Great ideas . My dog had constipation with rock hard stools, probably due to lack of drinking. After a few attempts I finally succeeded with a large bowl of water with beef stock in and broke up a sardine. She wanted to eat the sardine pieces that she saw going in but could not get them until she drunk a lot of the water. It worked. I will remember the coconut oil too as I always have that in stock xx

I completely understand. The older I get the harder, this life gets. And my little doggy certainly helps to lift my spirits. It’s just sad what’s been done by the overgrown governments to make our lives just so much harder and so much less enjoyable. 😔

Dr. Jones - about 2 years ago I asked about constipation remedies for cats and you kindly wrote about flax seed. It has worked well for my cat,and since then he hasn't had an episode of bloody BMs. At the time, he was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and developed bloody BMs. He had his lifestyle changed from outdoors to indoors thus being less active. You had mentioned also the importance of activity for cats. The flax seed still works wonderfully -- thank you very much.

    • @justjess986

Saga Poetic and how did you give it to your cat? And how much and how often? Lastly how long till he produced a bowl movement? Thank you so much for any insight on how you successfully treated your baby with flax seeds.

@@justjess986 I'm so glad I found Dr. Jones' website, and his flaxseed advice has been a God-send. It saved my cat's life. Before I found Dr. Jones' site, I had to rush my cat to the vet because he was weak from dehydraton and bloody stools/diarrhea. The first vet wanted to run all sorts of tests and wasnt sure the problem; the second vet I went to identified the correct problem but recommended Hill's diet and it wasnt helping and the problem continued. Im knocking on wood, but since I started giving him the flax seed and watch out for his habits per Dr Jones' advice -- my cat hasnt had a bloody episode. I love my cat of course but the expense was a huge issue as Ive gone back to school for nursing and my cat's problem wasn't resolving.
I add a half a teaspoon of ground flax seed to his food a day when he has constipation. I mix it in with his wet and dry food to make sure he will eat it because at first he was being finicky. Now he eats it but I make sure to mix it well with his food. He is a 16 pound cat and bigger than a westie terrier. He will have a bm that day or the next day. Im on a student budget so this is why I give him this amount; but you might be able to give it to yours twice a day. I try to play with him 1-2 times a day but unfortunately I dont do this daily with my schedule. The other thing, I try to buy food made in the US or Canada because that is regulated. The food made in China is not regulated (or the other pet products). I avoid food that says 'meat by product' because I read it could come from diseased animal kill or road kill and no telling how long that meat had been out as it is. I give him wet and dry food mixed together and I add a couple of spoons of water to the food too, so he gets more liquid for hydration and easing constipation. I had read that cats get easily dehydrated with illness and can die from this, so the spoonfuls of water to his food each time he gets his dish has added benefits
I live in the US so for dry foods I have gotten: Whole Pet from Whole Foods (its their budget line), Fromms, Market Fresh - these are a few dollars more than commercial dry brands. For wet food, I use the Whole Pets shredded chicken (Whole Foods' 365 budget line), Dave's, Fromm's pate, Nula. Im crossing my fingers, but so far my cat hasnt had issues with these foods. I read that Sheba used to be a great budget food and it is a commercial one, but Mars bought it and offshored production I think to Thailand. So, Im not sure if it is a safe bet. I try to mainly give him Market Fresh dry food and Whole Pets chicken wet food. I use the other foods if my main staples are out or once in a while as a treat for my little guy. I read somewhere to avoid tuna, especially for male cats - there might be a link with kidney problems for them. I later read that there are different causes for ulcerative colitis in cats and that constipation was one possible reason. In addition to the bloody stools, my cat alternated with constipation and diarrhea (the diarrhea may stem from the constipation too). For him, I pay close attention to his litterbox habits and what goes in there. Also, when I got my cat - I was his 3rd owner and he had been outdoors mostly - he had parasites and I had to get him antibiotics. I keep him indoors all the time - the parasites can wreak havoc on their systems and so easy to get from their outdoor kills. I hope this helps and your cat gets better. It is stressful to go through.

God led me here yesterday. I had already made an appt. to euthanize my 17-year-old male dog. It was NOT an easy decision, I simply thought his system was just shutting down due to age. A lot of other circumstances led me to make that decision (losing bladder control, etc.). I've come to the conclusion he must have had a virus in addition. However, we will simply change the vet appt. from the original reason, to having him checked over. Thank you!! God uses you to really help people. God bless you!! I get to keep my baby a while longer. Yes, he will go to Heaven someday. But not now.

I’m so happy that you didn’t have to make a hard decision for your fur baby . I had to do that to 2 of my fur babies not long ago and I still cry every day over losing them they were just my children . I loved them just as much as I do my children and my grandchildren they are a member of our family too . I hope your baby gets better very soon and you can enjoy him for many more years to come. Praise God! 🙌 I am so happy for you and your doggo.❤️ I'm currently dealing with so much pain in my heart after our family dog got severely sick the last few days. He was vomitting. A vet came to my dads house to check him out and did some blood tests and found out he has heartworms and anemia. They put him on a iv and he was doing much better the next day. But then the vet told us that since he is not able to defecate and is too weak for surgery, he recommended to put him down. My heart is breaking 💔 it hurts me that he is that he's not able to defecate , he tries and tries and only little watery poop drops come out. 🥺 I'm just leaning on God to heal our dog Marley, praying for some extra time with him, and that he is able to poop without pain in Jesus name 🙏

this stuff works great, I have found that this stuff mixed with canned pet food over time works. also add as much warm water as possible to it, just as long as they will lap it up. at first you could very possibly need a few cc of pet-emma to jump start the stools temporarily every time you notice a major blockage for how ever many major blockages untill natural bathroom cycle occurs. you can also thin out the pet ema with warm water if you think its to potent. just use the bare minimum pet ema to get stool movement. this has worked for my pet👍

Thanks. It is good for us to see that the kitchen is truly the heart and hearth of the home. Caring and curing are linear and incremental. No need to apologize for the timing. As caretakers we (your audience) have been patiently tending our own families of animals and people. We often regret what we didn't know to do. That's the linear aspect of time. But we can learn better options and make a comforting difference next time.

My cat is shy about eating in front of our dog too--probably worried he will snatch the food out of her mouth. Also that company makes a 'Pumpkin pie mix' that you don't want to get because it has other ingredients like allspice and nutmeg and sugar. Just get the label that says 'organic pumpkin' which only has pumpkin as the ingredient. I found that cooked butternut squash is a laxative for dogs too. Thanks for the informative video, Dr. Jones.

Sent this to my husband and he mixed all 3 together and gave them to her. Hope we didn’t overdue it. My 9-10 lb chihuahua was always going 3 x a day reg size stools but in the last 3 days she has only gone once a day and just a small amount. I’m worried because she eats bugs and anything else she can find. Stuffed dog toys don’t stand a chance around here. I remove the squeakers because she tries to get them out. She loves the squeak but she would try to swallow it I’m sure. Only thing I found that lasts are those small orange balls that have holes so they can breath while holding it in their mouths. First I got her the chuck it blue and orange ball but she had the squeaker out in minutes. Thank heaven for those chuck it small orange air fetch it balls.
Hopefully she is not overloaded with stool softener. We are puppy pad people so she can get there faster.

Dr.... Im very surprised you missed the fact that your cat wasn't eating the pumpkin because he was just concerned about tula's interest in the pumpkin that was a social issue and I'd imagine it's just cuz you were watching the camera and thinking about making the video so I apologize if I'm pointing out the obvious and I don't intend to embarrass you, because I love what you do and I'm very proud of you for taking the stand you did I worked on the veterinary industry for 4 years and I know darn well you're doing the right thing. So anyhow I just was actually making this comment to defend the use of pumpkin to make sure that nobody misinterprets that slight to the 🧡 pumpkin

Hi Dr. Jones, was able to get Gizmo to consume Pumpkin Puree by warming it up and mixing a little honey in it. I coaxed him by putting some on my finger, then some in my palm( in larger amount). He ate it all. I did this for 3 days as he slowly started to empty out all the poop. In addition to giving him fresh chicken broth only for his food. Fortunately, he is trained for indoors/&outdoors so he can "go" whenever he has to day night.
FYI, I've also started to give him 3 drops of fluid extract
Black Walnut and Wormwood because I found a rather long white Worm in his second bowel movement. I saw this video, on RUclips, by Dan Scott on "How to naturally
treat a Dog with worms". I give him 3 drops per day for 2 weeks, then nothing for 1 week, then 3 drops for one more week. After seeing a few more small worms, I'm happy to say i haven't seen anymore. But, I'm following the regiment to ensure that he is completely Worm free.
As always, your advice is welcomed. Thank you😊.
PS: I have another dog(Havanese) whom I am also giving the Worm detox to clean him out too.

Hi Dr, my cat has been battling to go the last 2 days. The 2 days before that she was vomited up 2x quite large and compact hairballs. I have been treating her with pumpkin and coconut oil the last 2 days. I just boiled the pumpkin until soft and crushed it until it was smooth. My cat is a fussy eater so won't ear any of them alone. She has been on a raw diet for the last year and a half so I have been cutting the chicken, chicken hearts & chicken gizzards very fine and adding the smooth pumpkin with the blood. I have also mixed a small amount of coconut oil with just blood so she gets some of that oil. I have also tried rubbing some coconut oil on he front legs as when I put on her paws they get full of soil when she to try relieve herself. So can we do punkin and coconut oil on the same day and is what I'm doing correct? How long does it take to normally sort out constipation? Thank you 🙂

Flax seed doesn't have solid evidence of bioavailability in dogs and it contains a form of cyanide not to mention its high in fiber which could contribute to constipation and upset stomach. Pumpkin is great but if your dog really needs to poop I would skip the pumpkin or only does a small amount. Coconut oil however is the optimal choice. I gave my dog some fatty chicken on top of his normal food with the skin mixed a small amount of pumpkin and decent dose of olive oil. I did this after priming his empty stomach with some olive oil. And it didn't take long for his poop to come out and though slimmer than normal looked overall like a healthy consistency after the really hard backed up poo came out 1st. So do what you want ...OR check and question what information you consume like I do and try your best to do what's best not just for your dog but yourself and family!
Long story short oil's like Coconut and olive are best for constipation in my experience .Good luck to you all and I hope yalls dogs live long and prosper ❤!

My dogs get a spoon of ground flax everyday with their raw diet. Fruit and vegs, and bone broth are added and they seem to be in top notch health. Raw ground meat from the local butcher at $1 pound. Can't beat it. We free feed kibble, too. Be sure to add Dr Jones supplement! 2 of my dogs have allergic reactions to coconut oil, so that's out of the question for them, but w their diet they have no problem of constipation. Keep knockin' on wood!

Hi Dr. Jones we have a 15 yr old Pekingese "Lion Puppy" and he's developed some constipation the past year or so and I wanted to ask why the Coconut Oil is in solid form and is it okay to give as oil oil? I've been giving him 2 tea spoons of Pumpkin and two tea spoons of Olive Oil it's definitely helped but I want to try the coconut oil just wanted to make sure if it's safe as oil? I soak Peppers chicken in the olive oil when I give it to him. Thank you so much for helping. 💜🐾

I literally just gave my dog pumpkin with a very lean turkey nothing else because his stool was loose. Then my cat opened the door to where I keep my treats and he ate a bunch of air dried turkey neck treats and idk what else now he's constipated and your telling me to give more of what I originally gave him for loose stool which clearly seemed to harden his stool. I'm sure the treats made it much worse but my dogs barely pooped in the last day and a half so I need to get him cleaned out.

When the sistuation is so serious just give him miralax, dulcolax.
However, for everyday use, make linseed flex seed you boil the grains briefly over low heat, then when they cool down, use a syringe to take only the jelly, without the seeds.

Unrelated question, but seems like best place to ask: I have adopted rescue dogs my whole life. However, I have always dreamt of a French bulldog. I'm scared to try and find one because I'm not sure what the best way to avoid sketchy breeders, puppy mills, etc.
Our dog is getting old and I'd like to get him a calm companion. I am disabled, so definitely need a dog that doesn't want a ton of running and such. Any advice?

I've been giving Skit's my older cat your ultimate feline since 2018 plus fluids for renal failure, I had the maintenance guy and 6 teen's bring up a refrigerator Monday Angel who has been constipated for years,I give her Doctors best hairball, digestive aid & fish oil capsule she hid for hours and I noticed she wasn't eating & she loves water and drinks it for 5min. But I saw she wasn't drinking but licking her lips as if she wanted it but was nauseous so this was Thur when I saw this I took her in immediately the x-ray showed only 1 lung first he said it's possible it's a hernia her white count was high then he comes out with the other Doctors think it's agressive cancer brought on by stress! A 600$ ultrasound would confirm a hernia & 2,000 surgery if she was stable, I'm a disabled Senior and I would have to take out another loan! Could a lung collapse from straining to poop? She's in extreme distress and not getting enough oxygen. I don't understand cuz she was running around the house up the cat tree and back in the front room? I'm looking for an idea since a collapsed lung doesn't inflate by itself and I don't trust any animal hospital that gets commission on services plus he ran a 153$ thyroid test which was separate from the CBC and not necessary since he already saw the x-ray! I'm now giving her capsules that I make with the ultimate feline formula and syringe feeding pate food he prescribed zeniquen and I switched it to orbax I think zeniquen is too strong for her I told him what I was going to do and he was upset, any suggestions would help with my decision as I don't want her to suffer 🙏🙏

Hello, doctor! I just got a 7 week old puppy (Pomeranian/yorkie/frenchie mix)from a woman on Craigslist. I had an almost 2 hour drive back home and so far my tiny tiny puppy hasn't pooped since I've brought her home. She has only gone pee once so far. How much of either of those do I give her?

Our dog had bloody stools and then diarrhea for a few days and after a colitis diagnosis she’s suddenly stopped going for two days. The odd thing is, she’s ravenous. She acts like she’s starving and wants to eat constantly. We feed her twice a day and that’s all. This dog always had perfect stools and went regularly three times a day and since this bout with colitis she won’t even try to go. Now that her stomach is settling down I’m wondering if it’s normal not to have any movement at all? This is so scary and strange.

Oh that cat lol... cool. My cats always want what the dogs are having and vice versa, guess I'm lucky..
I knew about the coconut oil and flax seed (I consume it almost everyday myself as well), and I also believe it leaves them with a shiny coat. Didn't know about the pumpkin though.
Thanks once again Doc. Cheers :)
