Being a Chicano was founded on the principles of a Mexican-American born in the US while having parents from Mexico. It also was a struggle being accepted by the Mexican community that came from there and immigrated to the US because they felt that if we had not gone through the rites of passage as they did crossing the border in some way, legally or illegally, we were not "Mexican enough". I'm sure every minority culture in and out of the US experiences the same treatment from their own. I think that it is extremely interesting that this culture was seen in Japan and now in the Philipines. I grew up with a lot of Filipinos in California so I could understand it. It's quite unique to embrace the Chicano culture. Much respect.
Alot of Filipinos in LA and SD were SouthSiders Gangs back in the day too bruh. Everyone just thought they were Mexican too. They were just called Chino. Lol
I can honestly say that the Chicano culture here in the Philippines had been in existence before it blew up in Japan or Asia in general. I am 38 now but ever since the 90s my clothes of choice have always been Chicano/Cholos and so does my friends.
I never knew about the ties we have with the Philippines. I knew the Japanese are really into Chicano/Cholo culture. You learn something new everyday. Thank you for sharing! ❤
An overlooked aspect of Chicano history is that Filipinos in California were always there with Mexicans, we always stood together, especially in the Huelga movement of the 1960s

Back in HS during the 90s there was heavy animosity between the Mexican gangs and Filipino gangs. The filipino gangs were created because they knew about power in numbers to protect themselves from the Mexican gangs. A lot of the Pinoys who arrived from PI that moved to Southern CA, lived in Predominately Mexican neighborhoods. Imagine being Mestizo (mexican/ filipino) in the 90s, homies with all the Mexicans, cause I grew up all the OGs and me being cool with all my Filipino homies who are also OGs. I know the filipino homies who got caught up with the law that were not US citizens, ended up deported back to PI and brought back that Southern Califas Lifestyle back with them. I stayed out of the politics and I’m still respected by everyone. Im from National City & been there since the early 80s. Im also cookie cutter. I still wear dickies, chucks, shave my head and all my tattoos are in Black and Grey. Its my Culture & how I grew up…Nasty City! 😂 I still have solid homies (real x3 OGs) from both Mexican and Filipino gangs. Were all old men and fathers/grandfathers now. You can take the Homie out the hood, but not the hood out the Homeboy!💯 Much Love and Respect from the Left Coast!
i grew up near downtown LA in the late 80s. i dont remember it being strictly mexican gangs vs filipino gangs . the filipino gangs has affiliation with mexican gangs like either ur with 18st/Rockwood st etc then ur against Temple st/echo park/ etc i was filipino it just kicked it with Rockwood st and we didnt get along with some filipino gangs but not all

My wife is Japanese American born and raised in East LA. Japanese Americans have a history being shipped there after the intermment camps. I'm Filipino American born and raised in Southern California. A lot of Filipino gangsters out here dress like cholos in the 90s. That Chicano phenomenon is world wide and has a large influence to other cultures. So props to the Chicanos from the tattoos, attire and culture .Hell I even met an Italian cholo that only speaks Italian at my kids school lol 😂. His kid goes to that school also. I think in general now most Asian Americans and Mexican Americans proved they can assimilate well in each others communities better than most other races.
I'm of Korean ethnic origin. I always tell people who are curious of Asian culture and its people, that we have Hispanics in Asia. We call them Filipinos. LOL
Filipinos are South East Asian. When Spain invaded the Philippines they forced them to take Spanish last names for tax purposes only. After the Spaniards left it was up to them to change to their original last name. Mexican's DNA is a combination of Native American and Iberian from Spain. Less than half a percent of the entire Filipino population has Spanish ancestry. Look up youtube videos of Filipinos DNA test results they do get disappointed when none have Spanish blood.✨
Being a Filipino Homie from a Mexican Varrio, the only reason why the Pinoys got introduced to the Chicano culture is the Filipinos from the U.S. who got deported.

Let me be the first to stay, most Chicanos didnt listen to Hip hop. This is a fallacy. Nothing wrong with that, but most OGs (both Pinoy and Chicano) loved oldies. Our Pinoy brothers took hip pop to a new level, but Chicanos maintained old clasic soul and slow rolls. But have been to the PI many times, the Hip Hop culture is amazing in the Philippines. What is important is our love and respect for each other.

Well researched, impressive scriptwriting and superb cinematography. As a fan of documentaries, sobrang ganda ng pagkaka produce nito. Halong angas while being informative.
Mad props to you, Sir.
Looking forward for more!
Love this! I’m from Chicago and have moved to the Philippines. Nothing like it imo
My Asian Latinos !!!They make it look good and so do the Japanese. Its makes me as a Chicano Proud!
THE MEXICAN AMERICANS SON LA MERA RIATA NO IMPORTA LO QUE DIGAN LOS DEMAS AQUI RIFANDO LOS MEXICAN AMERICANS 🇺🇲💪
I am 38 now but ever since the 90s my clothes of choice have always been Chicano/Cholos and so does my friends.
why not fix up mexico - instead of running away?
@@keyfield8967Was never born there
I never knew about the ties we have with the Philippines.
Exactly bro. Even to this day us Mexicans stand with the Filipino brothers and sisters in the LA area.
That's what I thought. I went to LA thinking it's Hollywood. I'll be darn I went to a subdivision, I thought I was in Tondo, Manila.
True. The galleon trades.
Yes many Filipinos were there alongside Mexican farm workers back in the day, it’s kind of forgotten history 🇲🇽🇵🇭
One thing is forsure Philippins,Colombian, russians are well respected in Mexico and in mexicans in general! We get along so well for some reason:)
What about Bolivians?

Let’s not forget we Pinoy have our own identity. But glad to see Brown and Proud making an appearance in Pnas. Never seen it till RUclips. Most of my prendz were Mexican and even had mexican lady cuz we related in things while in California. Payce out! Much love!
My tito was Chicano, he always dresses like this for me, he was badass, and I started dressing like that too, much love for chicanos❤
Loved this documentary. The production was very well put together. I had to subscribe to this channel. 🔥🔥🔥Bless!
Very well researched. Thank you for recognizing the Aztec, Inca, and Mayan soldiers used by Spain to conquer the islands. I only found out Palengke and Changi where Aztec words, and not Spanish, when i visited Mexico.
It’s a California homie style of the 70-90’s ! Not only Chicano. Check out the crips they black dress same way. If Africa copied the style they’d look like crips and bloods

Glad you enjoyed it!
This is well done . . .love and respect to the chicanos and philipinos....
I'm 1/4 Filipino 3/4 Mexican American my mom was half RIP MaMa❤. I have always been in the Chicano scene since I was a child. Lowriders#1 Oldies/OldSkool Música Mexicana, La Comida Everything! I grew up more on the Mexican/Chicano sides of my Familia. If homies talked down on me when I was growing up for not being full Mexican I would show them where my Cora was at and what I was about. It usually led to chingasos or they would just walk away when I would get violent on their asses. But I would say fuckit and walk Taller and Prouder as a Chicano/Pinoy and Never let that type of prejudice get to me or weaken my mind. I learned to embrace my Filipino❤ and Mexican❤ heritage together I'm Brown N Proud and DGAF what anyone thinks about me. They would also say my Spanish wasn't perfect bcuz I'm part Filipino. Pero la Avenganza es mío in the long run. Haha the Last Laugh is Always Mine. Japan has the same subculture. It's because a lot of Japanese immigrated to LA and lived in boyle heights and East LA.
I'm Mexican, Mexicans and Filipinos are cousins. They be super cool homies like everyone else.
Mexicans and Filipinos... 👍👍👍👍👍
As a pinoy who grew up in LA in the 80s and 90s I too love lowriders but truth be told, 95% of us were “cruisin down the street on my Vtec 🎶 “ 😂

@@user-zv8gd3jl7q ok but I don’t get what you’re trying to say here. What does that have to do with pinoys in the 70s to 90s driving jdm?
i was filipino in a packed car of mexican bangers from Rockwood St crusing down hollywood/sunset blvd sometimes we go to whittier too. good ol days. so much fun and kinda dangerous but we were young lol
I think it's cool that the Philippines, Vietnamese, and Japanese have adopted the Chicano Culture .. the Filipinos are more of a cousin of us chicanos, so it's great to see them spread the chicano culture
I was a member of TBS 13 when I was young.
ONE LOVE!
Solid talaga yung oras na nasayang mo! Hahaha
Oo solid tbs. Solid parang tubol haha. Geng geng pa more
Back in HS during the 90s there was heavy animosity between the Mexican gangs and Filipino gangs.
You can take the Homie out the hood, but not the hood out the Homeboy!💯
Much Love and Respect from the Left Coast!
You need to hit up Pare Young who was deported back PI. He is well respected in CA.
i grew up near downtown LA in the late 80s. i dont remember it being strictly mexican gangs vs filipino gangs . the filipino gangs has affiliation with mexican gangs like either ur with 18st/Rockwood st etc then ur against Temple st/echo park/ etc i was filipino it just kicked it with Rockwood st and we didnt get along with some filipino gangs but not all
maybe it was different in SD?
Sick..been to the Filipinas twice. My lady is pinay. Have only been to areas in Luzon but have seen a few spots with trece hit ups. Got some love out there from a pinoy sportin a Charger jersey and dickies selling Taho. Can’t wait to go back and settle back in with the locals

wow this is just an excellent film. u could be a full time filmmaker. the production and how you connect the subject is seamless
thank you very much appreciate it God bless
I grew up in Santa Maria California, and when chicanos and whites didn't like me for being Mexican it was my Filipino brothers who treated me as a friend ❤❤❤
Much love from the Streets of Pico-Union, Los Angeles 🇺🇸🇲🇽🇵🇭
Brother,yes, three it is ❤❤❤❤
I’m Mexican hasta el pinche tope… and I always felt an instant brotherhood with Filipinos 🇵🇭🤝🏾🇲🇽

I'm of Korean ethnic origin. I always tell people who are curious of Asian culture and its people, that we have Hispanics in Asia. We call them Filipinos. LOL
Not Hispanic at all. Filipinos are closer to SE Asians not Mexicans at all
Your not understanding what the homie is saying, open your eyes vato and pay attention

Proud to be a Pilipino and a Chicano culture
Being a Filipino Homie from a Mexican Varrio, the only reason why the Pinoys got introduced to the Chicano culture is the Filipinos from the U.S. who got deported.
Wish i would have interviewed you guys when i was in Manila. I did a video with the Chicanos in Vietnam it was very interesting how the Chicano culture got over to Asia. In February i plan to see the Chicanos in Malaysia and Thailand

Being from Guatemala myself I'm flattered by this an mayb a trip to philapeens would b cool one day 🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
Let me be the first to stay, most Chicanos didnt listen to Hip hop.
Amazing ❤
Loved you showing Manong Itliong, a true revolutionary for the people. Also that was a nice touch playing Blood in Blood out at the tattoo parlor. 😎

Chicano as per google - a chosen identity of some Mexican Americans in the US so maybe here in PH its more of a fashion statement rather than a culture ?
Chicano means child of native decent more than a chosen identity is who we are. Chicano doesn't mean cholo.
