I'm live in Hawaii and my mom makes the best! Instead of frying your spam, try cooking the spam in a little bit of water some shoyu (soy sauce. Yamasa shoyu is the best) with a little bit of minced garlic sugar and sesame oil. Fill a pot with you spam and then add in your shoyu until it completely covers all the slices. Then add in a little bit of minced garlic. Bring to a boil until your spam is cooked. Using the same method as you did, pack the rice tightly as so. Then, before adding the layer of spam, put furikake on top of the rice. Then later the spam. Wrap in nori sheet and use water to seal the end of the sheet to prevent it from falling apart. Let me know if you give it a try :) sorry I don't have exact measurements... my mom just eyeballs everything
Oh, I like this idea! I'm trying it right now. I'll thank you in advance because it's obviously going to be AMAZING. Your seven-year-old comment improved our dinner.
I know people that cook types of breads in cans like those or in larger round tins. You could use it to mould a loaf of beard as you cook it to be the perfect size when sliced to fit either side if the cooked spam.
I made these once and had some people at work try them. I just left them wrapped in plastic wrap to transport to work, and carried the seaweed separately so it didn't get too soggy. The work people loved them.
I live in Hawaii, and my kids and I literally have spam musubi once every 1-2 weeks because we always end up craving it. The best ones (which I also make at home) have the teri sauce, furikake, and egg. So good!
I used to work with a woman from Hawaii. She brought some of these in, and they were amazing! I was thinking about them this afternoon, and now this is in my recommended. I think it’s a sign to make some lol.
Mmm..not ashamed to admit that I LOVE Spam! Spam musubi is one of my guilty pleasures! Spam is great for breakfast too. Slice it very thinly and fry. Eat with fried egg and rice! That's what I call a breakfast of champions! Mmm..yum! Luv ur vids Emmy!
This reminds me of something I would have at a friend's house growing up, which they happily called "Spammish Rice" - think it involved rice, chopped Spam, onion and garlic, soy sauce, and egg. It was honestly quite good 😊
+Jessica Marijke - you guys are awesome then, because if I remember correctly, that stuff was amazing! For some reason I feel like slices of grilled pineapple would be REALLY good with this...
I made this recipe tonight. I tweeked it by using "50% less sodium soy sauce" wich helped with saltiness. I also let it caramelize until it was pretty dark but not yet burnt. The mold is amazing. I tried it by hand and realized the mold is meant to be, lol
Was in the process of making this from another recipe but found your video to see if there were some shortcuts that others had not mentioned. The plastic wrap in the can is a great tip. Another recipe recommended slicing the Spam into thinner pieces if you are using the regular Spam (rather than the low-sodium kind). From my experience the low-sodium Spam is the way to go. But my kids love this and they are having it tonight along with some homemade baked salmon & avocado roles. Thanks E.
Emmy, you are the purest human ever. I appreciate "the everything-ness" about the way you present concepts in your videos. Thank you for being you and sharing your charm. It really does brighten the day to experience your content. Cheers!
Emmy, maybe you should try soaking the (sliced) spam in mirin, sake or water to leech out excess salt (probably like 10 minutes should work). Pat dry and then fry.
When my dad was a kid, he had peanut butter and jelly sandwiches made with White Wonder Bread (the only kind available in stores at the time; this was the 50's). My mom, on the other hand, had the Hawaiian equivalent: Spam or Portuguese sausage musubi with rice and mac salad wrapped up in a Bento box. Me and my brother were, of course, raised with both. The only difference was that my dad didn't use Wonder Bread. Musubi is one of the dishes that, along with malasadas, I always get whenever possible when I go to Hawaii, and I don't think I'll ever grow too tired of it.
I added a thin layer of Kewpie mayo between the spam and rice, it elevated the dish so much. Added a nice creaminess. I also doubled up the sheet of nori because one sheet would fall apart so easily.
For anyone else struggling with the super-salt of Spam, I'd suggest boiling it in water before preparing it, because it tones down the saltiness of the Spam, especially with Lite or Reduced Sodium.
I just made this for myself a little while ago and my husband wanted to try(much to my surprise) and now he asks me to make it all the time, it's his favorite snack and my favorite lunch treat
Our family adds lightly stir fried kimchi to make kimchi spam musubi. cook sliced kimchi in a frying pan with about a tablespoon of sugar and teaspoon of sesame oil until kimchi turns from a white ish color to a tan ish color. cook spam in soy sauce and sugar mixture in a pan until spam is cooked well done. assemble with bottom part being rice, then spam, then layer of kimchi, then on more layer of rice (using a musubi mold is easiest) then wrap in nori (if you take a square of nori and cut it in half, it usually ends up being the same size as the musubi. Sweet, savory, and lightly kimchi sour musubi.
I know you made your video a couple years ago I don't know if someone's already suggested but using spam low sodium actually is amazing and also another trick is try wrapping up the spam with Saran wrap and let it sit for about 10 to 20 minutes it helps the nori become a little bit softer and easier to eat!
My grandma used to always make musubi for my grandpa and us. She would either use the plain or spicy spam and I don't recall her putting the sauce, but I know they usually do in Hawaii. Now that they have all kinds of flavors, I just use the Teriyaki spam to skip the sauce step, it's sooo good and I'm passing the recipe on to my boyfriend because he adores Spam musubi now, too! People can assume spam is gross all they want, more musubi for us >:)
I love SPAM musubi! I discovered it when I was in Hawaii! We have 50% less sodium SPAM in Australia... its the only one i can eat because the salt is so intense for the other varieties!
Your recipe was the easiest to follow ... & I thank you for that !!! I made it yesterday for the first time & it was soooo bomb!!! Thank you Emmy!!! Keep the recipes coming .
Great video! I just made some this morning. In addition to the seasoned glazed SPAM I add a layer of scrambled egg and drizzle on a coat of combined mayo/oyster sauce. I've made it before with Thai hot chili sauce too and that adds a heck of a kick! I cook a fluffy scrambled egg in a square frying pan and use the SPAM can to cut out the just-right size and shape of eggs. I bought a musubi press mold at Amazon for 7 bucks and it works like a charm! Thanks for your video and your pleasant and enthusiastic presentation :)
We get misubi from our local poke place we go to. Its so good. We are making our own on Wednesday. We will use your recipe. Thanks. I know this is an older video but you can't go wrong with spam rice sauce and nori.
so happy to see you trying out musubi! i love musubi! and you should totally try a musubi lei, just like a candy lei but its filled with musubi instead, its great for graduations and other things like that. love this video.
You can fry Spam in coconut oil. It actually cuts away the saltiness somewhat. In the south we put this with grits. Or we put a sunny side up on top and eat it on toast. Or cut it in chunks and fry it then mix it with scrambled eggs while they cook.

Oh my…. Childhood memories for sure. My Japanese mother “Masako” made this for us quite a lot. All you we missing was a little dish of “Okoko” (pickled cabbage) to complete the meal! 😃
Tried it for lunch today and it was delicious! Even tho I grabbed Thema wrong mirin and rice, the salty spam (baked mine) really made it for me. Thanks for sharing this recipe!
I just made these! I used low sodium soy sauce and spam. I don’t like overly salty foods so that helped quite a bit. I really like this recipe. Thank you for sharing!
I tried this today and it was good! I sliced the spam thinner and put more rice since you said it was salty. Definitely gonna make this more often. Back in the Philippines, this was my go-to "meal" when I was in school and late for class, which was usually the case lol. I remember they had variations with it, like putting egg (of course also molded to the shape of the spam) in the middle, or double spam with egg. Lol. So glad I came up with this easy recipe. Thank you!
Us here in Hawaii is loving this video! It great in fried rice, fried noodles and soupy noodles dishes as well. It's also a great in corn chowder and baked beans!

My city has an Asian market and I love chocolate mochi ice cream but my mom never takes me😭 I have always wanted to try green tea ice cream and red bean ice cream it's seems popular I think
anteikuwaiter Trader Joe's has a delicious green tea mochi. I always keep it in my freezer for myself and my friend, who always raids the freezer for them when he visits, lol. Probably not authentic but they have a delicious coffee one with a mocha core that is SO GOOD. Highly recommend both. 👍
My mother made these often as a kid. My mother is Japanese and grew up on Hawaii and I are up in Seattle so she would make these yummy spam snacks odten
Sticky rice. If you dont have a rice cooker, dont use minute rice. You can get bowl of sticky rice in the asian sections of almost any grocery store. You literally put it in the microwave for 90 seconds and it's amazing. Been popular in hawaii and korea for years. The best brands will say "korean sticky rice"

Will try this! Going to make some Spam musubi this weekend. Looking for an easy quick eat for lunch and it sounds great! Thanks for sharing!

So glad you enjoyed the spam musubi. One of our favorites!
Btw I watched your musubi video featuring Shinichi's mama and loved it -- she's awesome. :)
I wonder if it would be better with the low sodium spam? It might tame some of the heavy saltiness.
love your chan!
DO WE NEED MIRIN?
can we do it without it?
TabiEats Hey guys, I love your channel & subscribed. And I YES,deep fried with panko....

They store just fine together. The seaweed doesn't become soggy even over a few days.
yess this is like Hawaii's most famous thing so glad you tried it!!! aloha from Hawaii
I live in Hawaii, and my kids and I literally have spam musubi once every 1-2 weeks because we always end up craving it.

you are the coolest and the bestest parent i bet
Same here and spam eggs and rice plates like from mcdonalds
How is the egg cooked? Is it a thin omelette cut to shape?

Is it just me or is Emmy really glowing in this video
Yes! She actually seems to get glowier or healthier looking every year. Comparing this vid to say one from 2011 is almost like night and day. Amazing
she glows in every video.
is this a beauty channel? NO

Is this RUclips? YES
In fact, she has a very beautifull glow due to oils in her skin. It is perfectly normal however.

Emmy, maybe you should try soaking the (sliced) spam in mirin, sake or water to leech out excess salt (probably like 10 minutes should work). Pat dry and then fry.
I'd try soaking the Spam in cold water, changing it 2 - 3 times, or, buy low sodium(?) Spam if you can find it.
Or slice thinner pieces of spam
Hi
Or try Korean spams which are way less salty but still tasty.
No, the salt is so good.
I love the way she describes her foods. You can tell she’s very bright

The can and a mold!! Genius!!
musubis are here in hawaii, the good kind. 7-Eleven has the best!
CosmicShrimp they do I’ve been craving them for about 2 years now 😩😩😩
Damn, our 7-Elevens here are good for slurpees and Four Lokos
Yes! I used to love grabbing a Musubi from 711 in Oahu ugh take me back to Hawaii d
I agree I'm from kauai and 7 eleven musubis are the worst, the best are homemade or can be found at fish markets which usually sell out before noon.
I was about to say. They aren’t the best at 7/11.

my friend has this for lunch every day at school, so i decided to try to cook one since he gave me one and i loved it
Low sodium Spam (-25% sodium) and low sodium soy sauce (-40% sodium) make these so much better IMO.
The low sodium versions are also good 😊🤙🏼
The 25% Less Low Sodium Spam like the Costco stuff is HORRIBLE, pure mechanically separated mush, and I LOVE Spam, just not that horrid stuff.
I love spam with baked beans and rice!
Tried it for lunch today and it was delicious! Even tho I grabbed Thema wrong mirin and rice, the salty spam (baked mine) really made it for me. Thanks for sharing this recipe!
Thank you! That was easier than I thought, and the family loved it!
It tastes so good with a little bit of Sriracha sauce.
Not at 40$ a bottle😭 my favorite sauce
I just made these! I used low sodium soy sauce and spam. I don’t like overly salty foods so that helped quite a bit. I really like this recipe. Thank you for sharing!
You can get those at the 7/11's in Hawaii. It's my favorite snack :)
😲😲😲😲oh my gosh it so easy and I didn't know they use the tin to make it nice and compact like that. I'm making this immediately!!!!!! thanks Emmy!!!
Dancing, dancing musubi! Yum!
I tried this today and it was good! I sliced the spam thinner and put more rice since you said it was salty. Definitely gonna make this more often.

Spam I mean, but Spam Musubi are great for the beach or hiking, in place of sandwiches.
She showed the secret recipe! Now my mainlander friends gonna know lol 😂
Thanks for the step by step demo
you should try pineapple and spam pizza! I like to order pineapple pizza then put some diced fried spam on top of it. It taste pretty good and it balances they both balance out the juiciness of each other!
I just tried this.
The nori really sets off the flavor of SPAM. It is delicious!
I've never seen someone use the tin for shaping! I always just made it like a giant spam nigiri then wrapped the nori around it.
These are addictive, they are so good! Sweet and savory with roasted noi 🤤 I fully wrap mine in noi and I don't use sugar, also I use Turkey Spam 😋
i cant imagine how salty that is with additional of soy sauce lol, but probably it'll better instead of using normal soy sauce, use the Indonesian sweet soy sauce, at least it'll balance the spam saltiness a bit
it's not that bad the rice takes the saltyness away a bit
It was a cup of soy sauce, cup of mirin (sweet). And a cup of sugar. Doesnt take much to take the saltiness out of soy sauce
The rice balances it out. Spam musubi is delicious, coming from a Hawaiian citizen 😄👌
Joshua Mann well in hawaii we actually don't put the sauce unless we want teriyaki flavor but most people prefer plain spam rice and nori
Nicole Mao wea you from big island¿
Emmy every day we alwase eat that here in Honolulu Hawaii so glad you made a video of it
It's not traditional but you should try adding mayonnaise between the rice and the spam. It's really nice :)
Musubi isn't traditional, so it matters not what you add, as long as it tastes good.
It's literally just a fusion of Japanese-American culture and U.S. Military rations.
Omg I’m gonna try that next time I make musubi 😂 I could eat mayo on everything.
Funny thing is I don't care for mayonnaise on anything EXCEPT spam 😂
Nela Talalelei ur so gross I hate mayo

Is that sushi rice or regular white rice?
better if it is sticky, so that it sticks together
Yes, it’s regular white rice.
regular white rice. sushi rice has vinegar in it which would change the taste of the musubi.

I lived on these during my entire vacation in hawaii regret not trying out other local foods but it was love at first sight with these
I'd think spam, whch is already salty, would be way too super salty after adding soy ...
Yes!!!! Too salty!!!!
The sugar cuts out some of the salt. The rice also kinda balances out the salt.
+Jeremy Tang I hope
the place i get spam musubi usually adds an egg too
I usually prefer the 25%less sodium spam. It's nice with this recipe.
Great video. Quick and to the point!
