In Cleveland, the old Indians sold out every opening day at Municipal Stadium, on the lake with over 70,000 fans attending. Tribe fans were loyal, and loved the Indians. Gotta add that not that long ago, a Tribe ticket at Jacobs Field was tough to get. Can't remember how many consecutive home games were sold out in a row. Talk about killing the "Golden Goose".
I think a homeless MLB team that just spent its 81 home games touring Minor League ballparks could be a moneymaker. Or even a regional team that had 4 minor league parks as its home fields. It's tough to fill a park for 81 games in a small or mid size market, but 20 games in a small market makes them each a big deal.
That would never fly because of broadcast rights. It won't matter if you're packing an 8,000 seat stadium in Amarillo if it costs you $40m a year in regional TV revenue. There would also be the matter of finding enough minor league parks that meet MLB requirements. Even Sacramento has a bunch of work to do and their stadium is top of the line by minor league standards.

They’ve been good but they don’t have a player that attracts fans. I don’t think a casual baseball fan can name 5 players on the Rays. Their philosophy to baseball, while it’s good, also hurts their attendance. I’ve also been to the trop and it’s not a great fan experience, I’d rather just watch their games on TV.
I don't believe for a second the Rockies "sold out" their home opener. The park was half-full and tickets were easily available at the walk-up window right before the game from what the news channels were showing. The owners couldn't give less of a crap, as long as that revenue sharing money keeps pouring in, they'll keep running out a glorified AAA team and embarrassing the league.
I may have said this on another video, but they did win the World Series in 97 and 03, not to mention those two wins came within their first 10 years. So it’s not like they have never had big time success or support.
Maybe I’m just old fashioned, but I find nothing appealing about watching baseball inside. I’m not saying that’s TB’s only issue, but I feel like it could be a contributing factor. At least retractable stadiums have a chance at being open.
The biggest issue is where it’s located. It’s dead in the center of a drug infested neighborhood with homeless all over the streets and st Pete does not give a fuck about baseball. They need to move to tampa
I think it was DG that mentioned this in a previous video, but in places like Miami (chance of rain) and Arizona (heat) you only end up getting a handful of games each season where the roof can actually be open. I’d say the fact they haven’t won a World Series in over 75 years shows what a massive ownership issue they have. At least IMO Granted they should’ve won in ‘97 and maybe even 2016 (albeit I was satisfied the Cubs won that year as they waited 108 years for that moment).
I heard recently from some online board that even if the Tampa Bay Rays were to build a new stadium, it would sit on land close to the current one. The location is already horrible and hard to get to so I can't see much of an improvement. With the way Tampa, St Pete and Clearwater are spread out, not to mention Sarasota and Bradenton to the south, most of the attendees spend the bulk of their time on bridges. Yet, with or without a new stadium, Miami has proven that new stadiums don't guarantee crowds. It's Florida. Maybe consideration should be given to Jacksonville. Smaller city, yes but not too much different in size than Cincinnati. Stay tuned.
Until the Lightning and Panters start to lose. Florida and Arizona, where I've lived for 19 years, are too transient. There is not a long term commitment. As far as the A's. I wouldn't go either in protest. And that's my team (east Bay native).
@@SteveP19 Both teams have been around long enough to have established fanbases. Thats not happening good or bad. The transient argument only works for baseball.
This is not news. These seeds were planted by MLB starting in the '80s. Places that have no business having teams like Miami and Tampa would draw more people to watch the NFL Draft in these ballparks. At the end of the day, "fans" get to decide if these games are worth their time/money/attention. The people have spoken ...
I'm not sure Orlando would sell all that well because most of the games would be in peak tourist season when most of the locals would be working and most of the tourists would be tied up at the theme parks all day spending their money and energy. If you're a parent dropping all that cash at Disney World are you really going to want to pay what it costs for a family of 4 to attend an MLB game as well? The Magic do alright but they have local support during the slower tourism months.
At least they won two World Series in their first 10 years. 5 other teams wish they had at least one (especially the Padres, Brewers, and Mariners who are decades older and never won)
DG, if the Rays get their new stadium they WILL NOT sell out games. Maybe for a week or two if that. New stadiums come with higher prices. Rays have some cheap ticket in some areas. Rays depend on walk up traffic to a high degree. Without Corporate support and those employees it is hard to fill a stadium in St. Pete. If you take out the rich in Florida, it is basically a low middle class to poor state. One of the main reason Corporations move to this state is tax benefits and they can lower new employees salaries.
I agree with everything except your overall economic assessment of Florida as a state. There’s a real, established middle class in that state especially residing in the Tampa and Miami metros. Whether that middle class wants to buy Rays tickets is a good question, but Florida is not as simple as being haves and have nots

The area around Tropicana Field is simply not safe and it sits in St. Petersburg which is far from downtown Tampa Bay. And yet the Rays are planning to build a new stadium (finally) in the same area.
The A’s and Marlins get people in their stadium when they’re good. The Rays on the other hand have no market. In 2021 the Rays were the #1 seed and couldn’t come close to filling that dome for a playoff series.
Is there a chance that the ticket prices regardless of seat location just don't justify all the other expenses of going to a game? Here in NYC, as I understand it, parking costs at the stadiums are something like $40 or $50. I'm not gonna harp on the cost of food and booze, but it too has increased. Just because the teams announce partnerships for local joints doesn't mean folks are gonna come to the games. And another thing: sure watching a game at home and complaining about the time it takes is one thing, but sitting in a stadium watching the game, well, it was nice to have to stare at home plate all day long to see what's going on because of the bloody pitch clock forcing a new pitch every 15 or 20 seconds. There's barely enough time to update your scorecard before the next pitch is thrown. And finally, maybe more and more people are no longer fans and just don't gaf.
I think there is a need for baseball in Florida and there is an interest I mean we have spring traning down here and people come from all over to watch it. I understand the marlins and rays situation the marlins suck they have for a while now but the rays have been on and off 2020 they went to the World Series. The rays up until recently have always usually made it to the playoffs but sadly choke what people don’t realize is most people watch it on tv I know servers pepole that prefer to watch the games on tv then to go to the stadium. I also don’t think the rays will move but I can see a new stadium and think if st pete can afford it it might bring more fans to games instead of watching it on tv. I think it is a bit harsh comparing the rays to Oakland and Miami if those two teams didn’t suck they probably would get fans like how Tampa does Tampa is the only team that can do what they do by getting cheap players and turning them into pretty decent or good players I mean there first 14 games or so they went undefeated last season.
As a Miami native. People need to stop saying there’s little demand and blaming fans saying we don’t care. Every year Miami marlins Tv ratings are top half of the league. The stadium is in a terrible area with terrible traffic getting there. Paid by local tax payers who are still angry at the team ; resulting in higher cost of living. Many locals refuse to give money to Marlin ownership. Especially after the team said, if the stadium is built with taxpayer money. We can have a better product on the field… That changed immediately, we traded yellich, JT relmuto, Stanton, you name it. Their gone. US locals got duped. We finally had a playoff bound team with Kim Ng. Now Kim Ng is gone.. this team does whatever it can to not pay anyone. Meanwhile let’s look at the team…. We have an owner who isn’t even a billionaire.. poorest owner in baseball. how’s bruce Sherman an owner!? How’d it even get approved following Jeters investment team.?!.. we won’t invest in our in the field product and fans aren’t going to show up to a crap team. For what it’s worth, marlins haven’t been the same team since Jose Fernandez died. Last year, we had flashes of fun. Look at the Florida panthers and Miami dolphins. They aren’t last in the league in attendance.. it’s the area, and product resulting in poor ticket sales.
The major issue with the Marlins is that Jeffrey Loria lied to get the new stadium and then betrayed the fanbase the year after it was built by gutting the team, and then Bruce Sherman did exactly the same thing and gutted the team so that it would be a profitable team from revenue sharing why putting a minor league product on the field.
You have to remember that opening day is in the middle of the week. People have jobs and might not have the time to attend opening day. You act like the Rays are in trouble, although they have a talented team and it's just the beginning of the season. The Marlins were just 5,000 people short of selling out. They still had a decent turnout.
Poor marketing, poor ownership & lack of a solid fan base in Florida. Also: Baseball played in domes is depressing (more so in the "Sunshine State"). Ernie Banks once said: "It's a great day for a ball game; let's play two!" The game is meant to be played outdoors (weather permitting of course😊).
Maybe they should just move opening day, like they did the All-Star game. Just make up some BS, it doesn’t matter if it’s true or not. That would solve this
@@24knixjajr86 and i said last year in the playoffs. unlike you i dont think ok attendance numbers in the handful of games so far this season mean they don’t have an attendance issue anymore lol
We know about Oakland A's and their issues with the city of Oakland. The Miami Marlins issues aren't just the team being mediocre to bad in the years after their last World Series title run. The previous owners lied to the community about the boost to the local economy that a new stadium would bring, and this blew up in their faces when it didn't happen. The Tampa Rays are stuck at Tropicana because the city of Saint Petersburg will not allow them to break their lease, and they will fight the MLB to keep the team there even if the demand is not. The Rays only have a few options in the State of Florida, and that is to move to Tampa proper or move to Orlando.
Watching a home opener in Minnesota, you freeze your ass off. I think the Twins first 10 games should be away games. Twins do well if the team is doing well.
Toronto took seats out as part of their renovations. Now, ticket prices have gone up quite a bit. I used to sit in an area that cost $36, now that area costs $85

Marlins (especially the fans) still have it better than the other five teams who have never won a World Series. A few of them have even been around much longer than the Marlins (Padres, Brewers, and Mariners) around 50 years.
As a Floridian, I’ve never understood the apathy because there are lots of baseball fans here in south Florida, but if the Heat or dolphins were managed like the marlins then they wouldn’t sell out either
Cleveland always had an attendance issue, but it was still decent. Once they went woke and turned to the guardians you almost can’t ignore it now. It’s horrendous.

Interesting! Thanks for thinking outside of the box.
@@shaunnichols1743 broadcast rights are a mess in MLB. But the savannah bananas prove that you don’t need a top notch stadium to sell tickets. They’re proving that connection with fans is what sells tickets
@@randy7928 I love me some Bananaball, but they are a LONG way away from the finances of an MLB team. The stadium issue isn't a matter of selling tickets, it's what MLB regulations require in order to host its games. In addition to clubhouse and practice facilities, there are things like media box capacity, lighting and camera placement requirements, and the ability to host multiple broadcast trucks on site. Few if any minor league parks meet those requirements.
Just what every MLB player is gonna wanna sign up for. Hey wanna not have a real home for 8 months and play in front of shitty crowds and not have proper training facilities?

I’ve also been to the trop and it’s not a great fan experience, I’d rather just watch their games on TV.
I don't believe for a second the Rockies "sold out" their home opener. The park was half-full and tickets were easily available at the walk-up window right before the game from what the news channels were showing. The owners couldn't give less of a crap, as long as that revenue sharing money keeps pouring in, they'll keep running out a glorified AAA team and embarrassing the league.

Better to just have a translucent roof and lots of windows that can be opened or closed faster.

I’d say the fact they haven’t won a World Series in over 75 years shows what a massive ownership issue they have. At least IMO
Granted they should’ve won in ‘97 and maybe even 2016 (albeit I was satisfied the Cubs won that year as they waited 108 years for that moment).
With how populated Miami is they still can’t sell it out? Orlando won’t solve anything either just a losing battle with other attractions in the area.
That is my guess about Orlando and that of many well-informed people.
Stay tuned.
Meanwhile only a 6.5 hr drive north of Tampa you have the Braves, always a big crowd and fun place to catch a game.

Florida is definitely good for hockey as well. Most of their games, whether the Lightning, or the Panthers, sell out regularly.
Until the Lightning and Panters start to lose. Florida and Arizona, where I've lived for 19 years, are too transient. There is not a long term commitment. As far as the A's. I wouldn't go either in protest. And that's my team (east Bay native).

I was at the Twins opener and can confirm if you were not in the sun, it was cold but come, July it will be a packed house as long as we win…
It wouldn't surprise me if 1/4 people at the Rays season opener were there to see the Blue Jays.
How are the Royals so close to the Ray in attendance. Come on KC. You love Kauffman so much, go to the games.
Kissimmee has given up on Baseball
If Rays opener plays Yankees or red sox, they possibly can sell out stadium since there are lots of Yankees fans and red sox fans at the game. lol
The Marlins have been rebuilding for the last 21 years. MLB is ok with that.
At least they won two World Series in their first 10 years.
5 other teams wish they had at least one (especially the Padres, Brewers, and Mariners who are decades older and never won)
The upper deck tarp says "Home of the Athletics" on it and the owner is too cheap to buy a new one.

Cleveland should've traded Bieber. I was expecting them to all offseason. In all honesty they should trade J-Ram for an absolute haul. They keep trying to thread the needle between contending whille not spending any money but they won't ever actually contend in the playoffs that way I don't think. Just do what the Rays do and trade guys when they are at peak value to collect as many top prospects as possible. If you do that long enough and are good at it you can eventually build a team full of stud prospects lile the Orioles have.
Colorado had to sell pricey tickets for $30 off game day to possibly have a sellout. The numbers might be fudged. The only reason they draw anybody is tourists.

@@edlawn5481 Sternberg is demanding at least half a billion dollars in public funding, and Tampa can't offer more than $100 mil.
the A's had a boycott for the opening day in the Parking Lot..the FANS are staying away on purpose. . .we don't want to put our $$ in Fisher's rat claws..
Pittsburgh didn't not sell out their home opener this year. Their attendance is going to keep dropping as their so called hot start against mediocre teams Miami and Washington. They have now lost two in a row and are in danger of going on a big losing streak. Pittsburgh is just a bad team with a bad owner and are stuck. They can't move bug probably should
The trop is one of the worst stadiums in the league. I believe after the rays get their new stadium the fans will start coming.
Ray's owner can warn that if they don't get a new stadium, they will move to Vegas.
St. Pete is willing to give them a new stadium, but that won't improve attendance. Tampa can't and won't regardless of threats. Orlando would, but who knows whether there would be adequate attendance.
Does he not know the A’s are going there?
I doubt Vegas could support *two* MLB teams
@@RB01.10 It's a joke. Back when L.A. didn't have a football team, the threat of a team relocating to L.A. if they don't get a stadium was the biggest scam the NFL pull on the tax payers. So the Ray's can say if we don't get a new stadium we will move to XXX. The A's move will be a disaster if they don't get enough fans in the first few years. The A's ownership thinks that there are A's fans everywhere like the Raiders and will show up. They have two completely different fan base. Once the novelty of the A's in Vegas disappears, then they are back where they started.
Move the rays to Nashville already
Oh maybe dont charge so much for parking, concessions? Why should one beer cost as much as entire 12 pack? One hotdog costs more than an entire 8 pack and buns? They are greedy, greedy greedy! I feel so bad for these people making millions of dollars!
Why not combine the Rays, Marlins & A’s into one team that gets relocated to Vegas? At least then you have a halfway decent team.
I believe That the Miami Marlins stadium will soon become the New Stadium of the Miami Hurricanes Football team
You have a stadium deal with it ok.
