  • ACS member Warwick Thornton wrote, directed and photographed the feature The New Boy, about a 9-year-old Aboriginal Australian orphan who arrives at a remote monastery. The movie’s growing list of accolades includes a Golden Frog from the 2023 Camerimage International Film Festival, the Best Cinematography in Film award from the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts, the Best Non-U.S. Release award from the Online Film Critics Society, and a Spotlight award from the American Society of Cinematographers.
    Working with Panavision Sydney, Thornton shot the movie using E Series and C Series anamorphic lenses paired with the Millennium DXL2 camera. In this video, he discusses his personal division of labor when wearing so many hats on a production, speaks to the importance of prep as a cinematographer, shares advice he’d give his younger self, and much more.
