Imagine the confidence of this woman that during the 80s and 90s she let her LONG hair gray naturally instead of trying to pursue a look of "youth" and became a silver fox. She is comfortable in her voice AND her appearance! Look her up to see that. It was a radical decision by society's standards at the time!
I know that you have listened to Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, and now EmmyLou Harris. But you must hear how those three combined their voices in the late 80s to become "The Trio". They took their talents to another level by teaming up. They genuinely enjoy exploring music together AND each other's company. You will not regret listening to all three as The Trio!

My family and I saw Emmylou at an outdoor concert in Oregon a couple of decades ago. She and her Hot Band rocked it out for two and a half hours in the sizzling sun without slowing down. By the time she'd done her final encore, everybody in the family -- from 15 years old to 86 -- agreed it was the best concert we'd ever seen. She was an amazing entertainer. And every time I hear her voice, I think of the sad saga of Gram Parsons.

She is considered the Queen of Country. Boulder to Birmingham" is a song written by Emmylou Harris and Bill Danoff which first appeared on Harris's 1975 album Pieces of the Sky. It has served as something of a signature tune for the artist and recounts her feelings of grief in the years following the death of country rock star and mentor Gram Parsons. This song is a definitely worth a listen.

I heard my first Emmy song on my friend's car cassette player back in the early 1970's. He had just purchased her album Elite Hotel earlier in the day. The song was "Wheels" written by Gram Parsons (the so called father of country rock) and Chris Hillman (bass player of the Byrds). Note that Emmy was good friends with the great Linda Ronstadt. The two singers eventually cut 2 albums with Dolly Parton that were big sellers in the late 1980's. Thanks for reacting to Emmylou; she has done many more songs that you could react to.

Sebs, if you don't listen to her sing "Tulsa Queen" you will have missed a transcendent experience. Other great suggestions: "Two More Bottles of Wine", "Leaving Louisiana in the Broad Daylight", "Queen of the Silver Dollar", "Boulder to Birmingham", "Red Dirt Girl", "Guitar Town", "Across the Great Divide"... the list is almost endless.

I saw Emmylou in March and she still sounds amazing! She doesn't need to sing loudly to create a beautiful sound! Townes Van Zandt wrote another song that Emmylou covered called "If I Needed You" and Emmylou duets with Don Williams on that song. A song that Emmylou wrote herself that's powerful is "Boulder to Birmingham" about Gram Parsons. There's also "C'est La Vie" and "Born to Run" and "Another Lonesome Morning." There is no bad Emmylou song!

Seriously - she is good enough to sing with Dolly P & Linda R on 3 albums know as "The Trio" - she has 14 Grammy Awards, three CMA Awards, and four Americana Awards - 25 albums & is in County Hall of Fame - her career spans 40 years!!!!! She is a treasure in both country, folk, pop & even some bluegrass!! This originally a Willie Nelson/Merle Haggard record written by the legendary T VanZant!! Her song "Boulder to Birmingham" is my fav & still makes me cry ~~ as does her "Quarter Moon In a 10 Cent Town" which was my mantra after my divorce & gave me the kind of strength that comes from great music!!!! She is said to not have been satisfied with the results but she sounds fantastic on those album tracks. You might also want to listen to her duet work with Mark Knopfler (that guy from Dire Straits) showing her later work and also like others have said below, in the two albums made with Dolly Parton and Linda Rondstat, Trio and Trio two. I first saw her doing a duet with Bob Dylan of all people. He allowed her to do the instrumental
part on her banjo and she blew me away.
The media accused them of having an affair but they denied it. Emmylou does do solos but
she prefers doing duets because she said that was the way she was raised. Everyone in her
family played some instrument. Before records and even the radio, the people in the rural
areas had to make their own music.
With these old time artists there is no vanity as with the modern trash which is more glitz
and glitter than substance. To entertain all you need is a good story to a song, accompaniment
and a singer who feels every word. The song is their way of sharing a gift.

The late 60's/70's gave us Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Dusty Springfield, Joni Mitchell, Rita Coolidge, Stevie Nicks, Jennifer Warnes, Bette Midler, Dionne Warwick, Aretha Franklin, Carole King, Diana Ross, Dolly Parton, Laura Nyro, and other female artists I'm forgetting. So much talent and originality. Artists of that era didn't all sound alike. These days, music is corporate. It's more about product and less about artistry.

She is Great. Emma Lou Harris had some nice music. Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard sang this son with a video as well.

Saw her at the Zoo Amphitheater in OKC, Ok in 1980, Ricky Skaggs was playing mandolin in her backup band. Listen to Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson do the same song. I believe that is Rodney Crowell, another country legend, on the acoustic guitar.

The artist to her right playing acoustic guitar and singing harmony vocals is Rodney Crowell, a key member of her Hot Band. In a career spanning 50 years, Rodney enjoyed success as a successful singer/songwriter performing with EmmyLou Harris, Rosanne Cash (Johnny’s daughter and Rodney’s ex-wife), and as a solo artist. Here’s a wonderful video/remake of one of his hits “Leaving Louisiana in the Broad Daylight”: ruclips.net/video/h318mN87v8Q/видео.htmlsi=gRU7Yb516prl1oLa

Well, now you’ve heard of the queen. NOBODY embodies the combination of folk/rock/country/soul/blues like miss EmmyLou. It’s been said that every once in awhile, country music has to get back to EmmyLou Harris. Her voice on a song by Townes Van Zandt? What’s not to love?

Thank you so much for recognizing that past generations of wonen displayed class and pride, unlike some that we see now. Back in the day it wasn't necessary for a woman to use sex, being scantily dressed or twerking to be someone that can be respected for their talent. Much appreciated!!

Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town. Making Believe. Blue Kentucky Girl. Rose of Cimmaron. Sweet Dreams. want me to keep going? Gulf Coast Highway w/Willie Nelson. (Also, listen to Willie and Merle's Pancho & Lefty--video). Wild Montana Skies, John Denver with Emmylou. If I Needed You, duet w/Don Williams. Sorrow in the Wind. I Still Miss Someone. . . . . . I think it was Making Believe, and it was a long time ago. She sang harmony and background vocals on a couple of albums by a guy named Jonathan Edwards. You absolutely need to hear Evangelina, (written by Hoyt Axton). She sang with Gram Parsons before his death.

The songs original singer was Townes Van Zandt. Also covered by Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson was a really good version of it, too.

In the 70s a rock station might play Emmylou's version of "Easy from Now On" followed ten minutes later by Deep Purple or Frank Zappa.

I’m a life long Emmylou fan. The first song I heard was Boulder to Birmingham. You need to hear “Born to Run” to hear her range of styles__also listen to the Trio albums with Linda Ronstadt and Dolly Parton .
