Best option for wireless controllers is the 8bitdo retro receiver for the ps1/ps2 (it’s about $20 on ebay). It’s a quality product and I’ve been playing PS1 & PS2 games with my PS5 controller recently. Works perfectly!
The Brook Wingman beats the 8bitdo receiver (I have both) as it allows pressure sensitive face buttons along some other features. Couple this with a DualShock 3 and you have the ultimate controller setup. Neither PS4 og PS5 controller has pressure sensitive face buttons. This comes painfully obvious in games where this is needed (MGS2 is an example).
Blue Retro Core is an amazing accessory for the PS2. For about $15 in total you can use two wireless controllers at the same time for Player 1 and Player 2. PS3,4,5, Xbox One, Series X controllers and more. I like using the PS3 controller as it has pressure sensitive buttons like the PS2, but you can use any of those and no longer have to worry about wires.
I want to thank you for every piece of information you gave. You gave so much more than others and I appreciate. I will be definitely following your page. You even showed links to get the needed equipment.
playing on an original ps2 with a crt is unbeatable but there have been some cool innovations in the emulation space. certain games like jak and daxter have been decompiled so they can run natively on pc if you have a copy of the iso. the original ps3 also has backwards compatibility with ps2 (though this was removed from later models) which is much easier to hook up to modern displays if you already have one laying around
Gotta get a freemcboot memory card if you wanna play around with playing back ups or tinkering with resolutions and etc. I got an 8bitdo wireless adapter that plugs into the controller port and synced a dual shock 4 to it. I also use component with a component to hdmi adapter. Would love a retrotink but I’m not balling quite like that atm haha. It’s fun revisiting these classics and sharing them with my kids. And it’s so cool seeing the community do mods and cool things with these classic systems. Just watched a video about someone turning a psp into a console to connect to your tv. Simply amazing.
i saw the same video i think just now too!! (by macho nacho?) and yeah gotta love the community staying strong and keeping these old games alive✨ i’ve been hearing about these freemcboot cards for ages, maybe i needa get onto that before long. and wireless adapters?? i knew they existed but thought they were too good to be true/didnt wanna buy one and turns out its crap. always thought about going for the authentic multitap experience- but if you can seriously use a DS4 with no or next to no issues then sign me up!!!
My silver PS2 slim still works after all these years so does my PS2 fat model I bought on launch. Years ago I bought a clear shell for it so my fat PS2 is actually clear. Super grateful they both still work to this day they're both in amazing condition. I use HD retrovision component cables when I play on them 🙂
Composite doesn't give 240p on PS2, composite just gives worse image quality than component, that's it. Composite gives 480i just like component, but component can give 480p (progressive) if the game has that option
Some folks have rightly pointed out that light guns do work with some flat screen CRTs. This is true! However, they do not work with some HD CRTs, which are mostly flat screen. Another note, the iLink port isn’t needed for Time Crisis 3 - just USB!
I went from PCSX2 to buying PS2 too 😅 just feels better and I like it in my bedroom that sometimes I can just play some old games when I want.. like old times
Another option for PS2 on a modern TV is getting an OG backwards compatible PlayStation 3, they can be a bit pricey these days, I lucked out and got one for only $90 quite a few years ago, I understand now they can be a couple of hundred bucks, however they have native HDMI out and can do image smoothing to make the games look nice on a modern HDTV.
Forget the fat ps3, get a regular slim and install custom firmware on it, multiman, webman, rebug. And you can play about 70% of all PS2 games without any major issues.
Great, short video about the different ways to play PS2 in 2024. I'd love to have a good quality CRT again. Currently I am running my PS2 & PS3 via component and HDMI to my Pioneer receiver, then outputting a 1080p signal out to an mClassic, and it dramatically improved the picture quality on my OLED. Eventually I want a Retrotink 4K. Sadly, I recycled my Panasonic plasma...
Not true I have a Panasonic TAU 4:3 HD CRT with HDMI and all my light gun games work. Even time crisis 2 shows HD mode at title screen after booting via component.
I got a hyperkin hdmi adapter and hooked that with a fat ps2 and hdd to my monitor. No input lag at all really and it upscales everything to 720p and works with ps1 stuff. With an emulator or crt its a lot crisper but for a mid tier hdmi solution and works great. On tvs tho you may want game mode on with these things
i use a GBS-C on my modern flatscreen. It gets rid of input lag and it even let's me use a CRT filter for PS1 240p games. I also would rec not cheaping out on cables, I used some cheap component cables that had horrible interference. I switched to HD retrovision cables and have had zero issues. Dualshock 2 is a must, especially bc of pressure sensitive buttons.
Just buy TCL because the TV is still supported I have the 2024 TCL mini LED and it works great with the PS2 and also it works.with Nintendo Wii and the picture looks insanely good. Especially for these console that came out along time ago.
The don't go flat advise was utter nonsense: flat CRTs do work with light guns. The thing to watch out for is 100/120Hz interpolation models. Chance is bigger that a 16:9 flat model is 100Hz, but flat 4:3 ones are most of the time 50/60Hz multisystem models. But 100Hz is no problem if you DON'T play lightgun games. In fact, I dragged a B&O Avant 32 DVD home, it was 10€, and it is my dream PS1/PS2 TV. 86kg of joy. I even like it with a stretched widescreen image. Massive display, amazing 2x100W sound system and gorgeous object in your gameroom.
My AV-Receiver has Component-In and optical-in and works as Converter to the TV. PS2 fat with FreeMcBoot and 1TB hard drive. I think that‘s the best way.
I don't think any PS2 games on the USA side actually ran at 240p, they ran at 480i and all of them ran at that resolution no matter what cable you used. There are a few shooters on the Japanese PS2 market that ran in 240p. Progressive scan 480p could only be done with component or a SCART RGB cable especially wired for the OSSC pro upscale converter, I think its less than 40% though. The PS2 did output 240p when playing PS1 games, but you didn't mention that. There is a Keico PS2 HDMI dongle for LCD TV's.
PS2 FAT allows for very easy use of HDD. 1TB hdd will store almost every game, that U want. PS2 slim is left with USB storage or MX4SIO which is still in active, especially software, developement (USB is REALLY slow). Or, OFC U can go with original discs, but they start to become really expensive in some cases. And u can use wirelesly almost every PS3/PS4/PS5 controller with some additional hardware, avilable to buy almost everywhere in internet. PS2 controllers are harder to find in good condition and are becoming more expensive with each year.
Idk how many hours/days/weeks I spent replaying GTA 3 from the start on my PS2 back in high school because I had no idea I needed a new memory card when I upgraded from PS1.

Fat ps2 over slim, no contest. My childhood launch 3000 series model still works and reads everything. There are several varieties, I think 3, of slims. Some can't play certain games at all, some do. However they also scratch up your games due to a terrible ribbon cable issue.
I haven't touched a gaming console in a while. The last game I played was GTA 3 on a fat PS2. Social media and the internet destroyed my gaming passion.
I bought a CRT TV for $40 from an OfferUp seller which I use for retro gaming. I would use my PS2 or even my GameCube with it. Lately I've had my Wii hooked up to it. I even have my PS3 hooked up to it even though that's an HD console.

I prefer the original model of all gen consoles. They always looked more premium to me. Always liked the blue ps2 logo on the OG model. Slim model is convenient for traveling with but looked cheap and their appearance reflected the pricing.
Yes, you can. However, it won't give you the clear desired result. It'll just be AV quality through an HDMI. Unless of course, you use something like a framemeister, which does upscale AV image.
Fat Ps2 can be very easy to fix, I have a Sony 65" uhd 4k TV with both component and scart ports, I use ps2 on this, can't find a good crt TV, love retro gaming, I have all PlayStation from 1 to 5, my kids love the old stuff

I feel the need to bring up the fact that most copies of God of War 2 won't run on a PS2 slim model. I bought two copies of God of War 2 back in the day; and neither of them would run on the slim model. Once I got an original fat model PS2; both copies ran perfectly.
For light gun on newer tv’s use a si den light gun For HDMI up to 2k use retrogen shiny hdmi mod looks great on lg g3 tv at 4k oled oh and they have hdr on games
Thanks for posting this! I've still got an old PS2 and tried to hook it up via component to my Sony KV32F, but it seems my inputs are pooched and won't display properly /: ...might just settle for S-video.
not analog ps2 can output hd resolutions natively supports 1080i (Gran turismo 4,Valkyrie Profile 2,Jack ass the movie,Tourist Trophy) with custom mods it can upscale up to 1440p resolution
Best way to play is component cable i buy one when my hdmi broke on my ps3 .Try on ps2 and work like a charm most of games 480i but some games like soul calibur and grand turismo 4 suport 1080i . If you got 3k £ samsung tv upscale any game from 480i to 2k with perfect picture quality
i've got an old digital signage monitor that has old rca and component inputs, it looks amazing with old video games, 42 inch flatscreen lcd that doesn't look all blurry and gross. I've also got some composite to hdmi adapters but while they do "work" the image is so god awful on the other end it makes some games literally unplayable
Just a 21x ps2s most of them are with new lasers ribon cables power buttons fans pads thermals and modchiped mobo 4.0 infinity 99 and others all been cleaned inside out . There a thermal C° app for ps2 . My ps2 never ever overheat stand at 56c for pads 17 yo old . Im gonna upgrade sony pads to Gelid ultimate / extreme . I got components way better with that it got the pixel blur old av on hdmi tvs way cleaner with components and got bluetooth i play with dualshock 4 or xbox on ps2 and use fmcb / hdd extrenal or internal . Love ps2 and ps3
Last time I used a ps2 was on a crt tv it was perfect..years ago reluctantly got rid of the tv even though it was fine..on our samsung smart tv it's just way too dark..ok for dvds but not games unfortunately
Phat ps2 is best, slim scratches your discs and some games actually have a corruption issue with saving, the ps2 slim doesn’t provide enough power and will corrupt save data on ps2 memory cards. The save data is also usually corrupted. HDCRT excel with Xbox 360, ps3 and will While CRT with component is perfect for NES to Dreamcast Also look into brook adapter. Ps5 controller on ps2 is crispy
I just use a hdmi for my ps2. It has the normal back plug that goes into the ps2 and an hdmi plug on the other end. But id love to see if an upscaler exists. Sure, I can emulate. But it's the nostalgic vibes I get using regular hardware. Is the retrotink hard to use, or does it do upscales automatically?
Can anyone help me on what route to choose. I have a crt but is only composite. I tried composite on plasma and it is the worst resolution I ever tried. Is using a component cable on a plasma tv better than using a ps2 to hdmi converter? How big is the difference? Thanks

If you want to fetch an old plasma, only go out for Panasonic. Considering these are all in sub 30€ territory in 2024, don't pay more, only go out for the best. And never touch an LG. They stink. Super glare screens, massive banding problems, very low built quality.
@@josedeleon1923 As I said, considering these are near free nowadays, get the best ones: Panasonics. I heard Pioneer is good too, but I never see those.
"Most games can output at 480p." No. No they can not. Very few games could but the standard output res for a PS2 is 480i. Even with the composite cable. The S-video and Component cable cleans the image up separate ways with the component separating colors to be more defined. All the same resolution. Granted, component cables could output different resolutions. Backtracking on the 480i, the PS1 outputs in 240p and the PS2 outputs PS1 games in 480i. Purists out there gravitate to the PS1 for native resolution.
Why did he say PC Stuff like that? lol The disdaiiin. I mess with emulators, but I also have consoles too. Collecting physical is just more expensive, takes up space, and you have to clean stuff sometimes or even repairr too. It's a convenience thing mostly i think. My N64 stopped working and it set me on a path lol I like that on the emulators the games are upscaled to 1080p and a lot of bugs in the games are fixed, you can save any time, and change your button inputs nstuff. Its just so nice and easy to play. Never getting rid of the consoles I do have though.
Tonnes of missing information here. No mention of scart in puts. No mention of Backwards compatible PS3'S Chipped version and unchipped versions. No mention of HDMI mods. Needs to be a much deeper dive to get to the bottom of the question. What actually is the best way to play PS2 games in 2024. I don't know myself and am looking for the answer but I can't find the truth and so many people have different answers.
@@Kenno10rapid as I mentioned this focused on the physical PS2 consoles - certainly there’s other ways! Maybe a good idea to do a deeper dive in another video!
@BrianFrey1 I am truly looking for the answer to this elusive question. There are quite a few options and it's made the whole topic conveluted. Taking an upscaler out of equation because let's assume you will be integrating one regardless of the initial setup what would be best. PS3 has inbuilt Smoothing options which apparently only has any benefit at Res below 720p but is it better than an HDMI modded PS2 in an oled. I have a CRT (Still working on making sure it's working, waiting on a remote) but long term unless you want to play light fun games that's going to be inconvenient because of size etc and most people wouldn't be able to lay their hands on one either, or a good Plasma TV so for my purposes I am assuming the best set up will be an OLED as the other options are too niche. Does The BC PS3 (unchipped only) actually have any benefit over and HDMI modded FAT PS2 and if so what is it. And this is not even thinking about adding homebrew that could help on either console either. In a perfect world I would like to get rid of the BC PS3 and CRT TV and go over to an HDMI modded PS2 but if I wanted to do this would I lose out on anything. I really don't know I've asked about, searched about and I'm still scratching my head about what I should do.

@@ar-game-test It could be, but I haven't had any issue so far. I have bought some other used units, one of them had a defective receiver, indeed. But anyway, those are surelly much better than any crap controllers on amazon
The 8bit wireless adapter for the ps2 is great. can pair ps4 or ps5 controllers to it
My Panasonic TV from 2021 still has component inputs. I'm using it for my wii.
I feel the need to bring up the fact that most copies of God of War 2 won't run on a PS2 slim model. I bought two copies of God of War 2 back in the day; and neither of them would run on the slim model. Once I got an original fat model PS2; both copies ran perfectly.
@@nickparsons337 interesting!
@@BrianFrey1 Yeah, apparently it has to do with GOW 2 being a dual layered disc that caused the issue with the slim model not being able to run it.
@@nickparsons337 OG GOW >>
@@BrianFrey1 I don't quite follow what you mean. Care to elaborate?
@@nickparsons337 the original God of War games were so good!
For light gun on newer tv’s use a si den light gun
For HDMI up to 2k use retrogen shiny hdmi mod looks great on lg g3 tv at 4k oled oh and they have hdr on games
Still have the ps2
Thankfully my flat-screen TVs have component and composite.
The wireless PS2 controller didn't work on my Shinobi and Nightshade PS2 games
The Rad2x cables are a decently priced middle ground for hdmi out
I don’t know if you mentioned in the video but does size of the tv matter?
For CRT any size is good really but for LED/HDTV Ive noticed at 32" and larger the image looks pretty bad and a upscaler is recommended
Now im learning soldering just for ps2 and modded consoles
Got the slim and love it. I just want my systems to be more compact so I usually like the slim versions.
What brand is your sweater that you are having on in this video? I like it. :)
Nice video! How many inches is your plasma tv?
Last time I used a ps2 was on a crt tv it was perfect..years ago reluctantly got rid of the tv even though it was fine..on our samsung smart tv it's just way too dark..ok for dvds but not games unfortunately
Its hard find ps 2 dvd, thats why i use ps2 mcboot hdd external, but people said to me buy ps2 matrix hdd internal
Cheap hisense tvs still have component in and av in. Not saying it looks perfect but it's definitely playable with component
very good video! should i sell my fat for a slim?
the fat PS3 can do the same thing with the PS logo in case anyone didn't know and was wondering
Mine ps2 slim getting rust what should i do? 😅
I got a 2011 24 ich LG tv with component inputs
Phat ps2 is best, slim scratches your discs and some games actually have a corruption issue with saving, the ps2 slim doesn’t provide enough power and will corrupt save data on ps2 memory cards. The save data is also usually corrupted.
HDCRT excel with Xbox 360, ps3 and will
While CRT with component is perfect for NES to Dreamcast
Also look into brook adapter. Ps5 controller on ps2 is crispy
That slim disc tray failure is crazy though.
Will they play on these days flatscreens idk if they still have to color cords in the back of the new tv
I got my AV to HDMI upscaler from amazon pretty cheap.
Do light guns work on plasma TVs?
I just use a hdmi for my ps2. It has the normal back plug that goes into the ps2 and an hdmi plug on the other end. But id love to see if an upscaler exists. Sure, I can emulate. But it's the nostalgic vibes I get using regular hardware. Is the retrotink hard to use, or does it do upscales automatically?
I have the problem play call of duty 3 on flat tv 60hz.. The frame rate going down and slow..
I use an ossc but eventually I will get a retrotink
I love the 007 games night fire rouge Goldeneye
my 70inch 2019 LG TV has component support
@@ArdaU nice!!!
I have been playing my systems on a crt . But I see the "PlayStation TV" sometimes online. Any good?
Can anyone help me on what route to choose. I have a crt but is only composite. I tried composite on plasma and it is the worst resolution I ever tried. Is using a component cable on a plasma tv better than using a ps2 to hdmi converter? How big is the difference? Thanks

Do you have a video testing the plasma?
If you want to fetch an old plasma, only go out for Panasonic. Considering these are all in sub 30€ territory in 2024, don't pay more, only go out for the best. And never touch an LG. They stink. Super glare screens, massive banding problems, very low built quality.
@@lovemadeinjapan What about Samsung?
@@josedeleon1923 As I said, considering these are near free nowadays, get the best ones: Panasonics. I heard Pioneer is good too, but I never see those.
Tip if you want to buy to mod avoid 90000 models
"Most games can output at 480p."
No.
I just wanna play Scarface again 😭😭😭
arguably the best gaming library of all time? I dont think anyone is arguing lol
I was happy I got the getaway free reservoir dogs rise to honor and enter the matrix for now no ps2 hotels usually have old tvs
I say 3 the ps2 fat and slim but the ps3 launch mod
Why did he say PC Stuff like that? lol The disdaiiin.
I mess with emulators, but I also have consoles too. Collecting physical is just more expensive, takes up space, and you have to clean stuff sometimes or even repairr too. It's a convenience thing mostly i think. My N64 stopped working and it set me on a path lol
I like that on the emulators the games are upscaled to 1080p and a lot of bugs in the games are fixed, you can save any time, and change your button inputs nstuff.
On a series X.
thanks
Phat PS2 with Component Cables, a HDD and OPL.
I have two PS twos because one of mine is about to die
You forgot, the ps3 way. HDMI on flatscreen.
whys this guy condescending about using a retrotink
