This was a lovely piece of media and I'm very glad to see asexuality represented. However, I urge the people involved in this project to be mindful of aromanticism as well. The comment at 12:37 ("it is a misconception that people on the ace spectrum don't fall in love, because love is an essential part of being a human being") was really out of line for a film setting out to debunk the myth that everyone has the same desires. As an aromantic asexual myself, I can guarantee that not everyone needs or wants romance, either, and we are just as happy and fulfilled as anyone else. Some of us, like myself, find joy in close non-romantic bonds, while others find joy in hobbies, nature, work, and more. There is no one path to happiness, no form of connection to others that is "essential" to humanity.
Us members of the rainbow community have been dehumanised in so many ways; we should know better than to dehumanise each other for not experiencing life how society says we should. I strongly encourage those who created this film to keep this in mind in future projects.
Thank you again for your work.

Filmmaker here! This is an extremely fair comment and was something I was debating during the edit. Rafiqah meant that sentence in the wider sense of 'love' that encompasses familial love, platonic love, other love, and her entire sentence included, "There's so many different love. There is love between a parent, there's love between siblings. There is community love. There is platonic love as a friend. Love doesn't have to be pulled down by the concept of a sex driven romantic love." But just with trying to cut this down in the edit the full meaning was lost and I acknowledge that it can come across as privileging the importance of romantic love and suggesting that is what makes us human. Thank you for pointing this out as a flaw in the documentary.

@@juliezhu6071 Thank you for taking the time to respond, I appreciate it! It’s a shame you had to cut down on the whole quote, as it provides useful context, though I understand it was necessary to edit it for length. I agree that there are many types of love, and that the definition of "love" should be widened beyond the sex-driven romantic type commonly discussed. I am glad to know that this was the original intent behind Rafiqah’s words.
I would still caution against the portrayal of love as "essential", since there are a number of people in the aromantic community (and others, e.g. the autistic community) who feel alienated from the concept of love, for various reasons, and choose to disidentify with it. I am not one of them, so I can’t speak for them, but here is a link discussing it if you’re curious in learning more: raavenb2619.tumblr.com/post/620393788896100352/im-swear-im-not-trying-to-police-anyone-or
Personally, I believe both perspectives are important: recognising that love comes in many forms, including platonic, familial, and romantic but not sexual, while also acknowledging that not everyone identifies with the concept (though this does not mean they are joyless or uncaring).
All that said, thank you again for producing this film, I deeply appreciate the time, effort, and respect you put into it. Asexuality desperately needs more representation and it’s wonderful to see you and the rest of the team do it overall so well.

What's even stranger is that they made they allowed this comment to stay in the film while featuring someone who was aro in the film itself. But she didn't define aromanticism properly, so maybe there was a misunderstanding about aromanticism. It's not well known so you can forgive someone for making a comment like this.

I enjoyed this movie and I thank you for making it, but the line about love being essential felt arophobic (I'm aromantic). Furthermore, some people are loveless aromantics and do not identify with the concept ot love or aplatonic and do not experience platonic attraction (I'm neither of those, so please correct me if I got one of them wrong)..
I read the clarification in the comments and I appreciate it, but it still hurt.
