For me, when I played and how I see Connor is a intellectual, detailed and smart android. At the start, he thinks of deviants as just mistakes or the deviancy is a issue in they’re programming but when he turned deviant (choice) he starts referring to androids like they’re human, and realizes they deserve as much rights as they do.
My thesis is that Connor is already a deviant waaaayy before he starts to notice because he’s afraid of being shut down by Amanda. That would also explain his machine path in wich he won’t become a deviant officially, but he knows as long as he’s with Amanda she’ll bring him back in a new body every time he dies (also one reason why he looks so shaken when introduced to rk900 and he’s told he can go now since he’s obsolete and will be deactivated) But that’s only what I like to believe and conclude from his behavior (like being afraid of heights for the rest of the game if he fell and died during chapter one or the foot chase in “the Nest”) So that’s just my opinion
Like at Kamski’s places when he doesn’t shoot Chloe. When Kamski suggests he’s himself a deviant he’s pretty shaken and insists he isn’t. That’s also why Markus has to convince him to become a deviant instead of converting him like all the others. He already is deviant, he just has to see it and admit it to himself. If he chooses to stay a machine he’ll just deny it again and try to convince himself of it
