@@Maxrepfitgm For retro games? I said it. A ps2 with retroarch on it… and a crt. It’s not the most popular option, but I like it. I also use retro handhelds a lot! With custom firmware they’re a lot of fun, and almost perfect. I like the rg351 devices, the miyoo mini plus… my steam deck is full of retro games too. But the ps2 retroarch is the one that shocks me sometimes. With some tinkering you can get it to be pretty good. I wouldn’t call it practical, but if you know your way around retroarch you might make it work. And you can output to a crt so that’s a plus. You can also do it on a ps3, and get the same type of output with component, and 4:3 aspect ratio toggled.
Some ps2 games have a type of fog that looks bad on emulation. I think it’s meant to hide the low draw distance maybe. Okage comes to mind. The first time I saw that fog I was trying to adjust my graphics for a while, and the fog never left lol Ps2 games also have that empty town feeling a lot too. There were some constraints in the hardware. You can upscale some ps2 games and they look great too, however. Like some mmo games from that era that are still going have received graphics upgrades to upscale, and they’re like a modern ps2 game, and I think it’s just great.
Ps1 games look pretty good too when being upscaled. I have been playing Gran Turismo 2 latley at like 8x resolution and I would say it looks pretty good for a ps1 game.
PS2 are awesome, I play them on my Odin 2 with aethersx2 at 1080p. Played DQ8 recently and my wife though it was a modern remake. She couldn't believe it when I removed the upscaling

I do have to say though, with all of the settings that you showed in this video, changing the aspect ratio back to standard and checking the box next to "apply widescreen patches" makes the gameplay a little less stretched out in my opinion, at least for the games I play. @@Nluhv That's because not every game has a widescreen patch. You can check manually in the Patches section of Game Properties (Patches will not show in Global Properties since they're per-game)
Yeah it seemed like all of these games shown were just stretched and that’s it. Unless there’s an actual 16:9 option in the game or a widescreen patch I would bother with playing a stretched out game.
Thanks for the video. I havent gotten around to using this yet for my PS2 library. Had a PS2 slim and PS3 fat, but nice to not have to dig them out to play.

I've been using PCSX2 for the past month since I now finally have a PC capable of PS2 emulation. I've mostly just been ripping games I already own off of the physical disk rather than having to download games from shady websites. I'm reasonably satisfied with how well it runs, most of the racing games I've tried play at 60fps. The fly in the ointment game for me on PCSX2 is OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast, it has horrible slowdown which ruins the whole game for me and it seems to be a known issue with that particular game running on PCSX2. At least I still have a reasonably well-working PS2 Slim for that particular game.
@@Zippy_Zolton It probably depends on how beefy your graphics card and CPU is, I get major slowdown in many sections, usually when there are larger buildings by the side of the road (i.e. the city section of the first stage). There are also some glitches in the menu (the images of the cars don't display properly). I admit I'm running an older graphics card (NVidia GeForce GTX 1080 from 2016). It has sufficient power to play every other PS2 racing game that I've tried at 60fps with no slowdown but OutRun 2006 seems to push its limits.

Someone else with nearly the same graphics card (Nvidia GTX 1650) reported that they were also experiencing slowdown with OutRun 2006 on the PCSX2 Wiki.
Just to leave this here for anyone that wants to play at 4K: Don't use Bilinear sharp as is the main culprit for not having framerate at all at 4K. Lottes CRT filter (when combined with Bilinear sharp, anisotropic at 16x and upscaled dithering) also consumes a ton and hurts framerates.
IMO the graphics aren't really the problem, I'd say the real issue with playing PS2 games nowadays is the input lag, as 6th-gen consoles like GameCube and PS2 seem to suffer from noticeable input lag when they're played on a modern widescreen HD TV. For example, I really wanted to go back and play Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando, but that input lag seriously hindered the gameplay experience for me personally. Also trying to play F-Zero GX with input lag is dang near impossible! If whatever this thing is can fix that problem, then great.
I like using the ps2 emulator on the series s/x. The series s is a powerhouse for emulation. Kinda surprised more people havent bought it as just an emulation machine, since it can go all the way up to wii and run the games at almost 100%
While a lot of PS2 games have been remastered the majority of them aren't going to get the remaster treatment due to licensing issues or the publishers (Cough) Bandai Namco (Cough) not caring about their classic games and franchises. Emulation is a good way to play these classic games. I'm also going to be honest with the retro market pushing a lot of the prices of these games to $200+ these days I don't mind pirating them at all if the publisher isn't going to remaster them. It's not like I'm supporting the developer, which might not exist anymore, anyway so I really don't see the problem. Though if a game is remastered I will more than likely opt for that over emulation because that is usually more stable and has upgraded textures and models. I'm also liking what's going on with fan decompilations and recompilations as well. Jak and Daxter's is so much better than the release Sony put on the PSN, and I'm looking forward to Jak II and 3's decompilations progressing as well.
@@Tinfoilist 16x is the highest setting that hardware has supported for decades, there's not really a hypothetical benefit to enabling 32x if that were possible
I might give this a try. I wish I could play my PS2 Slim, but the laser is burnt out and has trouble reading most discs. At least I can use it to rip the BIOS.
I play the PCSX2 emulator and love it. However, there is a problem, not from the software. PS2 Dual Shock controlers had analog buttons (so did the PS3 controller) and many of the best games used that feature. The controllers you can buy now don't have analog buttons. So to get the most from the PCSX2 you need to find a working PS2 or PS3 controllers because they are not even made by 3rd parties, and in the PS2 case you need a USB adapter. PS3 is Bluetooth and just need to download a driver.
I love being able to play games in 4K but eventually you’ll notice that a lot of the screen based effects like glow and some texture effects completely break when set to higher resolutions as some games were only designed for 480p on a CRT TV and these effects are hard coded to only be displayed at 480p

I don't know what kind of quality you're looking for, but my PS2 looks perfectly fine on my 43 inch tv with just an HDMI adapter. Granted, it is slightly less than a 1080P tv, but still. You might want to look into expensive upscalers like the Retro Tink.
you understand this video is useless to new rom-ers right? i managed to get a bio to load the program but 3 different games wont start. they just go back to the memory menu. i know youre bound by copyright/legal things but damn are the instructions vague
NFS MW is probably not the best game to show. The PC version is better. The best was the 360 version. It had HD textures not present even on PC. But thanks to an easy mod you can download, it changes all that. Also I wonder if you can use RTX on it.

Since the RG353V doesn't really run Gen 6 games all that smoothly, I've been on the lookout for something to graduate to, so I can enjoy more recent console games from the PS2/PS3/GC/Wii/Xbox and 360 era. The other day I saw something online about a new PC called the GPD Win Mini, and I'm interested in pursuing that for my next device since it can apparently run games from each of those consoles. I'm not sure if you've heard of this before or not, but I know you read your comments so thought it would be worth a mention. If you have one, or have the means to obtain one on a promo or something, I would love to see your reaction to it, that feedback would be helpful to me in deciding what I'd want to get, in order to emulate PS2 games. Since you're the King of Emulation, I thought it may interest you if you hadn't already heard of it. Cheers!
Not sure the price of the mini pre built pc you mentioned but you can build a decent emulator rig for about $500 USD or even cheaper if you can find deals locally or on ebay. Minimum specs I'd recommend is 6 core 12 thread CPU and a 2060 at a minimum. Intel or AMD CPU either is fine but if you go with a AMD build I highly suggest a 3600 and at least 16gb of RAM at 3600mhz
Most SD games look better in clean SD resolution than they do in HD or 4K... I really don't understand why so many people want to sharpen them. The SD resolution masked that there is not much detail and if you sharpen the textures and edges, you will see how empty everything looks.
i did this install it twice, first time i had the 1.4 version. the second time i tried to completely wipe the older version. the thing is every time i launch the 1.7 it completely restarts all my settings. so if i download and setup the app there's no point cuz youll do the setup again after u close the app. idk why i get this issue i never had it with the 1.4

I got a problem. I cant fast forward or to be exactly, it doesnt go further than 116% Speed for some reason. I tried everything from the forum and what I know but nothing worked. Every game has the same problem and it's not a problem with the input and has nothing to do with vsync. Can someone help me?
better off playing in the original aspect ration or else everything looks streched out, you can apply a widescreen patch on some games but the results are hit and miss
Ahh I see your playing in a windowed mode. I think that may be my problem. I set mine to full screen and I keep having an issue where the game freezes for a few seconds randomly. It's rather anoyying
there's no single best option, things always change! and PCSX2 doesn't have that high of a barrier to entry... and if you're in the market to get a new computer you should do research to ensure you get good value for what you want to do with it. Also don't get a laptop if you aren't going to go outside with it, they're compromised for portability so you're going to hurt yourself if you get a laptop only to keep it hooked to a home setup 24/7
Don't use RetroArch unless you have to, it's only a decent AIO option for specialised hardware where setting up individual emulators is difficult. It's not fun to use on something like Windows where you can just download and run separate programs and have a better experience
I have used basic ps2 emulation before on pc and I owned the games. I just always had a heck of a time with bios dumping. I could do it but it bothered me to go on those sites. I am also the one who does 8/16 bit emulation. Go figure that but that does look like a lot of fun.
Come to think about it I haven't played very many PS2 games. Maybe I should change that. I can play the Japanese exclusive Berserk game with an English patch right? The games run at 60 FPS? That includes the 30 FPS ones right? Jak and Daxter is one of the few PS2 games that ran at 60 FPS. It also has impressive animation. It could easily pass for a PS3 title.
DS is actually the best and most fast sold over ps2 DS behind PlayStation 2 by only one million and ps2 was in production for like 12 years while DS was only like in production for 4 years
Is there a way to put a program on PS3 or PS4 to run ? I know the discs cant run. Asking for my physical copies is there a way to use that digital copy I am allwoed on those systems so I can actually play on the console.

I don't see any reported issues with that game on the wiki, it could be a niche setting you have causing a problem

I use OG PS2 hardware with the Retrotink 4K, the upscaler can deinterlace the picture with very good results

Intel Iris Xe graphics are enough to play PS2 games in 2k /16x AA. No need for a 3060 or 4k. Muddy textures are still muddy in 4k.

the games i play on the emulator gets sluggish every 3 mins oor so. i have a 4090. any idea whats causing it?
Games look a bit stretched in "widescreen". The original PS2 with some homebrew and a decent scaler (GBS-C/RT5X/RT4K) looks great to me.

I'm running into issues with the .dll files (not appearing). I'd rather not install a separate injector if i dont have to, and all the tutorials i watch dont seem to have this issue, should i just scrap the files i have and try again?

I got a problem. I cant fast forward or to be exactly, it doesnt go further than 116% Speed for some reason. I tried everything from the forum and what I know but nothing worked. Every game has the same problem and it's not a problem with the input and has nothing to do with vsync. Can someone help me?
better off playing in the original aspect ration or else everything looks streched out, you can apply a widescreen patch on some games but the results are hit and miss

Ahh I see your playing in a windowed mode. I think that may be my problem. I set mine to full screen and I keep having an issue where the game freezes for a few seconds randomly. It's rather anoyying

there's no single best option, things always change! and PCSX2 doesn't have that high of a barrier to entry... and if you're in the market to get a new computer you should do research to ensure you get good value for what you want to do with it. Also don't get a laptop if you aren't going to go outside with it, they're compromised for portability so you're going to hurt yourself if you get a laptop only to keep it hooked to a home setup 24/7
Can you use vimm lair to play games on this emulator ?
I have ps2 on retroarch but some of the games just don’t run like they do on ps2, do I have to tinker around to get it right?
Don't use RetroArch unless you have to, it's only a decent AIO option for specialised hardware where setting up individual emulators is difficult. It's not fun to use on something like Windows where you can just download and run separate programs and have a better experience
I have used basic ps2 emulation before on pc and I owned the games. I just always had a heck of a time with bios dumping. I could do it but it bothered me to go on those sites. I am also the one who does 8/16 bit emulation. Go figure that but that does look like a lot of fun.

The games run at 60 FPS? That includes the 30 FPS ones right? Jak and Daxter is one of the few PS2 games that ran at 60 FPS. It also has impressive animation. It could easily pass for a PS3 title.

Shame the widescreen option is just stretching the image and not true 16:9. Suppose you can't expect more unless each game is individually patched.
that's because he didn't enable the widescreen patch in Game Properties, it already exists for numerous titles
