Hey Dan I've been watching you since mid 80s. When I was a 16 year old geeking over fishing. 85-86 the glory years. Hitting the Albacore runs down in San diego and up in Avila bay. And trying to hit as many half day twilight trips out of Daveys Locker for $18. Wow those were the days! Now that I'm 52 I have the pleasure of taking my 2 sons 20y and 25y out fishing. Planning a nice little half day in April out of Newport landing for sculpin. Any jig recommendations? Thank you for being a Southern California fishing constant. Love your passion for fishing!
You should bring your kids on one of my filming fishing trips or book a private fishing charter with me. Our bucktails work great for rock fish and scuplin fishing.
You got my curiosity on cooking them as far as showing fishing them it's funny as they will take anything I've caught thousands but never kept them we used to catch them as we weren't catching anything else jus to change the mood see the fish are too biting bit lol
I'm sure you don't remember us with as many people as you deal with in a day but our trip with you was unforgettable for us hoping when my hubby retires we can book another trip with you, thanks from Tamme and Randy Snyder
I NEVER KNEW YOU COULD EAT SCULPIN! I FISHED MY WHOLE LIKE, FROM THE 1950,S WITH MY UNCLE A OLD SCHOOL HAND LINE COD FISHERMAN, AND SO MANY DIFFERENT COLORS, USED TO LOVE LOOKING AT THE BRIGHT RED ONES, HAD A BIT OF A YELLOW BELLY, THEY SAY THEY TURN RED FROM BEING IN THE KELP.
Hey Dan, thanks again for the Video. This one really helped us out on our last trip out last weekend. Between my son and I, we caught 40+ Sculpins, more than 1/3 of the boat limits. We were definitely catching more than everyone else. Bucktails with a strip of squid was definitely the ticket. Thanks again for this video, it definitely made our trip!
Within the waters of the North Atlantic, I hauled up a 25lb Sculpin in the Bay. I used a Cod Jigger with a very thick line. I new it wasn't a Cod cus you can feel the fish move with your bare hands. Scariest moment of my life.
Yes I have seen huge sculpins in north atlantic and when checking trawls for cod every hook had a sculpin. We cursed heaps on them. We considered them a nuisance and definitely wouldn't eat them, but places in the world people love them. Guffy is local name here for sculpin.
Catania in La Jolla that sausage stuffed sardine dish sounded really really good especially when you topped it off with a little lemon juice yum the olives and onions yummy that sounded real real tasty made my mouth water I want to jump into a jet and fly to San Diego not the best seafood restaurants here in the panhandle of Texas wonder if anybody makes anything like that down Galveston
Good day Dan! I have question! What type silicone lure do you used for catching scorpion fish? Is it edible silicone with attracting smell? Or it was simple don't edible silicone? You see, I'm seaman and I haven't chance to save edible silicone. I use simple silicone lures. Thank you in advance.
Hey Dan love the videos, keep posting, I have a question. How do you feel about using umbrella Riggs, for rock fish, bass, etc. have you ever used them? If so how did you do?

Sculpin are often caught on the winter cod trips, but I guess you can't keep them, as the mates always throw them back.
if they are over 10 inches they are legal to keep, but check the res in your area, they taste great!

I have caught a lot of sculpin in Alaska. What surprised me the most is how many different species of them that there are.

Caught the tiniest San dab at oceanside. It was like 2 or 3 inches and bit a size 4 hook

Noticed all the tatts on "chef Vince".
Where'd he serve his time?
Vince is obviously a friendly and competent chef. We've all done things we'd like to just move past.
lots of people have tatts these days....
What rod were you using? The one with the cork grips paired up with the international.
+Fernando Juarez that is one of Dan Hernandez rods.
