Bagamoyo is a town with rich history, many historical sites and a beautiful long public sand beach. The foundation dates back to the 18th century, though it is an extension of a much older (8th century) settlement, Kaole. At the beginning of the 19th century, Bagamoyo became a trading port for slaves and ivory coming from interior places as far as Morogoro, Lake Tanganyika and Usambara. "Bwaga-Moyo" means "Lay down your Heart" in Swahili. Bagamoyo was also the first capital of German East Africa.
