If you’re new to my channel, my name is Alex Hormozi. I’m the founder and managing partner of Acquisition.com. It’s a family office, which is just a formal way of saying we invest our own money into companies. Our 10 portfolio companies bring in over $200,000,000+ per year. Our ownership stake varies between 20% and 100% of them. Given this is a YT channel, and anyone can claim anything, I’ll give you some stuff you can google to verify below.
How I got here…
21: Graduated Vanderbilt in 3 years Magna Cum Laude, and took a fancy consulting job.
23 yrs old: Left my fancy consulting job to start a business (a gym).
24 yrs old: Opened 5 gym locations.
26 yrs old: Closed down 6th gym. Lost everything.
26 yrs old: Got back to launching gyms (launched 33). Then, lost everything for a 2nd time.
26 yrs old: In desperation, started licensing model as a hail mary. It worked.
27 yrs old: "Gym Launch" does $3M profit the next 6 months. Then $17M profit next 12 months.
28 yrs old: Started Prestige Labs. $20M the first year.
29 yrs old: Launched ALAN, a software company for agencies to work leads for customers. Scaled to $1.7mmo within 6 months.
31 yrs old: Sold 75% of UseAlan to a strategic buyer in an all stock deal.
31 yrs old: Sold 66% of Gym Launch & Prestige Labs at $46.2M valuation in all-cash deal to American Pacific Group. (you can google it)
31 yrs old: Started our family office Acquisition.com. We invest and scale companies using the $42M in distributions we had taken + the cash from the $46.2M exit.
32 yrs old: Started making free content showing how we grow companies to make real business education accessible to everyone (and) to attract business owners to invest or scale their businesses.
34 yrs old: I became co-owner of Skool.com to help the many people who want to start a business online do so.
Today: Our portfolio now does $200M/yr between 10 companies. The largest doing $100M/yr the smallest doing $5M per year. Our ownership varies between 20% and 100% ownership of the companies. Many of them we invested in early and helped grow (which is how we make our money - not youtube videos).

I was taking my routine so seriously, and when it wouldn't go as planned I ended up take it out on the girl I was with, and in trying to be the best version of myself, I became the worst
Great self awareness brother.. resonate with this a lot
@@kadrianenyia_ Didn't even realize that I do this as well until someone else said it
Thanks for sharing your pitfall, I'll try to avoid it. Thanks man!
I get what you’re saying brother, but also to Alex’s point in this video, maybe your holding on to an overly critical opinion of yourself and how you were in a stressful situation?
Fuck if I know dude. Duality of life and all of that. Hope you can breathe easy now. Cheers 🍻
There was a vid i watched i believe over a year ago about how 'self improvement' was 'ruining your life' and how we tend to go overboard with "improving thy self" that we improve EVERYTHING about our lives all at once and when something "fails" it feels as though WE'VE failed when really the brain doesnt work like that
I became so strict with my morning routines that I would neglect every other aspect of my life. I wouldn't do anything else throughout my day until I finished the routine. Human beings need variety, so I decided to make my routine way more flexible. I'm a lot happier now 👍
LMAO. I'm the same. I had days I'd finish my "morning routine" by mid-afternoon, because things delayed it. The stuff I actually need is for medical/health reasons, the rest is fucking bullshit. I have all kinds of rituals that will make me go into those cycles that takes a week for me to recover from.
A lot of people needs more structure but when they create one, it’s so rigid that it falls at the first blow of wind. Balance between structure and adaptability.
This is it right here. Balance between structure and adaptability. He also touches on dopamine fluctuations and tolerance build-up

I struggled with this my whole life I'm 30 and have only just discovered how my self deception and defeatist attitude was protecting my egoic needs, since I've started being mindful of my attitude and thoughts that don't serve me not only to I feel happier but so much damn stronger, I will become unstoppable.
I didn’t know what to expect clicking on this video, but I knew it would it provide me value. After watching it, I honestly feel like I just got a straight talk to my soul. Currently going for a walk listening to this video again, analyzing all of the things I tell myself, and diagnosing them as my ‘self-imposed limiting beliefs’ that I will actively begin working out of my mind starting today. Thank you again, Alex!
Wow powerful. Really hit me in the face. Thank you for pointing this out for me Alex.
Dude, this is straight fire. Thank you. I've been trying to build a routine and it's been fucking me up because I have a very variable schedule making it hard to stick to a daily routine. Thank you. This will make a valuable addition to my mindset.
Agree about the "I am" statements. Reminds me of Brene Brown's work on shame and the crippling nature of statements towards the "self". However in regards to routines, I think there are people who have personalities that can just get it done regardless of the environment, but others recognise that they can optimise their efficiency through good habits, making it naturally easier for them to operate in the way that they feel serves them best.
Truth. Bitter and humbling, but absolutely soul-crushingly effective. Thank you. I needed that:)
I understand what you’re saying and you have a valid point, but structure is very important to set the tone. Otherwise, you’ll have a very chaotic life and randomness. There are particular activities or routines that may or may not be a crutch for one, but it’s up to that individual to determine if it is a crutch or a benefit. I think no two activities or routines are alike in terms of wellbeing and benefit. It’s entirely up to one to determine that. I enjoyed this video. Thank you!
Well said.

Excellent points. Thank you for sharing. This is the first video I watched of yours and can’t wait to see the others
I live my day on a schedule now , not a routine. Thanks Alex, you're the man!
Facts. We are not reaction. We are source.🤘🏽🤟🏽
I agree everyone needs a lesson in adapt and overcome thinking while at the same time neuropathways and pathology of behaviors for people are not as easily overcome except by consistent focus. Habits are therefore the pathway to change.
Some people seem to think they need to feel good about everything they have ever done. I think it is in the culture in movies and tv shows that characters are supposed to say "I have no regrets." So people cling to their own weaknesses because they refuse to examine themselves for ways they want to improve.
I remember to get out of my depression i needed to get to know my body better and figure out how best to boost my mood early in the day and have energy. I realized my best mornings were when i got right out of bed, made breakfast, ate, had coffee, took a dump and showered. After that i could take anything the world threw at me and I wouldn't feel tired or starving before lunch as much either.
This is nuts… great points. I gotta watch my language. Wild.
No orange glasses 10,000 years ago. No isolated blue light either.
Overall I agree on your actual point. Not needing a rigid routine to be okay, and being careful on what I say to myself.
I emphasize this to my son on self talk.
this is for neurotypicals lmao i have to take my meds every day because i'm mentally ill. you don't go around telling people with broken legs that their crutches are "just a crutch" lmao but as soon as it's something you can't see it turns into a "you're convincing yourself you're weak" thing when it's really just an "i know i need external help" thing. i absolutely despise daily routines and yet i need them to function well. it doesn't matter what people hundreds of years ago did because our lives are unrecognizable now when compared to theirs.
Balance is better than blind discipline, indeed.
Routines will work differently for people high in conscientiousness vs openness as well

SPEAK LIBERATING BELIEFS ABOUT YOURSELF
CLAIM TRAITS THAT SERVE YOU
BELIEVE SUPERSTITIONS AND CRUTCH THAT MAKE YOU STRONGER
Yeah, in the beginning of my "journey" I heard about the power of routines and created some for myself. It was nice as long as I was living alone in my apartment. Now I am travelling Europe with my girlfriend and her dog for now one year in a camper van. Here routines are nearly impossible. In the beginning I was slightly annoyed that I could not do my routines every morning. But then I told me not be that dependent on them. This helped me a lot. If I can then I do them, if not I am still completely ok. Routines should be a tool that is used when necessary.
So good. Thank you, Alex.
I am someone who needs some structure in my life or else if I become spontaneous and let my curiosity take me off I will do things that are literally non productive and won’t take my further to my conscious goals. He might think of it as a “crutch”, weakness or whatever but what he forgets is humans most of time if not consciously intervened will take actions based of their feelings from the release of hormones. People need structure to start and progress somewhere and to keep that consistency. It is akin to lifting weights and eating the desired amount of calories to eventually reach your body goals. And for that you gotta track it, be consistent and most likely have a routine. Even if you have a bit of flexibility in between.
I do understand his point on complete rigidness though
Here's one thing I believe about myself : I'm Great!
Words are more powerful than we realize! Life and death is in the power of the tongue. Speak life my brothers and sisters!
"orange glasses" lol But actually hundreds of years ago they also weren't subjected to the same kinds of artifical lighting so that one's legit
Most of what he's describing is emotional immaturity or splitting/all or nothing thinking. "it begins as the inability of the infant to combine the fulfilling aspects of the parents (the good object) and their unresponsive aspects (the unsatisfying object) into the same individuals, instead seeing the good and bad as separate. In psychoanalytic theory this functions as a defense mechanism."
In a world of cool parents creating chaos I wouldn't knock people building routines. Especially when people are running around saying they can't adult today. We need that maturity. It's when it turns into those absolutes it's a problem.
Like and subscribed. Powerful video. Powerful. Thank you for taking the time and effort to share this reminder.
daily routines only make you poor and fragile if you have bad daily routines.
You sound like a smart well put together person
100 of years ago, things were entirely different. The rituals we do today are to mesh with the society and civilization we have "evolved" too.
First of all I loved the point about varying the levers we pull to keep things novel; I totally agree. Second, while there is no doubt some truth to the part about over-adherence to routine making people weak, let me play devil's advocate. My degree and career are in something health related, and I work with patients in the clinical setting and clients in the private setting. I mix with lots of people, and have a lot of conversations about what people are up to, how they live their lives. I also read a lot of research. The body and mind have some important overall requirements in terms of what they need to thrive and be well; without a doubt there can be variations/exceptions, and these can be made to both get ahead and toughen someone up. However, a lot of people are at the complete opposite end of that spectrum; and find themselves emotionally bankrupt/detached, volatile/flat/alternating between the 2, cloudy-headed, poor memory, metabolically ill, easily convinced, etc partially because their physiological needs are not being met, or were not met for some time. Shit sleep, poor diet, no sunlight, chronic stress, burning the candle at both ends, sedentarism, neglected relationships, money struggles, etc. I've spent a significant amount of time in college, and over that time have known plenty of students over the years who thought just simply hustling and grinding would get them where they want to be, pushing the envelope, running on Adderall and processed starch and vegetable oil, only to find themselves struggling to perform, and having significant mental and physical health issues. They arrive, but they no longer show up. In term of acute effects, here is an anecdote. I hardly slept the night before the MCAT, because I studied physics up til bedtime like I told myself I wouldn't do. I laid there all night barely drifting to sleep only to find myself working an impossible problem in my head and waking right back up. I showed up to the test, did okay, but my brain felt broken. My guess is I scored a solid 5-8 overall points lower than I would have with even a decent night's sleep, maybe more. There is a balance to it is all I'm saying.
This has been helpful. Thanks
Thank you!

I assume your talking about external stuff like coffee, pills, blunts etc. and thats true. just the internal stuff is just facts, people DO feel less energized when they don t train, or less present when they dont meditate, less happy when they dont spend time with loved ones etc. we should make that distinction. awesome advice though keep it up.

Never depend on anything
Everyone living in a functional democracy is rich, a person with a people with positive intrinsic inner happiness are the happiest based on positive psychology research. At a certain point more money does not equate to greater fulfillment or happiness, sefl actualization however does, which also explains why people in Japan are increasingly living over a 100 in stellar health, they live very minimalistic lifestyles, smaller tidy, lovely homes. People with lots of wealth largely don't live in big mansions, they continue to work and want to blend in with everyone else, and be an active positive participant in a meaningful and positive way in society. It isn't healthy to want to keep making more money it is a form of hoarding, a healthy middle class income is great. Also no need to retire if a person loves their work. Consider what is happening in countries like the Ukraine where people are giving their lives for democracy.....this ever hustling for money is really over the top. I live in Canada where I don't see people as obsessed about money as in the US, an amazing country but just give away access money to worthy charities.
Very good video!!!!
To be fair, humans didn't need orange glasses hundreds of years ago because there was no digital technology

The problem is not routines and habits. The problem is the addictive mentality, and yes, you can be addicted and obsessed with good(healthy) routines as well. To an extent where you stress over missing a workout in the gym or eating candy during your meal.

Precisely.
Having a structure in your daily routine, let alone good habits at all, is far more of an asset than a risk.
True, any level of obsession makes even the 'best' habit a detriment.
But that applies to excess of _anything._

@@LinkEX true, I've avoided schedules all my life, but now I see the benefit of it. Depends. When you implement a good routine, it can force you to do the things you know you have to do like gym, sleeping well, reading. The struggle is to be flexible within your routine because life is unpredictable .
Some help? I love doing my morning routine it makes me really fresh and even more productive. I hate when I miss one. I think that I should get up every day and do my routine after that - no matter if it is productive or not - so I can be better in everything through my the day. Honestly I feel more energetic and productive after my morning routine. Should I stress out if I miss two or three morning routines through the week. I miss them usually because of my girlfriend who wants to me stay up late at night with her. In fact that breaks my other routine which is going to bed at least at 23:00. So I often get angry on my girlfriend because she breaks these two routines that I want to keep up doing. The routines make me feel better though. So I don’t know what should I do. Should I tell her to go to bed with me earlier or I just accept the things and if happens happens and continue doing my day with the thoughts that I can be productive even without my two routines.

Spot on! In my humble opinion - I do think a lot of people need to establish high levels of organization, healthy rituals, and habits ESPECIALLY if they have zero to begin with. After you master that part of you… The next level would be to eliminate your vices, contend with varying conflicts, and being high in adaptability for sure. Finally, making the two dance; structure and challenge.
And fully agree on all the limiting beliefs and “forever” or “that’s just how I am” verbiage people tell themselves. Gross lol
How would you master that part of you? Say I take a walk every morning and without it I feel depressed. I’m not sure what I would do to master that
@@tarabendre1825 You do it one step at a time. If you feel depressed without a walk along a particular route, first you change up the route, then change up and do your walk in the afternoon, then maybe try a bike ride instead, etc. I don't think it's possible to completely eliminate all rituals but it's important to change them up frequently so they don't become completely necessary. Also I think you're demonstrating Alex's "I am" statement by saying you're depressed without taking a walk.
@@Sashinator0 I think also there's brain chemistry that's a certain way in the morning. It affects your mood directly.. You can maybe replace a morning walk with some kind of a meditation, but you can't just will your state into something else or 'train' your brain out of functioning a certain way after sleep and at a specific time of day. Our brain has a natural rythm that shouldn't be messed with, but rather worked with.
My wife sometimes says we HAVE TO go to a certain person's place when we are invited....because we're not doing anything else that evening. I tell her "We don't HAVE TO do anything" - If I don't want to give up my evening of relaxing, just because someone I'm acquainted with invites us over, then why should I? I'm relatively social but it's true that we often state something as a certainty when really it's not...maybe in our own head it is, but after that, no
I completely agree with this. This probably the 1st Time I seen somebody else actually say this but I’ve always said that if I’m invited I don’t have to go. My free time and how I choose to use it is important to me as well.
Anything you can’t say no to makes you it’s slave, if you don’t want to do something WHY should you if it is contrary to what you desire. Blows my
mind
Women are terrible with this type of thing... Their brains are wired differently. Social acceptance is a huge priority for them... Ties in to their survival instincts... This is why men are better at innovating... We aren't constrained by this thinking.
It's true only up to a point. Any fitness routine, any daily stretching or mindfulness routine will on average get you huge results. I agree with not beating yourself up if you break it, I also agree with being prepared to break it and tackle different challenges, but for the most part it helps more than going at it randomly.
I think he means. It is cool to have a routine. But it is in no way necessary to rising to any occasion. But is necessary if say it is. That is a limiting belief that is going to plague your concentration, when you miss a day or routine that “keeps you going.”
Routines are methods, not goals in themselves.
I agree-I totally get what he’s saying but I think the reason we all clicked was because he made it sound like he was going to tear apart the very act of “exercise” but he didn’t even touch on it in the whole video. Obviously using a routine as a crutch is bad
Alex is obviously on testosterone, now the question is it because he is worried about his imagine or cheating from exercise?
I really respect how careful you are when it comes to self talk and the “I am” statements. I’ve noticed I’ve been much more aware of them as well. I think that’s the first step to success is learning how to have that awareness and realize that when you say these things you are creating that reality for yourself whether they are limiting or growth beliefs.

He speaks about negative routines but there are positive routines that do benefit the individual. Not disagreeing with what he said at all. Positive routines can make you more effective in reaching your goals. It's the mentality and structure of the person to decide how those routines impact one's life. Good video . Thank you for sharing your knowledge! Subscribed .
He's also speaking about positive routines too that many people attach overly negative outcomes to if they fail the positive routines. And too much of a positive routine may actually be... too much.
Example: You go to bed regularly at night and get up regularly in the morning, but if you ever miss these times, you've convinced yourself that you get brain fog. The sad thing is you ACTUALLY get brain fog because you've convinced yourself this is what happens. Here the person has become a victim to their own positive routine. Meanwhile normal people who can vary their sleep and wake times by 1-2 hours don't experience any negative effects because they haven't taught themselves these negative effects and artificial limits.
Even though I'm autistic (yes, that identity serves me), I push back against routine because I grew up in such a traumatic environment and routines felt unsafe.
When I finally escaped at 17, having a routine would have decidedly meant capture (and death) because routine = predictability = being found.
15 years later, I'm not trying to outrun the men + my mom who sold me, but I still equate "routine" with complacency and dependence, and I still see those as threats.
But this conversation is very nuanced because sometimes we do need things, and that's ok.
Tell a diabetic that they shouldn't take insulin every day or tell someone who's needs glasses that it's ok to drive without them. It's not going to end well.
And while I'm sure he's not directly saying these things, the coaching industry (in particular the spiritual coaching industry) has a way of taking practical info like this and turning it around on people to blame them (ahem gaslight them) for what they experience.
The danger, I believe, is that we shouldn't do something for its own sake and adhere so strictly to something (usually an impossible standard) to where we lose the purpose of WHY we're doing it --- or lose the ability to be flexible when we don't have those things.
PS The caffeine hits harder when you take a break anyway. 😌

it can good but it can be bad too
habit makes repeating it easier every time but also less conscious every time
This is solved by having an agenda. You don't need a routine to get things done nor does it help you get things done better.
My 8 hour morning routine won’t make me rich?
Nope! must be 12 hours long or else it's pointless.
Yes and you have to wake up at 4AM or else your work doesn’t count
I find that meditation makes me more resilient…do I HAVE to do it everyday? No but I feel more centered and grounded when I do. I usually fully agree with you ❤️🙏
I think his right..you should cycle your routine
The danger with that line of thinking is lets say you found the perfect meditation technique that works very well for you. You don't have to do it every day but by it working perfectly for you so it's something that you do every day, inevitably there will come a time where it's unavailable and you miss a day which will make you more irritable that day than a more flexible routine of intermittent/varried meditation.
@@Sashinator0 The thing with meditating though is eventually that state lasts throughout the day and even in work or annoying external circumstances you can remain present and peaceful and be meditative and so its not something you have to do everyday in the morning, it's always with you , and can be accessed at any time if you're more experienced, its like a match that gets the fire going then you dont need the match anymore.
So it's not a crutch it's your true nature as consciousness or presence is what you realize . That fire was already within you but clouded by constant thoughts. Thoughts come and go but what has always been consistent in your life? Your awareness, even if its sometimes clouded by thoughts and feels like it's in the background it's still there .
@@Sashinator0 "lets say you found the perfect meditation technique that works very well for you" It seems stupid to not do things that work very well for you. Meditation is different to something like drinking coffee. If anything, if you meditate semi-regularly, you're more resilient on the days you don't meditate than if you never meditated at all.
@@OtimObita and what if you meditate and your day still goes bad?
