  • Testing a bit of the latitude of Vision 3 500T Super 8 film by using it in my Canon 514XL camera. This camera will only register film notches on super 8 carts up to ISO 250. So what happens when we use a much faster film? Let's find out together.

    Looking great, Michael! So you overexposed the 500T by one stop. That's about perfect for 10+ years old color neg film. Very nice result! I once got a very similar result regarding color with very old color neg (EXR 50D) and the darkest parts also had a magenta shift. Just throw-in some green into the shadows in post and it will look awesome. Great seeing Celluloid Alchemist captured by a fellow celluloid alchemist!

      Thanks, Christian!! Yes, over exposed by about a stop, maybe 2, not sure how accurate the camera is. I will say this...I love how far you can push this Vision stock!!

    Remember my Dad saying years ago , that anyone can shoot a super 8 film , but their is art technique and Patience involved in making a Good Film ( i.e not zooming too much ) a story etc, today we all carry a smart phone in are pocket , but who goes to the effort of making a good video with their phone, too much attention span given to other things on that phone ! eg social media, and billions of apps ...quick quircky shots to upload to tik tok etc..

    I accidentally shot a roll of 500T in my Beaulieu 1028XL as 50D. Metered for 50iso and probably opened the aperture up a little extra as I’m wont to do. Didn’t notice until I pulled the cartridge out of the camera. I was thinking, there’s no way this entire roll isn’t going to be overexposed…but when it came back from Cinelab I was surprised. The footage was completely usable. Definitely due to Cinelab’s HDR scanning as well as the crazy latitude of this film.
    Love the channel!

    Came out great Mike, considering the equipment is not designed for the speed and there's no harm in trying and only one way to find out. Yes, you could play around with it more in post or have it professionally done, but in the end there's only so much information on those 8mm frames and it's super 8, not 70mm Imax...!! Im the same kind of guy as you when it comes to how far do you go. I would've done a Homer Simpson spin on the floor if I got that result. It's super 8 and it looked like super 8, job done! Kudos.

      Thanks, Glen! It's funny how much I've learned, even since this video. I've learned much more about color grading and especially rendering film using the right bitrates. I was under-doing it for so long and allowing way too many artifacts. That's why we keep trudging along!!

    • @Filmboy24

      Hey Lyndon, I'm pretty convinced that 500T could probably do fairly well, using auto exposure in pretty much any super 8 camera. Give it a shot!!

    Hey! I was told the 514XL has a "one frame" still feature. Is it right? I'd like to get one just to take stills, do you think it's possible?

    • @Filmboy24
      @Filmboy24  4 месяца назад

      Definitely possible with this camera. It will shoot single frame and also has a cable release socket, so you can mount to a tripod and click the single frame via a cable.

    Nice one Mike! Just shot a roll myself in that same camera! I had no idea it doesn’t read 500 iso 😮
    Also the film didn’t seem to have ‘EXP’ at the end of the roll! Have you seen this happen before?? Fingers crossed it’s not a complete disaster!

    • @Filmboy24
      @Filmboy24  6 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks, Phil! If it was any Kodak stock, then yes, it definitely should have the word "Exposed" printed on the end of the film itself. If not, maybe the camera was telling you it was the end of the roll but it actually wasn't. I've had that happen with other cameras before. Did you see a gap in the perfs in the film itself, that would indicate the end of the roll?

    • @philwatt1865
      @philwatt1865 6 месяцев назад

      No gap! So yeah you were right! I actually tested the weight balance of the film against an exposed roll and it was clearly different (after figuring out the film goes from one side to the other as it gets exposed) and concluded the film was actually jammed in there. I found a short video on how to remedy this by pulling out the film and the winding on a bit. Worked a treat! So yeah long story short the roll isn’t finished. Thanks for getting back Mike, appreciate it! 🙏

    Does this camera default at 100iso or so for auto? I have a 512xl, I think that is what I read..

    • @Filmboy24
      @Filmboy24  2 года назад +1

      Hey Shane, by default, do you mean if you put a cartridge in it that doesn't depress any of the ISO pins (which is what this one did)? That's a great question, I guess I never really thought about that. Now I need to look into it!! Thanks!

    • @Shanesshiit
      @Shanesshiit 2 года назад

      @@Filmboy24 Yes, thats what I meant. To get a better idea of how over exposed it is..

    • @Filmboy24
      @Filmboy24  2 года назад +1

      @@Shanesshiit I would think that it would default to the highest ISO, since the slower speed film cartridges have less of a "notch", thus depressing the switches inside. I really do need to double check now though, thanks again!!

      @@Shanesshiit This is a really cool template that someone made. You can print it and hold it to pins in your camera or over a cart to check the ISO. It's a great little tool.
