How to swap the bridge on a gretsch guitar/Swapping the bridge on my gretsch g2420t streamliner

- I decided I would swap the bridge on my gretsch g2420t to a gretsch rocking bar bridge, I also made a sound comparison at the end.
This is done as a tuning stability fix aswell as a string buzz fix for your guitar.
If anyone is wondering I did not end up taking out the bridge pins, the intunation could be better but since it is almost perfect in the original position I decided against changing it.
Thank you for this video. I have the G2420 Streamliner without a Bigbsy and the saddle rattle from the stock bridge makes me want to jump out a window. I can't wait to replace my bridge and this helped tremendously. Cheers from Portland, Maine
Glad to be of service!👍
No doubt that makes a big difference to the instrument.
Thanks, useful! Can I ask what style you’re playing as a demo? I have a Gretsch for Chet Atkins stuff but would love to learn that hybrid picking style!
Its called Travis Picking (after Merle Travis), if youre just starting out you might find this video usefull: ruclips.net/video/bul6zo6IxOI/видео.html
@@samuelzetterman Ah, OK! I already do Travis picking but without a pick - it looked and sounded very different with a flat pick, much more rockabilly, I like it.
@@Saladzingers Thats the way Jim Heath from Reverend Horton Heat does it. Personally I dont like the soft sound of just my thumb and I find thumbpicks uncomfortable.
Thanks for that video! The original streamliner bridge is such bullshit. I ordered a rocking bar bridge in hope that it will end the strings buzzing and help the intonation. I will let you know.
Well it worked for me👍
Hi good video. I have a Gretsch G2410TG with the Vibramate String Spoiler for easier string changing. I ordered a Gretsch Bar bridge like yours i'm hoping that it will help a little with B string buzz at the first fret, also i'm hoping it will help with the B and High E strings jumping of the birdge saddles when I finger pick or pull up on them to stretch the strings out a bit I.'m thinking the Vibramate might be the cause of the strings jumping off the Bridge saddles. Any and all comments are welcomed. I don't really want to remove the Vibramate but if the Bar bridge doesn't fix the issue I might have to. Thank tou.
It could deffinetly help atleast a bit. The strings stay in place better than on the TOM style bridge mine had originally. The E string does still jump out ocationally. Imma have to look into if the string spoiler is the cause of the problem, but i wouldnt actually think so unless youre doing some major dives with the bigsby.
Hi again! So, I bought one of these, and I’m happy. But it was a close thing; the pins were slightly closer together than the holes on the new bridge. With a bit of a gentle push it can be pushed down into place but it’s a bit tight! Was it the same on yours? My guitar is a Korean Electromatic.
Yes thats correct, you lose a little bit of the "rocking" feature but some people don't like that feature anyway.
Hey nice. Thanks for the helpful video. I have a G2622TG P90s. I think the buzz in my G and B strings is due to its original bridge. Can you please recommend a similar good bridge (two options) in gold color (its TG) and from where to get it? Don't know much about these things. Thanks. Seeing how you changed it, thinking I should be able to to do it without much difficulty too.
Simular good bridge? Simular too whats in this video, or simular to the original?
@@samuelzetterman Sorry I meant similar to yours. But do give one or two other options (one like original too). Thanks
@@faautobahna9416 The only real recomendations i have is what i used in this video, the standard made by Gretch rocking bar bridge. They deffinetly do come in gold but im not sure where to get it. I bought my bridge from thomann since i live in europe, but thomann only sells the silver version. If youre picky on tuning stability go for a tune o matic style bridge (tom). But you might need to check measurements. Try going to gretsch-talk.com and asking some questions. Look what other people have done and get some inspiration!
is it that the holes on the bridge are beveled or is it the holes are to big for the posts? I have the same problem "B" String rattle. If this is such a problem what's it with Gretsch not fixing the problem?
The rocking bar bridge intensionally has holes that are larger than the posts and beveled so that it can rock back and forth when you use the bigsby, hence the name. (Worth mentioning, the posts on my guitar are just sligthly narrower which eliminates some of the rocking but to solve that you can just use the included base.)
I think the buzz comes from the generally loose fitting construction of the cheap t.o.m. style bridges on their budget models. Thus giving you a reason to buy a higher end model.
@@samuelzetterman thank you yeah the Saddles are to loose they need a spring on each screw at least. But I refuse to play that game just buy a better bridge for as cheap as you can and be done with it. Play Guitar not work on it or have problems all the time. Love my Rat Rod but that bridge has to go.
@@viperBSG A rat rod? Nice! Love those things. I tried for a while with just cramming cut ur pieces of rubber and junk in there to keep it still but after a while you just end up bending the retainer wire and it just rattles again. Plus i think the rocking bar or other options just look and sound better.
Hi, how about intonation? is it really out of tune or just a little? I have also gretsch g2420t and keep thinking about changing my bridge into a rocking bar bridge. If intonation is pretty much the same that would be better than bridge saddle rattle.
Its actually pretty much perfect, if i pulled out the bridge pins i could possibly make it a little better, but its not noticable at all.
@@samuelzetterman Ok, i was wondering, now i can order it without doubt. Thank you.
@@pawelb6003 Sounds great! Thats exactly why i made this video, people seem to think they need to get tru arc bridges with custom measurements but atleast for the streamliners that is not necessary.
@@samuelzetterman Hi, I have finnaly bought Gretsch rocking bar bridge from thomann and put flat wound thomastik-infeld strings 10-44. Intonation is really good and guitar sounds awesome. Keep playing your guitar and never stop. You are very good.
@@pawelb6003 Thanks, sounds great!
I received the Gretsch roller bar bridge and installed it. It went right in no issues except that my intonation is a bit flat on all strings and i dont have a clue how to fix it.lol Help someone.!!
You should push the whole bridge forward a little. If your bridge is pinned you might need to pull the pins out to push it forward.
@@samuelzetterman i didn't know one could do that. I thought pinned meant you couldn't move it
@@konjunto2477 a lot of people dont like the pins and pull them out annyway, most gretsch users prefer double sided tape. There are two types of pinned bridges the real "pinned" bridges have two metal pins that can just be pulled out with plyers, and the "secured" where the threaded rods that hold the bridge go all the way through the wood base, those can be screwed out a bit with a small allen key.
@samuelzetterman Thanks for the informative & helpful video. I know it's 2 years ago now - and I've never worked on pinned bridge, but if anyone reads this, MAKE SURE to CHECK if there is paint/top coat finish around the pins. If there is, use an xacto knife to cut a separation around the pins and the paint/finish before you pull them. Otherwise, the paint and finish could likely pull up with the pin and chip or crack the paint & finish around them. Again, however, I haven't seem one of these in person - just a word of caution.
