Steve Martin is a comedic genius in his own right. The problem always comes down to the fact one master cannot copy another verbatim, nor try to replicate an act correctly. Steve Martin is a master who should stick to his own work, not hurt his image by failing to copy Sellers.
Considering the way most incidents involving him turn out, this actually wasn't a complete disaster. Nobody got hurt, and there was only minimal property damage.
and most of it wasn't his fault. They gave him a loose sword, the pigeon landed on him out of its own volition, and the president got his tie stuck when he reached to kiss him.
