  • Embark on a maritime journey like never before as we delve into the captivating world of naval history in our latest video, "Crafting a four-shift plank pattern for the lower deck:
Crafting a four-shift plank pattern for the lower deck of a majestic vessel like the Santísima Trinidad requires precision and attention to historical detail. The Santísima Trinidad, a renowned ship of the line from the 18th century, demands a design that not only aligns with the aesthetics of its era but also ensures the structural integrity necessary for a seafaring vessel.
    Historical Research:
    Refering to historical documents,
Identify and mark the centerline of the lower deck lengthwise,
Begin placing the first set of planks along the centerline, running parallel to it. Shift subsequent sets of planks to create the characteristic four-shift pattern, ensuring authenticity.
Use traditional fastening methods such as treenails or historically accurate fasteners to secure the planks to the ship's frame.
    Attention to Seam Caulking:
simulate traditional seam caulking methods using materials like cotton between planks.
    Surface Finishing:
Sand the surface to achieve a smooth finish, consistent with the craftsmanship of the era.
Create a four-shift plank pattern for the Santísima Trinidad's lower deck that pays homage to the craftsmanship of the past.

The caulking looks fantastic, as do the plank nails. How many drills did you need? ;-)

Very tedious indeed. Have you thought about brushing some blackening solution on them to age the nails a bit? Unless it might stain the deck.

Hi, I think maybe they would have stood out too much, the deck would look like it had measles, they are more subtle not so visable from a distance but show up the closer you look
