  • Ever wonder where your guitar came from?
I'm not talking about the brand, but the materials. Specifically, the woods that make up your acoustic guitar.
There's a lot of acoustic guitars in the world with Sitka Spruce tops, Mahogany back and sides, etc... and this documentary I've found gives some amazing insight into some of the issues that are facing the sustainable harvesting of the raw materials used for guitars.
This is a MUST see for every acoustic guitar geek.

I watched Musicwood the other day. I’m a “Taylor guy” not only because I happen to love the sound of a Taylor, but in doing so, I learned more about what Bob Taylor is all about, and now very much have a great respect for him as a human being. I was playing my 214ce a few minutes ago, and was looking at the top, and a profound sense of dread came over me. As I looked at the instrument, it really hit me that it’s not “just a guitar” that G-d forbid if something ever happened to could easily be replaced, but that it truly is a precious thing that comes from a very finite resource. I’ve really also grown a great fondness of Koa, and in some small sense of solace, am very appreciative of what Mr. Taylor is doing in Hawaii, and Cameroon.

Amen brother! Have to say I didn't just survive the series, I couldn't wait for each new episode. Growing up in the 60's urban Canada, I never considered Country Music worth much consideration. Now that I'm a senior and a musician and seen a thing or two, I realize how much I missed. Ken Burns & Co. set me straight and left me hungry for more. I had no idea of Emmylou Harris' back story, as but one example. Still not a fan of the "slang 'n' twang", but Country bands are just about the only ones still making real acoustic music live on stage, and I treasure that. I'd love to have the DVDs too, but for now I'll be satisfied with the entire series on my DVR; it'll only get erased when I replace it with the genuine original.

The really cool part that some people miss is that these trees can produce thousands of guitar tops per tree. And those thousands of guitar tops if properly cared for mean they don't need to be made again.
So with a little self-control in the industry, we could easily be in real good shape and still have all the guitars we like. It just takes a little self-control and planning. I'm glad to see that some of the major guitar makers are taking that in the consideration .

I cannot urge EVERYONE here enough to watch Ken Burns series "Country Music". To be re-exposed to the origins of what, at the outset, was an acoustic based genre, was a re-awakening, of sorts. When you realize what a HUGE community based experience it was for thousands, if not millions, of everyday folks to constantly gather together with family, friends and neighbors to play music and sing, it's partly sad to see how the years have lessened that. Thank goodness there are modern 'communities' like this and others as well as occasional places where it's still easy to gather with like minds and hearts. Whenever one of us reaches out to another to play or sing, even if it's to only one person, we are still carrying on that legacy. May we all keep sharing and growing.

Tony, "Take my Heart" is a brilliant song, wonderfully performed. It's refreshing that the music shares in the song equally with the lyrics; They're like two performance; one steps up to take the lead, while the other supports it respectfully, then they switch. I haven't really listened to any of your stuff, but I'll be looking for the recording with brand new respect.

I bought a Tonedexter preamp earlier in the year. I had tried so many ways of amplifying my mandolin. I tried various pickups with various preamps, mics, ect. Everything sounded squawky and synthetic and mics are just not right for me in the bands I play in. I can happily say after 30+ shows using my Tonedexter, my quest for great plugged in tone has ended. It works similar to the Fishman Aura system (the only thing that compares), except you create your own map from recording your instrument. Its one of the best gear purchases I've ever made.

If GOT or Fender can make some $$ great, and I kind of like the looks of the guitars, but I would not pony up for the upgrade. Thank you for the song, but what really blew me away was the tone from your resonator. I was listening to RUclips while starting dinner, loved the song, and was fascinated by the sound of that guitar, and was really surprised when I saw it was a steel body resonator. #smallwins: Several of these to report. First up, this weekend (5 Oct) I'm hosting my first-ever TAC jam and house concert, featuring Trevor Gordon Hall, with special guest Adam Monaco (of TAC's own Maggie Pope's group, Under the Oak). Super stoked for this, and TAC East will be well represented. Second, I have to voice my appreciation for the sheer variety and quality of acoustic musicians I've been introduced to through Acoustic Tuesday, many of whom I was unfamiliar with or were in genres previously unexplored by me. Examples abound: Molly Tuttle (!), Billy Strings, I'm with Her, Toby Walker, Clay Parker/Jodi James, Keb' Mo', and on and on--and many of these I've been able to see live. On AT#98, you featured Mandolin Orange, and not only have I bought some of the suggested albums, I've also got tickets to see their upcoming show in DC in November with Chuck H III. Forever musically in your debt.

Here's a story and a question for you all about being stewards of our tonewood forests. A few years ago, I was told my '73 Guild D35 that I purchased new needed a neck reset or it would become unplayable in a few years. This guitar has an amazing sound and it has been my musical companion most of my life. So I found a good master luthier, and he cautioned me that the restoration would cost more than the guitar was worth, and to first think about getting a new one instead. So, I tried a lot of new guitars, and the ones that came close to the quality of sound and playability to me were the Gibson Vintage J45, Martin D-18, and dreadnaughts from Huss & Dalton and Santa Cruz. Strangely, Bourgeois didn't make the cut. Anyway, they all cost more than the restoration. I decided to go ahead with restoring instead of buying new. Mostly, I just could not bare the idea of my old companion slowly fading into that great sound hole in the sky. But I also felt that it was more responsible to rescue this fine old wood over contributing to demise of our tonewood forests. Here's the question. If you had to choose, would you restore a fine old guitar or buy a new one, and why?

    • @guitarvicg
      @guitarvicg 4 года назад

@Lou Alleluia The first thing that I'll tell you is that you made the right choice for you if for no other reason than you think your guitar sounds the best and that you have a bit of history attached with it. I believe your luthier may be thinking about resale value. The fact is that vintage Guilds don't have as much resale value as vintage Gibsons and vintage Martins, however if you don't ever have any intentions of reselling your guitar, you want your luthier to maintain your Guild to its most optimal playing condition. Restoring was the way to go in my opinion. Congrats on getting your Guild in better shape.

Greetings from the middle of nowhere in southern illinois! For the #whatdoyouthink segment I agree that the Fender choice is definitely a marketing gimmick, but from a business standpoint I can't fault Fender for the business ploy. At least the guitars were likely purchased, and I hope they are played over the years. It's not an optimal use of limited resources, but hopefully they don't end up in a landfill! I figure fender would lose money making a Game of Thrones signature lute (I'd probably buy it though). I love the singing Tony! It definitely fits the song. You had a 1926 2-17? Do you still have that guitar? If so it'd make a nice #Tonetalk piece to show, if not I envy you for the opportunity to play a piece of history. Good episode as usual.

taylor facts: scott paul, who was a director of GreenPeace, is NOW a director of natural resource sustainability at my beloved Taylor Guitars. Taylor has been documenting sustainability for years, here are some examples: Bob is working on producing tone wood colonies of koa (which he bought land w/ his own money) and maple; taylor introduced streaked ebony; taylor brought modern day and safe work conditions to cameroon; taylor created a new company, stella falone - which creates high end ebony kitchenware; taylor pushed through challenging boundaries - for example, taylor is PAYING the local cameroon tribes to take care of ebony planting for the first 5 years, then the tribes own the trees, then when it's time to harvest, taylor will buy the logs from the tribes. taylor is an innovator in guitar making and also a trail blazer for sustainment. that's why i PROUDLY own 6 taylors.
finally...tony...seriously...you said you were looking at a lowden. i'm disappointed. this just means you need to go guitar shopping again. i have a lowden driftwood cedar/cocobolo s35 12 fret on order...google driftwood cedar lowden, and be prepared to drool.

I thought the GoT guitars were cool. It's for the hardcore fan who happens to also play guitar, which is a bit of niche I'll admit. While there weren't any electric guitars or guitars in general (haven't watched GoT so I wouldn't know), but the connection ultimately lies in the theme of the guitars bearing the house sigil's and the fans love of the show that ends up buying one or all of them (if they're flush with cash lol). Side note I believe there's a GoT themed Lagavulin. We know for sure there's plenty of liquor in the GoT world 😂😂😂😂😂

The Game of Thrones guitar concept is so cheesy, but I got to admit I'm holding out for the new Fender Golden Girls guitar.🤣🤣🤣

Hey guys. Please reach out to Kyser (makers of THE capo) to participate in the Guitars for Vets fund raiser. Kyser is based in Canton Texas and about 45 minutes from where I live. I know they would be excited to participate 1) It is a wonderful thing to do, 2) Kyser makes great products and 3) Did I mention they are based in Texas???

The only thing to say on the Game of Thrones guitars is that it sounds better on cello.

X = the number of guitars you already own; Y= The correct number of guitars to own. Therefore; X+1=Y. I think that's right.

Game of Thrones guitars? Marketing, that's what. That said, I've never seen an episode of GofT so what do I know?

I haven't seen GOT either but I don't believe you need to be a fan to think that designing guitars for a show, that does not have any guitar specific association, is just a little bit off and says that this was done more for the marketing and to capitalize on the fan base than
it was to pay homage to a performer or musician.

Have you ever thought 💭 of having an Electric Life RUclips Channel? I know that Noah and you would do phenomenal having an Electric Life Channel, because Tony I know that you own some electrics and I would like to hear you on some of them!!! Much love ❤️ towards Acoustic and Eventually Electric Life channel! I would not want to own this guitar 🎸, because it is too dang expensive, $35,000.00 for a guitar, I would rather buy a new car instead. Also, I believe that a guitar should be after a person, not a tv series!!!

Well wudda ya know, money makes the world go around, and people who are good at making money -and good products- tend to be good at finding ways to make more money..and products. Fender benefits off of GoT's popularity, obviously, but GoT also benefited by having their name brought into the guitar arena (as if they really needed more viewers, right?).
Hell, GoT also made their way into shoe lines, Adidas, I believe, with a pair of shoes made for each "house". But I guess if I had to have an argument, I'd say that at least on the electric guitar side, with these rock musicians playing the theme songs, it makes a little sense. You see rock, heavy metal, a lot of times using fantastical album art etc... Swords. Dragons. Whatever. Makes at least a bit of sense, eh? Or not.

I will watch the documentary used to work for GreenPeace I was a canvasser first then I went into the office of member care! Was a part of a protest with Martin Sheen we were all arrested that was a trip.. Then I started working on the Atmosphere and energy department were in a hot air ballon over New Jersey with a. banner that said GreenPeace. that was so fun recommend highly to go on a Hot Air ballon just once they all come together in New Mexico watch out for alien’s 😆 . I’ve been arrested twice a very very. humbling experience but I’m not that old but it’s what I did during my twenty’s. Just thought I’d throw it to you Tony And Sir Noah donate to Greenpeace, they most of the time the people all working at Greenpeace they pay for these actions that count like stop destroying our land and air. Well that’s the end of my rambling. Hope you guys do it!

Ed from Aloha, OR: I think the Fender "Game of Thrones" guitars are utterly ridiculous. I read the 1st book and watched one or two episodes of the TV series, but the tie in to electric guitars seem dumb, which means they probably made a ton of monoey (I agree with Noah on this point). I think all speciality guitars are kind of dumb, starting iwth the Mickey Mouse guitar as seen on the Mickey Mouse Club in the 50s (my era). If you like music, then make music. If you like Game of Thrones, then read it or watch it, but never the twain shall meet.

As for the fender G.O.T guitars..
I loved watching Brad paisley rock the shit out of that guitar.
I like the stark model. However it's a tacky gimmick and totally unnecessary other than fender crashing in

As a person who's never seen Game of Thrones, and a grumpy old fart, it seems like a cynical marketing excersize. Consumption for the sake of the dollar. Makes me suck teeth.
