  • After my surgeries (last one in Feb this year), my physio put me on some roller blades. I tried the roller blades which I really liked, but the feet just move too differently in them compared to ski boots. The whole reason for doing this was part of rehab and getting back into skiing. For me to make turns like this on roller blades I ended up having a very rigid ankle and foot, but when I ski I actually have a very relaxed ankle and foot. So I felt that I was having a disconnect with how I ski. After this, I tried making a set of Harb carvers as they use ski boots, but my personal feeling was that the Harb carvers were too heavy/clunky and also the height and width made it feel like I was tipping over a fat ski, I just didn’t like the feel of them. I actually preferred the roller blades overall, but the aspect I really liked about the Harb carvers was that they used ski boots and I wanted to train how my ankles and feet move with the same parameters I have while skiing. The roller blade boots can have a totally different function with the ankles and feet, and then that changes what happens at the knee and hip. Ski boots gave me a more similar control and feeling to skiing. After having had an operation on both hips this control was very important for rehab (having more similar foot movement). I was recommended to try these “SKIROADS” by someone, so I bought a pair. They kind of slotted into the middle somewhere in between the roller blades and the Harb carvers. These are definitely my favourite out of the three and great for practicing slalom flush type turns (You can make the same turns on all three but I felt like these skiroads were the closest to skiing out of the three). Whatever you use, rollerblades, skiroads or Harb carvers they will never feel exactly like skiing, but they are definitely a great tool for rehab, proprioception and movement training that I feel will definitely translate over into skiing. I have no affiliation with SKIROAD as a company. I bought mine full price. I just wanted to express my preference out of the three I tested. A good thing to practice for extra leg stamina was doing pump turns back up the hill. Definitely a work out. I am very excited to go skiing in October! Also one spot left in our camp for October so don’t miss out and check out projected productions website for details.
    PS I was trying not to touch the poles, just a light little touch or no touch with a pole movement as I had no tip protectors. They ended up touching a few times though.

    Thanks for posting such detail! Very interesting! My experience on Harb Carvers was mixed as well. Liked being in ski boots, didn't like the weight. Also found it almost impossible to balance on the outside skate and actually wore the wheels much faster on the outside edge wheels. Biggest problem I had hitting the snow was the Carvers gave me no sense of edging pressure. Tipping alone didn't cut it on snow. That's why I really like urban style Rollerblades. With a stiff cuff they feel like a ski boot, and they respond very well to edging pressure. Had to modify the cuffs for low tib varum. Also a great tool for fore aft movements, like flush style slalom turns. Good luck with your continued recovery! Keep us posted!

      yes you had a similar experience as me then with the harb carvers. I felt a lot of torque on my ankle too and shin and like you said no edging pressure like you do on the single bladed ones (either roller blades or skiroad). I do like roller blades a lot and could do the same turns as shown in the video on them, but i just feel my feet move differently in the roller blades vs ski boot and my main goal for this is to train for skiing so I chose to use these more often. The other thing I like about using a ski boot with this is the back of the boot. With this SKIROAD I can get a feeling of juicing the tails a little which is fun.

    Ну, Рейли, ты даёшь! А стиль число твой, ведение ровное с узкой постановкой "лыж". Это очень мне симпатично! Удач! Well, Reilly, you're burning! The style is your number, the dribble is even with a narrow setting of the "skis". This is very nice to me! Good luck!

    Hi Reilly. Thanks for the video and comments! I have done ski turns on hard shell inline skates and Harb Carvers since the 90s. You’re right that inline skates never seem to give the real feel of skiing. On skates a person can sit back on the heels too much, and they easily break away with a quick twist. I have always wanted to put a snowblade binding on a skate frame, and it looks like skiroad has done that. Good luck in your recovery. I need the same hip surgery.

      good luck with the surgery. I had both hips done with the FAI surgery now. last one was in Feb this year. Get a good physio for the rehab as it makes a big difference.

    Good to hear you are recovering well Reilly. Iam looking forward to your videos for next season. Keep safe!
    Harb carvers have 2 sets of wheels to make edging movements more of a conscious realistic action, whereas rollerblades tip on edge almost naturally. When turning, can you feel the edging action having an effect. Enjoy your beer! cheers!

    I hope you recovered well. I have owned Harb Carvers for 15 years. I can well understand your comments on user experience. I have seen Stefano Belingheri's videos on projectedproductions. Maybe I can get an opinion from him on the subject? Let's see.

    Even in these flush style roller blade turns, holding counter through the 'edge' change is evident. Heal up quick!

    • @ReillyMcGlashan

      😂6 degree incline is enough and can use pump turns down the hill... the steeper hills are manageable but you just have to make round turns and the pressure build up can skid the wheels.

    I ve found a ski club in Russia that somehow was able to mount the inline skate frame and wheels directly on the skiboots. It is the perfect compromise, unfortunately they removed the tutorial on how to do it

    Reilly, good luck with rehab! The diff between blades and Harbs and skis is the distance from the center of pressure in the foot to the edge. Like the diff between 67mm under foot and 104 underfoot. Any body tried moving a single set of wheels more to the inside to get more of a ski feel?

    • @ReillyMcGlashan
      @ReillyMcGlashan  3 года назад

      not just that its the height off the ground too. this creates a longer lever arm and somehow makes the the tipping feel totally different.
