compound one thats flatter higher on the board for shredding and rounder lower for chords.
I'm a bit in a hurry so how many more of these until I play like Eddie Van Halen? P.S. Do I need a monkey? Because I wasn't told that I needed a monkey.
