@Jonathan Lumbreras He answers your question around @5:42. Teleprompters break down, but it's also nice to have something physical in your hands. It feels easier than scrolling through a teleprompter and it sparks a connection between the cast and the writers.
That sounds like a cop-out to allow people to retain their jobs. In 2019, theres no legitimate reason not to have these automated on teleprompters or iPads for people who "want to have something physical in their hands". This allows for cards to be a backup, avoid the chaos of re-writing cards in a time crunch, ensure each cast-member has their own color. This also leads to the question why not have the prompts in cloud docs and printed before the show so that writers have the longest timeframe to make edits.
@@justinlinville7290 He said one of the main reasons he does this is because a teleprompter can shut down and during a live show, nothing can be done at that point. To have physical cards insures that the show will go on. I'm a videographer and while I agree with you that it seems frustrating to continue to go down the cue card route when they have the funds and access to a decent teleprompter, I still believe the cue cards are incredibly more valuable to the show. For instance, what if someone messed up their lines, and the teleprompter kept scrolling? It would take a least a few seconds to pause the teleprompter, and then insure that the text was rolling at a decent and natural pace again. Sometimes scrolling text is difficult to read for people, especially when they're nervous and in front of a live audience. Cue cards are more easily read, and has a simple technique. Simply hold the sign up until the actor is done with their lines. If they're cracking up or the audience is laughing, keep that cue card up. Teleprompters are this whole thing, I can't tell you how long sometimes it takes to get the timing right on those damn things.
@@Deidredit I respect your opinion on the teleprompters themselves but your reply totally avoided my other 2 solutions. As someone who works in computer programming specializing in automation there's no reason that the scripts couldn't be used as slides (no scrolling, no losing place, triggered by the same person) on devices such as iPads or keep the scripts digital and then print them day-of. In terms of technology shutting down, thats a weak excuse for the 2019 solutions I've provided and for an associated response: that's like saying they shouldn't tape the show live because of the fear that the cameras will malfunction.
@@justinlinville7290 I apologize for not addressing your other points. I'm sure cloud docs would be helpful, but I'm not so sure about printing them right before the show. @@astropioneer3296 If they get the job done, they get the job done. I think the reason behind this is, that most of the staff has worked for the show for so long... Maybe they're racist, maybe they're not. Maybe these are just the people they ended up with, and it has nothing to do with that. Who knows.
@@dadjake its whos idck you svck
@@yolovideos8084 would you mind writing in English? You sound like a 12-y/o trying not to say fuck... Not to be rude :'D
This sounds like such a solid way to pay for NYC rent 😭
(We love Wally , we don't trust him ) 😂🤣
I love these kind of videos. You can't even imagine how much time and effort goes into something that later looks so effortless. Comedy is a serious business.
This is incredible. Love seeing this behind the scenes stuff here and to see these guys get some kudos. Pretty fascinating they've managed to maintain the analog setup all these years. Very cool behind the scenes look.
BRILLIANT WALLY & Co.!!
I wish I had a cue card guy to get me though my day 😆👍🏼
İ do almost same think when i am memorizing my notes for exams. İ use different colors according to importance/lesson /visual effect etc. And i use pretty big papers and glue them to my wall temporarily. After using it 3-4 days i use other side . İt is pretty effective for college exams as a visual learner
Thank you for your professional tips and that is good professional tips for making film or something
In the future
These behind the scenes details make you appreciate the show and staff all the more. ❤️
It's so cool they gave these guys the spotlight, so much goes on behind the scenes !
2:57 STREETER?!
Also, I have so much more respect for the people behind the camera now.
Makes you respect the show even more. Even the sketches that aren’t that good should get more credit
Streeter Seidell? More like 'Streeter Pie-fell'.
You know.
Because a pie fell into his mouth.
And he ate it.
Yeeeeeees old school CollegeHumor fan
and he pretty much loved it
Ooooooh! I don't get it.
@@spirosmousouris3908 Hey guys? I don't mean to be the bad guy, but... _[taps watch twice]_ 🤷🏻♂️

Yay Wally. Keeps it goin.
Holy crap its Streeter
I was going to say " Holy, crap the guy from College Humor" because I forgot his name.
Bryan L , he’s working with College Humor again on his show: Lonely and Horny.
Hi I'm randomly scrolling through the comments as one of the main writers for the past few years,( not all of them) and I just wanted to say hi, but I still need money and work.
@@chaosdweller Say what? You're a writer on SNL?
@@NESherv yeah writer-producer, just like a lot of other tv shows, doesn't pay much though 😁
"Live from New York, it's Saturday Night!"
It says so right on that card...
Thank you for posting these videos. I love learning about all "backstage" things and how the show comes to be.
It's amazing that this show ever makes it to air.
I could’ve watched a 2 hour documentary version of this ❤️
i love the cue cards!
Wallllyyyyyyyyy. You're the man.
You guys do an incredible job, makes me appreciate even the ‘bad’ sketches seeing how much work goes on behind the scenes.
BTS videos are my favorite types of videos. Love seeing how everyone works together to put on such great shows!! Keep up the amazing work!!
Oh my god. It’s Steeter from College Humor. So glad he’s doing well.
Super Nova yup
I’m pretty sure his name is “Eater Pie Fell”
I miss Streeter Seidell on College Humor, great to see he’s doing well, though.
Boots Sheck lol u noticed too
The second I saw streeter i couldn't believe it was him im excited for him lol and knowing he's screenwriting makes me more okay with watching new SNL
@@kristinodee138 remember whem Amir did the standup prank on him and he was scared because he thought there could he "industry people" in the audience. I guess he got with the industry people and I couldn't be happier for him :)
@@1Dubbelman actually all of the prank videos were faked, but Streeter did leave collegehumor for SNL so someone noticed something
My mind is just exploding right now. 🤯🤯🤯....SNL is soooo awesome.
Excellent video. Thanks for the behind the scenes look and giving respect to those who are part of the team.
LOVE This. I always loved Stefon and heard that story that his cue cards would get changed but I never heard who was too blame for it. Thank you, Wally, and for all your other work on the show as well. :-)

I love how Shia gets a "not today" when he tries to check in with the cue card folks.

Literally what an orchestra librarian does with musicians!!! Much respect, this is amazing.
I love that Wally gets so much love and recognition!
