- I decided all the footage in this episode should be made with the OM systems OM-1 and the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 150-400mm F4.5 TC1.25x IS Pro to try out hybrid shooting with this system. Watch the episode to see how it went and get my opinion at the end.

there is nothing wrong with the photos you showed us. but also I like my Canon R3 with the RF 100-500 with the 1.4 extender. the images that the canon delivers are more than good without post-processing. so no Olympus OM-1 camera for me at the moment either. also not for next to my canon camera equipment.. Nice video and photo’s 👍
Thank you 😁 appreciate your comment 🙏🏻
I really can`t see any major downsides to the OM1. And in combination with this lens you won`t find anything better.Btw: "You marry the lens, you date the camera".😂
It is really good for sure 👍🏻😁 haha good quote 🤣 so true
@@DennisJacobsenWildlife Another tip: Try the digital converter. Since you get a 20MP Jep. Set the sharpening in the camera to -1 and the result is amazing.
@@richardfink7666 Thanks for the tip Richard 😁👍
Wonderful video 👍
Thank you 😁 finally got the time to really test the hybrid shooting with this gear 📷📽
I remember growing up. All us kids around lake Hornborna were forced to go on school trips to watch these cranes dancing :)
Haha and now its a BIG spectacle for us birdnerds 🤣 its a beautiful place, not a bad place to grow up 👍🏻😁
I do agree with you Dennis about OM-1 AF could be improved as it is not at the level of A1 in term of perfect focus consistency. I have never shot with A1. But from what I have seen, once A1 locks on, it never let go. The advantage I have seen with OM-1 is that it can lock on to the subject much faster. This make shooting very difficult fast moving subject or sudden moves more possible. Anyhow, I do video from time to time and OM-1 needs a lot of works to get anywhere near many others.
Thank you for your comment 😀 yes the video AF needs some improvement, especially with long lenses 🤔
Congratulations Dennis great video 👍
Thank you :) :)
Awesome video! You captured some beautiful images
Thanks Freeman :) its a great place to get some great footage
Very enjoyable video. The first still picture was remarkably sharp at 1/200th of a second. Goes on to illustrate your panning technique I guess. The close up of the Crane at 4:45min'ish is just superb! When You say the focus tends to slip when taking pictures of birds in flight, what percentage do You get pin sharp in the series of pictures?
Thank you 🙏🏻😀 appreciated 😀 hmm its hard to say, diden’t test or messured .. but you have to shoot plenty to be sure and thats a shame .. because when it hits the mark they are super sharp and detailed .. i think Mike Lane did a episode with this topic 🤔
Version 1.5 firmware issued in mid-May probably postdates this video. One of the changes is: "enhanced stability of AF operation when shooting video".
Thanks for your comment 😀 yes this was shoot om FW 1.4 and i did update after and it is better with 1.5 for sure!
Awesome video. Great place too. Don’t sell your 600/4 even if you plan to switch
I think i keep noth sets for now 😁 love to shoot with both and do pick up the A1 and GM600 if i really need the best performance .. but that said i would be perfectly happy with the OM set only .. great performance
Stunning photos and awasome video. Congrats and love your camping car.
Thank you 😁 appreciated
Impresionante lugar Dennis, aquí en España cambien tenemos buenas concentraciones de Grullas como por ejemplo Gallocanta.
Yes i know you have many Cranes in Spain, is the the ones migrating from Scandinavia?
Great video as always!
This year (yesterday) I went to the Pulken the first time. After going to Hornborga for a few years (also in the hides) I found this closer location pretty ok.
The cranes are a bit closer to the people than in Hornborga (they come 30 m close to the observation tower), but as there is no hides, it is impossible to get those closeup shots one could get from the hide. One downside is that the direction of the sunrise is not as good as in Hornborga, where one can shoot orange sky with the flying birds from the church.
So the two sites have slightly different possibilities, but I think it is worth to visit the closer location more frequently - at least for me.
Thank you Tamas :) appreciate your advice to the locations
Excellent set of shots and great quality video Thanks for sharing.
Thanks 👍🏻😁
Hi Dennis. I'm a long-time Olympus/OM user and would be interested in what settings have you been using. Subject recognition? S-AF? C-AF? C-AF+TR? SH2?
C-AF with and without bird recognition in photomode and tried different settings for sensetivity .. in video i also tried different settings with and witout TR and bird recognition. I think with many birds in the frame i like it best without recog. and for video i got best results with C-AF and no TR .. it was all over the place and couldent hold on to one target 📽
@@DennisJacobsenWildlife Hi Dennis. If the camera is set to take advantage of subject recognition, then use C-AF, not C-AF + TR. And the other way around. As you write if there are many subjects in the frame then C-AF + TR without subject recognition is probably better.
Lovely stills and footage. It's a location I have on my list to visit.
Thank you 😁 i think its mid march to mid april you can experience this gathering at Lake Hornborga 📽📷👍🏻
Great pics and footage. Thanks for sharing!!
Thank you Todd :) glad you liked it
If you have just one set to pick, Dennis.. which would be your take? Sony a1 paired with the 200-600 or the OM-1 with the 150-400?
I have borrowed a 200-600 and are going to do a side by side comparision soon and share here on RUclips 🙂 the 200-600 i had i was not impressed by for birds unless they where on close to medium range. So before i test another copy of the lens i would say the OM set but if you ask me what camera, i would choose the A1 unless OM systems can do some improvements on the AF 🙂 just remember this is my opinion .. others may disagree 🙃
@@DennisJacobsenWildlife Thank you Dennis for your quick answer 👍😀… would be really nice to do an in-depth review indeed. All so on reach with the build in teleconverter and maybe the 1,4x from Sony when you can get your hands on that one too…would be nice … P.s it is very hard to buy the Olympus lens here in Holland, they are hardly available. Keep on the good work, Dennis
@@ronschuddeboomdigiscoping3693 Thanks Ron 😁
Lovely footage!
Thank you 😁 appreciated 🙏🏻
Totally agree re. the OM-1 focussing. I’ve had mine about. 6 months and have been quite disappointed with it, so just bought a used A1 and will switch to Sony for wildlife. I already used Sony for a while in parallel with Olympus.
Of course Olympus/Om has its strengths, but CAF is not one of them.
I get the shoots with this system its just to bad i need to fire of so many photos to be sure i have the perfect shoots. But i still think it delivers beautiful results .. more consitency in AF in both photo and video and its a SUPER combo 📽📷😁
In all fairness, you should except a flag-ship camera costing 3x to be a bit better :). I am definitely not disappointed with the OM-1, even with the much cheaper 100-400.I hope that they will improve the FW of course. Meanwhile, luckily it does shoot very fast (faster than A1 IIRC), so you should end up still with a lot of keepers. To be fair, I have not used it much for video yet.
@@janwedek maybe so, but also in fairness many reviewers are frankly lying about its performance and it is OM’s flagship. I can see after just one shoot that the A1 is not just ‘a bit’ better.
I would expect a m4/3 flagship to cost a lot less than a ff flagship.
@@hughjohns9110 Which reviewers? I have never read that anywhere from anyone I would take seriously. It's also definitely not easy to spot the difference on any photo, as Dennis demonstrates nicely. If you have two well shot photos at low ISOs, you won't be able to spot the difference. That said, I would be able to spot my FF vs M43 in any random set of 100 photos very easily.
Until someone makes a FF camera with 800mm focal range I can carry around all day comfortably, I would not want to miss my OM-1. Best case: have both :)
@@janwedek really, you want me to find them and list them for you?
