at 10 for me. my dad had a bad heart and if he had a heart attack and I was the only driver as long as I could reach the pedal and sit on a big phone book I could drive. my first vehicle was a 1970 Chevy pick up and a four-speed stick. the third lesson was backing up a small trailer we had. and you know the shorter the harder. but after 2 hours of what I'm sure were my dads last few hairs I mastered the physics. left is right and right is left. simple.

As a former trucker just put your hand on the bottom of the steering wheel and turn it the way you want the trailer to go and then follow the trailer with little corrections keeping it to your left side using your mirrors only.
    Yes it is that simple!

    • @WickedestVoodoo

As a complete moron who shouldn't be hauling marshmallows in a paper bag, I will absolutely remember this forever. That's how I steer my RC cars when they come at me, the bottom of the wheel becomes the "top" and guides the vehicle. So thanks to you, one day I will have the confidence to get a boat and a trailer and f**k up some other folks' afternoons trying out your method! Lol thanks!

@@keneticchannel definitely need to know how to use them though cause the window isn’t always available. Most people can’t even back into a parking stall properly with their mirrors it’s embarrassing to witness. The worst trailer experience I’ve had was moving a small compressor trailer a few hr drive from our shop to our worksite. Well the pinto latch on the truck was so worn down it wouldn’t latch properly but I didn’t notice till driving down the highway and hit a decent hump in the road and the trailer came loose and was riding on the safety chains. Well after a few of those the chains were ground through. Some rusty haywire we had fixed that and I realized if I floored it before every bump the trailer would be under to much pulling force to be able to pop up so that’s how I drove for two hours. Fucking trailers.

I worked for a County Parks Dept for 15 years. We had a non-gooseneck 28' heavy equipment trailer for hauling the big side deck mowers to the County mechanics for service/repairs. The three vehicles we used for towing were a Ford F-750 Extended Cab with a 10 yard dump box, a crew cab International Workstar 7400, and a crew cab F-350 with a full 8' bed. We had a pretty snug gravel yard with a steep slope so it was always fun watching the new guys try to either get the trailer out or back it back in too fast or using big wheel movements without hitting a fence or another vehicle or piece of equipment, and then see the incredulous looks on their faces when one of us old timers would go slow and steady and pop that trailer into place with two Toro 580s on it like threading a needle. Just gotta take it a little easier and slower and you waste way less time in the long run.

What happens is most people when they back up the boat they turn the steering wheel to much. If it is a bumber hitch it turns very fast, if it is bigger and it is a fifth wheel hitch it is easier to turn not as quick. I have a CDL A used to do OTR when you have to back up for 1/2 mile without going in the ditch that is still skill

@oldscratch3535 yes you are 💯% correct, a small trailer is harder. The tuning happens way faster and sooner. Thus, focus and less is more. The concept never changes, just the perception, what you see. It's never about what you know, but what you can feel and understand. None the less, I 💯% driven in reverse more miles than most going forward. One out on the road can prove, anyone can drive a semi forward, but not anyone can drive it reverse. 1 million miles accident free is a carrier one has well deserved to be able to claim they are a good driver. Just saying brother, we can't come up with excuses for why we claim we can't do better.

I looked like this when I started working in construction as a yard hand, towing compressors and light towers and equipment trailers etc. I was all over the place. Then an operator stopped me, and gave me some of the best advice I’ve ever gotten.
“Take one hand, and put it at the bottom of the steering wheel, and use your side mirrors. Which ever direction you want the trailer to go in, that’s the direction you steer in. If you want the trailer to go left, steer to the left [from the bottom of the steering wheel].”
When I implemented this trick, the change was *IMMEDIATE AND DRASTIC!* I looked like a pro lol. Now I can back up virtually anything.

For anyone who needs it here’s my tip. Get the boat as straight as possible and touch the wheel as little as possible. If it starts to turn then turn into the boat. So if the back end starts to go left you turn left. I’ve only launched a boat 5-10 times but I worked for fedex for years and got good at backing up strings of dollys and baggage carts. Essentially 4 trailers all connected together

This reminds me of a very stubborn friend I had. He "knew" everything and didn't want any help or instruction at all. Well he finally got his inheritance and got a boat and new truck. He invited me for a cruise up the St. John's river. At the ramp he looked like a drunk snake trying to go backwards. After fifteen minutes or so he finally succumbed to the dagger stares of those waiting to launch their boats. We switched seats and allowed me to back down the ramp in one try and launch his boat. I actually got a few claps. He later went to a parking lot and practiced.

Now I kinda sucked at it at first, but the secret is small movements with your wheel and the longer the trailer the EASIER it is. 22 ft boat trailer? No problem. 12 ft project trailer. GFC!

I've been a truck driver for 19 years. In their defense, short trailers are wild. The longer the trailer the easier it is to back up. Backing up a 53 footer looks easier than backing these sbort trailer because it is easier. When the trailer want's to go where it shouldn't, the driver has all the time in the world to make corrections. And if we overcorrect, we have all the time in the world to "un-overcorrect".

While helping my buddy take his boat to the lake for the first time every, the local pro was there in his triple-cab, extended bed, and lifted F-350 and he had a megaphone mounted under his truck. He was parked facing the boat launch and was probably waiting to load his own boat.
As we backed the boat up to launch, the local pro jumped on the megaphone and shouted:
    *“Y’all look like professionals!”*
Now, I don’t think he was being serious, but I am half-decent at backing up a trailer and launching/loading boats. And I don’t even own a boat. 😂
Didn’t jack-knife it and kept the truck in reverse the whole way down to the water too. 👏🏻

As an English guy that went through the hell that is the driving test over there and then moved to the US, this is what I see happening on a daily basis when people do something super simple like trying to parallel park.
I made my kids (here in California) learn to drive a manual transmission. Before I would let them take there test they had to be about to do the things that the UK driving test required. Reverse around a corner, parallel park, emergency stop without stalling or locking up (in a car without ABS) and a hill start without rolling back.
Without exception they all hated me.
Without exception they now love the skills they have.

Reminds of coming off a lake out of Fresno. First, there was a couple in there 70's backing a personal craft on a little trailer with a big cabover camper on their truck down the ramp as I was waiting for my wife to bring our boat trailer. I had to tie our boat to the dock and back their trailer in because they couldn't see it from they're mirrors. Wait, so I went back out into the lake to wait our turn, and someone else else was backing down the ramp and it looked like his foot slipped off the brake and on to the gas pedal and he literally jacked knifed the trailer on the ramp and caused a flat tire. I had to tie off to the dock again and help him get out of the ramp so I could finally get my jeep and trailer and get my boat out of the lake. Then I parked my trailer and hooked up they're trailer and went and pulled they're boat out of the lake. You just can't make this shit up 😂
