- Retracing the steps of renowned Auckland photographer, Henry Winkelmann (1860-1931), I retook photos of the same buildings, from the same angle, within their new surroundings.
Original photos are from the Auckland Libraries Heritage Collections 1-W0000

This is so cool, transitions are so clean! I'm surprised it hasn't got more views. Awesome work!
@Na-Kita Fuiono Crichton it's my most-viewed video by far, but thank you!
i cant believe ive walked past some of these building not knowing how old they are
wow, I wish the editor of the video did other cities like Sydney....such a shame the old buildings at the waterfront were destroyed....we take for granted the beautiful intricate facades of old buildings...its a lost art in architecture design today
Thanks and yes, I do commissions :)
Excellent. So much has gone, nice to see what remains.
They busted up some really cool buildings once upon ago.
Fantastic! Please do some more, maybe Newmarket, Mt Eden or out along Tamaki drive?
Well done to you ,very creative
Just came across this. Fantastic video
Wow 👌 👏 😍 👍🏾 🥰 ☺ well done
Very good.
I know most of Auckland going way back to the 1800 even whangarei in Auckland in the 1800 you manly got off the boats on Victoria Street Auckland Central behind the old Auckland central Council building on Aotea square there is a tunnel that goes all the way under Grays Ave all the way to Avondale Military Base witch in the 70s and 80s after the the second World War they turned it into the Auckland Original race course the Auckland city mission was the Auckland central first pub in 1800 my Great Great gran uncle's that Served in France in 1914 During the first world War Sargent Major Louis Nathan and Major General Andrew Murray both use to Drink in this pub plus my Great Great gran pa Thomas emery From Te Kopua Te Awamutu DOB 1888 Died October 1965 when I was 11 years old i always asked my Great Great Aunty if I could look though her old photo album and man some of her photos she showed me went way back to when the Very first Edmunds cook book started I'll never forget it now I'm try to find my cousins from whangarei I've haven't seen since 1989 if there mother or sisters kept some of the old photos album because there is alot of history in it even before the first world War started in 1914 because my Great Great gran Aunt older sister was born in 1910 and my Great Great gran Aunt birth is 1919 and today I'm still talking about it at the Library I've even got News papers cuttings that goes back to 1901 I've got alot of history that the Auckland central Library hasn't had but only on Microfilm on on the Original black & White Original News paper
Nice historical video
Nice work! I found this completely by chance. I know it is not easy to get exact matches like these - well done! Looks like you have worked out exactly the equivalent focal length to Winkelmann's camera. Are you prepared to share?
Thanks, he used a range of lenses including telephoto for shooting across the harbour, but for these closer ones it was around the 12-15mm mark, if I remember correctly.
@@mvpnzl Thanks - yes, I can tell that Winkelmann had at least two lenses. Cheers.
Winkleman is a legend......... Thank god he had the access to plates and shot everything that he did -- as mundane as it probably was at the time its so significant now. His shots from the top of college hill looking back to the city are remarkable as well.
I live off Queen St and watching this was amazing to see the changes! This is awesome!
New Zealand is my favourite county to visit ie Auckland Wellington Christchurch etc in Jesus Christ name Amen 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 by Steve Irungu Jermaine
That was nice. Really well done and really interesting.
Absolutely amazing ! 10 out of 10. I think it is so important for us to respect the history of our Cities and towns . The architecture the architects the photographs and photographers and the stories . Great work !
Watching from Fiji... Aweeesome video. Today's buildings are so ugly compared to the old days.
Wow, some really great memories i do remember. thanks for the video.
How old are you??!!
Born and breed Auckland’s and this is beautiful, good work.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Well done putting this together

Love the video
My best friend, It's always great. We liked and enjoyed to the end. Thanks
Great video matey!
Thanks a lot!
I think I’ll go back and live in the ‘Then’, considering the fairly dystopian and aesthetically ugly Now . . . 🤣
Go for it. I won't follow lmfao
awesome! you should add the former hotel cargen at 8 Eden Crescent! It is a beauty built in the 1880s but has been sitting derelict for a decade now
Thanks @swithheld9905, do you have any old photos of the building? I need the old one before transitioning to the new one.
Are there any construction photos or building plans for these ornate old buildings with huge high ceilings doors and window's? Have never seen any.
I also notice the bottom row of windows are often half underground.
Doesn't suit the BS history we get fed you would think all these big buildings in a new country they would take photos of them being built
This so well summarizes the essential character of Auckland - what was once ornate and beautiful _technically_ remains so owing to the fact that most of it is still there, but it’s dominated by menacing, badly planned and ugly postmodern glass + steel behemoths . . .
and Another thing i show people in Auckland central what it use to look like in 1987 During the Rugby World Cup and allso During the 1990 commonwealth games at (Mount Smart Super top Stadium) AKA Auckland Ericsson Stadium Auckland has gone along way since I was 15 before the 24 of January Opening ceremony of the 1990s comawath games Auckland central still had the water falton down the bottom of Queen Street across the road just before Dick Smith and the Auckland central Post Office everytime I go down there I always set my mind to 1984 During the Los Angeles Olympic games 1987 During the Rugby World Cup and the 1990 commawath games and allso 1985 when David Lounge was the New Zealand prime minister and back then i was 13 years old playing and kicking my feet in the Downtown water fountain across the road from Queen Street while my Great Great gran Aunt was in the post office AKA Britomart Train station if I could turn back time I would to 1987 when Auckland hosted the first 1987 Rugby World Cup at Eden Park 20 of June 1987 my famous uncle from up North KawaKawa my Great Great gran Aunt Te Wiki Tora Edmunds that Brought me up is uncle sid Going Te Wiki Tora Edmunds cousin
I always remember that fountain because people use to tip bottles of dish washing liquid in it and it would completely foam up and bubbles would blow across Queen Street. Hilarious!
@@jeremyt2374 yes they did i just kicked around in it while watering for my Aunty coming out of the post office and sometimes they went into Dick Smith as well I mis those days
1:44 That's kind of sad.
@Mai Vançon there are contractors currently onsite renovating these buildings, which includes the old Food Alley :)
@Mai Vançon UPDATE: The pink Food Alley Building has been demolished. Link House and the Yates Building still standing and appear to be safe: www.imgur.com/a/qdQBWCC.jpg
The White House..? 🙄😅 cool vid btw 👍

From attractive Edwardian city to soul-less eyesore
Sad what our city has become 😢 Head to the 'burbs to reclaim the soul ❤❤❤
@@haleyrichardson8818 But the suburbs are completely devoid of soul themselves.
@@danieleyre8913 One Tree Hill 💗
@@danieleyre8913 Most of the historical buildings have been preserved. The city needed to expand. I imagine you're from a dump like Wellington or Christchurch..
@@luminisant You make me laugh. If Wellington’s a dump then that would make Auckland a sink hole given that despite it’s much smaller size; Wellington is clearly more urbane and cosmopolitan (not that it is very much by world standards). You probably know that deep down and have a chip on your shoulder about it given how you defensively brought Wellington up out of the blue.
Auckland is covered in ugly and depressing either featureless or eyesore buildings from the 70s-90s. Anyone can look at photos of Auckland from the 60s and earlier to see the attractive Edwardian and early 20th century buildings that were lost, and that you are talking from your arsehole with the claim that “most were preserved”. And no actually the central city didn’t expand, not even to Kairangahape road, which is why it kinda sucks.
Make sure ardern doesn't come back
Luxon is Ardern part 2
Omg, looks so much better today.
Don't bring ardern back
