- The Vikings were skilled survivalists and woodsmen. My Viking Age research as a novelist has taught me about primitive fire making and many other bushcraft skills. In this video, I talk about how I dress for Viking Age hiking and what I normally bring with me.

I always wanted to hear a Viking say the words, "viking hiking" - today is a good day!
Indeed tis a good 1!;)
Looks like scammers got a new scam ^
What I couldn't stop thinking during this excellent video is how likely it is that our ancestors had campfires and broke bread in that very spot. What a wonderful history filled place you live Bjørn. I hope to visit soon.
I would love to have your books available in English.
I've signed the petition.
Or learn Norwegian hehe
Or he can read them in English, and sell his own audio book.
@@littlefox8352 I would buy English audiobooks read by Bjorn!
it looks really interesting to me but I dont read any of the languages currently very well, Im working on German so that might be my best option
The amount of work and planning that you’ve put into creating this video is amazing. Thank you, Bjorn, for bringing us to this beautiful part of the world.
I hope your books get turned into movies one day
I hope so too!
Just keep Hollywood away!!!
@Cali Girl Let's hope not.........
Lushon's Slates, Anubis and Evercity. Highly underrated trilogy. We got 3 epic seasons right there!
Sounds lazy... read a book !
Wow the new Skyrim looks really good. (Big fan of this channel)
You had me at the moss covered hillside and beautiful music. I just sank into the most amazing peace. It is so beautiful there. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, your woodlands, and for proof that real men still exist.
I signed your 'book in English' petition and wrote a few words. Including that you also speak English so your books should also be in English print. Still waiting lol.......
I also started reading your blog and look forward to reading more. The best to you and yours.
Thank you, my friend! That was very kind of you!
@@BjornAndreasBull-Hansen It's the truth, my friend! Your videos, your life style bring out the best in me and take me to a place of serene peace. I enjoy everyone of your videos. As long as you teach, I will learn. A refuge from what is happening in my country. To say the least. Please stay safe, you and yours.
@@BjornAndreasBull-Hansen This made me very curious about your books. You carry such a relaxed but still mindful energy around you, it makes me wonder what your mind can come up with. Glad to see that the books are available in my native language (dutch) But is there any specific reason for this selection on languages and for instance, not yet English? I noticed that both German and Dutch share some similarities with Scandinavian languages. So maybe it is to make sure the translation will be as close as possible to the original?
It'd be awesome to spend a day hiking with him.
Five Star Productions lazy huh?
And also in viking gear.
I wish I could go to any of the Scandinavian countries my ancestors came from.
I can go to most of the African and Middle Eastern countries but European countries don’t seem to Like my kind.
Yes it would
In the 1950s, in the Indiana, USA hardwood forest we were taught to use the inner bark of dead trees instead of dry grass. You shred it a bit. Very dry pine needles works too. I am waiting for the books to come out in English.
I love videos of you showing your viking gear gives me ideas for mine. You should do a video showing how to prepare fungus for flint and steel lighting
I was happy to sign the petition to have your book translated into english, I hope your publisher listens and gets it done. Your outfit looks outstanding and your equipment looks awsome. Hope the weather let's up and the day gets sunnier.
The hood you are wearing is called a gugel here in Germany. Pronounced ced just like the search engine, just spelled different. The viking version is pretty easy to make. They are very comfortable and will keep your upper torso, neck and head warm, especially if you line it. I have 2 of them and am going to make more. Thanks for this video. I love wearing my Viking clothes, would do it all the time if I could.
Thank you Bjorn. Don't worry about your English it is very good.
Amazing video as always. Have an awesome weekend, Andreas from Off Grid Sweden 🇸🇪
Very nice kit. Its always nice to see the items in more detail , I love how the leather pouche is made from leather from a church lol how fitting !
Skal\Cheers!
🌲🇳🇴🇨🇦🌲
Looks like something straight out of Skyrim, lol. Very enjoyable!
It's the other way around. Skyrim looks like something straight out of Norway
Excellent video, music & scenery.
Great video. Thanks for sharing it.
I love your videos. They are informative and delightful. Thanks for letting some of us women enjoy them too.
Really love your traditional viking gear, thanks for the explanation, take care, Taro
First time I was back at Færøerne where part of my familly is from (Iceland and Sweden besides that), I was given a hand knitet sweater made from wool from sheeps we helped cut.
Sweaters like they had been made since viking times.
And it was waterproof to a high degree. Perfect in the climate up there, and on viking ships...
Love your gear. Getting set up to get some wool blankets to make a tunic and hooded cowl. Thanks for always inspiring! Keep up keeping history alive- thank you
You are an inspiration to me and I love to see the beautiful Norweigan woods. You are a leader. We need real people to bring us back to bein g REAL HUMAN BEINGS!!!! Connecting with the trees the birds the grass the rocks the other animals. Insects. And you are doing a great job to reawaken us to being HUMAN !!!!
Hello from the United States of America, Cody Wyoming, Yellowstone and Beartooth mountains. I love your videos and hope to read your books soon. Hopefully in English if not then I'm always up for a good challenge. Thank you Bull.
You look badass! Just wear clothes like that all the time!
wondering what happens when regular folks encounter you in these clothes & equipment
@@jdlvtrn1 "woah you look different" But if they're like us, "you look awesome"
I agree, I should! We all should!
@@BjornAndreasBull-Hansen that's awesome!
@@BjornAndreasBull-Hansen agreed my Big Brethren Viking ! This little Viking Brother appreciates all of your videos !
Love your videos! I thank you for this relaxation and lessons in history!
Det er med STOR glede og overraskelse jeg akkurat har oppdaget at forfatteren av den fantastiske roman serien Jomsviking faktisk har en RUclips kanal, det vil få timene til å gå i disse merkelige tider. Fantastisk!!
Great video! I don’t know why we stopped wearing those hoods either. We should bring them back!👍🏻
Mr Ragnar
Go into the city. They’ve evolved into hoodies!
Watch them make a comeback in the 2020's
Greetings from the Ozarks!
The spot your at reminds me of when I was young. My best friend and I camped under a big hangover like that all the time rain or snow.
I like the hood a lot I may have to make one myself. Nice kit and bow, you do fine work!
A tin box and some lumber firewood ... that's way way way better than Hollywood does. Sir, it was a pleasure to watch.
A good video. Takk. _2 C, 2" snow here ( Nord-Britisk Columbia )Jeg bruker senn for baugstreng. Have fun.
I do wonder why it is illegal to bow hunt in Norway, it's not like it would be ineffective or inhumane. It's big here in the U.S. and there are special seasons for it. I plan to make my own bow out of Ash wood from my land. I know you don't hunt but I believe that you should only hunt if you are going to eat the animal and use all of it's components to honor the animal taken, or just go to the store and buy your food.
"Thankyou" Bjorn for your film.
It is good for people to realise the basic essentials in life.
Tools and equipment made by hand brings a closer connection with one's surroundings thus being able to contemplate things with a more clearer intention ! 👍😆
No 'plastic'... is that a subtle hint at the haters? (Thanks, for another great video)
Now that you say it, let's say it was!
Have a nice weekend
Same to you, my friend!
Wow, the similarities @ 2:10 to an Awesome rock out the Loyalsock Valley here in Pa., Are astounding!
No people and no tics .. PERFECT. !! My Morfar would use knitted socks that were rubbed with lanolin . Every time he would use them. He would rinse them in not hot but not cold water, let them dry and then rub lanolin on them and work it into the wool. They were very strong and very water proof. My uncle asked him about them and he said that his Morfar would do the same and taught him and his brothers to do it . He said they had been always doing it from the Viking times. It makes TOTAL sense. I’m sure any type of oil would work. You could probably use reindeer fat or something like that too.
I think I'd better watch some previous videos so I can learn exactly how you started the fire. Recently found out I have a little bit of Finnish in me, so this is so great....wish I could see this land in person.
Yes the Viking Hiking kit!
I went to your petition to sign for you to have opertunity for more sells. I dont read much but thought more sells help you. I do however enjoy you videos here on you tube, mainly because of 2 reasons,1, i traced my family heritage back 500 a.d. to Scotland and of a clan of viking and 2nd, i enjoy learning and practicing primitive skills and living. Regardless, thank you for these videos, your time and efford sharing.
Bjorn! You strike the fire steel in the same manner as I do! Steel on stone, my friends call me crazy. They strike with the stone on the steel downwards. Sincerely, a Dutch Frisian born Mountain Man from the Ozarks. Your kuksa inspired me to carve what we call a "noggin" from a local walnut burl and white oak. It took about 3 days for both using just a chisel, crook knife, and a carving knife. It was a learning experience, to see what people had to do to just have a simple cup. It is so satisfying to drink out of a cup you made yourself.
Bjorn, thanks for sharing this historical perspective, great information. God bless !
Your voice is so therapeutic, the way you deliver information is remarkable.
Amazing content as usual Bjorn! You're always inspiring me to head outdoors more often, as well as you've helped toward rekindling my passion for archery.
Thankyou Bjorn for all you share, best wishes for you & family, super videos.
Hi...I have found you to be a wise man! Your videos are psychological therapy for me. I sit here today, wishing I had found your videos months ago!
Enjoyed the video. I agree about the hoods, they should be worn again. Thanks for taking the time to show us your viking hiking kit!
Great to see you back doing your viking/bush craft skills out in the open again. I love your enthusiasm and eagerness once again. Great video.
Keeping ones feet dry would seem the hardest part. Congratulations on the book tour, may you sell a million copies.
You are set for all that comes your way my friend. Perfect setup. I eagerly await the english version of your book.
Thank you, it was strangely relaxing. This will also help me with my work at university so thank you again.
It would be cool to see a trip with this gear.
Have you thought about a GoFundMe or something like that to get the books published in English?
I WOULD LIKE YR BOOKS IN ENGLISH.
Great video. Glad to see you back in the woods.
FUN video - and the photography of your walk up the hill was wonderful! Thanks!
A nice video showing your kit. I'm completely with you regarding the hood, everyone should own at least one.
All the best
Al
Really enjoyed the video. I really need to experience life like this someday.
I think you should!
Survival Russia has an excellent video on foot wrapping. He is a wealth of information. Good video!!
I have a story to tell you, but I will reserve it for when you sail on your boat again. Maybe you can make a video of you sailing your boat next summer. I will say one little preview of the story. It is about a sailor in the Norwegian navy and their last ship with sails. The story takes place around 1900. The mans grandson told me the story. Enjoyed your show today. I always love your times that you dress up in Viking age clothing. Also I enjoy it when you practice bushcrafting. Take care and be safe. Enjoy your vacation. Vaughn
Great post Bjorn, very enjoyable.
i used to have a Canadian basket pack for canoe camping. I added a padded belt to carry heavier loads more comfortably on long, muddy portages. I have flint and a hand-forged steel striker B/C I used to be an American Revolutionary War re-enactor. I was the regimental drummer and made my own museum-quality rope tensioned drum. But now I'm a very modern, ultralight backpacker.
I love how you try to cover everything you are working with. The most impressive thing I have seen about you so far is you humbleness and politeness!!! It is so refreshing!! I wish you much success with your books!!
A nice explanation of the basics, always good to watch from time to time to keep them in mind, like a reference book.
I’ve watched many of your videos and find you to be a very smart and fascinating man but I didn’t know you took your writing this far! This is amazing to see as a fellow outdoorsman. Thank you for you contributions
Just stumbled upon your channel and since i am always open for historical novels and just love the setting around the viking age i immediately ordered the book. Greetings from Germany!
Love the video Bjørn
Absolutely fascinating, thank you! Subbed!
beautiful landscape. awesome camp spot
I cannot wait to be able to buy your books for the libraries I work for in New Zealand
I've just signed the petition for Jomsviking novels in English, shared the link with family and friends who may be interested too. Great content Bjorn, as always.
Love your stuff and your clothes, especially your hood. Makes you look like a Viking Robin Hood in the beginning 😁. Recently started reading the Dutch version of your first Jomsviking book, which I’m halfway through now and I really enjoy it so far. Best Viking story I read since The Last Kingdom (Not that I read many others XD). You should be very proud of yourself for writing such a masterpiece. I hope the other 2 will be available in Dutch as well. 👍
Caramel Johnson The book is better indeed. It gives more depth to Uhtred’s character.
Love your viking videos!
I just want to say thank you, your videos about the viking way of life have inspired me to aspire to their values and live as they did. This way of life has brought me real happiness and peace, so thank you for changing my life.
You are a kindred spirit, Bjorn.
Love the music and the surroundings.
Very nice video Bjorn. I really liked the water flask. I have not seen one of that design before. have a great week.
Awsome kit and clothes! Good job
Oh my God I’m so excited for this video!
Thank you for sharing!... I wish we had more like you in this world my friend!
Always enjoy your videos, love the Viking Age related content. Very excited to hear your book will be in English soon, I'll buy it as soon as it is!
nice video Bjorn really amazing
Good video thank you for sharing.
Awesome video! I am very impressed by your gear!
Thanks!
Amazing video. 👍🏻🔥🌲 I agree with you on the hoods. A very under rated piece of old world kit.
their downside is a much reduced sense sight and hearing. But the huge reduction of heat loss is valuable
Tusen takk, fantastisk
Awesome. Love everything and it's very interesting.
Awesome. Hello from Texas. LOVE your videos...keep them coming! ❤❤👍👍
Another great video. Powerful landscape. I think you know what I mean.
Awesome sauce I'm excited to start doing stuff like this in period attire looks like a great experience
Skoal bjorn great video looking forward to the next
This is a good look for you!
There is beautiful landscape in Norway at least all the wood hasn't,t been destroyed !
Tack Björn, för dina videos och dina berättelser. Har precis läst ut Jomsviking. Bra story! Jag hoppas att det kommer fler av dina böcker på svenska framöver. Blir lite, bara lite lättare att läsa då 😉
Keep up the good work, och tack!
I would never go in the woods without my tomahawk (no need of big axes in my environment...) and a wool blanket/poncho...
My favourite knife is a small puuko shaped blade...
Concerning my kit is just similar to yours... I use a local type of wool bag for food and small items...
As I am not a re-enactor or historian, I tend to use traditional methods and means and gear, though from different origins... even in jewellery I usually wear a axe "blade" as a pendant, as symbol of strength, masculinity and protection originary from Central Europe, or a Thunderbird (from the traditions of american First Peoples...), sometimes I use a striker (reproduction from a viking one from Gottland...) sometimes my Thor Hammer...
I'll try the horse hair inner sole (I'll have to make them...). As in my environment we don't get very low temperatures, true Bison leather shoes (...and let my feet wet and dry) have not caused me any troubles... In very slippery places (or crossing coastal rocks) I like to wrap my feet in jute bags (like old potato or coffee bags).
Stay well and safe Bjőrn... Skall
PS:...and yes, I hve already signed the petition...!!!
Bautiful, gear, nature, and…… everything, I love your videos, it reminds me, that there is still the people, that apprecieate their heritage and nature. Sorry for my english
Great video! I love seeing how viking equipment would be used. Would you by chance also consider doing a modern hiking kit video as well?
You a true Viking Bjorn Andreas Bull-Hansen Keep it up!
Great video!
Thank you Bjørn Andreas. 👍X 1000.
Thank you mate. It's easy to watch your videos and listen to you talk and realise an hour has gone by. Haha. Safe travels.
