I wouldn't say it got more serious but rather there is more character development in which creates more jokes that doesn't require pre-existing knowledge of memes or references
Crazy thing is, in the original show, Krillin would've ended up with Maron had he had more confidence. He didn't feel like he was worth her so he let her go, she was into him for him but he couldn't see that. Ah well, in the end he got with 18 so he's STILL winning at life.
18 was a MAJOR uptrade
Maron was also a filler character, so she had to be written out somehow.
Didn't stop him from naming his daughter after her; but that's more of Toriyama just re-using the name and not Krillan's fault.

I forgot the distinction between the names, but i'm pretty sure his daughters name is a reference to his name, meaning something in japanese... I would recommend doing your own research if you're curious because im not doing it again, lol.

So the original Garlic was actually a villain that never had any screentime in Dragon Ball or DBZ. Jr. mad his first appearance in early Dragon Ball to settle a grudge against Kami, who was the one that actually banished Garlic Jr.s father to the Dead Zone as the guardian of Earth centuries before Dragon Ball takes place. Jr. is actually the only character in all of the Dragon Ball verse to successfully wish for immortality from the Dragon Balls.
I'm pretty sure Zamasu did so as well in Super.

Technically, Krillin wouldn't have gotten in trouble. The contract signed by the insurance company and Krillin would have been for him to have died. I highly doubt that the contract specified that he had to stay dead and couldn't be resurrected. Therefore, Krillin dying off planet fulfilled the terms of the contract, even if he was resurrected 4+ months later. So, I have a feeling that legally he would have been able to keep the money.
Akira Toriyama has interesting naming conventions for his characters through out Dragon. Villains were often named based around themes such as colors. Musical instruments, vegetables, and Bulma is a play on "Bloomers", a type of women's underwear in Japan. Her last name is Briefs even, another type of Underwear
Saiyans are vegetables.
Freeza's species are named after ice themes, while his minions are named after fruits (?), but I'm not sure about the Ginyu force.
All of Bulma's family are named after clothes.
Dr. Gero's family are an onomatopoeia of vomiting (Gero, Gebo, and his wife is similar but I can't remember the name)
Brief is actually the _given name_ of Bulma's father, not a family name. Like almost every other Earthling character, the family doesn't have a last name.
Bulma is just Bulma, Trunks is just Trunks, and her father is just Brief.

Burter = Baata = Butter

The dub changes that. Like making Bulma and Trunks last name Briefs. Tien's last name Shinhan (even though it's Tenshinhan), and Mr. Satan into Hercule Satan and Videl Satan.
You guys haven't seen Dead Zone yet? I guess you need to see that and World's Strongest then. Those are the first two DBZ movies, but Team Four Star started with Tree of Might Abridged (the third movie) before going back and doing the first two.

Having major characters named Carrot, Freezer, Vegetable, Piccolo, all that is perfectly fine, but one character named Garlic? That's just too stupid, man, no way.

Also, I don't think Krillin commited insurance fraud. Because technically he DID die, but they added nothing about being revived in the contract.

Toriyama likes naming characters after food. All of the Samoans are vegetables, all of Freeza's soldiers are fruits, the Ginyu Force is dairy, etc. Garlic Jr's guys were all named after spices and condiments, they just never got a chance to introduce themselves in this version.

They are mad about Garlic Jr. but naming in Dragon Ball has always been like that. Vegeta=Vegatable, Kakarot=Carrot, Raditz=Radish, Nappa=Cabbage, Gohan=Rice, Broly=Broccoli. Freeza, Cooler, and King Cold. Bibbity, Bobbity, and Boo. Bulma=Bloomers, Trunks, Bra, with their last name Briefs. Bulma's sister's name is Tights Briefs. This episode brought up Pilaf (as in Rice Pilaf). The Ginyu force are dairy based: Jeice=cheese, Burter=Butter, Recoome=cream, and Guldo=yogurt. Piccolo's brothers are Piano, Drum, Cymbal, and Tambourine.
Funnily enough if krillin did go to prison he would destroy everyone who came at him.
So in case y’all didn’t catch on, the whole Garlic Jr. thing is one of two filler arcs in DBZ. So that’s why it got skipped.
Also, it’s not that TFS decided to get serious with Season 3, it’s just that the story had far more “straight-man” characters than the previous arcs, so less opportunity to do wacky jokes. It’s still funny as shit, just more focused now that most of the characters are established.
Yeeee they mentioned that straight man thing in their creator commentary. But one of the funniest scenes in the whole thing is tien, piccolo, and bulma taking bets on who screws up first
The fun thing is that tfs made the garlic jr abridged fakeout, then later on, instead of releasing the broly move on april first, they released "dragon ball z abridged kair 2.9" which was the garlic jr arc
Just FYI guys, Kai 3.5 is an extended version of the Garlic Jr Saga so if you wanted to watch that next it would fit.

Garlic Jr.'s father, Garlic, was an antagonist of Kami before Goku, or Goku's Grandfather was even born. The character is only ever referenced.

you were supposed to watch the "dead zone" movie that tfs abridged before this technically as garlic jr is refencing it in the beginning and in the end of the episode, that movie is basically the garlic jr arc your referring too, and yes ik there was a set of episodes that happened in the actual show...i mean in context of the abridged that movie covers the garlic stuff...and was ment to be seen awhile ago before this...

I recommend watching TFS' DBZ Kai abridged. It's SUPER FAST abridged abridged of the seasons. Do Kai 1 and Kai 2, they're great. But they are SUPER FAST, so you can't really talk after you hit play

It's actually quite impressive that the Garlic Jr saga filler was compacted into one episode, mainly highlighting Marron in the yellow bikini for clean christian reasons I'm sure, and cutting out the other nonessential stuff by making Popo even scarier. You will see his backstory in the Dead Zone movie.
Marron continues to be a weird insight into Krillin's mental faculty; she looks very similar to Bulma, plus he named his daughter the same way (well, maybe different pronunciation the mother was very particular about it being pronounced the same way)
Season 3 though is where things kick up a notch, the narrative becomes tighter and you'll find yourself having to remind yourself even more that this is a parody.
The girlfriend is Maron. His daughter is Marron. (In Japanese, they are still slightly different, as "Marron" is "マーロン" instead of "マロン", the latter being "Maron")
They're both named after the same thing, Chestnut in French.
Maron in her entirety is noncanon, so the name being the same is nothing more than a reused asset.

This is my favourite episode until episode 60, which is split into three parts, but I consider it all one episode because it all has to do with the same stuff. And you're NOT allowed to hate Italian food. I love my last name. Cereghini. NO telemarketer can pronounce it, it's brilliant.

This is actually a filler episode and Maron is a anime only character. The reason why she looks so much like Bulma is rather depressing. Whereas Toriyama takes the time to make sure he gives each character their own unique look, the animators for this episode were on a very rushed deadline so they just straight up stole Bulma's design from the OG dragon ball show and reskinned it.

Garlic Jr. ... the saga that completely confused me, as I didn't know there was a movie about him and I only watched DBZ ... so when the Garlic Jr. saga was around, they all talked about "Garlic Jr. is back" etc. and I had absolutely no idea who that is xD
Only later I found out, there is a movie that is technically preceding the Garlic Jr. story ... the only movie that directly ties into the series ... yet, both the movie and the entire Garlic Jr. saga are still 100% filler xD

Maron saying "do you know what they do to guys like you in prison?" is a terrible line and horribly out of context. Krillin is a world class martial artist with energy powers. No prison in existence in DBZ would hold him, let alone stop him from making everything in that prison his bitch. I still hate that line even after all these years by how badly TFS missed the mark.

Whoever has been saying TFS starts taking the show "more seriously" or starts making it less comedic are all talking out of there asses or are straight lying to you. DBZA is a comedic parody from start to finish. TFS' writing does keep improving as it always has, and they do cool stuff if they can pull it off, but no one on the team ever would ever tell you that DBZA isn't a comedic parody first and foremost.
You need to understand this so that you don't continue on with expectations that TFS aren't trying to deliver in the first place.
