There are a few things off top of my head I could think of that might derail things, mostly involving early hacking style missions since LoS tend to be janky on them, especially when trains and train turrets are involved since train roofs can't be broken by frag nades so no easy floor tricks to take advantage of there. Some of the retaliation mission can also have bad civ spawn locations as well. I still believe though! The nature of the snowball means once you get past the first 3 months or so you'll basically be able to run circles around Advent, so it'll be fun to see what you can do playing from such a position of advantage for a change.
After seeing some of your crazier runs, I’m looking forward to this. Based on your success with major restrictions beforehand, this should be a roflstomp. Wishing you luck on flawless missions!❤
The basic runs are sometimes the most fulfilling and since I have literally never done another basic run after the blind playthrough, this was a lot of fun to create.
@@SykenPlays there’s no doubt as to victory, if you can win with 2 soldiers, or 6 but no shots or grenades fired, then regular will be a walk in the park!
I like to feed my reaper with kills on this mission. Take out trooper pack with claymore - 3\8 kills, if sectoid use "Psi-Reanimate" ability and you kill it - that's 5\8, xcom counts every kill as "assist kill" and reaper need 4 assist for real kill, so you only need to get one more kill with vector rifle for corporal rank. Than take reaper on council mission and get as many lost as possible for sergeant rank and presto - you have 5 soldiers on first haven retaliation mission. It's a bit tedious, but rewarding strategy
Good strategy, I want to showcase in this run that this is not necessary to still go ahead and have a successful run. So I will not use any kill grinding or reinforcements etc.
@SykenPlays i did some testing and apparently if sectoid raise psi zombie and you kill sectoid - psi zombie doesn't counts as a real kill, it's only counts as an assist kill... More you know, i guess
Nice and Clean, thanks for the explanations, I still struggle to get a legendary run past mission 10, so hopefully I'll learn some things to push it to at least mission 15 next time.
Oh yeah this will be a master class tutorial on how to play x-com defensively and get past the early game smoothly. As for other run ideas I'd like to see you design a run yourself where the objective is to loose. So hard you're 99.999999% guaranteed to lose. Idea: maybe take a side in the engineers vs scientist war: screw Tygan (no scientists just tygan on his own to keep science super slow we hate scientists) each time one is offered turn it down or kill the scientist vip) pamper the overworked engineers run where no engineers are not allowed to work and each engineer must be saved and extracted on a rescue the VIP mission. You will be roleplaying captain of the luxury cruise ship "Avenger" + some light modding to buff advent cause they don't stand a chance vs you :D. Bonus points if you can prevent the avenger shot down while doing this. RNG Averger shoot downs don't count but chosen shooting the the avenger do count. -20 points out of 100 each time you get shot down by a chosen. +5 points for every cycle you survive. The goal is to gather 100 points or win by story line victory with as many points as you can. -2 points per chosen not killed per cycle. (-6 if they are all active) You are allowed to build ring but the only missions you are allowed to do is the quests that lead to the chosen stronghold (cause chosen interfere with the engineer's happiness - nobody wants to experience turbulence while getting shot down on their luxury ship). only after they are all gone you are allowed mission's to upgrade their stats (except if it requires an engineer slow to go on the mission). The engineer. All weapon upgrades from shen are allowed cause they are instantaneous implying she's not working hard and can thus enjoy her flight as well excavation for crystals is not allowed that would be overworking our pamper good for nothing engineers. You may be allowed to build any building that is required for story progression ie the shadow chamber. and proving grounds for the skulljack. but that's it. Tygan will eventually slave his away to tier three weapons and armor and you would have 4 colonels by the end of it so it might be doable.
That is a handful of an idea, I need to digest it. The research would be very slow, you would have one building slot, since you cannot excavate, that building slot would need to be used for the proving grounds until you can build the shadow chamber. It would be a 4man run, due to no upgrades and with no scientists, it would be difficult to keep up with the research. Not bad at all, will present it to the channel for the next time we have a vote :)
@@SykenPlays sorry I got a bit carried away there. Essentially a no engineer run allowing only buildings critical to campaign advancement and, arbitrarily, the ring so the chosen may die. I will leave the exact specifics up to you. Nothing unwinnable but obviously it should be a challenge for you. Should be a fun idea for a vote if the community on this channel likes it that would be amazing.
I think it's essentially a given the rookies will get promoted on GateCrasher, so I always try to feed as many kills as possible to the Reaper. That way there's a chance you can do mission 2 with remote start (even if it is usually an underground mission).
You keep forgetting about the little + sign next to soldier's rank that indicates a level up. Thankfully all the promotion worthy members missed their shots so the reaper could utilize the xp 😁 He was quite unlucky in this mission, missing a shot and getting revealed twice! Let's hope he gets more lucky in the future
That is indeed what I forgot. But one of the things that I wanted to showcase in this run is that you do not need to squeeze out all of the details in order to make it work. It‘ll be alright eventually :)
I was trying to get those Legacy Weapons you started with and found out about the Tactical Legacy Hub (never clicked it). It mentions all the weapons come with mods like scopes etc already attached? Are these missions fun?
I always see the GTS being built first, am I the only one that thinks the Resistance Ring is the better first choice? You get quicker access to 2 more hero classes which is very very helpful with tiredness and wound rotation. Also you can use the skirmisher hq for quicker base building and templar hq in case you get unlucky. Seems more fail-safe and the squad size +1 is maybe only delayed for a mission or 2.
What you need to appreciate is that you can run 1 covered ops mission even without the RR. If you build one, it only works well, if you also have the engineer to staff there, so that you can get through 2-3 missions per month. That on the other hand reduces your building and excavation speed. Xcom2 has various legit strategies, I am simply showing off one that is less prone to errors than the others.
Great content! I would like to know if you shared your character pool somewhere. It is homemade ? Looks really cool. I'm searching for a good character pool but i can't find any.
I wish the game occasionally gave *wildly* inaccurate information on what the troop strength and composition are expected to be for a mission. During WW2 the brass often had really bad estimates about enemy unit strength, positions, intentions, etc. (even despite all the code breaking), and that made for some very tense moments!
I could have added it, my aim was to mainly showcase a "normal" run. Might even have disabled grim horizon, I left it on, because it is fun and doesn't really change much about the way the game is played on the tactical layer.
I had another question. Why did you choose to start at Reaper HQ? I feel like having a Reaper from the get-go makes the start of the game significantly easier, and all the other choices you made were to make the run as difficult as possible. Am I wrong that it makes things easier? In any event, I start without one, because I want to get through the story with Dragunova and Mox and see where that goes, which means I don't have a Reaper at the start, and I think I have a much better understanding of how to play with one than without, so I was a little disappointed I could not learn about that from these videos. Still, I'm sure I'll be able to learn a lot :)
This run is not a particular challenge run. It is called syken-unleashed. No restrictions, everything goes. The idea was to teach how to cleanly play xcom2 and how to have as many missions flawlessly completed as possible.
@@SykenPlays I see, alright, thank you. Anyway, you probably have other runs where you don't start with a Reaper, right? I could have a look at those for inspiration about the early missions, then.
hi syken! are you using a mod that speeds up the actions? i find i spend a lot of time waiting for things wondering if you use one and recommend it thank you so much
Damn it ... good story, you gotta keep those coming :)

I thought you were planning to do some kind of zero-RNG cheese tactics to guarantee flawless missions every time, or as close to it as possible, basically making sure enemies can never shoot at you (other than ones like Sectoids, Priests, Codexes etc. that always go for non-damaging move first if able). But this looks like just a fairly normal campaign, and you got shot at multiple times. (the best cheesy tactic I can think of for Gatecrasher is to claymore next to a car, to get enough damage to kill Advent commander in one go, at least it works on Commander difficulty)
You can get a 60%ish flawless ratio on gatecrasher with just the normal setup. There is RNG involved, but the odds are actually stacked in your favour and if you are having a proper cover position, it is very unlikely that you are going to get hit.
It‘s a Christmas gift for a special occasion during the season this year. Will think about when the release starts, for now it is the placeholder. Almost done with the production on the collaboration with TapCat. This run will air right afterwards or directly on Christmas :)
I know most of the hit chances of the enemies from the top of my head. Just need to deduct cover and do a bit of math when poison / overwatch is involved and then you can pretty much do it without a mod.
It makes the game longer, since you have a lot more positioning to be done. I would not necessarily say easier in all regards, but when you are playing a control team (such as mind control dominate), it becomes definitely easier, because you have more hit points to work with. The way that I played it (balistic weapons only), it was quite brutal
@@SykenPlays that’s what I was wondering, because if a specter grabs one of your best units, it definitely made the interaction more challenging to navigate. Thanks for the response and clarification. I’m still pretty new, started playing this game in January, and so I’m just now finding all of these different options vs just started settings. So trying to figure out which form I like most.
I am guessing you will be using a lot of smoke grenades? It is hard to get enemy hit chances to 0% without them, and 100% shots take a few months for xcom to achieve consistenty.
Not really, I am approaching the run just like any other run in a sense that I am trying to alpha-strike the enemies and/or bring them into situations where the AI will use non-damaging abilities (like mindspin).
What would you guess your Gatecrasher flawless mission success rate in WOTC might be? I must admit I'm skeptical that anyone can have a greater than 50 percent flawless Gatecrasher success rate in L/I. I feel like 50 percent might be the max. Even using the Reaper or Templar, there simply isn't the possibility to ALWAYS make the enemies be in the disadvantageous positions you hope them to be, forcing you to win two or three 75 percent probability rolls to achieve a flawless mission. For instance, winning just two 75 percent probability rolls gives you a 50 percent chance of success, if I remember my basic statistics math correctly. Here you won one 75 percent roll with the Officer taking a shot into your high cover, but a few other 85 percent or higher things went your way that in the end add up to nearly a 50 percent win rate were your to run all the rolls over and over again, I suspect. And that's in a mission where the Advent Officer's pack was easily targetable with the claymore with no chance of an activated enemy running into your Reaper, and that isn't the case in 100 percent of missions. Same with being able to attack from the roof. Occasionally, it just isn't possible.
I would say around 60% might be possible, the enemies also have miss chances, which is going to influence it as well. The main pack always can be done flawless with the reaper, but the other two packs are creating an element of randomness. It is not that difficult with a reaper.
@@SykenPlays Interesting, I've only ever seen Engineer for that first one after Gatecrasher, and I've played hundreds of runs (because I'm bad and I fail often). Then the one after that gets me a Scientist. Maybe it has to do with one of the DLCs I'm using. Oh, or because I don't think I set integrated content, or something.
@@SykenPlays watched what i could of it. You said 1.0 LWOTC right? Is that because its already ongoing? 1.1 is set to come out in december. Anyways would be amazing if you could cover the mod jam+ classes at some point. Would love you opinion on those
@@JC-oq3ei Might happen in the run afterwards. I wanted to go for a stable release for the run, which is why I did not opt for the Beta 1.1.
I could have a look at those for inspiration about the early missions, then.
uh this is going to be great :D
Glad you already like it :)
hi syken! are you using a mod that speeds up the actions? i find i spend a lot of time waiting for things wondering if you use one and recommend it thank you so much
I did not install any here but in the modded runs I am typically „don’t waste my time“
brilliant. thank you so much syken and happy new year hope the kiddo is doing well! loving this run looking forward to each update@@SykenPlays
18:10 I always get 1-2 soldiers wounded in this mission but I refuse to destroy loot with grenades😅
Yeah, it is easy to get a few wounded soldiers on this mission
Inappropriate Murphy told me his ex-wife got the house and the boat in the divorce. God knows what's happened on that boat!
Damn it ... good story, you gotta keep those coming :)
Is this finally the campaign where you take combat protocol over medical?
LoL, you wish!
Interesting choice for the release date. Why Christmas Eve?
Because it's a gift.
It‘s a Christmas gift for a special occasion during the season this year. Will think about when the release starts, for now it is the placeholder. Almost done with the production on the collaboration with TapCat.
This run will air right afterwards or directly on Christmas :)
@@SykenPlays looking forward to it! Thanks!
How do you know the hit chances that advent has against you? I use a mod, perfect information is its name if I remember correctly.
I know most of the hit chances of the enemies from the top of my head. Just need to deduct cover and do a bit of math when poison / overwatch is involved and then you can pretty much do it without a mod.
Quick question… Beta Strike makes the game EASIER?
Are you playing with Alien Rulers or nah ?
Of course with them, else it would not be fun :)
Now this is epic, just hope the 98% chances land :)
haha, let’s see
Don't you always get an Engineer on the second mission?
Not always, you typically get whatever is missing, which is either a scientist or an engineer
LWOTC mod jam+ ? 🙄🙄
Wait for the channel update today :)
Plus, the last time that I did a beta run, many comments afterwards were targeted around changes that happened after I played it. So it get's confusing unfortunately.
