In this weekly episode of #Kitabwala, Saurabh Dwivedi has interviewed the celebrated bilingual writer and Premchand’s granddaughter Sara Rai for her book, Raw Umber. This conversation thoroughly touches upon the intimate details of Premchand’s family. How Premchand wrote his acclaimed novel, Godan. How he had great reverence for his wife Shivrani Devi’s writings. And how an enigma of deaths in the month of June shadowed the family of Premchand for quite some time. Raw Umber is an anecdotal account of Sara Rai’s various homes ranging from Allahabad and Varanasi to Australia. Sara closely explains the meaning of the title of her book, Raw Umber, in the course of the conversation. Saurabh also asked Sara Rai about her experience of translating the work of the renowned author Vinod Kumar Shukla.

Greatest story teller and my all time favourite, I cried while reading his stories. Lot of respect to him 🙏 he was Assistant Master at the Normal High School, Gorakhpur and my house is near to that school

A very delightful conversation. I have not read the book but will like to add some antidotes. I had a good fortune to study with Dalip Kumar Srivastava at Sagar University (1963-1966) and we were good friends. Maunshi Prem Chand was his nana .A thin tall person and we had some good time at Rohtak also, ,where he was a Pharmacy teacher. .Book Kamla was dedicated to his mom .They lived just out side of Sagar University campus on left hand side ,coming down from campus. I had few chances to visit his home .Very simple and decent people. i had a chance to live at Allahabad and it is still Allahabad in my jahan.( Any correction to information is welcome )

I am Marathi & fan of Premchand Ji. His stories nurtured my mind in my childhood,youth days. Huge respect & love for him. His stories are translated into Marathi by national book trust. I introduced his stories to my daughters also.

Dhanpat rai is one of my favourite writers that i have read. KAFAN Is my my favourite story that i have read my father's class note and then i read sava ser genhu, GODAN, gaban , namak ka daroga, panch-parmeshawar and many others.

One of the best story writers of his time. Since he wrote in Hindi, although read by many people in comparison to English writers he was not given his due . To me he is the best writer ever , far better than so called "great writers" in English . He was the Gem of India.

Women characters in Munshi Premchand ji's story are very strong. I hv read most of his Novels. I like "Prema", "Karmbhumi" and "Gaban". I always suggest my students if you wanna inculcate reading habit always start with Munshi Premchand.

i m from Gujrat and become united with India by reading shreemaan Premchand, true to earth. Sawai devta. His equivalent in Gujarat is Veer Narmad, suffered life like stalwart, but Gujarati ppl not honouring him like Hon'ble Premchand ji, regards.
