A documentary by James Franco about making an episode of Saturday Night Live. Was filmed in December 2008 and wasn't released to the public until 2014.
For anyone confused, this was filmed in 2008, was released in 2010 to the SXSW Film Festival, and then released to the public in 2014. It was edited all the way up to the 2014 release. That's why you see dates from way past 2008.
If you haven't already watxhed it, there's a 92Y panel on Bill Hader's show "Barry" with John Mulaney as the host. It's actually an hour plus of John making Bill laugh uncontrollably, knee slapping, falling out of his chair - it is the epitome of pure joy and comedic genius.

Well and even more particularly what I was thinking, like I'm about 45 minutes in so far and it feels fair to say that John Malkovich is a quality host in so far as seems really open and game for stuff, has a good sense of humor, not only generally but also about himself, how he's perceived, etc. I can't help but think how there might be a whole different film in looking at a given week where the host is so pompous and overly full of themselves, doesn't bite on anything. like I've heard a couple different cast members over the years who were there for it say that Steven Seagal was the worst host they'd ever dealt with because of how seriously he was about himself and his ego.

You probably don't know anyone, so there's the awkwardness and pressure to try and become friends with people and write with people, then there's the pressure of actually coming up with good ideas and writing them, and then having to present them in front of the entire staff and the host. Like fuuuuck.

I agree!! You can put your whole heart and soul into something and run on no sleep and push your body and mind as hard as you can for a week. But then turning around and doing it the next week? And the next week? That's unsustainable. No wonder there's so much turnover!

I love the part where they're trying to find the right fart sound to use and the woman asks does this one overstay it's welcome, and the fart goes on for literally 23 seconds and she genuinely is looking for a response as if the possibility of it not being to long is high from her perspective.
Let's take a moment to realize John Mulaney and Colin Jost wrote the Diner Lobster sketch right around the time this documentary was made. Bet they had absolutely no idea how and when that sketch would finally come to life. (Although in retrospect they wrote it closer to when it came out than when it was made).
@@marihoneey there's a behind the scenes (behind the joke) video about it, I think released by SNL's YT channel, I think. But yeah Jost and Mulaney talk about writing the sketch a decade ago and it never working or even being able to be pitched then. It just proves to me even MORE their collective genius, and how much talent is in those writers' room for such a powerhouse sketch to never even see the light of day originally.
Still my favorite SNL ensemble cast: Bill Hader, Forte, Fred Armison, Jason Sudeikis, Andy Samberg, Kirsten Wig, and Keenan . I miss that era of SNL, the humor, writing and overall vibe isn't the same since Seth Myers and John Mulaney left

actually i’m in high school now and only really remember watching on tv the recent cast of kate and keenan and cecily, but i honestly enjoy this era of writers and cast best with bill hader, bobby moynihan, john mulaney, kristen wiig, i could go on. but i don’t really like the oldest ones. comedy tends to change over the years.

There is some magic in the sleep deprivation ritual. This formula is sacred. Substances will always play some part in the process, depending on the individual and their proclivities. But staying up all night is a free high, all on it's own and then, a couple hours of sleep and rise, to present, the shit you hammered out when you were wasted the night before. What could go wrong?

I don’t think I’d ever be able to work at SNL solely because of the pitch meetings...like obviously everything else seems really stressful, but presenting an original idea to a group of people and a major executive sounds like the most anxiety-inducing thing literally ever

I really think this was the most talented era for cast. Maybe when Tina and Amy were there is better but that core of Bill, Andy, Fred, Kristen, Will, Jason and Kenan was magic
It is but it’s such a stressful job, it’s staying up late every night at work and you’ll have to write multiple different versions of scripts where things are changed moments minutes before they go live. All set and costumes and makeup has to be all done in one week
kjts 101 IMO, there were some great cast members that held their own after people like Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig left, like Taran Killam and Vanessa Bayer. Unfortunately, most if not every cast member after Beck Bennet and Kyle Mooney has only been fine at best. The writers are also way less funny. At least the current state of show is nothing like the mid 80s, where the only good cast member was Eddie Murphy. I believe the show can bounce back (eventually) like when it did in the late 80s and early 90s.
Seems like they could just give Bill Hader some caffeine and put him in the middle of the circle and get a hundred ideas just listening to his inner dialogue.

A friend and I used to have this little running gag we did when we were bored where we more focused in on the sound of the main guy's voice, because it was especially soft and kind of 'breathy'. We pretended he was actually a very prolific serial killer but loved nothing more than to strike up everyday conversation with people at the store or the library detailing all of his kills. This gentle old man voice going "So then once he woke up from the blackout I had his hands tied, and I started cutting off his toes one at a time. I just love doing that, and admire the people who've paid real special attention to their nailcare. You don't want an ingrown one, that can just be such a headache."
I am in disbelief that not only have I never seen this, but never knew it existed. I’ve seen so many SNL Documentaries and behind the scenes footage. This by far, REALLY gives you a full glimpse of how hectic and nerve racking everything is. Great upload!
Something with Vinnie Vedecci wasn’t working quite right, was at risk of falling apart and Seth stepped in with rapid decision making, cleaned it up and set it right. That was pretty impressive to watch.

That must really suck when you literally don’t sleep for one specific sketch - it gets through all the hurdles, but bc it “doesn’t work” during dress, it’s as if it never existed. Being a cast member, thats got to be the most devastating part of the show. I felt bad for Forte.
That’s true, I wonder how often sketches that don’t air one week are recycled on future shows. If not then a lot of really funny ideas have gone down the drain.
@@tyleralbrecht2623 while I'm not sure about recycling sketches, I know from different snl interviews they've done for late night shows that there have been numerous pitches that get recycled, if a writer or cast member wants it badly enough
@@tyleralbrecht2623 it does happen sometimes. Some examples i can think of rn is that in the Kevin Hart christmas episode the Active Jack sketch was recycled from another episode (forgot which lol) and the Don Pauly sketch from the Bill Burr episode was recycled from the Adam Sandler episode
@@jetster4117 and while many sketches have been quality expressly due to how immediately culturally relevant they are, that's what great about also having an idea that's funny AND timeless, and isn't at all hinged on a particular host's baggage or whatever. It maybe didn't make it initially just out of time constraints, especially if some other major thing was going on that week, it's the kind of thing that could fit in at any given show.
Never knew so much work went into writing the show. Lots of pressure. And very little sleep. Fascinating. Because making a skit is so difficult..I see why they use the good ones over and over.
you know, i’ve been thinking lately about going into a career of comedy (specifically sketch comedy) and after seeing this documentary, it really only makes me want to pursue it more. yeah, it’s super stressful and you forget what sleep is for a while and your sketch might not be funny or make it, but when it does make it on the air and people genuinely think it’s funny- that’s what i live for. the instant gratification of knowing “i did a thing that people liked!” just seems like a really good feeling to me and all the ‘downsides’ seem worth it in the end. this is such a good documentary, thank you for posting this!
Omg same here SNL is like my dream job, seeing this makes me want to be on SNL more, and IK it’s very hard to get on the show (I mean Jim carey and Kevin Hart didn’t get on) but i’m not a person that loses hope right away, and being an actress now I can see it happening.

My favorite part of this is that the candid personalities of so many of them, and the way some of them have bad hair, it reminds me of the funny but dorky kids that deserved better in high school. It feels like watching those kids getting what I hoped for them.

SNL is definitely one of the most stressful and nerve-racking places to work at and yet everyone that worked on it talks about the show with such love and appreciation. It really shows it’s a dream come true, even with all the ups and downs.
Goddamn I feel so bad for Casey Wilson....they caught her on such a bad week. All of the cast members..even the greats had them....it just really sucks to have a camera in your face when that happens.
She said 'you' lose all your confidence when it should be validation to get that gig because everyone else around you is at the top of their game. LOL naw sweetheart, YOU lose all your confidence because youre trash at this and now its been confirmed. All I kept thinking when she was on was "how in the hell did she get that job? Holy Shit" and "who in the hell did she beat out in that audition??" She shouldve never happened.
she had a really rough run on SNL, little she did clicked. sometimes really talented people just aren't good for SNL, and she has proven that with her post SNL career which has been fantastic

This documentary is amazing. 2008 was "my cast", essentially the cast that I watched in college. This behind the scenes is fascinating. Also, I have new respect for Casey Wilson. I did not like her as a cast member, but I really feel for her in these scenes and really grew to like her after leaving SNL.
@@deanbalboa The show is designed to change based on new cast and writers. Its literally the format that makes it still watchable. So I'm assuming he meant a new behind the scenes documentary would be interesting to watch because of the change of cast and writers.
the core rawness of what really SNL has to go through the real business aspect of it vs what you see in fantasy as the actresses and actors perform, it's not all just fun and games. I love it.

Now this is a documentary! That’s about as genuine and candid as you can get when everyone is still aware of the camera. This truly shows how insecure even these brilliant comedians really are, and how everybody is still very human. It’s intimidating and the vets of the studio are clearly more comfortable but also stressed by the weight of the show. And you can see how the really funny jokes shine compared to the mediocre ideas that get silenced out. Now do you see how this isn’t just a liberal propaganda machine, you neoconservative psychotics?
Michaels leans right, and was all for Trump to be on SNL in 2015, and to be treated "nicely". They are, or at least were, friends (I say that because, Lorne cant possibly be that horrible) But good job, genius!

I’ve been to one SNL show. One thing I noticed that you can’t really articulate in this documentary is how unbelievably loud the band and musical guests are in that tiny studio. It pummels your whole body. I loved it.
No wonder coke was such a big part of snl. It’s so much work and it’s so exhausting. They almost gotta do coke to get through it. Or at least adderall 😬🤷🏼♀️
@@Cripjoy not in this documentary, but mulaney often talked about in interviews that he was always hopped up on Adderall at SNL and so we're a lot of people. Also if you don't understand the cocaine reference, essentially half the original cast died because of their come habits.

I can't believe that Kenan Thompson has been on the show since 2003! 17 years is like 4 lifetimes when you're on SNL.

I don’t think I’d ever be able to work at SNL solely because of the pitch meetings...like obviously everything else seems really stressful, but presenting an original idea to a group of people and a major executive sounds like the most anxiety-inducing thing literally ever

I really think this was the most talented era for cast. Maybe when Tina and Amy were there is better but that core of Bill, Andy, Fred, Kristen, Will, Jason and Kenan was magic

It is but it’s such a stressful job, it’s staying up late every night at work and you’ll have to write multiple different versions of scripts where things are changed moments minutes before they go live. All set and costumes and makeup has to be all done in one week

kjts 101 IMO, there were some great cast members that held their own after people like Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig left, like Taran Killam and Vanessa Bayer. Unfortunately, most if not every cast member after Beck Bennet and Kyle Mooney has only been fine at best. The writers are also way less funny. At least the current state of show is nothing like the mid 80s, where the only good cast member was Eddie Murphy. I believe the show can bounce back (eventually) like when it did in the late 80s and early 90s.

A friend and I used to have this little running gag we did when we were bored where we more focused in on the sound of the main guy's voice, because it was especially soft and kind of 'breathy'. We pretended he was actually a very prolific serial killer but loved nothing more than to strike up everyday conversation with people at the store or the library detailing all of his kills. This gentle old man voice going "So then once he woke up from the blackout I had his hands tied, and I started cutting off his toes one at a time. I just love doing that, and admire the people who've paid real special attention to their nailcare. You don't want an ingrown one, that can just be such a headache."

Something with Vinnie Vedecci wasn’t working quite right, was at risk of falling apart and Seth stepped in with rapid decision making, cleaned it up and set it right. That was pretty impressive to watch.

That must really suck when you literally don’t sleep for one specific sketch - it gets through all the hurdles, but bc it “doesn’t work” during dress, it’s as if it never existed. Being a cast member, thats got to be the most devastating part of the show. I felt bad for Forte.
That’s true, I wonder how often sketches that don’t air one week are recycled on future shows. If not then a lot of really funny ideas have gone down the drain.
@@tyleralbrecht2623 while I'm not sure about recycling sketches, I know from different snl interviews they've done for late night shows that there have been numerous pitches that get recycled, if a writer or cast member wants it badly enough
@@tyleralbrecht2623 it does happen sometimes. Some examples i can think of rn is that in the Kevin Hart christmas episode the Active Jack sketch was recycled from another episode (forgot which lol) and the Don Pauly sketch from the Bill Burr episode was recycled from the Adam Sandler episode
@@jetster4117 and while many sketches have been quality expressly due to how immediately culturally relevant they are, that's what great about also having an idea that's funny AND timeless, and isn't at all hinged on a particular host's baggage or whatever. It maybe didn't make it initially just out of time constraints, especially if some other major thing was going on that week, it's the kind of thing that could fit in at any given show.

you know, i’ve been thinking lately about going into a career of comedy (specifically sketch comedy) and after seeing this documentary, it really only makes me want to pursue it more. yeah, it’s super stressful and you forget what sleep is for a while and your sketch might not be funny or make it, but when it does make it on the air and people genuinely think it’s funny- that’s what i live for. the instant gratification of knowing “i did a thing that people liked!” just seems like a really good feeling to me and all the ‘downsides’ seem worth it in the end. this is such a good documentary, thank you for posting this!
Omg same here SNL is like my dream job, seeing this makes me want to be on SNL more, and IK it’s very hard to get on the show (I mean Jim carey and Kevin Hart didn’t get on) but i’m not a person that loses hope right away, and being an actress now I can see it happening.

SNL is definitely one of the most stressful and nerve-racking places to work at and yet everyone that worked on it talks about the show with such love and appreciation. It really shows it’s a dream come true, even with all the ups and downs.

This documentary is amazing. 2008 was "my cast", essentially the cast that I watched in college. This behind the scenes is fascinating. Also, I have new respect for Casey Wilson. I did not like her as a cast member, but I really feel for her in these scenes and really grew to like her after leaving SNL.

I’ve been having a really hard day and then I found this on my recommended. I didn’t even know they made this doc AND it’s with my favorite era of snl. Thank you for this! :)))
Now this is a documentary! That’s about as genuine and candid as you can get when everyone is still aware of the camera. This truly shows how insecure even these brilliant comedians really are, and how everybody is still very human. It’s intimidating and the vets of the studio are clearly more comfortable but also stressed by the weight of the show. And you can see how the really funny jokes shine compared to the mediocre ideas that get silenced out. Now do you see how this isn’t just a liberal propaganda machine, you neoconservative psychotics?
It's gotten much worse since these days. SNL always had propaganda, but I'm guessing a lot of that comes from Michaels.

I’ve been to one SNL show. One thing I noticed that you can’t really articulate in this documentary is how unbelievably loud the band and musical guests are in that tiny studio. It pummels your whole body. I loved it.
