Street Art pioneer FUTURA started painting his name on walls as a coping mechanism to deal with his struggle around identity. But as he turned a signature into a brand he quickly realized that it could also be a business. And that's where things got interesting. From Lower East Side galleries to t-shirts and toys to collaborations with nearly every blue chip brand you can name, over the last 40 years FUTURA has redefined what it means to be a pop artist. Grab a pen and paper, relax and take notes.

    “What’s a good idea, what’s a bad idea…you gotta give both a shot”
I love this because often times we think way too much about putting out the best product from our first attempt. Stephen King has spoken on just writing. From the horrible-to-decent material you scribble down, you’ll find your way to the “good” writing.
Starting the process should be the goal.

I think the most crucial is always be open minded and contribute to your craft consistently. Even if you're not as active as maybe you once were for any reason and things might've shifted culturally, never stop learning and always be curious. Because you never know when the opportunity will present itself.

1-If you look at something and think you can do it, you probably can
2-If it excites you, and you're drawn to it, feed it
      3- Brand yourself
4-Everyone wants to create their own identity and something to attach themselves to
      5-Trauma can change your perspective
      6-Collaborate for free
7-Connect and reach out, you never know who is watching or listening
8-Put yourself out there and experiment with other mediums (imagine what that single song Futura tape would go for at. auction)
9-GETTING BAD REVIEWS is still getting reviewed, it means people are paying attention
10-One person willing to vouch for you, is all it takes to change your entire life
11-Try new mediums to market yourself

@@IDEAGENERATIONOFFICIAL I really like the enigmatic people being interviewed and the fact that you truly never know where your calling can take you. That seems to be a common theme, is, you don't have to know the way, just don't stop, just keep going. Also, the love of the craft is what carries you. This guy followed what he wanted to do. I like the part where he says he was working at the post office and still doing it. I think thats a part people don't see. they dont see musicians working two jobs or basically homeless. They don't see entrepreneurs losing ten times a day, whether its friendships, or taking on debts, or just living a destitute life until someone gambles on them or invests in them as an individual. That's a common theme; everyone was looked out for, no matter how great they were at their craft or passion, someone invested in them, whether it was family, a friend, a stranger, or someone in their industry. But the most poignant, was that he was working at the post office, like people forget how hard it is to know in your heart what you are meant for, and live in a world that is working against that.
You have to be willing to suffer and be broke to pursue something like that. The world actively works against the artist, and so, to basically have a grant, like Kid Cudi says, to do what he loves for the rest of his life, is absolutley the universe lookin out. I think there's a voice people follow, that says "yeah but... what if".. yeah im working here but im great artist or have a gift for financial literacy, so "sure, they can say no, but all I need is one person to say yes ". That seems like a. common theme. Mastering the craft, using whatever mediums available to convey your message and purpose, and pretty much having blind faith agains all logic that you can be the exception. No one knew anyone interviewed before they became successful and thought they would be where they are at. For instance, this mans family was in the fire service, but he knew he didnt want that, and after his first phase, he knew he needed a change in perspective, and he still came back to what he needed, which was his art. People forget that on top of whatever dream you are working for, you still have bills and responsibilities. So, it really is like a 24/7 thing.
All these people are obsessed like they can't get away from what they love. The musician, needs to make music, not all, but some, the artist needs to create that art. Also, don't limit yourself. You can do it all. Experiment. Some people are gifted enough and work harder than everyone. Some people are just gifted and dont work hard. Some people work hard and aren't gifted. But regardless, do whatever you're good at, even if it doesnt pay you. Be present. This man had no idea he was going to be where he was, he laughed at the idea of being in galleries, today, attending Art Basel is a dream of mine, and work like his sells for millions. His demo tape, would probably sell at auction for a lot, and the only reason he made it is because I liked hiphop culture and wanted to try.
Be willing to pay your dues, like being a booking agent. People work with people they connect with, regardless of how skilled they are. The band liked him, they gave him an opportunity that people work their entire lives for, and it wasn't even what he wanted to do, but that opened another door and gave him a bunch of other unexpected opportunities. He was just happy to be there, and his attitude about that, and his hustle, is what made people look out for him. They wanted him around. Theres a lot more, but this is just great. This guys life was anything but a straight line, despite growing up somewhat middle class. His story has a lot of components of the heroes journey, he had a lot of redirects and rebirths and wise people and pitfalls, but he just kept following that little voice that said, "you know this is where you are supposed to be". And thats a theme to, no matter where you are at any moment, you are exactly where you are suppose to be". Enjoy the process and do what you love
