Hi good evening to all, from Scotland

Man it’s been a busy few weeks. Just caught up on the last 3 episodes of AT having had a different schedule the last couple of weeks. So glad to be back in the loop with my favourite show.
Regarding the effected acoustic guitar question in AT113: I love effects on acoustic guitar, but, I think it’s best when the guitar has multiple pickups, such as a K&K Trinity for the clean acoustic sound, and a magnetic or undersaddle for the effects pedals. You have the best of both worlds, the integrity of the acoustic from a K&K, with effects in the background coming from a second pickup. I use this method and my pedals include overdrive, wah, whammy, Ottobit Jr (for stutter effects), the crazier the better! As a solo musician, effects pedals really bring another layer to the music, and with two pickups going at the same time, it brings a bigger world of sound. And man, stepping on a pedal and bringing in some crazy effects will never stop being fun!
Another cutaway fan here. I have both cutaway and non-cutaway guitars, but the cutaway wins for me primarily for the higher fret access, and feels more natural to me for the body percussion.
As always, loving the mentions of metal music in AT. Are you guys Pantera fans? If yes, let me know, I might have to mail you something 🤘

About tuning down for really low notes. It's mostly about the string, not the guitar. A higher gauge string does the trick. I have a piece in open C tuning, where the 4th and 5th strings are tuned down by two semitones, and the low E is tuned down a whopping 4 semitones to a C. When I started with my everyday strings, the 6th string rattled and buzzed like crazy, but I just made a custom set with lights on the treble strings, and true-mediums for the bass strings and it's perfectly fine. The 6th string is a .056. Matt's tuning is open B, just one semitone lower, so he probably does the same. Or he could use strings designed for a 7-string or a baritone.
It's all about getting graduated tension similar to the tensions you'd get with a standard string set and standard tuning. The folks at stringjoy.com/ are all over it. They have a good tutorial at ruclips.net/video/2wwtY9sJcZc/видео.html and a cool online tension calculator at tension.stringjoy.com/.

Cutaways - I can take them or leave them. I do think there's a slight tonal difference between a cutaway and non-cutaway version of the same model, but then again there's a slight difference between any two examples of the same model. If it sounds good, it is what it is.

Hi again from Dover, Pa! I practice at least an hour a day. Usually more. Learning new songs, (new to me), keeps practicing fresh and enjoyable. New chords, leads, etc. have the same effect. I'd like a cutaway for some leads and for slide. Since I play only acoustic these days, a cutaway round neck resonator would be great! A small bodied guitar for finger picking would be nice also. Cheers!

On your "what do you think" topic/question, I'm in the "whatever works for you, works" category; my own guitarsenal features acoustics with and without cutaways, though my more recent acquisitions have been in the traditional body shape (i.e., Martin 00/000 types). Perhaps it's my own inexperience (compared with others), but I've not detected a discernible difference tonally among either body style, aside from what coloration may pertain to the specific tonewoods involved -- but again, these tend to be subtle.

I don’t like cutaways on acoustics but on the electric I feel like they’re supposed to have a cutaway. Electric arch tops like the L5CES or ES-335 or Super-400s look amazing with their cutaways and are pretty amazing too

When i started playing guitar, i kind of did so backwards, in that i learned to play lead before practicing chords. So for me, ive preferred a cutaway, because i always played lead higher up the fretboard. Lately though, ive been learning to play some David Rawlings style leads, so i find myself not really needing a cutaway for leads. For slide however, id rather use a cutaway. Great show again guys, keep on keepin on.

Though I'm a fairly well-versed guitar player, I still need to practice as does everyone. A couple ways I found to sneak in some extra playing time when normally you wouldn't think about it are really very easy, and fun. One of the times I like to play is when I'm watching TV with my wife. I don't want to give up this time but I pick up the guitar and I subtly play along with whatever soundtrack during the show or commercials always minding to keep in tune with whatever is going on. It doesn't distract, and it doesn't bother my wife to hear the music that is already playing being repeated by my guitar. It's also a great way to help train your ear. And I can still follow the show, but I still get to keep my fingers nimble. Another way actually involves an electric guitar. I know it's not acoustic, but at night time when no matter where I play in the house people could probably hear it and be disturbed, if you get an inexpensive electric guitar and an inexpensive headphone amp you're golden. You could noodle away and practise and such and it never bothers anybody.

John v from Raleigh on a Saturday evening. Technically, there is a sonic difference between a cutaway and non-cutaway. I like to play in the upper area so I prefer it. But as you and everybody else often say, no two guitars will sound the same. So, I don't think you can say the difference is because of the cutaway or because they just sound different.

  • @paulsmart5199

I would like a cut-away on a 12-fret guitar (preferably OM/000 size). It's a guitar I would want for finger-style, and would like the easier access up the fretboard. Even then, I would be picky about the type of cut-away (prefer soft vs sharp). I have played a 12-fret dread, but I pretty much stayed below the 7th fret (great guitar by the way - Martin D12-20). How old was that guy? 15 or 16? Anyway cutaways, I've never played acoustics with and without back to back like that demo you did. I will say, through my laptop and 1/4 decent headphones, the non cutaway seemed to have more mid and bottom, which I love. On acoustics I prefer the look of non cuts, but if I found a cutaway that feels good and sounds good, I would buy one. There is a smaller body steel body resonator at my local guitar dealers that I would buy in a minute if I had the $$. Hopefully he will sell it before I get the money so I don't have to find a spot for another guitar hanger. Great show again, thanks and keep up the good work. Pat in MSO

On the issue on "torrefied" guitars, i'd like to try that just to satisfy my curiosity on how it will feel when playing. maybe there will indeed be a difference between that and a new guitar, but i do not think it will be the same as an old guitar. You see, torrefaction only involves the wood, or in some cases, the top. For guitars that got old though time, everything, i.e. the wood, and the hide glue gets old.

To be honest, the question on cutaways never really occured to me. I've always bought guitars by walking in to a store and try everything that's within the budget I have. I always end up buying what felt good to me the most, regardless of material, shape, color, cutaway or not. This discussion made me think. :)

I am totally apposed to cutaways, I am not proud of it because I can see their possibilities, I just really don't enjoy the look (makes me think of hair metal bands for some reason!) and then I'm in a bad headspace the whole time I'm playing.I'm not a great guitar player though and so far I've had no reason to be up that high very often + the notes (on my guitars anyway) sound weaker as the get way up there. I need to work on my musical snobbery. Also, I strangely had a feeling that Bourgeois was Tony's first cutaway!

Always thought that a cutaway was a brilliant move; there are notes now accessible that aren't without it. Then, however, I got myself a guitar with a cutaway - and I never use it. I'm not that great at leads and, for now, it's simply catching dust and waiting patiently.

I’d prefer cutaways with OM/000 or the Taylor Grand Auditorium shaped guitars because they are Sooooo versatile and are great for any acoustic style! However I dislike the dreadnought cutaways as I find they look very much like they are suited for the 80’s hard rock/Bon Jovi/GnR and strumming/acoustic lead stuff etc and that’s not my scene! Non-cutaways I totally dig into.

While not in favor of torrified tops, I am ambivalent about cutaways. I own one acoustic cutaway, an all mahogany Taylor 512 Grand Concert 25.5"scale. It's in DADGAD land right now. Liked the guitar; bought it used; cutaway not a factor in acquisition. My other acoustics are all non-cutaways. If a guitar is born with a cutaway, I don't call it a defect.

Tony, for your reference, the city of Leicester, is pronounced like 'lester', and the county, Leicestershire, is pronounced 'lestersheer', with the 'shire' sounding quite soft.
As for cutaway vs non-cutaway debate, I have both, but would if you had a gun to my head I'd go for non-cutaway, if push came to shove, I'd probably go for the non-cutaway; they just seem more versatile when it comes to aesthetics.

Aesthetically, I like seeing cutaways on orchestra and similar style guitars, but for the most part hate the look of a cutaway dreadnought. From a players standpoint, you really have to know what you're trying to achieve. I believe that the vast majority of players, myself included, never bother playing above 12 and most that think that they eventually will find that they really never do. The most I ever do in that area are right hand harmonics and that doesn't require a cutaway. As I said, tho, on orchestra and rounder styles it looks pretty cool and I own several myself. In fact, the look of my Breedlove cutaway orchestra is about as bitchin' as it gets, lol. As far as differences in sound, I just don't know. My sound is my sound no matter what I'm playing. Either way, thank goodness there are so many options these days.
