Are Electric Dirt Bikes Realistic Yet?

  • Electric has long-been on the horizon for dirt bikes, it just makes sense - Silent, torquey, low maintenance, impossible to stall, no changing gears… The list goes on. And there have been a few attempts at bringing one to market in the last handful of years, most notably by Alta - Who were promptly screwed over and squashed by Harley Davidson. So my hopes weren’t exactly high when hype started running rife about some 80hp beast a company I’d never heard of were planning to make… But lo and behold, the Stark Varg is real! And it’s made it all the way down to New Zealand, where I got to spend a very wet and rough Berm Buster Sunday riding it, courtesy of AFC Motorcycles - Who were sick of misinformation spreading around about how long this bike lasts, and takes to charge. They told me to ride it all day, and that as long as I put it on charge between laps, it’d outlast me… Here’s how that went!

Mate of mine started development of an electric cross/enduro bike couple of years back specifically aimed at cross-country/enduro competitions with an hot swappable battery. They've got their concept bike running a couple months back and are now setting up contracts and final design changes for series production. Should be going to market within two years with the aim to be as close to a gas powered bike in use as can be. The battery swap taking as much time as a quick fuel refill eg.. Company is called Stern motorcycles (yes, name is similar but they didn't know about the Stark when they registered the name :') ). Couple of the employees have ridden the Stark by now as well and are impressed but feel like the hot swappable battery of their bike will be their unique selling point. Just hope for their sake that Stark won't come out with such a bike within 2 years.

The "green" aspects of an electric enduro/mx bike are not the way you charge it, as for most countries even if you charge it at home you use anywhere between 0 and 70% "green" energy, while the reset is gas, oil or coal, but the fact that it doesn't make any noise thus doesn't disturb local residents for urban mx tracks, and doesn't disturb wildlife for enduro/trail tracks, as well as minimizing the pollution you leave on the tracks as there is no exhaust and no 2 stroke oil and overflow gas dripping all around the track. From a riding perspective, especially in hard enduro, having unlimited torque and a hand rear break for those rear sketchy situations where you are stuck on a steep climb where you could not use your foot rear break to get going is amazing. Also the fact that the maintenance is significantly reduced (basically just gear oil every 40 ride hours, break pads and tires) is bliss. The main problem is battery range, and in hard enduro, the fact that the weight is too up high, so if you drop the bike it's a pain to lift compared to a 2 stroke. My typical hard/soft enduro trails are anywhere between 40 (mostly hard) to 80 (mostly soft) Km long, and as it stands, for example the Stark can only do ~50 km in 45 HP mode, maybe a bit less if I'm doing hard tracks where I end up spinning the wheel in place more often than on softer tracks. This much HP is more than enough for the conditions I'm used to riding, but the range is simply not there yet. Once the range will end up closer to my preferred ~80 KM and the wight is at least shifted a bit lower from the top with a wider but less tall battery, then I'm seriously considering getting a Stark or equivalent electric motorcycle. Till then 2 stroke is the one to go.

They're a specialized machine made for a racetrack in which you know how far you're going and have a generator nearby. Just have to remember there's no flexibility with this bike. You can double your range on a petrol bike simply by carrying some fuel in a pack or swapping over to a long-range tank. If you buy the Stark and decide you want to do a bit of back country exploring, ride a slightly longer route than usual, or ride high load terrain such as the dunes you're basically screwed.

    • @icantdrift

That just comes with understanding what you’re getting. No bike is perfect for every rider and type of riding, and if you buy any bike without understanding what its strengths are you’re setting up for disappointment. Love the video just have to say- Stark isn’t about being green. Imo. This is a toy not a daily driver. This is meant to have fun, just like having 80hp. Nobody… Nobody needs an 80hp dirt bike but it freaking rips so why not. And why is the conversation always centered around a stark owner only having a stark. Or just one dirt bike. Why doesn’t anybody imagine a person who owns multiple dirt bikes, and one of them happens to be electric. Not being rude but it is something I see.

It’s popular to universally hate all electric vehicles based on various political beliefs, especially in the USA. On the Stark, I reckon a better choice will be the Flux Primo for several key reasons over the Stark.
It is an Enduro bike first of all and will be able to have rego.
It has KYB suspension tuned for Enduro riding.
The LH lever operates as both an 'electronic clutch' if pulled with throttle on, and then a re-gen rear brake if pulled with a closed throttle.
One of the most important features is the swappable battery, meaning you could race it like a petrol bike if you can afford the second battery.

I put my deposit down for one years ago, but when the email finally came to pay up and get my new Stark, I bought a new 24' 300xc-w instead. Honestly can't stand hearing about the Stark anymore. Every time I see one I roll my eyes lol. All the marketing hype, "I beat gas bikes on an electric dirt bike" hype, and virtue signaling fatigue is fully set in for me.
Stark still sends me an email every few weeks asking if I'm ready for my new varg (after first threatening to lose my place in the production line if I didn't pay). Look I have 3 race bikes in my garage and it's like a full time job to train and maintain them in between races. A bike like a stark is something I could never race as an XC and enduro racer, and it would just be a fun novelty like a pit bike or a crotch rocket. I can't be forking out KTM 450 factory edition with custom suspension prices for that. I suspect you'll see mostly financially well-off older vets riding these things, like adventure bike riders. Those older cool dudes that show up at the races in a $300,000 custom camper van that looks ready for the apocalypse to race their anodized orange billet aluminum everything KTM in sportsman's class.
Then eventually once the masses catch on to the fact that there are silent electric dirt bikes, noisy gas bikes will be banned at pretty much every track and off road riding area. More stringent environment action plan commitments from our politicians will mean these types of vehicles will start to receive pre-programmed limits how much time or distance and even where you can ride them, which will be easy to implement because they're already connected. They can be easily limited by government directly through the manufacturer, much like drones are regulated today with altitude ceilings and disabled take-off in restricted geo-zones. Updated periodically with the latest limits via firmware updates. Not to mention full "flight record" of everywhere you've ever been via gps and what your speed was etc.
The masses will pat themselves on the back for doing the right thing for the environment. Meanwhile the energy and manufacturing industries will continue to pump out 97% of the worlds pollution and continue to profit off us idiot monkeys on our restricted electric cars and motorcycles. All of us riders will reminisce about the good ol' days of real bikes...

The old rich man point resonates with me. A few guys in my town are loggers who bought property here in the 2000's when we didn't have a highway and you could get a 3bd house for 100K. Now those houses are worth +2M and these boys are spending it with fury. This crew all bought Surrons initially and now they're on the list for Starks. They only bought em because one got a Tesla and fell in love with electric motors. He also has a 1 ton despite being retired. He's as far from an environmentally conscious person as you can get. They don't ride for long enough for battery life to be a problem. I think there are buyers for electric vehicles that are buying them because electric motors are super fun.
I don't know about the restrictions though. I think you might be giving politicians too much credit, they don't care what the masses are yelling about. In America, they won't ban vehicles with internal combustion motors until the biggest American companies won't be affected. Could you imagine if there was a federal ban on ICE vehicles within any impactful timeline, it would shrink the GDP massively. No, they will continue to make Executive Orders like the Biden admin's ban on ICE vehicles by 2035. I don't believe that congress will pass anything that could genuinely hurt the American automotive industry. This is how politicians appease the public, they create the perception that something is going to change, but in such a way that nothing actually changes. We fight about it on social media using the least amount of nuance possible, and they keep doing the same shit. The cycle continues.
As for the GPS tracking, I wouldn't be surprised if that's already happening with bikes, electric or not. Selling user data is free money. I'm more surprised when a company isn't collecting an obscene amount of data. Car companies are already collecting an metric-fuck-tonne amount of data from cars: foundation.mozilla.org/en/privacynotincluded/articles/what-data-does-my-car-collect-about-me-and-where-does-it-go/#where-does-all-the-data-go
I think the real danger to consumers is a lack of right-to-repair laws. I think it's more likely that we end up with products that are impossible to own outright, similar to John Deere in Canada today. You can buy the equipment, but if you don't update your software, your tractor won't connect to your baler properly. Only John Deere dealers can perform that update, and it's not cheap. Or Apple phones, if you take 2 brand new iphones, and you swap the battery from one to the other, both phones will become bricks. Or when your Jeep Cherokee has a tranny issue and the tranny is a sealed unit, Stellantis won't even fix it for you, you must buy a reman tranny and only a dealer can install it or the ECU shits a brick.
The masses won't get what they want, they will get enough to believe that their interests are considered, but no policy will ever pass that will hurt GDP significantly. Economy > people

    1. Do you know if the bike had crawl and reverse crawl available? just with the latest update that brought out those 2 features Stark have managed to get 10% more out of the battery and they've made it track better which produces better lap times, according to their material. N.B. Getting over the air updates for the bike is straight forward and pretty good that they can keep improving the bike after you already have it.
    2. When you were talking about the brightness of the display did you see the display actually has a night mode that does the white writing on black background to reduce the brightness of the screen?
I have one of these bikes, got it in April, I love it. With no gears they are easier to ride so you can spend more time thinking about line selection and body positioning etc, and with the quiet engine I can ride it around the lawn in suburbia and not annoy anyone. Love the videos anyway, great mate

Somewhat interesting video. The most glaring omission was you never mentioned what power level you were riding in. I can’t imagine wanting more than 40 hp setting with all that mud. Also, you weren’t very clear on how much time and range you got out of how much battery percentage. At the beginning of the ride, I believe you mentioned very quickly that you’d used 40% battery in a half an hour, which kind of sucks. Any other trail rider would not consider that passable for an “every day bike“. Just my two cents, thanks

I wonder if it would be possible to spend another $10-15K on a 25-20kWh battery bank you could charge at home and keep in your van to charge the bike with? Assuming one felt terribly concerned about being as green as possible. Alternately, could you use an electric truck to haul the bike to the trails and then charge the bike form the truck's batteries? Would be a pretty cool setup if it worked

This is what China is doing with cars. You pull in, get out of the vehicle, and the battery is exchanged autiomatically for a new one in about 20 minutes. If it detects any issues, the battery is removed and taken out for service. It's faster and more practical for the average electric vehicle owner. I would despise waiting in line only to then have to wait for my battery to charge. They haven't figured this out yet, and it's not green and it does terrible damage to our environment. Yet they shove it down our throats while car makers are losing money making them; people don't want them, they are not convenient, nor is the motocross bike...

Thanks for doing this video! I've been looking for some kind of review like this. My trail rides are longer, like hour or two hour without coming back to home base, so I'm not entirely sure it would work for me, but maybe adjusting the way I ride would make it a possibility. My other curiosity about the bike comes down to long term reliability. I currently ride a 19 year old YZ250, and the thing runs as good as it did when it was new. I also think about the fact that if something breaks or needs to be rebuilt on the YZ, it's no problem - parts are plentiful and cheap. What does a 10 or 20 year old Stark look like I wonder?

If the stark actually had 986 nm (6 times the torque) you would instantly be thrown off and the bike would always wheelie no matter what. Maybe close like 200nm but still def not what they say. It also got 67 rwhp (rear wheel horsepower) on a dyno IN 80 HP MODE. The 450 with the turbo made 82.5 so if we can inigrate that power in the future gas bikes def won't be gone.

It's like riding trails with a 5 litre tank, works great as long as you can get back to the truck every hour, but pretty risky... Better hope you don't take a wrong turn! Also, hauling a generator out everytime you go ride? Pass.

  • @mgreenesco9955
    @mgreenesco9955 Месяц назад

Fun as it may be, for most people it still isn't an option. The bike itself is around $20,000 aud and to have the setup there to have multiple rides per day also includes I'd guess at least a 10kw generator running on petrol or diesel which will cost you another 6-10k plus fuel to charge it in half to one hour breaks. So you're at 30k plus ongoing fuel costs and have to haul a generator everywhere you go to complete the most basic of rides. Race teams may be able to wear that but your average rider has no chance.
